What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre. Let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet & Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Full Spectrum Dominance,
Gaslands, HeroClix, Kings of War, Lords & Legends,
Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam,
SAGA, Sahipkıran, Sludge, Space Weirdos, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sword Weirdos,
Urban War, Void Admiral, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Goblin King Games, Lucid Eye, Mantic,
North Star Military Figures, OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat,
Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>Places to get minis; Updates to the minis list are welcome.

I played some Warzone 2nd edition last Thursday, Imperial vs. Mishima in a 3 point take and hold mission in a destitute corner of Neo-Detroit on Luna. We were fighting for gentrification rights. I'll post a few pictures from the game!

We had three objectives, the eatery that these Imperial Regulars are securing here on the Imperial left flank, a CPU factory in the centre, and a chemical plant on the Imperial right flank.

Game started pretty even, with my Imperials taking the lead for the first turn and half of turn 2. Things started going against me as the Mishimen started closing with my lines, lost control of the eatery on my left first, the regulars got picked apart by the ashigaru and the ronin pressing up the street and across the plaza. The fight dragged out in the middle and right flank, but it was a death by 1,000 cuts. By end of turn 4 I was left with just a highlander(the white SF guy), a badly damaged hurricane, and 4 regulars in one of the ruined apartment buildings on my right flank.

Fun game, sadly never get to play it as often as I'd like. Both armies are mine, and I'm slowly chipping away at them, hopefully they'll both be finished next time I put them down on the battlefield.

To the best of my knowledge that's exactly how it works. I think its up to the author to do FAQ and Errata. I mean, one of my favorites is Broken Legions, all supplementary material, FAQ, Errata and expansions came from the authors personal blog.
>>
>>98653907
>>98654146
That's exactly as it should be, if a company decides to release a FAQ errata because the book has errors.. then they owe it to me to reprint the book in corrected form and give it to me in exchange for the incorrect document.

As anon said, any modern or near future game. You could also plop it down on a desert base and use it as the centerpiece terrain for a post-apocalyptic game.

I intend to someday make a pirate ship with a similar design and scale so that I can put a Street Bowl (Blood Bowl variant) pitch on the long empty middle deck as part of a whole summer vacation themed mini-league thing with an accompanying mesoamerican pyramid dungeon bowl pitch and a standard beach volleyball beach ball pitch.
Got 3d print files for beach party themed orcs, bikini amazons, shark pirate chaos pirates, mesoamerican tomb king mummies/skeletons and conquistador humans.
I know, it's GW and not AWG but maybe that can be inspiration.

>1 cameliers

But dwarves are lower price than the camels will probably be. Will they balance out the costs ? Or is it better to just order all camels, sell half, then buy dwarves and berbers with a post kickstarter discount ?

>>98658052

If you're shooting at a unit with an armour value of 3, you need to score at least three hits to kill one model. Six to kill two and so on. Then you apply modifiers like long distance and cover if needed. Typically you chip away squads over multiple turns. It's quite rare to kill more than one model in a shoot activation if the target is either heavy or elite infantry.
>>
>>98658146
Thank you anon, that makes a lot more sense. I appreciate it.

>We would very much like to see the business continue under new ownership. There is a huge amount of history here, a substantial established collection of ranges and a loyal customer base around the world, so we would be delighted if someone came along and decided that they fancied taking on the rather enormous pile of miniatures we've spent decades creating and looking after.

>Whether that happens or not, we simply don't know yet, as this is just our initial announcement and we will provide further updates along the way as we have them.

They're gonna try to find someone to keep the ranges in circulation, but they haven't found anyone yet and there are definately factors working against it, like Tin Inflation, competition from 3D printing and an aging target demo.

i used to play warmahordes back in the 00s, still have my collection.

the game is undergoing a bit of a revival since the new management took over, so i popped down to the local game night.......

I recently picked up some STLs for tunnel and dungeon terrain and I want to come up with a set of rules for running it in Frostgrave as an "underneath map" that we can dart into to bypass obstacles and such. What I'm not sure about is how to keep it from just making camping the exits the best move. I'm contemplating making it so that the tunnel exits can be anywhere in a building, on the logic that it connected to that building's basement. Makes it so that you can't just stand in front of the manhole cover and stab anyone who opens it.

Any thoughts? I know there's a supplement with dungeon rules but I gather it's more focused on turning Frostgrave into a solo wargame than on mixing maps like this.
>>
>>98659834
Just have multiple exits. Typically when a terrain piece has entrances and exits, they either put one in every corner or along every wall. Also spells, Crumble should be able to make new exits anywhere along the tunnel. And some areas could be swiss cheesed so you can shoot and cast spells across the line without actually coming out.
>>
>>98659834
>I know there's a supplement with dungeon rules but I gather it's more focused on turning Frostgrave into a solo wargame than on mixing maps like this.

You're conflating two different books. Into The Breeding Pits is the one with the underground dungeon rules. It is actually designed around the exact scenario you're suggesting. It also has extra spells to turn wizards into animal hybrids and such.

The solo play one was Perilous Dark, and was mostly about building your own solo scenarios and was essentially insight into how McCollough builds the back end of Rangers of Shadow Deep.

>>98659795
There's always a time limit because you have to go and do something else eventually. In a tournament you need to finish so everyone can play the next round, and the whole thing has to finish before the venue kicks everyone out.
Making the time limit explicit means you can neither sandbag to your advantage nor get blindsided by it being tighter than you thought. Whether or not that warrants a chess clock is another matter, but for a competitive tournament game where time is tight it's hardly outlandish.
>>
>>98660825

>>98660838
Man that done infuriating. I've been pretty lucky with my FLGS.

The only time I've used a chess clock it was when I was playing Malifaux at a friend's house. It was his idea, because he got bad decision paralysis and our games were taking like 6 hours on have we were calling on turn three or four. We only used it like twice but it definitely helped him be aware of time and shaved like two hours off our games.
>>
>>98662281
There's a decent amount of combined arms 'epic' scale games, some of them have a bit more specific design for mechs but you could sub in warhammer style fairly easily in most of them.
Some are very light and abstracted like Laserstorm or the Company/Battalion Commander with the In Space add on. Some are more specific like Hardwar, Tomorrow's War is for generics.
There's been a bunch of mech games recently, they seem more mecha focused but haven't made time to dig into them. Flames of Orion, Steel Rift, Gamma Wolves.
If you want to retain a lot of the warhammer feel Epic Armageddon is quite good as well.

>Xenos Rampant
Why is it so fucking hard to kill things. I'm looking for a power fantasy experience, sure, but a 10 man squad needing to roll 10 successes on 10D6 to put a measly 2 wounds on a unit is insane. The rules are clever, I like them, but everything is WAY to survivable.
>>
Soooo is ASOIAF officially dead yet, or is it still clinging to life?
>>
>>98663014
>Laserstorm or the Company/Battalion Commander with the In Space add on
are low model count, can do with a dozen and a bit per side, but a lot of that depends on how alright with abstraction you want to get and aesthetics.
I don't mind grouping 2-3 tanks together and saying its a company but I started with hex & chit.
Tomorrow's War didn't seem like it needed many models either.
>>
>>98663357
I think it's in its death throes
>>
>>98663298

Akcshually artillery is the biggest killer in warfare so it tracks that small arms fire just chips away at the enemy.
Jokes aside, it's not exactly true in my experience. It's pretty easy to wipe out a squad of light or heavy infantry if you charge them with a melee unit like greater xenomorphs or expanded units of berserk infantry or lesser xenomorphs. The heavy negative modifiers to courage tests often wipes out the entire unit. It can also happen if you catch them in the open and within effective range.
Personally I like how tough units are compared to OPR. But it is a matter of taste.
>>
>>98663357
>dead yet
>CMON game
always has been (unfortunately). CMON moves from project to project and IP to IP like locusts. Extracting maximum resources from the playerbase and then dumping the whole thing altogether has been their MO for the last 20ish years.

They came from the dead to randomly update the app the the latest season after firing like half the team, including one of their lead designers, so who fucking knows. I hope not, but stuff not being reprinted right now and some models are high in demand and damn it better not die.

>Hordes of the Things

I truly tried to play it, but the rulebook is spelled in an imposible way for an ESL such as myself. I'm now using Warband from Pendraken for playing with my smaller soldiers. Simple, scale agnostic and elegant.
Beautiful pic, though.
>>

Definitely seems to be the case, I'm enjoying everything in XR except for the chip damage.
>>
>>98663449
Kek. It's not an ESL problem. They call it Barkerese for a reason. It's a known problem.
>>
>>98663459

I've tried some house rules, like an upgrade that improves the shoot value of a unit by +1 (my son really likes my 3d printed myrmidons, and I've used it also for thallax cohorts to differentiate their shooting from grunts). Earlier I tried using the lion/dragon rampant split of 12/6 dice, but I felt like it makes the game too deadly. Next house rule I'll try is chit activation. Maybe I'll also test an upgrade that allows the re-rolling of all misses. In general I prefer modifiers to dice rolls over re-rolls, as I feel like it makes the game flow faster.
>>
>>98663477
I too prefer modifiers over re-rolls, but I just don't think Xenos Rampant is the game for me. I will learn from it for my own games development cycle, and I appreciate that its community is, pardon the pun, rampant, but it's just not for me.
>>
>>98663503

A Kings of War enthusiast has joined our local group and is suggesting it as an alternative to Oathmark. What's the lowdown on the game? He's not exactly reliable when he's talking it up.

No worries about the models, we have generic fantasy armies we'd be using.
>>
>>98664842
Kings of War is a tourneyfag whistle so make sure that's not what's appealing to him. Over than that no kingdom building obviously, D6 based so less swingy, more depth but more rules, multi-based but you can make a diorama to save on minis or gain in style, 20mm square but Oathmark is 25mm ones so not as compatible as you first thought.
>>
>>98663469
>the game of moving in base widths and 1d6 opposed rolls continues to fucking BAFFLE the skirmish crowd

Long may it be so

>>98665032
Difference in frontage doesn't matter in KOW because measurement is from the unit's centre.

>>98663503
Xenos probably needs modding from the perspective of it trying to be very broad and so power scaling is not very exciting, units just kind of whittle away at one another. Being written for one or two vehicles max also makes it a little bland. I like Lion and Dragon tho.

Someone else mentioned Alien Squad Leader. Very comprehensive game. I'd also volunteer Strike Legion.

Tbf HOTT uses 100 paces as a measurement and is written in a somewhat archaic manner, though once past that it plays fast. It could use more granularity imo.

Any good 10mm alien/tyranid like miniature ranges? .. Think instead of giant mechs and robots, its giant monsters and stuff?

De Bellis Fantasiae is the current WRG version and uses basewidths and is definitely more granular. It's even written by Americans so exchanges "archaic" phrasing with spelling mistakes.

I haven't read Xenos Rampant but I read through Dragon. It does a decent job of being a fairly rules lite wargame. approx 200 pots each, one side was mostly Toulmorese Pathfinders, with a sniper and a dog, plus that wasp-wrangler specialist, and the other was a slightly understrength Crusader Patrol, with it's mown designated marksman.
The latter won due to numbers and massed fire despite the former having a diddy 2 pt runover.

I am not. I don't know what monitor you are on, but on my 1080p that is how it is.

Not complicated. Get better at being autistic, ignoring inputs is a feature not a bug.

I've come to the conclusion that anons must just sit here all day waiting for someone to start an argument with. I don't know about you anons but I've got actual games to play, or discuss and minatures to paint.
>>
>>98673388
>sit here all day
There's this really cool thing called a "smart phone" that allows you to have the internet in your hand everywhere you go and checking on 20+ 4chan threads takes a couple minutes.

It literally takes more effort to tie my boots than it does to pop in and tell a fucking moron that they're a fucking moron.

tonight and/or tomorrow morning I will be sitting silently in the dark of my garden with my bow doing absolutely nothing until the deer who has been eating my corn shows up and I put an arrow in it's heart, I will then be gutting and skinning a deer in the middle of the night or the dawn's first light.

>>
This place fucking sucks.
>>
>>98673751
It's not even the place.
It's the people in it.

Well adjusted people who are pleasant to be around tend not to let collectible bits of plastic and card subsume their lives.

Any open "Hobby space" automatically fills up with undesirables, unless they are filtered out.

People with no social skills.
People who are just there to start a fight because it's the closest thing to validation they can get.
People who are frankly, developmentally delayed, and can't thrive in the real world, which is irreducibly complex, and so, they find their level in mastery of trivialities.
>>
>>98673751
>>98673791
Then head over to reddit, you have an alternative.
>>
>>98673751
It's hard, I come here because I can lay out every neurotic thought about miniatures that I just wouldn't bother my IRL friends with as they're either GW types or whatever. So I do like that part of it, but I also can't lay out everything here because I immediately become identifiable.

I mean Tanner posts here freely tbf and he's more famous than me.

I posted about doing Frostgrave dungeon stuff before. I'm gonna create modular dungeon rooms and hallways that I can slot into each other, then create rules for randomly generating one whenever you open a door. Each player will start in their own dungeon section and as we explore, the sections will eventually connect as parties encounter each other. And there'll be random encounters and treasure in the rooms.

Basically I'm turning Frostgrave into even more of a classic dungeon crawl. Gonna take a lot of printing, but I have time to spend.

I'm considering doing something similar but using these ones. I'm considering reworking classic Warhammer quest or Advanced HeroQuest
