How come we've had a Monk class for over fifty years but we never have a Samurai class? Are 70s blaxplotion Kung Fu flicks really that generation defining?
>>
Because samurai are lame. Their style of combat was one-trick and worthless outside of Japan. Their appearance was pretty cool but their weapons were over hyped garbage. All it took was a few Koreans with shields to dunk so hard on the samurai they lost half of their island in less than a year. The only reason they weren't conquered and genocide was the Kamikaze storm. Ninjas on the other hand were totally awesome.
>>
>>98652680
We've had multiple Samurai classes over the decades (most of them bad). Most of the time they just overlapped with Fighter.

Also the Monk wasn't based on blaxploitation movies. It was based on a tv series where a white guy stared as an Shaolin Monk.

We've had many samurai classes across multiple editions of D&D.
>>
>>98652773
It was actually based on a book series about a US government spy who knows magic kung fu.

Its been a fighter subclass for years, and actually one of the best ones if you want to specialize in archery. Samurai arent really known for anything not covered by fighter iirc, authough honestly i think monk could be a barbarian subclass if it really wanted to
>>
>>98652680
Samurai was in Oriental Adventures before you were born shitposter kun.
>>
>>98652680
Samurai is barbarian, as explained in the other thread >>98651334
>>
>>98652805
Well combination of the two. Destroyer came out in '71 with Kung Fu in '72.

I used to pick those up at the grocery store. I wonder how badly they've aged.

And Pathfinder! Which is D&D 3.75!

That sword if phallic as hell. Stab a peach with that thing and you'll go to jail for public indecency.

We did have a Samurai class. It was a shitty Paladin rip.

Besides that, there is nothing about the samurai that you couldn't just put on a fighter unless you're trying to come up with some specific class abilities that are better off as feats (at best).

Also, and just as important, they also missed the firearms proficiency.
>>
>>98652680
Your game is so bad you have to wait for a designer's permission to play a particular character concept? Why?

>I wonder how badly they've aged.
There's one about Israel being under threat by a Nazi war criminal. I dunno if he's based on the actual Nazi that went on to work for Israel.
>>
>>98652680
Samurai are just knights but JAPAN.
>>
>>98652680
A samurai is just a Japan-flavored fighter. Not really enough to justify being a whole new class.
Monks at least have the gimmick of moving fast and fighting barehanded.
>>
>>98652680
Because you are just 100% wrong you dumb bitch. Samurai have been in multiple editions as playable classes.
>>
>>98652680
We don't talk about the Samurai class.
>>
>>98654966
No.
It isn't you are as dumb as fucking OP.
>>
>>98652680
You never played Wizardry (1981+), it seems. Bushido was released in 1979-1980, AD&Ds Oriental Adventures in 1985, RuneQuest's Land of Ninja in 1987.

That's 40+ years, good enough for me.
>>
>>98652729
>Their style of combat was one-trick and worthless outside of Japan
>all the basic longsword stances of medieval Europe
Anon... I mean maybe it was useless at that point in history since Europeans were rocking muskets.
>>
>>98652805
I need to look those up. I remember the movie as being pretty bad, but the novel's rogue's gallery sounds like a Kojima fever dream.
>>
Why don't we have a ninja class?
>>
>>98654571
It's an illness common to a certain type of gamer, and one exacerbated by the 'kit' tendency in AD&D, where rather than being satisfied with 'counts as' and "eh, close enough", each minute perceived difference from a stereotyped base class had to be catered to and codified.
>>
>>98654590
They could not have picked a funnier race to portray as a samurai than a fucking dwarf
>>
>>98652829
I loved that book. I built an Iaijutsu Master/Hida Defender combo samurai with an insane Initiative modifier from that. He always struck first from Iai Master feat, and his stacked Dex and Cha modifiers to Initiative meant even if he encountered another Iai master with the same auto first feat, he was more likely than not still faster. Good times.
>>
>>98656911
There's a really funny build that mixed that with master thrower to instantly thow like 20 whatever-you-wants at anything dealing massive damage, as long as someone else was carrying them. Katanas for style.
>>
>>98654590
God, it still genuinely impresses me how fucking bad the 3.5 Samurai class was. It's the second worst one in the game, with only the truenamer being worse. Though at least the gap between first and second worst isn't particularly close.
>>
>>98654571
Because Lord forbid you actually build what you want to play as yourself.
>>
I have nothing to contribute but this song

>>
the 3.0 oriental adventures iaijutsu initiative monster build was fun as hell but in general samurai classes have all been fighter but somehow shittier
>>
>>98652680
There was a Samurai class in TSR's "Oriental Adventures" book. It may be because the book that introduced Samurai to D&D was seen as "Orientalist" and culturally appropriating and that sort of thing isn't going to appeal to tiefling playing discord tranies. Outside of D&D there's Legends of 5 rings which seems to be the go to game for Samurai role playing.
>>98652729
>Their style of combat was one-trick and worthless outside of Japan
Tell that to the Mongol hoards in 1281.
>>98652790
>>98653221
I guess the better way to put it would be why the Samurai aren't as popular as Monks. And the answer to that is probably because monks are more generic than Samurai.
>>98659534
>the 3.0 oriental adventures iaijutsu initiative monster build was fun as hell

Depends on how boring you want your Monks to be
>>
>>98660030
>Tell that to the Mongol hoards in 1281.
Rainouts don't count.
>>
>samurai swear an oath to follow bushido code
>5e paladins are all about swearing oaths
>5e samurais are a fighter sublcass and not an "oath of bushido" paladin sublcass
>nor did they make a unique ronin variant of oathbreaker
>>
>>98660856
Bushido didn't get codified until the 19th century, when samurai were basically welfare ghouls with no wars to fight. That past samurai sometimes acted in accordance with the code is later revisionism to provide examples of proper behavior after the fact. Samurai swore oaths to lords and on occasion gods, not nebulous concepts of protocol.
>>
>>98660856
Because samurai are notoriously duplicitous and evil and those actually following the spirit of bushido are such an exception that it's usually the point of samurai media. They're a lousy paladin analog.
>>
>>98660240
It's D&D so really fucking boring I guess.
>>
>>98660856
Just like knights, people making a career out of being elite soldiers tend to be psychopaths with no morals. What kind of person wants the job of walking hundreds of miles to kill another bloke? A psychopath.
>>
>>98661337
>walking
Samurais and knights traveled and fought on horseback. Which is btw why paladins used to get a free mount.
>>
>>98661414
That's marginally better and only 40% faster than walking since you have to wait for the rest of the army to catch up. Besides riding a horse for more than 20 minutes is very uncomfortable on your thighs, ideally you'd want a carriage with cushions.
>>
>>98661515
Ideally I would like a Giulia Quadrifoglio but somehow that breaks immersion according to my group.
>>
>>98656167
they also lost against cutlasses
>>
>>98654590
Alright OP, you had your chance. Killbots dispatched.
>>
>>98660505
>Rainouts don't count.
The goddess Amaterasu wills it, you gaijin dog.
>>
>>98663767
They're manlets though. They did well when fighting chink manlets in WW2.
>>
>>98660856
Unironically a Warlock fits better by that logic.
Also "bushido code" was a retroactive propaganda piece in much the same way as "knightly chivalry".
>>
>>98660856
> Monk were not a martial melee controller
That was my last nail in the coffin for 4th ed. Think about it:

Stun, trip, disarm, daze, until-end-of-encounter penalty to movement and attacks, grab/grapple and throws.
>>
>>98666427
The 4e Monk is a honorary controller anyway desu.
Tho i do get the disappointment about it not being its focus.
>>
>>98652680
A samurai is just a more autistic knight, its roleplaying flavor you can stretch over any class
>>
>>98666684
Wrong and gay.
>>
>>98652680
>but we never have a Samurai class?
check old Dragon magazine, newbie, iirc in first dozen should be described one
>>
>>98672977
>Dragon #03
>October '76
OP was almost celebrating the class' 50th anniversary with shitposting
>>
>>98661337
>What kind of person wants the job of walking hundreds of miles to kill another bloke?
"You guys are getting PAID?"
>>
>>98675650
You may think that's based, but you're here on 4chan instead of killing Iranians or working as some cartel hitman.
>>
>>98652680
There is a circle of experts that have come a concensus regarding OP being a faggot.
>>
>>98666470
All I saw when someone played was a psionic speedster with bonus attacks on attacks. I saw no more control than I saw on Fighter or Tank.

But I WILL admit I didn't scour the class and trusted the label WoTC had placed themselves.
