I just got the biggest brain ideaInstead of racial bonuses, what if the advantage was baked into rolling for stats? An elf rolls 3d6 down the line but for dex they/them get 4d6 drop the lowestA dwarf gets his 4d6 roll on con, an orc gets charisma to show that they are a proud people who are trying to become better men, a human gets to swap two stats ect.
I don't think it's a bad idea. It bumps the average result from 10/11 to 13. Not exactly the same math, but close enough.
>>98660096Palladium Fantasy did that. But then massively overdid the number of dice.
>>98660096humans should...before rolling their dice, roll a single d6 for each attribute to determine how many dice they will get to roll for that attribute
>>98660111That's how it changes the mean, but how does it change the distribution? That's something I'm curious about.
>>98660096You're gonna end up with a lot of sub 8 Int heroes. Maybe even 3 Int. And wizards so weak that they deal zero damage with their staff.Should probably let class affect the results as well, possibly by letting a player add a D6 to the stats appropriate to the class so an Elf Ranger might roll 5D6 Dex, pick 3 highest.
>>98660111>It bumps the average result from 10/11 to 13Did people ever roll 3D6 for stats? 10/11 is a commoner stat. Though commoners would probably be better represented by 1D6+7.
>>98660096Rolling for stats is only worth doing in shitty low-effort dungeon crawls where you're making statblocks, not characters. Racial stats are also cringe for the same reason. If you want an RPG, you have a default point buy system. If you want a shitty dungeon crawler with disposable characters, you roll for stats.
>>98660326I've used it in some campaigns, but I'm partial to 4d6 drop the lowest.
>>98660512Nah bro, you're just a faggot
>>98660096So in essence this serves the same purpose as racial modifiers, the only difference is the feel. What changes for you emotionally when you replace 3d6-2 with 4d6 keep 3 low?
>>98660200>how many extra dice they will get to roll for that attributeFixed.
I actually thought of doing something like this but rolling for alignments. Like lawful goblins can exist, but only if you roll a 20 on CharGen.
>>98661119sounds odd since it either presumes that 1/20 goblins are lawful or that players characters are specifically exceptions but, woah, not that often and it kinda comes off as waffly
>>98660512Not really. It works decently well when you can assign what rolled number goes to what stat. Also it's fun to buold characters around stats sometimes, rather than the other way around.
>>98661362>buold characters around statsI'll do that if I'm playing a setting that I don't have character ideas for, like, say, Alien. But if we're in a fantasy kitchen sink then I've got plenty of characters I'd rather play.
>>98660512Wrong. With rolling, nobody is equal and having huge inequality in party promotes cooperation.
>>98660986Reddit will never ever roll an 18 Int quirk chungus orc wizard with the former yet if they're lucky they could with the latter
>>98660096But Warhammer and Paladium already did it, no?
>>98661484>having huge inequality in party promotes cooperation.Or ditching dead weight and replacing them with someone else that is more competent.
>>98660096>still rolling for statsOkay grandpa, let's get you to bed. It's already 7:30!
>>98660310>You're gonna end up with a lot of sub 8 Int heroes. Maybe even 3 Int. And wizards so weak that they deal zero damage with their staff. This is already the case with point buy though (unless your point buy system straight up forbids going lower than a certain number), because point buy is economics, and economics is math, and math is immutable. An "optimal" distribution will always emerge, and that distribution will (almost) always result in a character who is so weak he can't lift a baby, so dumb he doesn't understand basic arithmetic, or so uncharismatic he can't order food at a restaurant without spilling his spaghetti.
>>98660096That's a neat idea, but I like my idea of giving each race their own active and passive abilities better.Et cetera is etc.
>>98660096No. If you want to be strong, buy ranks in Might. It doesn't matter why you're strong.
>>98661484It absolutely does not. All it does is encourage the player with the worst rolls to keep killing their PC until they get a new one. Which, y'know, is only conductive to dungeon crawls.>>98660967Nah you're the faggot here. If you actually played roleplaying games instead of wargames pretending to be RPGs (TSR/OSR, anything about dungeon crawling, D&D in general) you'd know this.
>>98661484Wrong.
