>Thread Question
What is the best way to utilize children in a WoD/CofD chronicle?
>>
>>98660496
Wards. Mainline books put great value on raising the next generation, so they can be a great metric stick of both how far your characters have come, and how well (or worse) off the next generation will be.
My first VtM chronicle, the ST allowed me to "rescue" a pair of shovelheads into my care. My favorite session in the entire chronicle was walking them through Vampire 101 of how to hunt, and more importantly, when to not.

Question for more knowedgable folk, would it make sense for a True Brujah to be a high ranking member of Pentax?

>to swear fealty to an elf lord you need to kneel for 15 minutes
>the oath itself is very short
What am I supposed to do for the rest of the time I have to kneel? Suck him off?
>>
>>98660558
As long as he is a evil dipshit and has the power to back it they have a fairly equitable hiring scheme. It's a equal opportunities death cult.
>>
>>98660558
The thing about corruption is that it can technically be in any clan or bloodline.

But at the same time, this is the bloodline described by the Followers of Set as "Our newest friends. We are still, I admit, at a loss for how best to tempt them. They don't seem to WANT anything."

And the infernalist connections they might have through the Tal'Mahe'Ra sound more like they'd be anti-Pentex given the Moloch-Nergal schism.

So if you want to tie one to Pentex you should probably think of a good reason why this one True Brujah in particular is involved. Are they just using them for their own purposes and plan to move on from them eventually? Did they have some experience hundreds of years ago that set them on this path?

Or maybe they don't need to be a True Brujah if what you are interested in is the disciplines, they could always be someone who diablerized a True Brujah.

>>98660566
Maybe listen as other people speak? Maybe you start kneeling from the very beginning but there is a speech from the lord first, or questions on whether someone wishes to state any objections or forever hold their peace, or someone else introduces you and states your credentials while you kneel there... Like how the vows in a marriage ceremony are far shorter than the full ceremony.
>>
>>98660558
Pentex is a death cult for bringing the Apocalypse. The Tal'mahe'ra is a death cult to bring forth Gehenna, but only in their own terms. There is some room for someone playing both sides to accelerate, delay, change or cancel the end of the world there.
>>
Okay so at this point I'm at a loss and I figure somebody will be able to provide an answer
How the fuck are clans/bloodlines determined? Are you not just the same clan as the guy who sired you? Am I missing something?
>>
>>98660558
>>98660614
For example, a Trujah trying to help their Antediluvian win Gehenna despite their current absence from the timeline: either by setting up the dominoes juuuust right so that the world is ready for the true Brujah Antediluvian when their trip forward in time escaping Troile finally ends (and thus the world isn't allowed to end earlier), or by trying to accelerate Gehenna so that all of their Antediluvian's rivals will have killed each other before the end of the trip through time and thus Brujah/Ilyes can win without a single fight in the aftermath.
>>
>>98660652
>Are you not just the same clan as the guy who sired you?
99% of the time yeah, but sometimes weird stuff happens: maybe the blood is a bit weak in you and you end up Caitiff, or you had some fae blood before the Embrace and thus end up Maeghar... The clan is in the blood, but the blood isn't immutable
>>
>>98660652
>clans
For the most part, yes.
>bloodlines
Bloodlines are a more or less a divergence from a clan or a caitiff bloodline that actually stabilized. Gangrel are actually known for having a multitude of bloodlines as their blood was famous for being highly mutable. Volgirre toreador trace their bloodline to philippe volgirre who studied vicissitude and then taught his childer vicissitude until it became a feature in his descendants. Iirc some bloodlines actually originated in the sabbat as vaulderie embraces had a way of mixing the blood.

I kinda like the idea of two vampires from different clans blood bonding to eachother and trying to mix their blood close enough together to create a childer that has traits of both 'parents'.

Innocents is a remarkably solid book, but personally I'm not inclined to play a child as my PC. I did get to upgrade a (teen) innocent NPC into a Hunter over the course of a chronicle.

Generally speaking, kids are best in supporting roles and/or characters to be protected.

Question for the anon who was working on a WoD-CofD mashup: What did you do with the Sabbat and Belial's Brood? Moreover, what did you do with the vampire Sects and Covenants?

>>98660886
Unrelated, but Invader Zim is a perfect example of how regular people in the WoD are supposed to be envisioned as. They’re stupider, more incompetent, shallower, and hopelessly corrupt. It’s why the Camarilla and the Sabbat can have shadow wars. It’s why Pentex has easily infiltrated most of society. It’s why it’s a miracle when someone manages to Awaken. It’s why when you Imbue any of these dopes, they crack more often than not.
>>
>>98660910
I usually imagine they as tired and gray more than stupid. They're worn down by life, trapped in the moment, ignorant and easily distracted. Less Invader Zim humans and more, I don't know, there's got to be a good example of grayed out noire humans somewhere.

>>98660910
I feel like it doesn't have to be that different from real life. Everyone knows that criminals exist, ranging from elite pedophiles to the mob to random crackheads, and yet most people don't lose sleep over it, supernatural criminals are not that different. This is basically the approach CofD uses.
>>
>TQ
Children always add a certain gravitas whether they're the victims, bystanders or perpetrators. They need to be used wisely and sparingly, i.e. preferably not as PCs or Touchstone-like recurring characters.

Why isn't there a sect of vampires who correctly identify that vampires are a blight on the world and dedicate themselves to exterminating all other vampires for the good of humanity? I would have thought that such an objectively moral perspective would be more common in a setting that regularly displays how monstrous, evil and inhuman vampires are.
>>
>>98661436
the children of osiris been that

it's not focused on as much as the whole bardo thing by the community but they been a sect that ritually sterilized members and worked with the osirian league towards the endgoal of killing every single vampire including themselves in the end

however a sect of vampires that despises the behavior of vampires on a moral ground will always lose because they tend to not be willing to do all the evil shit vampires do for the sake of power and control
>>
>>98661436
The Children of Osiris are sort of the like that. But they focus more on the ''do no harm, do not sire and convert vampires into our group'' rather that straight up ''total kindred death'', so they end up more as hippie vegan vamps. They were also retconned out of the meta-plot in Revised, because we aren't allowed good things, everything has to be gritty and edgy in the World of Darkness.

to be fair the Cult of Isis dropped the ball hard. So hard they went from creating the Spell of Life, which is the origin point for so many immortality rotes, to becoming a glorified sorcerous organization. The few that ended up joining the Hermetics as Hosue Shaea are the only ones left that make passable Mages.
>>
It just seems like a blind spot, that one of the most realistic and one of the only sensible reactions to becoming a vampire ("holy shit, we're monsters, the only ethical way to justify continuing to existing is to dedicate myself to total vampire extinction") has basically zero representation in VtM aside from an irrelevant bloodline.

>>98661518
I said this a few threads ago, but Requiem covenants are kinda themed around how people would rationalize being turned into a vampire, Ordo Dracul tries to be scientific about it, Lancea et Sanctum think they have a purpose from God to "test the faithful", etc.
There is a vampire hunter covenant, VII, but they're antagonist only.

what's the difference between weird science and hypertech? and shouldn't that also include alchemy?

why are voudoun and shamanism different practices?

and then there is fucking yoga

what clown wrote this?
>>
>>98661616
So it's a flaw shared by VtR then.
>>
>>98661647
>what's the difference between weird science and hypertech? and shouldn't that also include alchemy?
Hypertech is science that follows current or usually future scientific principles that's a souped up version of sleeper science. Think terminators, cloning, laser guns etc. Basically hard sci-fi. Weird Science is mad science that is either (very) soft sci-fi or science based on esoteric, pseudo-scientific or straight up mystic principles. Basically what Etherites do. Alchemy can be folded into weird science yes, but it can be purely magical.

>why are voudoun and shamanism different practices?
No idea. My guess is shamanism focuses more on the spirit world than voodoo?

>and then there is fucking yoga
In the book it's a catch all term for all magic that uses meditation, body positioning, breathing techniques and other such things.

>what clown wrote this?
Does this require asking? Phil ''Goatboy'' Brucato.
>>
>>98661672
>Hypertech is science that follows current or usually future scientific principles that's a souped up version of sleeper science. Think terminators, cloning, laser guns etc. Basically hard sci-fi. Weird Science is mad science that is either (very) soft sci-fi or science based on esoteric, pseudo-scientific or straight up mystic principles. Basically what Etherites do

there is no difference though none of what you listed nor what the technocracy is doing is hard scifi at all. Cloning whole people with memories and soul. hand held laser guns that are useful in anyway or liquid metal robots are all the softest of soft scifi

>No idea. My guess is shamanism focuses more on the spirit world than voodoo?
voodoo is all about spirits (loa, yours, ancestors) and their practitioners are called shamans in english
>>
>>98661688
Well, that's how the two are differentiated in M20. Hypertech follows scientific principles even if in practice that's not true at all, while Weird Science doesn't even pretend to be inside the consensus.

>voodoo is all about spirits (loa, yours, ancestors) and their practitioners are called shamans in english
I'm not too familiar with either, but yes this one does seem like a very arbitrary culture-based division.
>>
>>98661647
>why are voudoun and shamanism different practices?
because when they first wrote mage they turned ALL european shamanism into one faction dominated by celts and all native americans into animism

they then wrote some smaller factions to cover asian shamans and vodoo

now they want you to ignore that most wod asia every existed because of how racist it would seem by todays standard but don't see how racist it is to put every shaman from eurasia and all shamans from north to south america into one practice and then say that those shamans from africa are the only ones who are different

>and shouldn't that also include alchemy?
suprised that you didn't point out that alchemy should also include medicine-work and yes yes it should especially because alchimists for the most part did not think of themselves as witches but as what we would call scientists today they just had some weird theories about how the world works that did not turn out to be true
>>98661688
> hand held laser guns that are useful in anyway or liquid metal robots are all the softest of soft scifi
yes but the game wants you to pretend otherwise
>>
>>98661647
>what's the difference between weird science and hypertech? and shouldn't that also include alchemy?
The difference is that one can look at a terminator or laser gun or anti-matter reactor and say "Yeah, I can see that in the future of our modern world" and looking at a gun that uses clockwork tech to vibrate atoms apart, bioshock style seaslug superpower serums and flying ships that can travel between the planets
>>
>>98661647
>>98661688
According to how M20 defines these things:
>hypertech
Using established science and tested principles as the foundation for new technology that pushes the envelope and theoretically adheres to common scientific theory.
>weird science
Defying established science in order to create technology that doesn't push boundaries or even pay lip service to conventional society, it just breaks rules in very obvious ways.
>alchemy
Processes that transform one substance into another. Hypertech and weird science can both be used to do this, but it can also be done without either of them.
>Shamanism
Entering and interacting with the spirit world at large and dealing with spirits in general, as M20 defines it. It seems to cover broader animistic religions.
>Vodoun
Invoking specific spirits and asking favours of them, particularly ancestral or communal spirits, without caring about the wider spirit world. Less focus on general animism.
>Yoga
Any sort of physical exercise that could be used to enhance the practitioner's body, mind, heart and/or soul in some shape or form. If a mage thinks yoga is serious business, then it is.
>>
>>98661670
The conflict between realising that you are a monster and not who you used to be, and trying to rationalise and adapt to that in order to continue your parasitic existence is a through-line for both Masquerade and Requiem. I would posit that it's a more personal stance, not something suited to the scale of something like a full Covenant in Requiem.

All of the Covenants could make a case for no more embraces, but the more hands-off design and intent of Requiem means that it wouldn't necessarily be the cornerstone of a covenants structure and belief. The Carthians may well have a project to test the idea of "Hey, we as Vampires are parasites and we destroy everything we touch, whether we mean to or not. What if we cut back a bit?", the Lancea Sanctum could say "God ordained a specific few as Kindred, and this city is overrun with vermin fledgelings polluting the purity of our purpose. We need to clean house". The Ordo Dracul and Circle could make a similar case if you swap God out for some other being or purpose.

But none of those would work as the main tentpole of a Covenant that the PCs are meant to interact with. You have VII for that, and as >>98661616 notes, they are presented as antagonists because that's what they are.

>>98661633

>>
>>98661647
>why are voudoun and shamanism different practices?
white wolf for some reason took the necromancy out of shamanism for the most part but not out of voodun so in mage one is animism and gods and one is ancestor spirits and gods

and yes you are right this is not a very common seperation as most if not all animistic religions consider us to have spirits/souls
>>
People still attack Mage the Ascension over how it handles Shamanism and Vodoun, with claims that it's culturally appropriative and insensitive and exploitative, and the separation of those things was just an attempt to appease those people that failed.

If we ever get M6, any direct mention of any mystical practice that isn't European in origin will be deleted and magic will be made far more general and culturally neutral, to avoid offending anyone.

>back to only hermetics, because nobody cares about pissing off europeans, paradoxically leading to the exact same "european culture dominates all media"

>>
>>98661918
No, there's going to be a group called the Order of Hermes, but they're going to be open to mages in their order doing magic however they want, just with a bonus to Forces magic, because Paradox won't want to culturally center anyone, even if they use generic European terminology for everything.
>>
>>98661953

Something only has power if people believe it has power, by investing belief into symbols and deluding yourself into thinking that something has power and meaning, it gains those things.
>Reality hacking
Everything has a weakness that can be exploited, including the universe, it's just a case of finding out those weaknesses and figuring out to exploit them, whether that's through traditional magic spells, social engineering, or tampering with the source code of the universe using a laptop or a script on your phone.

Think High Ritual, but you're trying to pull a fast one on the celestial order, rather than appealing to it.
>Chaos Magick
"It just werks"™©
As I understand it, it's a loose collection of highly-individual practices that seldom make sense to anyone but the mage himself, even more so than usual.

Compare Chaos with Gutter Magick.
The latter takes liberties with the materials, like substituting a holy cross with two two-by-fours nailed together into a cross. You make do with low-quality materials.
Whereas the former takes liberties with the methods, such as swapping chalk circle around items for tying a red string around them, then tying two ends of it together, resulting in the same effect because it also "encircles" stuff. You make do with conceptually-similar replacements.

Chaos + Gutter Magick are the ultimate grunge mage combo.

>maleficia
"Woe, gay be upon ye!"
It's the art of doing bad shit to someone with magic. Cursing, poisoning, enfeebling, and so forth.
Practice is what you do and, with Maleficia, what you do is harmful and evil shit.

>Because vampires do not exist in a vacuum. You start out weak, and only the most inept sires just let fledglings wander off. Your first year or so of unlife has you under the tutelage (and power) of an older, more powerful vampire.
>Unless you're in the Sabbat, most vampires get slow-rolled into the monstrousness. You don't start with blood orgies. If you're in the Camarilla for example, it's pretty easy to stay at "objectively immoral but not actively malevolent" if you want to. If you are in the Sabbat, you're either a battle-slave shovelhead, or part of a pack, which involves a weak blood bond to the rest of the pack. Meaning you'd need to go full school shooter on the closest things to friends you have.
>Some vampires start off as ghouls, meaning they've got potentially years of brainwashing and idolizing vampirism.
>Even if you have a single individual that decides all vampires must die, how are they expected to find other likeminded vampires? One wrong move and they out themselves too soon, causing them to be blood hunted with extreme prejudice.

Also what >>98662311 says. One of the things I like about Vampire is that it doesn't pussyfoot around being the bad guy, unlike a lot of WoD games. Why would I want to play that when there's already games for being a more conventional (albeit edgy) hero?

Gutter and chaos magic are typically the domain of the Hollow Ones. Provided that he's able to explain his cybernetics with a sort of technobabble, the Etherites might accept him, though they'll turn up their nose when they realise that his methods are more magical than "scientific." The Hermetics would probably shove him in House Ex Misc along with all of their other oddities who don't conform to traditional Hermeticism. Some of the more avant-garde Virtual Adepts might also be cool with him, since they approve of cybernetics and might view the chaos magic as a form of reality hacking.

How powerful is a 7th gen vamp to the average Garou?
>>
>>98662424
7th gen is a celling. the generation alone tells us far too little it doesn't tells us anything about his powers at all

there is also no average garou because of the way auspices and tribes work like we can say the average garou is probably rank 2 or 3, but not what gifts they would have etc
>>
>>98662424
Too many variables. It's entirely dependent on the Disciplines that the vampire has, the Gifts that the werewolf has, and the environment in which they would be fighting.

Probably a Marauder, if the tech grows on or in him like infectious cancer. The aforementioned movie is great inspiration for that, but also Virus, and Star Trek borgs.

>>
>>98662424
to get on what the other said a 7th gen vampire can be a baali who is running a infinite exp feedback loop that allows him to buy disciplines and demonic arcana and investment for himself without any actual demon involved

or a neonate without any combat or mind control powers at all
>>
>>98662464
still nothing m8 there is no average regent

etrius who is in the "too powerful to stat" category is the regent of vienna as could be some 50 year old without any combat powers beside path of blood 5
>>
>>98662464
Since we're talking about generic lupines now, I think that most Tremere powerful enough to become and remain regent of their local chantry would probably be able to subdue a lupine using this or that thaumaturgy.
>>
What would happen if I shot a werewolf point plant with a 14.5mm rifle?
>>
>>98662465
Why are there no Baali who have taken advantage of that in the actual setting and usurped Caine as the most powerful vampire ever? Are they all retarded?
>>
>>98662491
because it's a exploit it's certainly not what white wolf wanted and it only exists because they sucked at writing rules

and just like bugs in video games the writers very rarely consider those canon, but we the players can still choose to use them
>>
>>98662489
They wouldn't just shrug it off, even if it was the base steel-core round. We're talking about a weapon that was effective against all axis tanks at the start of ww2, from fairly long ranges

You would become Inspector Gadget, yes.
>>
>>98662509
But if it's a part of the rules, it's a part of the setting. It's something that the Baali explicitly have access to according to the lore now, so why are they so retarded that they don't take advantage of it?
>>

It would survive and still be combat capable, so it would proceed to mince you.

Werewolves are magical.
This magic allows them to roll their Rage rating against difficulty 8 if damage would ever incapacitate them, and heal an amount of health levels equal to the successes rolled, no matter the type of damage. The downside is that they frenzy and lose self-control in the process.
In other words, you cannot one-tap a werewolf, no matter the weapon. They will regenerate from the damage and they will almost certainly get to retaliate, unless you fabricate a situation where they are completely helpless and unable to retaliate and even this regeneration renders them incapable of fighting back before you blast them again and take them down for good.

>>
>>98662718
Well yeah, he's Goku, he gets to break the rules. But W20's example given for remaining-active regeneration is a Garou getting caught in the blast of an IED packed with silver shrapnel at point blank range. The werewolf proceeds to regenerate half of its health levels and go sicko mode on the hunters who lobbed the grenade at it. Almost anything that you can throw at a werewolf in the World of Darkness won't be able to take it down in one hit.

>>98662824
If it's an ST fiat "rocks fall, you die" thing that isn't based on mechanics, then sure, the Garou dies.
If it's based on mechanics, then anything that reduces the Garou to Incapacitated can trigger a Rage roll for the Garou to heal a bunch of health levels and remain active, no matter what sort of damage it is.
If the ST thinks that a Garou wouldn't be able to survive that sort of damage no matter what, then it's up to the ST to say "we're not rolling for damage, the Garou just dies." So if you're the ST and you want to skip rolling for damage and just have a 500lb bomb automatically kill everything in its blast radius without rolls, that's up to you.

You technically dont even have to do that. The salubri were a bonafide clan that got reduced to a bloodline and you could say the same about the ravnos after the week of nightmares.
>>
Things that can annihilate Garou:
Nuke: at least 10 levels of unsoakable agg damage in the explosion radius
Ratkin Zap: Rage + Gnosis levels of damage (yes a wererat charging themselves from a socket can deal up to 20 dmg)
Antimatter: 3 unsoakable agg in 100 yards per success, but you can make as much successes worth of anti-matter as you want before blowing it up
>>
>>98662772
I never quite figured if they start from 0 or from the -value that the hit took them into. Like, if I did 30000 aggravated damage to a wolf, would it then get to remain active and be left with 1-2 hp, or would it need to first regenerate past the thousands of overkill damage?
>>
>>98662922
There's no boxes after Incapacitated to fill, so once the Incapacitated box is filled, you start from there. Any excess damage that pushes the Garou past Incapacitated is irrelevant, that's my interpretation.
>>
>>98662922
Anything pass the last level rolls over and upgrades the prior levels to more serious damage. If everything is filled with aggravated the extra levels are simply ignored.

Had two hunters brave a haunted mine where a low-tier slasher had made a base.

The hunters were pretty well-armed (pistols and small axes, plus a crowbar or so), and even then, one of them almost got killed by the slasher during a surprise jumpscare attack. The slasher killed all the lights for a second, then struck one of the hunters in the back and almost instantly killed them (dealing iirc seven damage and leaving the hunter with one). Everyone was surprised by how much damage a single pickaxe could do. But they did prevail in the end by shooting the slasher, like, two times.

All in all a succesful hunt?

It's just another case of WoD players completely missing the moral that each game is trying to convey.
Vampire players piss on the struggle to cling to remain at least a little human and immediately rush to circumvent the Humanity system with Paths so that they can focus on treating humans like mana potions and eating increasingly older vampires in the pursuit of evermore power.
Werewolf players piss on the struggle to reform their ways and find a better way of fighting the Wyrm before it's too late and just focus on creating combat monsters so that they compete to see how many nexus crawlers each of them can kill in a single scene without any regard for collateral damage.
Mage players piss on the idea that it might not be wise to cling to rigid beliefs in a world where reality is subjective and proceed to scream at each other for daring to play characters or like factions that deviate from their personal morals because their beliefs are objectively right in the setting where almost nothing is objective.

A vampire trying to remain human and avoid devolving into a callous monster is not miseryporn, it's a core premise of Vampire the Masquerade. There's no need to be reductive.
>>
>>98663227

>Waaaaah, Call of Cthulhu's Sanity system is dumb anyway, roleplaying insanity gets old so quickly!
>Waaaaah, people being prejudiced against my tiefling warlock is dumb anyway, roleplaying fantasy racism gets old so quickly!
Funny how their complaints always amount to "let me ignore the game's setting and/or morality system because I want to powergame and/or get away with my poor choices."
>>
>>98663227
>>98663270
Now who's being reductive? I always had problems with the Humanity system because it was reductive itself, and it gave me a "sheltered California suburbanite" vibe from the way the hierarchy of sins was structured, not to mention it interacted poorly with the system and it had a lot of potential that was squandered in favor of a rigid, one-note kind of rule. You wouldn't be surprised if I told you that most tables either fudged it or forgot it entirely because it just wasn't conductive to fun or good roleplaying.
>>
>>98663270
For me, miseryporn is less about vampires wrestling with their waning humanity and more about the game and/or ST going out of their way to make the players suffer, as is encouraged by V5.
For example:
>One of your contacts is someone who you knew when you were alive, you've always been on good terms with him but you could ensure his cooperation through ghouling him instead of trusting him as a friend, is it worth it?
Not miseryporn.
>You've been seen in a cellphone so you've been banned from Elysium and had your domain stripped from you, which led to rolling a messy critical during a hunt in unfamiliar turf, so now you've got a Second Inquisition capture team hunting you down so that they can pull out your fangs with pliers.

This whole back-and-forth started because actually using the Humanity system and actually acknowledging that being a vampire is a bad thing is considered misery porn by /wodg/.
>>
Alright I've finally thought up a cool idea for the vampire faction in my Hunter game, but I don't know how to go about picking clans and stuff like that. I'll give a description of what he's done and you guys can advise on what would be a good choice for him.
So this guy is a Tequesta Native American from back in the 1600's when the first Spanish missionaries made contact with the Tequesta in southern Florida. As the Spanish pushed his people out, he stayed. As time went on and the area became colonized, then industrialized, he helped grow the area into the bustling area it is today. In modern days, he owns hundreds of high-rise residential buildings through subsidiaries and has a private security firm run by a vampire who serves under him contracted to work in these buildings. His goal is to have control of the land as his people once did, even if they no longer are alive to live on that land. With him here, this land will always belong to the Tequesta.

>>98663964
There's perfectly human criminals that pimp out children and kill without remorse and they don't devolve into drooling feral retards. Does that mean vampires are more moral than humans, or does it mean the Humanity system is retarded and made by sheltered lefties? You be the judge, /tg/.
>>
>>98663974
Perfectly human criminals don't have the original sin born of the first murder looking to dominate them and transform them into murderous monsters at the first sign of moral failure and weakness.

Being a vampire is supposed to be about dealing with the unholy abomination bullshit but most people here are too autistic to realize how the characters can't just buy willpower, virtues and similar traits like they are putting dots on paper.

That's also because if you have a context you have a game and most people here don't care to share their game stories for whatever reason.

On paper you can have a character with anonymity 5, resources 5 and retainers 5 allowing them to exist in a vacuum but what kind of person can play that character on an actual game?
>>
>>98663967
That's a very ventru sounding guy but I'm sure you could flavor him as any other clan like the Gangrel.
>>

>>98663989
How can Tzimisce engage in torture porn and all the other heinous shit they do without going feral until their entire Clan is extinct? How can elders routinely engage in human trafficking and mass murder and all the other shit without going feral either? Face it, the Humanity system kills the entire gameline if you stop to think about it for even five seconds. No, author fiat is not good enough.

...Anon, 2e Vampire had rules for playing 3rd gen modern Antedeluvians. The game absolutely embraced campy vampion games as well as more serious stories in equal measure. "Personal Horror" was the warp vision imposed by the dark triad of brucado, achili, and travis williams. They're the reason "Revised" was started in the middle of 2e(reason it's called revised, it was originally supposed to be 2.5e instead of a separate edition), and forced the time of judgement plot way ahead of the original schedule. The only reason they had the ability to do this was whitewolf firing large chunks of core writers like Reign Hagen when said writers wanted a raise after working as core writers for half a decade.

TL;DR: You're larping on stolen land.

Which is confusing given how busted Bardo is as a discipline. They're basically built to bend setites over backwards, how the Fuck do they keep losing?

There's a trio of tweens running around in the chronical that I play in and, in addition to being fun to interact with from time to time, they're a nice reminder that there are things in the city worth fighting for. One's a lupin werewolf barely out of her first change, one's a wraith, and we're not sure about the other one.

There's also some kids living in an abandoned water park out in the wetlands on the edge of town who SEEM at least to be able to turn into minks. We're not sure what's up with them.

>But why would you try to educate a dirty V5 fag? They're literal LARPers.
Arguing with an idiot isn't for changing the idiot's mind. They're an idiot, they'd never know they lost the argument in the first place. The purpose of arguing with idiots is for the benefit of the audience, showing that the confident answers they believe whole-heartedly are just bullshit from an idiot being confidently incorrect.

Ignoring idiots is how you get your community overrun with them. Idiots are like zombies. If you leave them alone, they'll turn all the newfags into idiots like themselves. Therefore it's the oldfag's job to argue with the idiots so newfags build an immunity to confidently incorrect bullshit instead of believing it and becoming another idiot.

TL;DR: This is how you do proper gatekeeping.
>>
>>98664893

I still think Promethean should be a line in oWoD. It was the most original and thematic of the CoD lines and could have fit right into oWoD with little changes. I wish it had been expanded upon more but we have Paradox to thank for cutting it all short.

If anything good comes from 6th (I know it won't) maybe they could go back and experiment with smaller lines like Promethean.
>>
>>98665167
We just need cofd back honestly. Not this Frankensteined version of WOD that doesn’t get what people liked about either line
>>
>>98665176
Unfortunately that’s not going to happen. Paradox very deliberately killed CofD, they could give Oynx Path the go ahead to start writing any of the many pitches they have made to Paradox on Monday if they wanted to. They want absolute control over the IP even if that means destroying it.

Say what you will about Oynx Path but they had a much better idea of what WoD-CoD could and should be. They had far more of a link to the original writers and vision of WoD. Sometimes I wish Oynx Path would just publish the parts they have left on the Storyteller Vault but I completely understand them not wanting to give 50% of their revenue to the company which has gone out of their way to screw them out of the setting they did the most to make.

Thats's another topic which needs addressing, Paradoxes approach to fan content. Looking at how companies like Chaosium or even Hasbro promote the creation and selling of fan content on platforms like drivthrurpg means that there is a lot of good quality 3rd party stuff produced for them. Much of it of equal quality or better than 1st party content. Compared to very little which come out for WoD. We should see far more than we currently do but again Paradox has no idea how to promote and engage the tabletop fans. CofD could be kept alive by the fans if they had better policies on fan content.

Neither 20th anniversary nor CofD 2e was supposed to happen, but then they did. But since it's not doing great, hopefully they'll either sell or change course. I mean, they've been in the "we're gonna have a huge multimedia franchise soon" phase for 8 years now, at some point they'll have to give up.

I can answer this.

Shamanism is about beckoning and cajoling spirits into doing things for you.

Voudoun is similar HOWEVER it is unique in that a main component of it is a very big focus on spiritual possession, taking the loa (spirits) into you so that they can feel what it is like to have a fleshy body, and in return while you let them "ride" you they may do nice things for you or allow you to be capable of more than you could be without them. Theres a video of a guy sitting in a fire for like 7 minutes straight on youtube as an example of a loa possessed individual.

Those two things ain't incongruous, anon. They're exactly the point, actually.

The "theme" is actually about how absolute power corrupts absolutely and enables the most cartoonish views of reality to become personal dogma. It's just that players forget how that's just half the theme until Paradox kicks their teeth in. The "Find Out" to the "Fuck Around".

Magical how this means the larper only tourists that made v5 must win every time, since their main argument is cwod was always "personal horror" and superheros with fang are the real tourists.

...No that I think about it, carmen was 100% a nephandus. She designed the fucked up qliphoth magic that Ayen was forced to purify, and she doesn't give a shit that here device actively creates monsters by empowering the worst people way more than good people.
On top of that, it's weird how everyone is convinced she's dead when she's clearly still fully alive(even if she's an unfleshed brain and nervous system) in the center of the base Making The Cogito they use for their qliphoth machine.
People dunk on Ayen, but he's a just high-functioninf psychpath trying to be a good person and him fucking it up repeatedly is something that Horrifies Him. Carmen fully understands the harm she's doing, she genuinely doesn't give a shit.
>>
>>98667114
Ayin didn't purify or refine her research, though. He was a collaborator and finished it exactly according to Carmen's designs. Angela's the one that fucked it up.

i think scion 2e overcorrected on the flaws of scion 1e now there are too few stuff that gives you extra dice to roll and i really don't care for the way it handles npcs (not that this problem is unique to it) as the same npc statblock could be in several tiers and i have very little way of known beforehand without asking the st which kinda takes me out of the game
>>
>>98667168
>Ayin didn't purify or refine her research, though
I didn't say he did. The "Completion" is the Purification process. They built a temple to the core functions of evil(the qliphoth), using a chain of human of human sacrifices to power Carmen's magic.
Ayin's whole job and the reason for the loops is to contain the evils and purify them one step at a time until the temple of evil inverts and becomes a temple to perfect good(sephirot).
Weirdly, Carmen can't do this herself despite being fully alive, and fully cognizant, for a procedure that only need a Manager giving Orders. Her lack of flesh body shouldn't matter. It's almost like she's somehow incapable of the good needed to purify the artificial qliphoth...
>>
>>98667268
Carmen was not fully alive. She was functionally dead until the Seed was sprouted. You even see the remains of her corpse repurposed into a tool.

>>
>>98667872
Nta and not a Paradox shill but I think the horror and misery porn elements are just a core part of WoD. Whether they're a background detail contributing to the flavor or the central focus is up to the ST and the players, but with the exception of earlier Mummy there's a fundamental undercurrent of suffering from the loneliness of not quite being human.

It's just that you can kind of ignore it pretty easily because now you have superpowers to abuse normies with. It's probably for the best to not ignore the misery porn, but if you want to keep it more subtle that's reasonable.
>>
>>98667933

No, they're not and if they are, they're better off ignored.

No one has fun playing games like that, retard.
>It's probably for the best to not ignore the misery porn, but if you want to keep it more subtle that's reasonable.
No one wants misery porn in their games, subtle or not. People want to play vampions, go attend some fucking Nordic LARP if you want to pretend to be depressed about being a superhuman demigod.

Same deal as D&D, you have to be retarded in order to have a family that's actually alive or remotely present in your character's story. It's just beginning for your ST to weaponise that shit against you and force you to play along with their misery porn.
>>
>>98668022
>Same deal as D&D, you have to be retarded in order to have a family that's actually alive or remotely present in your character's story
Not the case with D&D
The campaigns I've played where I've had my character have a family or another player has a family has led to really nothing high stakes
Most of the time it's just the parents arguing with the kids or the love interest tells how much they're worried about them adventuring and so on
Typically a DM forgets about about the player's family because they want them to care about their own NPCs
In WOD it similar at times, ST usually forget the player has a family to exploit because their busy trying to get the troupe to care about the newly introduced NPC
The only retarded thing is putting a prophecy in your backstory

>Tell me about the cool shit in promethean anon
How about we start with the core premise? You as a Promethean are an artificial construct built from corpses or inanimate material and given life through a ritual that channels the power of creation itself, the Divine Fire. This can be done by another Promethean, or by a brilliant mortal who discovers the secret of the Divine Fire, but inevitably goes mad because it's too potent a force for the human mind to understand. Sometimes, it just happens. You have no soul, more like a half-formed proto-soul that needs developing. And you develop it by investigating humanity and developing your own.

The entire world rejects you. Animals flee or attack, people start despising you the longer you spend around them to the point they might form deranged lynch mobs to hunt you down, the very land around you starts withering and dying if you stay long enough. All reasons why Prometheans are usually nomadic. It's a miserable life, no doubt, which is why most Prometheans seek to complete the Great Work and become human. It's not easy at all of course, but life as a Promethean sucks that most of them persevere anyway. The ones who give up become Centimani, vicious hateful monsters that make Tzimisce look sane and normal in comparison.

The really fucked up thing? As much as Prometheans seem to be abominations against nature and existence itself, the default assumption is that the Great Work actually works as advertised, and enough Prometheans across the ages have succeeded that their experiences are a presence in the Prometheans' collective memory. Not even the greatest minds in the setting know where souls come from, but Prometheans completing the Great Work is a surefire way to create a new one. It implies that Prometheans are part of a perfectly natural cycle. And that only raises further questions about the setting's cosmology.
>>
>>98668022
>play a game with someone who you don't trust won't turn your family into a misery porn arc and never explicitly telling him you don't want to play out an arc like that
You can communicate with your ST right anon?
>>
>>98668058
I always got the impression that Promethean was meant to be played with a single player honestly. The weighty themes just didn't feel like they'd lend themselves to a group?
>>
>>98668053
It's still not worth the risk.
Giving your vampire any sort of relationship with the living, or any sort of social backgrounds with humans, has the potential to bite you in the ass so fucking hard that it just isn't fucking worth it.
>>
>>98668094
That's kind of the point in making a character with a family, for character advancement from a storytelling perspective
Besides, the same can be done for any friendly NPC the characters interact with
>>
Shark here. This week’s session was canceled because something happened to ST’s brother.

On the bright side I didn’t make Shark’s wraith character sheet. I was too lost trying to figure out what to do.
>>
>>98668104
It's a retarded point that just bogs down the fun shit with misery porn drama.
>>
>>98668116
But that retarded point is what WOD is about though
>>
>>98668135
No, the point of WoD is the power fantasy, of being a badass vampire or werewolf or mage and using system mastery and intelligent gameplay to outsmart objectively stronger foes.
>>
>>98668058
>all promethean party
>created by an archmage on his horizon realm
>performed some sort of research on souls and divine nature of man
>he dissapeared
>everyone in this world is an artificial being of some sort
>try to enter his tower and go through thousands of challenges while fighting these that lost themselves to despair to hopefully obtain a real soul
Does this sound like a fun premise ?

>Prometheans' collective memory. Not even the greatest minds in the setting know where souls come from, but Prometheans completing the Great Work is a surefire way to create a new one. It implies that Prometheans are part of a perfectly natural cycle.
God is just a good guy like that. Ask and you shall receive.
>>
>>98668149
No it's not
The ST system is not made for combat or the power fantasy
It's made for the political intrigue and social interactions
Going in running full force at some strong monster with no plan is the quickest way to get your character killed
>>
>>98668171
>It's made for the political intrigue and social interactions
Outwitting and outmaneuvering your enemies in social and political situations is a power fantasy thing though.
>>
>>98668178
And that requires roleplaying which varies on the player
Having you win the argument with a dice roll is not what this game was made for
>>
>>98668179
It kinda is.
>>
>>98668083
You just need a more mature group like you do with wraith and personally I think Promethean lends itself to shorter campaigns than most other Wod/ CofD lines. It gives you games that you can talk a lot about. But it does lean harder into the misery and horror side of the setting that apparently some of the anons here hate.

It deserves a second chance, I hope we see it revived in the future.
>>
>>98668179
Yes, it is. Go to a Nordic LARP if you don't want to roll dice.
>>
>>98668189
It's not
That's not how this system was supposed to be played
Having the player fumble their words in an argument against someone and then succeed because they got 10s on their roll is bullshit and should not be rewarded
>>
>>98668197
You roll dice when you need to, not for everything when you could act out the scene and interact with the ST's game
>>
>>98668152

I doubt that you'll have a better argument when you wake up but alright, goodnight
>>
>>98668225
Nice strawman. No one says that they "ungua bunga" anything. The point is to plan and play intelligently and build characters in such a way that the dice are most likely to give you the outcomes that you want.
>>
>>98668236
>The point is to plan and play intelligently and build characters in such a way that the dice are most likely to give you the outcomes that you want.
That's what I've been saying
You've been the one implying that dice rolls are all that matter in the game
>>
>>98668215
Just say that you dont like the premise. Jesus its just a random idea for a campaign I thought could be fun.
>>
>>98667415
>Humanity is shit
If you found it non-shit, it's because you never had to play under it being faithfully adapted.
"Planned violation" is level 3. It includes defending yourself from harm, setting up traps for those that plan you harm, and generally participating in any kind of realistic scuffle against criminals and vampires. Heck, self-defense is level 4.
So the only way to realistically play anywhere but solo in bumfuck suburbia is to pull your punches and either maim or torpor (level 8: Injury to another). You can attempt that, but you'd need to be at a level of power that can afford to pull punches (and not trigger level 4), which in turn requires you to have obtained that level of power peacefully, somehow.

It's unengaging for anyone that has a whit of how the real world works, immersion-shattering for anyone that has a whit of how WoD works, and doubly so for someone that plans on ever engaging the combat system (which is the majority).
Humanity as it is makes sense for Children Of Osiris, hippies that they are. Any other genus, especially one that doesn't have bullshit "pls no fight" powers, is either gonna very quickly get hardlocked into 2 dots of humanity.
The Paths and Roads however are a decent alternative. You do need some kind of autism to ground yourself from giving in to the Beast, but it needn't be performative hippie pacifism that was laughable when it was thought out.
>>
>>98668244
No, you're the retard insisting that you can't play Vampire without being a theater kid. Dice rolls are the primary method of conflict resolution. Anyone who resolves a scene through improv and improv alone is effectively cheating at the game and circumventing the rules.
>>
>>98668266
It's not being a theater kid, it's actually putting thought into how your character interacts with the world instead of just having the dice decide everything
You use them in combat, you use them for searching, you use them for hiding, and you use them for researching
But they should be used the least when having social interactions with another character or npcs
>>
>>98668279
Retard, you decide how your character interacts with the world, then the dice determines the outcome of your actions.
But I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I need to explain the basics of how you play a TTRPG to a LARPer.
>>
>>98668215
Mindbroken by MageGods
>>
>>98668291
The dice determining the outcome when you botch the interaction is not how it goes
It just lets the players be lazy about how they interact with the world
It's not larping, it's basic roleplaying
>>

>>
>>98668336
But anon, if people can't wank off Mage or argue about big-picture WoD story elements that will never impact the games that nobody is playing, how will the thread survive?

>>
>>98668354
I'm not guilt tripping anyone, I'm stating actual facts about the game
Roleplaying is not the same as larping and clearly you don't understand that and want everything to be determined by what the dice say as opposed to what your character says
Dice rolls don't determine everything and good roleplaying should be rewarded
>>
>>98668369
Your opinions are not facts. This is a game. Games have rules. Expecting to be rewarded for play-acting instead of playing the game is retarded. If you want to be rewarded in the game, play the game, which involves rolling dice. These are the facts.
>>
>>98668193

>>
>>98668374

Dice rolls don't determine everything and good roleplaying should be rewarded
>>
>>98668383
It is a roleplaying GAME. The roleplaying provides the flavour, but the GAME has rules that you must abide by in order to play the GAME. Stop trying to enforce your LARPer opinions as facts.
>>
>>98668193
>But it does lean harder into the misery and horror side of the setting that apparently some of the anons here hate.

>>
>>98668388
Once again, this isn't larp like you are trying to insist despite being corrected on
I'm not saying to do away with dice, I'm saying to have it be minimal in social interactions so that the players do roleplay.
Not have them just roll dice all the time and expect to get lucky with their successes
Dice rolls don't determine everything and good roleplaying should be rewarded

You exist as a souless, wretched being who even reality despises and rejects. Promethean is bleak. You are alienated and wrong, broken and missing a fundamental part compared to the world. Unlike other splats you can't ever really avoid that. The world will constantly remind you that you don't belong your not a mage, vamp or woof who could ever pull together some semblance of a normal life where you fit into a place or society. And to keep it on topic Proethean is not a setting where you can really push it to the heros with fangs/fur. The systems in place really push it towards the great work and the horror of alienation from the world and self.

It's not horror like CoC or whatnot. It's more an introspective horror. It's what makes it stand out.

It's over the most inconsequential mundane shit as well. It's practically semantics at this point.
Wherefore art thou bakeslave? This thread has nothing worth salvaging.
>>
>>98668496
It's a V5 shill who refuses to leave /wodg/ alone and tries to make everyone play according to the misery porn LARP playstyle.
>>
Hey so, I’m trying to piece together the Native American Ventrue vamp I mentioned earlier in the thread. How exactly does learning out-of-clan disciplines work? I want to add a bit of animalism to his arsenal but it’s not a Ventrue clan discipline.
>>
>>98668509
You roleplay and you roll dice if the ST thinks that it wasn't good enough to warrant an automatic success or automatic failure
None of that is larping, it's actually playing the game as intended
>>
>>98668524
No, that's cheating. You roll dice in order to determine the outcome. It's a game. It has rules. You abide by the rules or you're cheating at the game.
>>
>>98668468
The usual arguing between technocrats and everyone else. One hermetic leaving his useless chantry in search of a new one. Void Engineer looking into Grays kidnapping people, resident marauder shizoposts. I don't think a tldr can truly describe anything mage related.

Oh, never mind, it says you’d need a tutor right there. Amazing what you can learn when you read the actual text!
>>
>>98668528
That's not cheating, that's with in the confines of the game's rules and spirit
Cheating would be loading your dice to get high rolls every time
Something you're having a hard time understanding

I think these were the flea banes bakeslave was talking about. Better to wait for the shampoo and comb to take effect before he makes the next thread.
>>
>>98668542
Cheating is acting outside of the rules in order to gain an advantage. There are no rules that say that you should automatically succeed or fail at a roll because of how you roleplayed, hence doing so is breaking the rules.
>>
>>98668561
It is with in the ST's rules to let that be an option just how other rules are allowed and not aloud based upon the kind of game the ST is doing
It's not hard to understand
>>
>>98668448
You will be surprised to discover that myseryporn has been in use for years to referer to the type of garbage narrative forced up by slop like V5 and Paracuck shit. It was not invented by that anon or this thread. But of course you never heard of it in your shitty discord huge box.
>>
>>98668580
If you're ignoring the entire rulebook in order to just say that whatever the ST says goes, then you might as well not play VtM at all and just play pretend with the ST. In other words, LARP.

>>
>>98668588
It's not ignoring the rulebook, it's using it as a guide line to able to play the game based upon how the ST and players enjoy playing it
It's literally not larp
It's not hard to understand

Being a vampire isn't all sunshine and rainbows (literally), but you CAN find happiness if you work for it.

>>98668616
When you're disregarding the game in order to determine results through your play-acting rather than the actual rules of the game, you're LARPing, not playing a game.

When you disregarding the rules, you're not using them as a guideline. Why are you lying?
>>
>>98668022
STs using family as easy ammo for drama hasn't been popular in like 20 years anon. Nowadays players already come with the family tragedy pre-baked.
>>

It's not disregarding the rules, it's using them based upon the situation
I'm not lying, everyone does it in every ttrpg
You're making it seem like it has to be like judge dredd abiding by the rules all the time or else the game is ruined
>>
>>98668660
It's a game, you're not playing the game if you're not abiding by the rules, you're just cheating. In your case, you might as well not be playing a game and just LARPing.
>>
>>98668667
It's not cheating at all and it's not larp

No, it lets you focus on the actual meat and fun of the game, which is vampire intrigue and politics, without being weighed down by babysitting humans and potentially being punished for rising the Masquerade by interacting with cattle.

The Mystery Man in the Arachnidguy costume shouts "Dick of the Infinite!" and his dick grew three sizes.
>[player]: I examine his outfit
>[st]: (...nothing subtle here,)
Checking him out, you notice that his costume is kind of cheap looking--nowhere near the quality of something from down at the Soul Samhain. It looks real stretchy.
He jumps into the ground with a whistle and a fart before you can make sense of much else. You didn't see a hole there, though.
You hear a shloop behind you, and in that moment, you can already of tell it's about the room's distance away...
>[player]: I turn to see what the heck it is
You turn around, and can see a waist-high red teepee sticking out of the ground...
>[player]: (doubtful) it's his di[st] (affirming) it's his dick.

>[st]:Give me a... Perception/Lore, difficulty 5.
>[player]: *rolls* 10, 10, 2, 1, 1... 1.
The Mystery Man in the superhero costume shouts "Dick of the Infinite!", but you got skin oil in your eyes and it stings--
>[player]: skin oil?
>[st]: yes, uh, you know, like when you're minding your own business on a no-shampoo day then BAM--
you're so focused on rubbing your eyes, they're just tearing up you can't help it, by the time you look up, the guy is just gone.
>[st]: Also, Wits/Awareness, difficulty 6
>[player]: *rolls* 10, 7, 7, 5FUCK
>fuck
>ok I got it, it was on a 2 on the ground, see it?
>[st]: Yeah. OK,
you sense a sort of rift opening behind you, about the room's length away...
>[player]: I turn to see what the heck it is
behind you, you see a waist-high red teepee sticking out of the ground.
>[player]: (doubtful) it's his dick, isn't it?
>[st]: intelligence/investigation
it flops a tiny bit, about an inch off-center to the left and right.
>[player]: (hand paused mid-air, not really grabbing for the dice) ...it's his dick
>[st]: dickiculty 6
>[player]: what?
>[st]: difficulty 6

>You exist as a souless, wretched being who even reality despises and rejects. Promethean is bleak. You are alienated and wrong, broken and missing a fundamental part compared to the world. Unlike other splats you can't ever really avoid that. The world will constantly remind you that you don't belong your not a mage, vamp or woof who could ever pull together some semblance of a normal life where you fit into a place or society.
Broadly correct, BUT there is the Magnum Opus, which is an unambiguous upgrade and happy ending (or at least satisfying closure) for your personal story. It's not easy by any means, but if you persevere enough you'll get there.

>And to keep it on topic Proethean is not a setting where you can really push it to the heros with fangs/fur.
Also broadly correct BUT it's entirely possible to be a protector/vigilante and make it work. In fact two Roles from different Refinements are about protecting something or someone, and avenging wrongs, respectively.

>The systems in place really push it towards the great work and the horror of alienation from the world and self.
It's very instrospective indeed, like you said. I think it's part of what makes it so fascinating.

There's a power that explicitly lets you "win an argument" in oWoD.
It also explicitly tells the ST to not let it be an "I win" button.
What this tells us is that even the writer of the power couldn't agree on what they wanted the game to be.
>>
>>98668316
Over a long enough period of time (vampires duh), you're bound to fail more than you succeed (especially if you don't homebrew away the retarded botch system that makes you statistically more likely to fail the larger your dice pool).
It makes it so you're destined to give in to the beast eventually. No real way out except becoming a hermit or speedrunning your way to Glocunda before statistics rear their head (good fucking luck).
>>
>>98667230
I tend to forget that they had a whole thing with the core mechanics being changed between CofD, Scion and others.

>>98667251
Odds are that was them really wanting to avoid some of their cousin's, Exalted, problems.
As for the stat blocks? I honestly don't remember if the Storyteller has any good examples.
