>Microsoft is trying to save their business. I think you need to understand this: the Xbox business is in a very, very, very bad state. And you know what’s not going to solve it? BattleTech. What was wrong with this Jordan guy?
I wish there were laws against just sitting on an IP and just never using it. Imagine if Battletech had ended up becoming public domain.
>>98661124Many such cases
>>98661114He was retarded that is what is the short answer.Long answer Weisman really has no clue when it comes to long term business planning or sustaining a franchise. He is very good at seeing something new and starting it up but quickly abandons it to jump onto next interesting thing. When it comes to short term gain over long term financial success he'll take the former every time. You saw that with HBS that the moment it became profitable he took a quick paycheck selling it to Paradox rather than trying to nurture it.
>>98661114>What was wrong with this Jordan guy?He wanted to make money. And he did. He's a decent scifi writer, a decent game designer, and a decent businessman. With ADHD.He created a couple tabletop games, foresaw that computers were going to be a big thing with the pods, then sold to Microsoft and - here's the part you might not be aware of - Weisman went to work for them and became Creative Director of Microsoft Games. He was one of the creators of AR games. Then he invented clickytech. It wasn't a huge huge success, but it did make tens of millions of dollars before he sold it to Topps for even more. And so on and so forth until he started HBS to make the Shadowrun games among others, and then he sold it.He then founded Adventure Forge, a platform to help people who don't know how to code make games, and just recently founded a tabletop game publisher.tl;dr he starts a business, makes okay money, sells it a few years later, and then does it again. He doesn't try to find the Next Big Thing, being content just to make a few million here and there. As a businessman, he's very successful, if somewhat timid.
>>98661170He got a process down that reliably makes him millions. Why would he bother trying something he knows nothing about? That's like forcing Elon to design a car.

>>98662275Look for Alpha Strike games, and using the optional Multiple Attack Rolls rule. This gets you used to the idea and loose function of stuff like movement modifiers, attack modifiers, range, criticals, and rolling multiple times to resolve an attack. But a lot of it is more standardized than variable (ex. Alpha Strike Crits are all on one chart whereas Classic's Crits are variable depending on 'Mech, TMM in Alpha Strike is a single number if the 'Mech moves in any manner while Classic has it as variable depending on movement, etc.)Additionally, Alpha Strike has the ACES system designed for it that uses cards to simulate an opponent, allowing you to play Solo or Co-Op games. Thus meaning you can practice on your own, or functionally LARP as a novice Mechwarrior being tutored by an experienced one.

>>98662355How much is the battletech ip worth? And what kind of effort would need to go in to scrub the shit smears off and market it back into a silver age?
>>98662356Once something is in Microsofts grasp they will never sell. Just think of all the IPs they bought over the years and have done nothing with. Chris Roberts got his ass clapped by Microsoft back in the day but then in hindsight it may have been heavily justified.
>>98661576If the writers had any balls they would have let them get jihaded. All their cool characters aged out and got killed anyway.
>>98662275Those are kind of opposite wants. The deepest deep end you can get is a full campaign with meaningful objectives and all the accounting and optional rules and someone's flying full aerospace units overhead after launching them from an airbase or dropship using the actual rules for that. The shallow end is throwing some mechs at each other to see which ones die the fastest.

>>98662368>silver ageI'd say we're at least in a silver age right now. tabletop is getting new stuff every year and we at least still have the HBS game. the game itself is growing slowly, even if that is mostly due to other companies just committing suicide (TC) or abusing their customers (GW).but it's a long way off from penetrating the collective consciousness the way 40K has. Not that I necessarily want everything that comes along with that, but it will mean more and continued support for the game.

>>98662740Cryo-sleep exists in BattleTech. My headcanon is that him and the rest of the crew spend a lot of their downtime in stasis. Which, come to that, has its own drawbacks. They'd probably go crazy after a while doing nothing but killing while weeks or months pass between battles.

>>98662837I don't understand why their redesigns get praised when they're straight dogshit. They ruined the signature look of a ton of iconic mechs like the battlemaster and black knight and it's probably not a coincidence that the tabletop designs are becoming boxier and uglier to match.
>>98663059No one can look at this and claim their designs are touched by God

I can understand why they made the German faction use massive, impractical vehicles like the Demolisher II, but not why they made them incompetent. Germans aren't usually known for incompetence of all things.
>>98663047You can tell that he's a bit of a bastard.
It turns out making a horse is hard, but I'm getting there
>>98663814At the time, the Demolisher was a perfectly competent and successful idea. Mechs just outgrew it eventually, but for a moment things like Demolisher and Manticore hunted primitive mechs for sport and had them beat on sheer numbers produced.
>>98663855>the Demolisher was a perfectly competent and successful ideaIt really isn't, even the concept of it is just a shitty one. A heavy tank you put extra resources into so that when it inevitably gets a TAC or mobility crit you can flush even more money down the toilet? Tanks are meant to be cheap and disposable.
>>98663733Marik is only good at kicking its own ass.
>>98663862As long as the dead tank is worth less than the mech it died coring with dual AC 20s, it's a win in value.
>>98663869Personally, I'm just not a fan of short ranged, slow vehicles. They have their place, but I like something that can reach to large laser range at least if it's slower than 6/9.
>>98663869The issue with the Demolisher is that there really is no reason to put heavy armor on a tank. Tanks can't hold up to damage, even a light mech can take it out with a single shot so it's way better to just go with lots of light or medium tanks, and if you absolutely NEED the big guns, go with a tank destroyer.
>>98663814When you look at the history of the Lyrans, you get a sense of a slowly rotting system. The Lyrans have big industry, big hardware, big armies, the LCAF were a military who's rank and file were filled with professionals who could smash most things down with sheer force and tight logistics. It's only as Lyrans start getting a little too comfortable with their economic might that you start to see the issues that would eventually culminate into how infamously common social generals were, the military being turned into more of a frat for nepobabies than actual patriots. I'd go as far as to say the Dracs considered the Lyrans a much more formidable rival than the Feds before the LCAF degraded and the AFFS were reformed under Melissa Davion.
The 3025 Manticore is still a near perfect tank.

>>98663817I like that. He's running a mercenary company, and even though it's easy as fuck to end up on the pretty noble side of the reputation line, he should be because you're still doing some dodgy shit. Changes sides constantly too due to lack of long term contracts outside of the expansions, that guy in the Rasalhague was right to hate Mason and bang on about how you could be heroes there now but next fucking week be dropping on their asses to murder their citizens and not giving a single fuck.
>>98663999I refuse to allow this Manticore slander! Its a Griffin on treads! The only thing I will accept is that the 3055 "Upgrade" is actually a complete downgrade.

>>98663814>Germans aren't usually known for incompetenceThen why did they lose the only 2 wars in the 20th century that mattered, and why have they allowed their country to be overrun and conquered by foreign invaders?

>>98664197The srm6 and medium laser are nice to have. Also, remember that the lrm launcher has its own turret with 120' coverage so it can be used to IF on a separate target to the turret PPC on a main target.A squadron of manticores can put four ppc into one mech/vee and four lrm10's IF'd onto a target someone's spotted for them, say, a locust. Etc.Reminder, this is where vees shine. Combined arms.Let's say last turn you cooked your marauder hot by using all its weapons, well this turn it wants to cool off, so you run it to a flank and spot the enemy awesome it was duelling. Now in the fire phase your four manticores can add four ppcs and four lrm10's onto the awesome that the marauder can't.Same for having lrm carriers. Those things are just plain mean when you keep them in the ass, and let your lighter mechs spot for them, or heavier stuff spot whilst they're running hot.
>>98664354>Reminder, this is where vees shine. Combined arms.Vees shine by being cheap, they're actually kinda shitty at combined arms compared to mechs because they can't mount as many weapons.
>>98664197Bold opinion here. I do not care for the Griffin. The 1N has so many minor flaws that stack up>Minimum range>All weapons on one side and only two weapons so losing right torso essentially renders the mech useless>Has 3 heat build up if it jumps and fires PPC>Absolute maximum 20 damage in a turn>Has a 120 degree blind spot on its left and rear sideIt's just really inflexible while at the same time being a 55 ton medium that can only put out 20 points of damage at best and probably far less with the huge minimum range of LRMsBy comparison the shittiest Wolverine variant has a shorter range but>No minimum range>Weapons in three entirely different locations so hard to cripple it without outright killing it>Nearly heat neutral even if firing every weapon and jumping 5>Extended torso twist so no blind spotIt has generally shorter ranged weapons which is fine for a non-trooper jump capable medium which should have no problem closing to the enemy and unlike the Griffin it's not fucked if a single wasp decides to jump behind it and start kicking its legs since it can just turn and fire an SRM 6 and medium laser at it.

I guess if you wanted to represent Lyrans as more iconically German have them go through periods of successful commanders followed by a slide towards mediocrity before conflict forces them to rely more on competent generals. Eg.>First succession war Lyran generals are dogshit retards>By the end if the war competent generals start to gain more command and influence and can take advantage of industrial base>Second succession war Lyran generals are dogshit>Then they get goodJust cycles of competence and complacency which honestly are common in most militaries. You can see similar cycles in France, Britain, Russia, and even America.
>>98663814It's contextual, because it's a game made by Americans. They missed most of the mechanised war waged by the Germans, and really only got in at the end when Germany was exhausted, 80% of the Wehrmacht was on the Eastern Front, and Hitler was increasingly micro-managing his generals to disaster. So in their experience, Germans fought with heavy vehicles, mostly defensively, and made mad decisions (because otherwise how else would the Allies have won?).
>>98664388Vees carry more ballistics and missiles than mechs because they don't need heat sinks for them.

>>98666477They do need heat sinks, in fact they have to be heat neutral by the rules. They mostly benefit more from ballistics as space is less of a concern than for mechs. It's why you can easily put heavy ferro-fibrous armor onto most tanks, but with mechs you'll be left with next to no space left for weapons.
How many posters ITT have actually used vees on tabletop using TW rules?
>>98666498>>98666477>They do need heat sinks, in fact they have to be heat neutral by the rules.ICE engines have a special clause in that they don't generate heat for ballistic or missile weapons - you still need sinks for energy weapons on them though. My understanding is that this doesn't carry forward to fusion Vees.
>>98666498Secondary. Vees don't need heat sinks for ballistics and missiles. They must be great neutral for energy weapons. Have you ever opened up TechManual or used SSW or MML?
>>98666501I did it four or five times, including one game where I took two lances of tanks and a company of infantry against a lance of mechs. I won with heavy losses.
>>98666484Hanse actually played the political game to win instead of moralizing like his son. He was a proper Successor Lord. You can tell this even just with the 4th War when it was like "I can attack with all my might the country that killed my first love and paraded my brother's corpse through the streets in the biggest celebration of this century...or I can take the biggest landgrab since the 1st Succession War from the dude that tried to replace me with a body double. Let's do the second thing, but let's make it fun.">>98666501Most of us that aren't newfags as it's the standard way to play vehicles and has been since forever. All this abstraction and support stuff is what people have less experience with.>>98666508It's tanks as a chassis type that don't pay ballistic or missile heat regardless of engine. You build a Dieselback and you will still generate heat from your autocannons.
>>98666508ICE vehicles need power amplifiers for energy weapons and heat sinks. Fusion engines have 10 single HS, but power amps aren't needed. Ballistics and missiles don't need heat sinks, even with fusion. Vees cannot use double heat sinks, ever.
>>98666517>>98666519I meant it was a rule for vees specifically but forgot to include that, woops. I didn't actually know fusion vees didn't need them either though, that's a neat quirk.
>>98666501A few times. They can be fun but boy are they crit magnets. Had a Spider once one shot a Behemoth with a kick to the front that killed the crew instantly. Absolutely was insane that the dice came together to allow that especially since I managed to miss every single shot leading up to that point against said Spider.
>>98666544Units in Battletech are pretty much a rock-paper-scissors arrangement.Tanks are cheap mobile guns.Field Guns are the cheapest guns.Infantry are living landmines and spotters.BA are slightly more mobile more powerful infantry, but there are fewer of them.Protomechs are BA with mech movement profiles.ASF's are flying mechs who can wreck at a single nick, but can bomb the fuck out of everyone.Artillery is God Almighty until you drop into the middle of their formation.Mechs are the most resistant to crits and can squash any of them with the right loadout, but neglect your infernos and AOE weapons at your own peril. This is a nice hard counter to pure mech Turrettech. The Gausswall is better Gausswalled by Alacorns or Field Guns.

Both are respected as sagely visionaries by most people, regardless of their faction but in the end all either of them ever amounted to was enough good intentions to pave a hundred lane expressway to Hell, with off ramps in Tartarus, Michtlan and all nine Buddhist underworlds.
>>98667242True, it's pretty firmly established that most of Clan society is basically based on Capellan stuff with obvious parallels to Capellan society with the castes, a hyper-focus on the Mechwarrior like the Capellan Lorix Creed, a focus on elite rule like the Capellan Sarna Mandate, a pan-human doctrine of "unity" like the Capellan Korvin Doctrine, etc. The command structure purpose is the same. The political structure purpose is the same. Even the very expectations of the various groups is the same, to advance the will of the state (the clan). Almost shamelessly so. I suppose it's telling that a plurality (if not majority) of the early khans and saKhans were of Capellan origin. Nicholas was probably influenced by the collective society and saw it as something he wanted in his clans. Plus who knows, maybe early insurgents being Capellans triggered a form of Stockholm syndrome in his mind; he saw his father's Star League-in-Exile undone by Capellans and sought to so blatantly emulate them.

>>98667656>>98668147Why do the Dracs always get raped by the Bears?
>>98668224I think the real question here is how did the Nova Cats take so much losses.Of the Drac losses, the three Alshain regiments were lost when they kickstarted the whole war by jumping into the Alshain system without support and predictably got annihilated because it's one of the most heavily defended systems in CGB space, with multiple WarShips in-system and elite galaxies on the ground. The other losses is one F-tier regiment (Pesht, the worst equipped of the Drac military districts), two other district regulars regiments, and one more noteworthy regiment. Which is not unreasonable amount of losses going against elite Clan galaxies (at the start of the Clan invasion, the Clan clusters were regularly wiping out entire RCTs). But the Cats are themselves Clanners, with equipment and training that should match the Bears. Granted, most of the losses are garrison clusters, so 2nd line mechs with worse pilots, but that's still Clantech mechs with Clan pilots. You wouldn't expect them to be slaughtered wholesale while seemingly inflicting no losses on the enemy.

The Nightsky is perfect, beautiful mech, even its stock variant which I use the most even into the ilclan era. The poor Hatchetman though, I just can't get them to work well for me. The most I've gotten it to work is the 5D variant in urban environments where its UAC10 and targeting computer can do some work. I'm about to do a game with the 8S in hopes I can get some worth out of it.
>>98668634Hatchetman unironically would be better without the hatchet and if you just treated it as a Lyran Panther. Its not a good melee mech.

>>986688533Kr can work.
>>98668724I was thinking about how to fix the Hatchetman last night and thought about upping it to 50 tons, then it hit me that it would just be a Nightsky with extra steps at that point. I think a FWL style Hatchetman could be good though. Lighter laser based weapons so it can focus more on speed and armor. Armor being the biggest pitfall of the Hatchetman. It's a fine mech for urban combat but it struggles out in the open. I just want it to be good because I love it's design and name so much
>>98667007>My biggest question is why did they choose to betray clans? They were literally following orders. Kerlin Ward told them to betray the Clans.

Not only were the Bears an even bigger favorite at the time, based on the devs/writers interpretations of the fanbase, very few people liked the Nova Cats and ergo would not miss them if they were harmed. As a result, they made for perfect targets to job for the Bears and give them easy kill tallies.
>>98669385Second was supposed to be >>98668435I'll see myself out.
>>98666477Vees carry fewer weapons than mechs because they only have one turret usually, turrets are very heavy, which leaves them with one place to put their guns on, while mechs have their torso, both arms, and their shoulder, all of which can have weapons, and the arms and feet themselves are also weapons.
What even was the nova cats deal? Who were they, why were the only morally correct clan that took up arms alongside the inner sphere, and what are the spirit cats?
>>98669452Nova cats were the clans whose gimmick was having stronger nostalgia for the Star League than everyone else. Where do you guys source bits? A buddy of mine is giving me an Urbanmech R27 and I want to convert it to the Arrow IV variant. I'm having a hell of a time finding a laser like the left arm of picrel to do it

My tundra base for this locust came out okay, but I think the snow is a bit off-colored and maybe a bit too clumpy. Anybody got any good formulas or snow effect products you’d recommend?
>>98669910>The OG AIV Urbanmech that got canonized was just a regular metal one with a 40K Orc missile launcher attached to it.How did that happen? You aren't allowed to use non CGL bits during conversions if those components are made for another game. That couldn't have happened.

>>98670212I like how it comes in a pack of other shit mechs.
>>98670118I think it looks great. Snow only stays white and pure for a few hours or days, depending. Yours looks perfectly like it snowed a few days, the snow's gotten a little dirty, and it's blown and melted and refrozen.
>>98669780I bought a Death Ray Design weapon pack for a frankenmech project, but IWM sells individual sprues from most of their mechs, and also some random extra conversion bits.

>>98670314>only SRM ammo in a side torsoAnon likes it when his mechs explode
>>98670155How the hell did they actually make money on minis, then? A wargame company makes its own minis. That how it works. You'd never see someone else making GW's minis (Forge World being a GW imprint and all). Is Catalyst just run by stupid people who don't know how business works?
>>98670516Catalyst is a publisher at its core, they spent 2003-2007 making books, not wargame minis.
>>98670516Catalyst was never a Wargaming company like Games Workshop and honestly I don't even believe Battletech to even be a standard Wargaming Miniatures game. You can play this game with paper cutouts. Hell one of my friends literally used hexagon chips where he can write the names of each mech on.

Just about done
>>98671530Honestly it's looking pretty good, I'm not sure why they were afraid to just have the cockpit in the actual head of the original design. Those ass lasers are killing my sides though kek
>>98671551Tbh I prefer the head being in the torso. It makes the horse head look more like a decoration that some Clanner designer decided to add to make the mech look like their totem animal, as opposed to the khan specifically demanding a mecha-pony.
>>98671565Did you just forget that biped mechs have heads?
Just got into BattleTech (as far as actually playing). Here's my lance, sans an Archer I borrowed for my first game. Had a good time, but the group I played with only plays Alpha Strike, not Classic. How much am I missing out of the trve tabletop experience of BattleTech?
>>98671635You're missing about three quarters of it. Alpha Strike is a simplified system for bigger battles.
>>98671635Alpha Strike sands away a lot of individual character from mechs and reduces them to a pretty homogenous stat block. Lots of little nuanced design choices or even specific weapons get abstracted away and it leads to lots of mechs feeling too similar.
>>98671551>My poor much maligned Balius, clanner battle-pony. There were at least a couple of thought that lead the original design to end up where it did. My initial sketches were a bit more like this, but horribly horribly worse, and had a separated head/cockpit. But, pretty much all BT Quads don't go that route. They usually have integrated or bodied cockpits. The proportions of limb .vs. body mass distribution is usually very different than that of a horse as well, and if you know anything about drawing horses, one tiny f-up in proportions and it's a dog. Literally. so, it ended up with a body cockpit with a head piece adornment. From the horse's mouth, matt plog on his deviantart page where he posted this redesign.
>>98671653>>98671670Ouch, okay. I'll see if there's some guys in the larger group who will play classic as well. I definitely felt the homogeneous stat block thing. My Shadowhawk and Wolverine may as well have both been the same mech since they were doing the same damage at the same ranges.
>>98671598Quad mechs usually don't have a separate head, though.
>>98671670>>98671709It sorta depends on the era. 3025 era 'Mechs get this the worst, but later eras have a lot more equipment installed into them as standard and that causes a bunch of different keywords and special abilities to come into play on them that helps restore differentiation between 'mechs. You could well argue that the system as designed is for either earlier than the Second Succession War or for later than the FedCom Civil War. Third Succession War to Clan Invasion really doesn't have all the hooks it is looking for, even if you can covert them over. You're pretty much getting a simpler version of Introtech to give a more general introduction to Battletech (particularly with the optional Multiple Attack Rolls rule being applied)
>>98671708I take issue with the horsebot using a gigantic XL engine just to go 6/9. If it went down to 5/8 it could take a supercharger and have 9.5 tons to play with while still being able to run (10).

>>98673052My entire play style and love for war crimes is destroyed. I need a minute anon... I need a minute.
>>98673146I'm calling bullshit, not seeing anything about alternate LRM or SRM munitions being removed...
>>9867299190 tons is actually where construction rules can actually fuck them over especially when it comes to jump jets. Like the Highlander for example would legit be a vastly more efficient design at 85 as opposed to 90 tons.
>>98673103>>98673170The main rule book, retards. There is straight up no entry for smoke missiles in the LRM/SRM ammo section
>>98673272Which tracks since smoke LRMs weren't in TW either. It'll probably return as strictly optional in a later book. Smoke spam is one of those things you can do to make a game absolutely miserable, so it being core would have been a mistake.
>>98672881I buy shitty and overpriced IWM vees on purpose
>>98673287>Which tracks since smoke LRMs weren't in TW either.Weird, I figured they might be in the Battlemech Manual, but they're not there either...
>>98673423No, they're TacOps gear. I presume they'll remain so, as while some TacOps stuff is moved to the new main rulebook it's primarily stuff that's already in the BMM (Arrow IV and a bunch of late Jihad/early DA weapons and equipment).
Do the taurians do business with the Sea Jews? Are they capable of fueling clan tech in any capacity in the modern era?
>>98673564The periphery in general is capable of fielding some clantech by ilclan. I don't remember reading anywhere about the Taurians refusing to do business with shark foxes, and there's a trade in second line and re-re-re-refurbished invasion and post-invasion stuff circulating around the entire IS and near periphery.
>>98672991Chimera was fanon when Mechwarrior 4 launched? I had no idea
>>98673668Pretty much everything new in MW4 was non-canon at the time. Think something similar happened with MC2.
>>98673668Anything introduced in a vidya is apocryphal until reintroduced in a canon source. The canon Argo is much less insane than the vidya Argo, for example. Its multi-dock thing is pretty much a boondoggle.
>>98673668I worded it poorly it was later canonized because it was so kick ass. As said above stuff was added later some is semi canon that guy is 100%.On that note never saw why mw5 or mwo didn't add the Argus would look very much in place and was a stout mech.
What if there was a Rakshasa IIC?
>>98673897It would stand tall among the Black Hawk (Battlemech)s and Cougar Xs
>>98673897I've wondered why there was never an update to the machine but then I realized that if they actually did anything to fix the design at all it would go against the spirit of it. At the same time, doing anything to make a faster marauder would also go against the spirit of the Rakshasha as well which is really annoying. Not only does it cuck itself but it also sucks a good mech as well
>>98673292Show them to me.
>>98673897Lol
How do you pronounce Black Hawk KU? Kay-you? Coo? Queue?
>>98674321Coo, like Kurita.
Are there any non-omnimech space mechs?
>>98674321Kay-Yoo, saying the two letters separately
There are heavier variants of the marauder, which is cool, but why aren't their lighter variants of it as well? We have a crustacean mech in almost every class now as well as a Mad Cat in almost every class, why is the Marauder relegated to just getting heavier? I even sat down and workshopped up a 55 ton version with a similar loadout as a normal marauder in like 5 minutes
>>98674352Are there any OmniMech space Mechs?
New thread>>98674623>>98674623>>98674623
>>98674613The U variants are either for underwater or space, depending on which mech you're talking about.Water mechs generally get torpedoes, lasers, and UMUs if they don't have fixed jump jets. Space mechs get jump jets, liquid storage for reaction mass, and a melee weapon for boarding.
