I don't really care how much time they were wasting designing alchemy cards because it probably wasn't a lot given how often they made broken stuff, but there was a real effort to funnel new players directly into alchemy and keeping them there, this had a real impact on the game's ecosystem, throughout the years I saw multiple instances of:

I imagine this type of player would either stick with alchemy until they lost interest or eventually become a clueless historic player after their cards rotated, then they would get beat up by people playing actual good historic decks and get frustrated the same way

in other words, it's important to keep new players in standard, they'll figure out the rest after a rotation or two

Alchemy: Bad idea from the onset. They had the chance to create something unique, and they used it to print rule braking cards that nobody liked. I am still pretty new to this game and I have built a red deck with lots of funny little Goblins, treasure, and rite of the dragoncaller for turn 5-6, but I just can't win against green decks. The amount of bulk they accumulate on individual cards is a bit too much for my shock and lightning spam to counter act and it's gg turn 1 if I see it's landfall spam. I am considering introducing some blue into the deck as I think I am starting to understand why counterspell is so popular. It really is just to counteract green, isn't it. I miss destroying cards with my black deck, at least that tactic gave me some wins if I drew well on turn 1.
