Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Do you have a favorite city-crawl?

Very nice, Anon! I'd just popped the catalog to make the thread myself when I saw this appear.

>TQ
Not the most imaginative answer in the world, but it's gotta be the CSIO for me, the original and best.

>Do you have a favorite city-crawl?
Yoon Suin's city generator and old town material mixed with the Nocturnal Table or the urban adventure parts in Scarlet Heroes worked well.
I've been sitting on 1666 and wanting to us it for ages but the european style game isn't in an urban centre. Seems easy enough to adapt as needed.

Noob here
Somewhat related to City-crawls:
Are there any more adventures like Caves of Chaos and The Village of Hommlet? Those two are my favorite D&D adventures.
as in, modules with extremely detailed towns which are almost or more detailed than the actual dungeons.

N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God has a decent town in it.
>newer
Fever Dreaming Marlinko is a hill cantons gonzo sort of eastern euro city/town with some dungeons in it.
>other newer
In The Shadow of the City God is a more traditional design, bigger than a town, more a city hence the name but pretty good and worth a look.

Thanks, I'll take a look at those. N1 is one I actually already have the pdf so that's helpful.

I love to wax lyrical, slightly snobbish, and definitely melodramatic and philosophical after a session.

>On the Entrance to Xitaqa:

It is wondrous how so grand a settlement is punctuated by so low an inhabitantry and so majestic a surrounding. What we came across, turning round a great ridge, was nothing less than splendorous—an edifice to the potential of creation. It is art that, in some respects, has become even more artful with the passing of ages, where moss and the weathering of time have granted subtle shape and accent to intelligently crafted design. From grand bronze pillars to the smallest tile depicting a child at play, all of it remains resounding, long past its initial intent.

>But in this holy ground, those that currently call it home have no sense of reverence. Immaculate statues are turned into troughs for great slave-apes, and finely aged mahoganies are reduced to simple firewood. If they only knew what they possessed, they would revere it instead of consuming it.

>But then again, I am being too hasty; the needs of now necessarily outweigh the art of then, even if it be for the needs of simple and crude goblins. There is still a form of artistry in a statue turned into a cup of nourishment, and the work of master woodcarvers turned to the most primal need of warmth. I may have preferred it to stay sterile for posterity, and even though it is my enemies who despoil it, there is meaning in this too. I shall save what I can, but also appreciate the passing of things as well. For what is man if not the confluence of past and present streaming into the future?

mind reading - relaxed, hypnotized, and sleeping creatures (living) can have important information/memories gathered from their brain.
sustained ripple - objects and fluids imbued with a focused ripple can be held in place, against the forces of gravity.
ripple connotations - when used against the undead, it ignores any defense stats/buffs, and always inflicts burning.
way of the ripple - sendo is a lifestyle, and requires the relinquishment of any prior lifepaths or class training; any previous levels are reset to 1, however class feats already gained are kept. [2/9]

Spin:
>basic rotation (level 1 - 5)
small non-spherical objects (can be rotated toward or away the player).

weak materials (dirt, sand, gravel, wood-chips, and similar materials, can be ground into small spherical beads/1d4 damage when launched at opponents).

air spheres (can be formed by rotating the air with 5 feet of the players; this requires 2 full turns to perform, and can be used to force nearby objects or creatures 5 feet closer/1d4 + 2 spread damage up to 15 feet when dispersed).

hard materials (clay, aluminum, rust, and similar materials, can be ground down and formed into a small throwable sphere, the size of a pool ball/1d20 number of uses/1d6 + str damage when thrown).

strong materials (stone, meteorites, metal, etc... can be used to make unlimited use projectile spheres, that retain their shape upon use/2d4 + str damage when thrown.

>basic body modification (level 2 - 6)
"when utilizing sphere"
skin & bone (roll a d20 to successfully harden your own, or another's, body/reduces incoming damage by 1/3).

fluids (roll a d20 successfully force your own, or another's, body to expel large quantities of water/reduces a creature to a lower weight/size class).

repel (force a creature out of melee range or disperse lightweight hazard/free action).

limb twist (roll a d20 to successfully coil up the targeted limb of an opponent/at the end of the target's next turn, they are forced to perform an action of your choice/attack self > trigger nearby trap > leap > grab object > destroy object > turn around).

pain dull (removes a creatures ability to feel pain temporarily).

close wound (removes poison or bleeding/once per encounter).

rapid aging (grants humanoids an aged appearance temporarily, and results in a more youthful appearance for 1 day after the effect wears off/slows movement/free action).

simple mirage (camouflage a 5-foot radius within range, within line of sight/performed by spinning sphere in place along the ground/2 turns). [3/9]
>>
>golden rotation (level 6 - 12)
"when observing golden rectangle"
enhanced spheres (2d6 + dex damage on hit/a natural 20 roll allows a second sphere to be thrown, if available, and a subsequent natural 20 automatically knocks the target unconscious).

enhanced body modification (using a sphere; spend a turn to flatten your own, or another's, body for 1 round/halves incoming damage).

satellite sphere (for one turn, halt a sphere mid-throw for as long as you want/this sphere can no longer be used, however any sphere that collides with it will gain a plus +2 to accuracy, if intended to strike a creature or object).

>>
>perfected golden rotation (level 14)

medium sized creature from within a thrown sphere; with this same creature being available to be manifested upon any natural 20 roll the occurs after the first summon/creature ignores defense on successful attack rolls).

>ultimate powers (level 15, rolled by 1d4)
enhanced rapid aging (every turn the opponent spends within 2 to 3 feet of the summoned creature, they age considerably/decreases all stat modifiers by 1 each round).

infinite rotation (after a summoned creature successfully strikes an opponent, that opponent will be forced by to the location it was hit/return happens at the end of each round, and can only be canceled by with the consent or death of the player).

explosive spin (adds 1d4 + 1 blast damage onto any projectile attack done by the player's summoned creature/once per round).

go beyond (any liquid projectile a summoned creature has access to, can be charged for two full rounds before being fired; the charged projectile moves in a straight line, and bypass all obstructions/deal 1/3 of the targets health/pushes the target 10 to 20 feet backwards). [5/9]

Stands:
>direct contact
Certain stand users have to get their hands dirty during combat. Their stands might possess an overwhelming power, however their physical capability is limited, and their range extends only to the users own body. D is the maximum range possible for this category of stand, and unless the ability strengthens over time after activation (ex: i am a rock), then it's safe to assume that D is the extent of it's potential as well. Killer Queen and 200 Balloons are two stands that work through direct contact with a target; fittingly, their abilities ignore defense, so high speed/ high speed would a good template for a stand like this.

[primary stand stat: power]
A - activates upon contact, B - activated as a free action after contact, C - activates the next turn after contact, D - activates 1 round after contact, E - activates 2 rounds after contact.

>indirect contact
The alternate to contact stands; utilizing bodily fluids and inanimate objects to deal damage to opponents. Sex Pistols and Ebony Devil are two examples of the variety this category of stand possesses. These stands focus of precision, staying, and range, being able to operate far from the user (empress is another excellent example); a template of high range and high staying, with a similarly poor potential as with direct contact stands.

[primary stand stat: staying]
A - persists after user's death, B - persists after user loses consciousness, C - persists under 25% health, D - persists at 1/3 health, E - persists at 1/2 health.
>>
[6/9]

>martial combat
Rather than solely relying on their ability, martial stands are great for ending conflicts quickly, using the physical fighting prowess of the stand itself. The vast majority of combat focused stands are humanoid and possess a C in range or power; their abilities are often time simplistic and limited, yet the stands potential for growth is helped by their greater mobility. A good template for this category of stand, would be Crazy Diamond (with its A in speed and power, while having a mere D in range).

[primary stand stat: power]
A - capable of explosive-level physical output, B - capable of ballistics-level physical output, C - capable of demolitions-level physical output, D - capable of lethal physical output, E - capable of blunt-force physical output.

>ranged combat
If you don't feel like putting your stand, or yourself in harms way, then a ranged stand can mitigate most risks; at the expense of dealing the same amounts of damage as other categories of stands. Hierophant Green is the go to template for this type, being physically bullied by most other stands, but capable of locking down a city-block with a long range projectile trap (20-meter emerald splash); a long range/low damage stat spread is to be expected of these types, so it's best to focus on precision.

[primary stand stat: range]
|A - projectiles fired from long range/extends indefinitely, B - projectiles fired from mid range/extends to long range, C - projectiles fired from mid range, D - projectiles fired from close range/extends to mid range, E - projectiles are generated and controlled directly from the user's body.| [7/9]
>>
>elemental
Stands that channel godlike power, by alternate the fabric of reality itself. This manipulation of forces usually extends to basic laws of nature, such as heat (Magicians Red), electricity (Red Hot Chili Pepper), or liquids (Clash); however, physics altering stands like The World and Wonder of U can fit this category too. These stands are ridiculously strong, yet physics itself can often get in the way, since many of these stands possess the properties of the elements they control. Development might be the best stat this type have going for them, due to the natural creatively afforded by playing around with nature; this is why i believe Gold Experience is the best template stand to use as a base. GE is an extremely physically average stand that provides its user nearly limitless creativity; a high potential/ average strength, and slow speed stand.

[primary stand stat: potential]
A - gains an act every 5 levels, B - gains a sub-stand at 10th level, C - gains a related ability every 5 levels, D - ability becomes more complex after 8th level, E - ability receives a +1 increase to its attack roll modifier every 2 levels.

>object
This category is pretty self explanatory. These stand appear as either regular stands that function as objects, or are bound to physical objects. Bound stands can be seen and destroyed by non stand users, and are the only stands that function this way. Anubis is the easy pick for a template stand; a destructible, yet destructive stand, that becomes unstoppable over time. Anubis' user is long dead, meaning it also helps illustrate the main strength of bound/object stands, which is their resilience.

[primary stand stat: staying]
A - resists high-powered explosive forces, B - resists natural disasters, C - resists intense pressure, D - resists superhuman strength, E - resists brute force.

(note: anomalous stand abilities, like Tattoo You!, are up to player discretion.) [8/9]
>>
>A.O.E
These stands rarely if ever fight, when they even need to, and usually perform poorly against other stands. This is why, their abilities then to focus around reducing the capability of opponents, such as Grateful Dead and Man in the Mirror. The obvious template here, is Green Day, an incredible slow and weak stand, that forces every organism in range to play by its rules, unless they quickly perish; instantaneous ability, with absurd range.

[primary stand stat: speed]
A - ability triggers instantly upon meeting condition, B - targets suffer worsening effects of the ability the long it's active, C - targets gradual suffer effects after conditions are met, D - a single target passes on the effects once the condition is met, E - ability activates after a designated period of time once the conditions are met.

>automated
Theoretically the strongest category of stand, if it wasn't for the lack of control. These stand do not return damage taken to the user, and often can't be destroyed. These stands really on precision and speed to carry out automated tasks/goal, though they usually have a built-in deactivation condition. California King Bed is a decent template; it lacks any combat potential, but easily neutralizes opponents. Not much to say for this type, other than fully grasp the nuances of the ability before trying to activate it; remember to specify activation and deactivation conditions.

[primary stand stat: precision]
A - can perform tasks regardless of difficulty or distance, B - can perform tasks at an incredibly long range with little difficulty, C - can perform tasks at long range with moderate difficulty, D - can perform tasks at close range some difficulty, E - struggles to perform most tasks when away from its user.

As for colony stands... unless the colony numbers in the hundreds like Harvest, then assume most enemies can easily dispatch of individual units. [9/9]

It's system agnostic, so the save would be based on similar saving throws built into that system. Same goes for any other unspecified details. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is an old 80's manga, the ripple is the first power we see the heroes use, and it's designed to kill undead monsters. The ripple can be send through living creatures to destroy objects, or sent through objects to kill living and undead creatures.

Questions for those who have played. Im reading through some modules and I am wondering how combat would become more dynamic once youve already engaged in melee with a foe? I think you can move some distance while keeping in combat, but disengaging is not so much a thing.

Also, is combat being a rarer thing a meme? in the modules I have been looking at combat encounters seem pretty dang regular.
>>
>>98692781
>Also, is combat being a rarer thing a meme
Kinda, combat is not the point. Getting treasure is what you are after so if you can think of a way to avoid the fight while getting the loot you just do that. Also a lot of OSR discourse focuses on low level play which feels more like you are pulling off a heist than storming a dungeon because you are so fragile. But after a few levels you are no longer in dange of dying to a single random hit so you may opt into more fights.
>>
>>98693174
I found by level 3 players are confident and by level 4 they can cut swaths through 1 or 2 HD foes in straight fights.
>>
>>98692781
>I think you can move some distance while keeping in combat
In combat, yes, of course. But once engaged in melee, nope. See below.

>disengaging is not so much a thing.
It is. You can retreat or perform a fighting withdrawal.

Also remember that you cannot move and attack in the same round unless you charge.

>is combat being a rarer thing a meme
Not sure if it's a meme, never heard of that personally. Rarer with respect to what, exactly?

>in the modules I have been looking at combat encounters seem pretty dang regular.
What modules are you reading?

Either way, yes, combat is pretty frequent: D&D is a wargame, after all. However, it's important to be aware that XP from treasure makes up 75% to 90% of the total XP in a properly written dungeon, so the risk-reward is really rather unfavourable. Ideally players want to minimise fighting and only take on opponents that they can defeat easily, under circumstances that give them better odds.

As a result, running away is also relatively common.
>>
>>98693174
It also helps that combats are generally quick and decisive, there's no four-hour combat happening that takes up the entire session
>>
>>98693174
>>98693224
>>98693238
Makes me wonder how many encounters you were supposed to be able to get through in a day. there are towers and dungeons with like 5 combat encounters in a row, and even if you sneaked or absolutely bodied one or two, I would think HP and resource drain would hit pretty hard.

For reference working through nights dark terror solo as per >>98683583 and have been for months (though have taken long breaks between). Really love the settings descriptions and maps.
>>
>>98693317
Be aware that Night's Dark Terror is NOT a stellar example of a well-written D&D module. It has a sandboxy section at one point that is more or less okay, but it's overall extremely railroady. And as you noticed the the Tower of Golthar is a classic example of that: PCs must go there, they must fight through its levels, and they have to face Golthar. Going somewhere else to do something else is not an option. That's crap.

If you want to get an idea of what good modules look like, read e.g. B1, B2, Stonehell, or Barrowmaze instead. Notice how open-ended and unscripted they are.
>>
>>98693405
Yeah, NDT is kinda shit. If you were sold the module as a beloved classic of the OSR, then you might have gotten meme'd on by our local 2etard.

IDK I have really enjoyed it. the wide sandbox narrowing into a more linear structured rough before widening again has been a really refreshing loop so far. The description for places and events are great! The Hutaakan ruins really come to life and shit like the invisible minotaur in a room filled with invisible walls, and Golthar going between various portriats to fire spells at you while two statues attack you are just really inspired setpieces!

Schlepping around eastern Karamikoes is fine, and there are nice side quests like the evil mirror that mindfucks faries, but some point a to point b stuff is a nice change of pace.

Its just the pure combat math that I am not sure of how is supposed to be interpreted. Great combat set pieces, but it seems odd how you are suppose to face them one after another with a health deficiet.

Im enjoying it quite a bit, its just the specifics.
>>
>>98693317
A thing to remember is just because monsters are in a room doesn't mean they stay there. If you attack a section of dungeon controlled by orcs if they rais the alarm orcs in nearby rooms should move into the fight.
>>
>>98694299
I had that in mind. In a previous building in the same ruin complex, there were 3 rooms with goblins and it specificly stated that the others from the other rooms would arive in x turns after significant combat noise was made unless there was a silence spell.

It can be a bit tricky however to decide just who goes where when shit hits the fan. There is 3 distinct subfactions in Xitaqa. The slave-apes, the goblins, and the hob goblins, and how they interact besides roughly being in alliance is a bit up to dm discression.

NOTE: This is for Ad&d only, and still not totally correct. You *can* movie and attack without charging, if you are within 10 of melee range.
>>
>>98694514
Did you even bother rolling reactions?
>>

Isn't it the case also for OD&D?

>You *can* movie and attack without charging, if you are within 10 of melee range.
In AD&D, if you are within 10 feet of melee you don't need to move at all to attack. Or did you mean something else?
>>
I've been running Stonehell, and I love it, but it seems like the treasure is a little light. Are you supposed to roll on the treasure tables for all the monsters keyed in rooms, in addition to whatever treasure it specifies for that room?
>>
>>98695675
>I've been running Stonehell, and I love it, but it seems like the treasure is a little light.
It is on the first floor, because that's where other parties are assumed to have explored already.

>Are you supposed to roll on the treasure tables for all the monsters keyed in rooms, in addition to whatever treasure it specifies for that room?
You can certainly increase the treasure if you want, but you're definitely not *supposed* to roll on treasure tables in addition to whatever any given module lists unless explicitly instructed to do so.

If you do decide to change treasure, remember the rule of thumb that between 75% and 90% of all XP should be from treasure.
>>
>>98695797
>You can certainly increase the treasure if you want, but you're definitely not *supposed* to roll on treasure tables in addition to whatever any given module lists unless explicitly instructed to do so.
That reminds me, for wandering monsters/random encounters, do you roll treasure or do you just assume intelligent ones have the bare minimum of what they'd be carrying, like arms and supplies?

>If you do decide to change treasure, remember the rule of thumb that between 75% and 90% of all XP should be from treasure.
That shouldn't be a problem. If anything it might be lower than that so far because they've killed or overcome a number of monsters but barely recovered any treasure.
>>
>>98694805
what in my post was homebrew?
>>98694835
Their disposition is granted given the situation, they are employed to enslave and stop the prisoners from escaping. I guess there is some variety given personality, but the situation was pretty cut and dry.
>>
>>98696120
By the book, randomly encountered monsters do not have treasure unless encountered in their wilderness lair, or (AD&D) they only have treasure of the "carried on the person" treasure types which will typically be a few gold. There are exceptions, such as the ogre's sack (or is it the hill giant? Shit, now I can't remember off the top of my head), but in general, the concept of wandering monsters is to be an unprofitable resource drain that's best avoided. Otherwise dawdling, making noise and so on wouldn't be penalized as clearly.

>what in my post was homebrew?
Saltanon is salty. You're good, just ignore him.
>>
>>98696120
>they've killed or overcome a number of monsters but barely recovered any treasure
To be clear: That 75% to 90% is per level, not per encounter, room or session. A good chunk of it might be hidden or hard to retrieve, particularly if you're closer to 90% than 75%. So it's normal to have individual delves in which little to no treasure is earned.

Any tips or advice for playing cleric that is aligned to chaos rather than law? I know that my cleric spells work in reverse to how they normally do, and my DM says that I can have my turning still work against undead if I want.
>>
>>98697048
It's usually not a good idea because, for PCs, reversed spells are often worse than their unreversed version. Cause light wounds is basically useless, and your party needs neutralise poison, cure disease, and remove curse much more often and much more desperately than it does poison, cause disease, or bestow curse.

Evil Clerics are more for NPCs and monsters.
>>
>>98697048
Anon's right, but I would also add that the evil Cleric's power over the undead is actually better than the good Cleric's. "Rebuke" is underspecified but regardless of how it's interpreted it's at least equivalent to turning, and he ends up being able to command the undead rather than destroy them.
>>
>>98697840
>>98698649
Yeah... I didn't think about this. I think our party still has enough healing and utility from the other clerics in our stable of characters. But I don't wanna put us in a bind just for the sake of trying something different (At least, not yet. I'll wait until everyone is more powerful to use stuff like this.)

Thanks guys.

>10 feet of melee you don't need to move at all to attack. Or did you mean something else?
Are you actually retarded? You need to be in melee range to attack. That is determined by the length of your weapon. You are allowed to move up to 10 ft to put yourself within melee range in order to attack, otherwise you have to charge if you move and attack.

Mocking and insulting Saltanon is fun and well deserved, but it shouldn't get to the point of lowering the level of discourse on this general to the angry retard's level. So here's an infographic on weapon length and striking range in the DMG for anybody who might be interested.
>>

No, (You) Saltanon are.

Only correct claim in the paragraph.

>That is determined by the length of your weapon.
Wrong. Weapon length does not influence striking range.

>You are allowed to move up to 10 ft to put yourself within melee range in order to attack,
Wrong. You can move up to your base speed to get into the strike range of 1".

>otherwise you have to charge if you move and attack.
Wrong. You ALWAYS have to charge if you want move and attack in the same round.

They're different enough thematically I would have a hard time with them in such proximity without some redesign. Keep on the Promised Lands with the pyramid in the nearby desert and the Wadi of Chaos could be neat.
Might accidentally put yourself out of enjoyable level range for one if you focus on it too much and return to the other as a L3 Scarlet Heroes character, they get formidable quite quickly against large groups of low HD monsters.
>>
>>98708722
>Wadi of Chaos
This is actually great. I think the Keep would make perfect sense as a border fort on the outer margin of the fertile region surrounding the !Nile or !Euphrates, with the creatures of Chaos inhabiting the Land of Set/Empty Quarter. Really makes it obvious why they'd want to invade civilized lands, too.

I really miss posting about playing my game but for the life of me I don't think I can make a report that involves a 6HD two headed snake with 2 death poison attacks, rend and constrict going down like a chump because it lost initiative some archers and 8 wardogs and the follow that up with we retraced our steps throu the ruined temple, bumped into some skeletons who basically evaporated in front of us but we finally make it into the lower level and encounter some gnolls. We try the least convincing "how do you do fellow servants of chaos" you can think of and have a one sided fight.

I am really hoping the lake of blood we spotted through a hole in lower level ceiling and canoe we brought will lead to an interesting story when we get there.

What the 2efag and "open OSR" people fail to understand is that once people outside the Lake Geneva crew got their hands on the rules, lots of people were playing what we see as "modern style D&D". This style of play has existed nearly just as long as the OSR style. So the way we define OSR can not simply be "it's old so it's OSR", otherwise OSR is meaningless. OSR HAS to be intrinsically tied to Gygaxian gameplay, otherwise the term can be used for literally anything

I'm sick of fantasy at the moment; what's the most useful oblique reference you've used for OSR? I mean a book/film/etc. that nominally has little or nothing to do with RPGs or the fantasy millieu in general.
David Macaulay's books are absolutely fantastic for this, especially Castle and Cathedral. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is also basically a cheat code for setting generic late medieval urban scenes and I recommend the Krailsheimer translation.

>Y'know, on that note, there must have been some really brutal behind-the-scenes slapdown
Did you see the screencap of him crying to the mods on IRC a while back? The conversation was basically
>/osrg/ won't discuss 2e and when I try to make alternative OSR threads that include 2e they get deleted as spam pls tell /osrg/ to allow 2e >:(
>They don't have to allow it if they don't want to; stop making duplicate generals and just make a thread about 2e if that's what you want to talk about
>I tried that but nobody posted in them

Pretty good, took a lot more work to fill in the hexes than I was used to with size vs content.
Had to add in scrolls and rituals all over the place like it was candy for it to come up but I think that is the idea.
Didn't like the random HD so stopped using that.
Random encounters are still quite deadly in ways that were hard for me to gauge, travelling really requires the party accepting they could easily die.
Psionics felt unsatisfying but I'm not sure I've ever read anyone else having a good psionics system experience. That shit is like the holy grail of osr.
Got to figure out how much sexual violence I was interested in describing and my group was okay with. They were more okay with it than I anticipated and I was less interested in it than I thought I would be.
There's buckets of material for it scattered all over, blogs, zines, etc.
Taking basic monsters from the original manual and mutating them was a lot of fun. Intelligent insect headed Plesiosaurus was one of my favourite.
8/10 but needs a lot of DM effort and a group that's able to lean into being some of the gonzo.
>letting players chose what colour they are
never even occurred to me.

>what's the most useful oblique reference you've used for OSR?
I don't know if I can do most useful but I've had a mashed together Kantian transubstantiation at the centre of the not holy roman empire as a radioactive time and space displaced metaphysical concept trapped in a megadungeon and early modernism when I was reading the three critiques. Basically just increased the amount of clerical babble vocabulary to include things like
>Appreception of apriori incursion, sythnesis unacceptable, invoke third order antimony
and Bleasphemous' art style.
It was amusing to do and sufficiently weird for the players but it was mostly aesthetics and getting to call a giant cannon monster

This is an unfortunate reality I may have to accept but would not want to discourage people. I think a lot of the problem comes from having simultaneous magic and psionic systems.
I hear the one in Stars Without Number isn't terrible but the bar isn't high.
>>
>>98710612

I feel the same way and felt bad making my last post but
>I think a lot of the problem comes from having simultaneous magic and psionic systems.
this makes me think a good psionics system might have a lot of overlap with existing magical systems due to both inherently being supernatural powers.
>>
>>98710546
I mean, this sort of thing is ultimately up to your referee. By the book the other races dislike them, though, because they look like skeletons.

I would do a quick assessment of the group's composition and whoever they were dealing with to see if it mattered for reaction rolls but otherwise not much. I didn't want to get bogged down on the human colour racism angle and was okay with it being more akin to a scifi pulp

bit.
>>
>>98710635
>>98710661
I think a sufficiently capable DM could swap out one for the other with reskinning but trying to make it mechanically different is an interesting idea. The vocabulary for tsr psionics is undeniably cool sounding with things like
>Ego Whip
and
>Psychic Fortress
and the idea of a double blind or poker like game is appealing but trying to make it functional without being too streamlined to the point its no longer interesting to play is challenging.

Haven't seen it myself, but there's another 180ish pages of stuff compared to the copy I have. Not sure I want to buy it, would have to see a copy and if the differences are useful enough to justify the cost, already having a book and the janky release so ts not likely.
He's a greasy ball of sperg but at least he's trying to be honest with people and explain what's going on with their releases.

AD&D psionics by the book except for Courtney Campbell's rules for psionic combat works pretty well.
>>
>>98710480
>I'm sick of fantasy at the moment
You don't have to run fantasy, you know. Planetary adventure in the vein of John Carter or Tschai is eminently compatible with D&D.

>Did you see the screencap of him crying to the mods on IRC a while back?
Of course I saw it. Hilarious, but that didn't stop him from trying to make his faggy alternative generals in the first place.

>>98710516
>Psionics felt unsatisfying
IMO the main flaw is how rare he makes it. If he'd tripled the chances you'd still see less than one per group of PCs on average, and it would be more of a factor in play. I really like how he made it a clearly separate system from magic/sorcery, though.
>>
>>98710747
I have to say, I really wish he'd just released the quartet of modules in LotFP-ized form for those of us who already have print copies of the old edition. But given that he had to reprint the core book anyhow, I can't really bring myself to blame him. I'm probably picking up a copy despite owning the original, so...

is there a guide for converting any other dnd system to an OSR system?
>>
>>98713659
It's easy: Take that 5e book, pull it off the table, then put down OD&D, 1e. or B/X (or any respectable clone thereof) in its place, and play some OSR.
>>
>>98713659
What is it that you need to convert, exactly?

monsters
>>
>>98713996
The vast majority of monsters from WotC editions already exist in first decade editions. Just look up the name of the monster on B/X, the Monster Manual, Fiend Folio, and Monster Manual 2, and you're done. If you can't find an exact match, find the closest one and adjust accordingly.

For instance if WotC has a Brown Dragon that vomits diarrhea, look up Black Dragon in B/X or the MM and just change its breath weapon.
>>
>>98713659
As you'll probably have realized by now, no, there's no detailed, formalized guide. You have to use >>98714011's approach, which is good and simple but doesn't necessarily provide exact challenge equivalents, That's not really an issue, though; the main problem is that the adventures the modules are in have fundamentally different expectations about what gameplay is going to be like than old-school editions, so if you're covnerting monsters in order to convert modules you're going to end up having a bad time.
>>
>>98710120
>constructive suggestion
Read some zoz, play out the monty haul campaign and grow as a person into wanting something more engaging.

example;
the 2e elder brain is an ok monster, brain in a pool with psionics
https://www.completecompendium.com/appendix/eldebrai/
the 3.5 elder brain total junk as it has things that it should not have and is overpowered as fuck, its a Kaiju at this point (can fly, DR: 15/adamantine when its a squishy brain and many other stuff and its also a sorcerer and not a psionicist)
https://www.realmshelps.net/monsters/block/Elder_Brain

how do i convert this to rules cyclopedia dnd? what is an OSR elder brain like?
>>
>>98714713
>how do i convert this to rules cyclopedia dnd? what is an OSR elder brain like?
Well that depends on which one you want, doesn't it? If you want a kaiju or you're converting a 3e adventure, convert the 3e one. If you like the 2e one better or you're trying to adapt a 2e adventure, start with that one. (I'm not sure who or what decides that it "has things it shouldn't have", better to discuss this from the point of view of what's being converted.)

I mean, this seems like a no-brainer to me; context determines your choices. AFAIK Elder Brains aren't in 1e, so there's no platonic form of an OSR Elder Brain that you can try to approach. (Or maybe they exist in the MMII or whatever, in which case, just look it up there.)
