I really dont see how "rolling" for everything in the character creation (Expecially races) is fun when it just makes you scrap your character idea and most players then roleplay and play worse.

also why is it soo common to be in classless systems? isnt the entire fucking point of a classless system to BUILD your own character? why is it such a hard concept to understand for writers?
>>

>I really dont see how "rolling" for everything in the character creation (Expecially races) is fun when it just makes you scrap your character idea and most players then roleplay and play worse.
It fits for different style of play. Less plot driven theather kid campaign.
>>
>>98691491
Different people have fun with different things.
That's why there are so many different kinds of games.

Little autist.
>>
some systems actively encourage making extra characters due to how squishy they are starting out
dungeon crawl classics suggests in its rulebook to roll up to fifteen characters and playing whoever is still alive after the first dungeon
>>
Can breed creativity. Anyone can have a dark brooding half elven princeling destined to wield the holy sword of bullshit as he reclaims his homeland from his usurping, anti-elven uncle.
But the dice have given me a centaur shaman. In a pirate campaign. How the fuck has that happened?
>>
>>98691491
Counterpoint: MAID

Basically roll for the character concept first, then roll for the stats. If your character turns out to not be competent, you just roll with that, because you now have a clear character motivation as well.
>>
>>98691491
>why is it soo common to be in classless systems?
How common is it? Post some stats
>>
>>98691672
>weeb jap shit

no thx

>>98691688

most popular classless systems are like this soo last on i looked into was dragonbane same shit
>>
>>98691491
even gary gygax didnt like rolling 3D6 down the line and added ways to make it less random
this includes flat arrays that guaranteed a high and low stat with no randomization whatsoever
but also 4D6, drop the lowest, assign where needed which is only semi-random, since you can put your highest roll in your main stat
>>
>>98691699
Yet Shadowrun, another classless classic, doesn't do that.
That's one example for, one against (or 1:6, if you count each edition separately), not much of a statistic.
>>
>>98691665
Pre-planned characters tend to have similar motivations as well. Over time you notice players have repeating motivations and character traits. Its not a bad thing, but can be repetitive.
>>
>>98691491
Sometimes it's fun to just go with what the dice give and see what you can make of it. I usually prefer being able to start with a concept and make a character to fit it, but rolling can be a fun change of pace every now and then. I think rolled chargen works better for oneshots or short campaigns than longer ones, though, or at least I like it more in short campaigns.
>>
>>98691491
I'm struggling to think of a single classless system with randomised chargen except Traveller. Even Traveller has choices in Lifepath and then an alternative chargen method that's not randomised.
>>
>>98691491
This OP makes no sence. Which games you have in mind?
>>
>>98691491
>scrap your character idea
You're not supposed to have a character idea to scrap.
>>
>>98692100
this.
>>
>>98692012
FATAL. It's pretty much the only game that insist on random chargen.
>>
>>98691491
huh? I've never played a classless game that didn't use point buy. what are you talking about?
>>
>>98691560
rolling and point buy support either style equally (ie. not at all, they're entirely orthogonal and irrelevant to the sort of game you want to run)
>>
>>98691665
In my current point buy pirate game, the players are a muppet, a golem, and a ghost. Neither method encourages creativity more than the other. Just imagine shit.
>>
>>98691714
Speak for yourself.
>>
>>98691491
Rolling is for dungeon crawls where your character is a statblock and your only objective is to get loot. It ill suits an actual RPG.

>>98692394
Incorrect. Point Buy lets you create a curated character that matters. Rolling lets you create a statblock that is disposable.
>>
>>98692417
Incorrect. You can make disposable characters with point buy and you can make non disposable characters with rolling.
>>
>>98692417
Dungeon crawls are the only actual RPGs, sorry.
>>
>>98691491
>I really dont see how "rolling" for everything in the character creation (Expecially races) is fun when it just makes you scrap your character idea
Preventing "character idea" retardation is precisely the goal.

>most players then roleplay and play worse.
Theatre kid faggotry is not roleplaying, and roleplaying is not theatre kid faggotry.

Roleplaying = during a dungeon delve or wilderness exploration, play the role that you class is designed for: fighting for a Fighter, casting spells for a Magic-User, and so on. Nobody needs your "character ideas" when a character's role in an adventure is entirely defined by its class.
>>
>>98691708
>gary gygax used flat arrays that guaranteed a high and low stat with no randomization whatsoever
Bullshit, retard
>>
>>98692433
You don't play the role of your character though, the "character" is just a statblock. It's a game mechanic. There is no greater game world, there are no personalities, characters are just boring sets of modifiers and features.
>>
>>98692423
All characters are disposable.
>>
>>98691672
MAID is the worst possible example because you might as well reroll your character if any of your stats comes up as 1. At least a D&D character is still broadly usable with minimum allowed stats (ok so maybe not combat-related attributes)
>>
>>98692389
dragonbane and most ttrpgs have random roll same with warhammer
>>
>>98692721
That sounds boring and retarded.
>>
>>98691491
Counterpoint:
Rolling your entire character and bracing for the suck is the entire fun, especially since you will make three more that single game meeting.
Pic very fucking related, this game genuinely makes dying fun and playing essentially a schizophrenic character that's seven different people through the campaign is entertaining.
>>
>>98691491
Quick question: if you are playing game with literal chargen, why are you showing up with a character idea?
Your character is literally what comes out of the rolls. You play what comes out, not what you want to play. Entirely different thing conceptually.
My GM usually solves this by people trading their results if someone has something they really don't want and the other guys is ok with taking it or actively wants it.

>classless do it
They don't. Which proves you are at best DnDrone, and at worst never-game.
>>
>>98691491
>it just makes you scrap your character idea
You have it in the wrong order. You roll for the stats and then decide for your character based on the roll.

It doesn't but tryhard faggots have decided it's the one right way and if you don't do it you're having fun wrong.
>>
>>98692719
it was offered as an option, but 4D6, drop the lowest, in an array was gygaxs preferred option which was a very forgiving distribution that let you hedge low rolls by still letting you put your best roll in your needed attribute
>>
>>98691491
I dont know about classless systems, never played one with randomised chargen, But rolling for starting proffession in warhammer fantasy rpg or (dont judge me too hard) zweihander is cool mechanic. Starting off in the world as whatever gets thrown at you and then getting to decide your characters next steps from that point on makes for a feel thats closer to life.
>>
>>98692706
>roleplaying is not theatre kid faggotry
"Roleplay" is a theatre kid word to describe their theatre faggotry, and has been for longer than RPGs have existed.
>>98694306
If your game doesn't let you lose then it's not a game.

AD&D DMG page 11 under "Generation of Ability Scores"
>Method I
>All scores are recorded and arranged in the order the player desires. 4d6 are rolled, and the lowest die (or one of the lower) is discarded.
>Method II
>All scores are recorded and arranged as in Method I. 3d6 are rolled 12 times and the highest 6 scores are retained.
>Method III
>Scores rolled are according to each ability category, in order, STRENGTH, INTELLIGENCE, WISDOM, DEXTERITY, CONSTITUTION, CHARISMA. 3d6 are rolled 6 times for each ability, and the highest score in each category is retained for that category.
>Method IV
>3d6 are rolled sufficient times to generate the 6 ability scores, in order, for 12 characters. The player then selects the single set of scores which he or she finds most desirable and these scores are noted on the character record sheet.
4d6 drop the lowest is the default first method for character stat generation in AD&D, nogames. Actually pick up a book.

Why are you coming in with a detailed character concept if you don't even know what sort of game you're playing?
Your complaint isn't a system issue, this is just a matter of being a good player.
>>
>>98691491
Someone has never played FIST before (granted, you can choose your archetypes instead of rolling). It can be very fun, but it's silly in DnD clones.

Different mechanics work in different games. The same things that work in GURPS aren't the things that work in a d20 DnD clone which aren't the things that work in PbtA which aren't the things that work in LANCER etc.
>>
>>98701156

>>98691491
What the fuck is a character idea? Why are you starting the game with preconceptions? Roll your dice & see what happens, then the character will come to you on its own
>>
>>98693798
The thing is - if you roll the character and don't make a fucking scene about it like a fucking manchild, it takes few minutes at most?

>>
>>98691491
Well here's the rub;

Your character doesn't start off interesting.
No, a short novel worth of backstory nobody will read, does not change that.
Especially if you get shanked with a dirty knife and die of sepsis in session one.

What your character does during the game is what is interesting.

You also cannot guarantee that any given character will survive longer than it takes for you to do something fatally stupid.

Playing the same character over and over again is also acceptable.
But boring.

Randomly generated characters are a way to surprise yourself.
Did you expect expendable wizard apprentice number three to be the one who prevailed?
Probably not.
And you are essentially called upon to characterize him by his in-game actions, which creates ORGANIC character growth, that everybody at the table is there for and can be invested in.
And that's what makes him more interesting than -your fursona- for the fifteenth time.

Tldr; randomly generated characters that beat the odds of the meatginder, are cooler by far than your masturbatory self-insert/waifu.

Why do people who have never played an RPG before, but ESPECIALLY not during it's golden era (90s to ~00s) think they have a better idea of what "roleplaying games" are really about then people who did? Is it due to politically obsessed retardation?
>>
>>98706220
Slight exaggeration but you have a 33% chance to succeed at the most basic skill roll in MAID with an attribute level of 1. If we assume the equivalent is DC 5 then the D&D character has superior odds even with a -5. If we assume a 6 in MAID is roughly DC 10 in D&D, the maid still has worse odds to beat the target number

I feel like random traits and lifepath chargen can be fun, but I think adding elements of choice back in can help safeguard against dud charactes.
For instance, if some system says to roll 3 random character quirks, I feel like it'd be better to roll 5 then pick 3 that might gel together.
Some lifepath rules do similar, where the event in your backstory is rolled, but the character effect has options a player can pick.

Nah. DM's are cucks who work free for my entertainment, they are by their very mature pushovers that are fundamentally incapable of setting boundaries. In this case I'd simply proceed to roll my character using this method. Even if he actually got his big boy pants on that day and pushed back I would effortlessly win that little play. Ultimately the only way I won't get to choose the method to roll my stats is for him to throw me out, and that would alienate him with every other player. So he'll let it slide, like he does every single time in his life when someone challenges him in the slightest. He knows he's a monkey who dances for me and he does it anyway.
