>>98700288>TQ: What time period in Magic was the golden era of Commander specifically for you? Why?That beautiful time in 2024 where UB wasn't 50% of sets
>>98700288The most fun I've had with the format was when the original batch of precons was released. People were just playing them unmodified against each other for weeks at my lgs and it was a good time because all the decks sucked balls and there was a lot of back and forth. I miss my authentic three hour long commander games.

>>98700288>TQI think I enjoyed the PLAY of Magic pre-COVID, particularly during my college years. But I don't have much fondness for the blocks themselves (INN, RTR, Theros, KTK). More that, when you're a broke college student surrounded by other broke college students, you have infinite time to play EDH. Games lasted long, CEDH didn't exist, and the format still very much felt like the "junk rare" experience at local game stores. That being said I think I've enjoyed modern Commander much more. Not the slop sets, nor the rapid-fire release cadence. Magic itself is a fucking train wreck. More the fact that EDH has moved away from decks being absolute piles and become much more about "brewing" as the card pool has broadened into a card ocean. Also post decks. Your most recent one, to be exact.
Does this instantly become Top 1 CEDH commander
>>98700467You can just ask people to play a different format instead of coming up with whatever this is.
>TQBRO through LCI, since that's when I got back into magic and commander.
>Birds of Paradise printed in the new foundations mono green preconfinally its gonna get cheaper.
>>98700624It was JUST reprinted in marvel and it didn't help the cost that much. Don't know if this will help all that much either.
>>98700467Yes because we still have the terrible EDH banlist but now you're running ~55 fewer names than a normal EDH deck. You're now the most consistent deck in the format by a country mile playing some abomination of Vintage shops with 4 copies of cards that are normally 1-ofs in Shops.
>>98700343Same bro, I started with the second phase of decks, I was running Derevi. Bastard of a card
Thirty (30) starting life is objectively superior to fourty (40)
>>98700467Timmy so desperately wishes that the commander players would play his larp legacy format with him.
>>98700467is there a Formatshitter variant that gives you three free mulls and a free tutor at the beginning of the game if you lost the previous game?
>>98700873It lets you free mulligan as long as you promise your deck is casual.
I’ve literally never posted on this board before but I have a serious question as a casual player who only really plays magic with friends but I’ve seen a lot of people shit on Commander and say it’s ruined standard. I thought commander was the most popular format? I don’t mind standard but I don’t like how limited in variety you are in it. You’re basically playing a deck with like 10 cards you have multiple copies of. Sounds kind of boring when you consider EDH forces you to have only one of each. Is it elitism or is there merit to it?
>>98700921Bait.
>>98700962No I’m serious
>>98700919perfect, I'll play it
>>98699133>edhrec said so so it must be trueincorrect, blas act + repurcussion is b2 legal
>>98700726kobe is correct
>>98700921One could argue that ever since edh became the leading mtg format the design/balance team has been kind of pushed to make cards that are simply more efficient because there is now an expectation that a card has to be powerful enough to enable a strategy capable of killing three people instead of one, which makes modern magic cards feel very lopsided and swingy in 60 card constructed formats. On the other hand, you could also compare the standard bans from pre 2017 to the mountain of bans that came after and conclude that they maybe fired all their competent designers or there is simply not enough time for playtesting now that they roll out a new set every two months. I myself highly suspect that everyone at wizards being terrible at their jobs is the true cause of standard being a shit format.
>>98701004>opponent plays a mana dork, a creature that makes a token on enter, and his commander>other players do similar lines>turn 5>I play repercussion + blas act without any ramp>I winheh, sorry chuds, maybe next time don't play creatures in the Timmy creature bracket?
>>98700921Eh, it's still the most fun format to me but the problem is that it has gotten super optimized in a lot of circles to where you can't durdle nearly as much as the "play your big ass card" format was designed for initially so instead of big fuck off 8 cost guys you're getting smacked by a cmc 3 or less commander turn 2
>>98700921There are so many redundant cards that make your 100 cards deck basically the same thing as standard where you have 4 copies of each card anyway. If you want card diversity and fun, you need to just play at bracket 2 where people are playing precons or jank piles for fun. The more "powerful" you go up in commander in power, the more everyone is still running the same cards, card effects. and win cons and its really no different than 60 card competitive.
>>98701022>isn't infinite damage>isn't a guaranteed win like thoracle>relies on your opponents all playing creatures (some b2 decks *gasp* don't)>edhrec retards even confuse dualcaster+twinflame combo as 2-card when it requires another creature so it's actually 3-cardsorry fren, bracket discussion is all about knowing your outs, maybe next time never leave your rule 0 bubble?

these are some guys from my lgs (names have been changed), rate how unbearable they sound from the least to the most>me: always plays monoblack because he has the most fun with it, avoids using mechanics that would lead to lengthy turns, ok with everything except cedh>tyler: got into magic with ff ub, his decks are mostly made of ub stuff, chill guy he just likes to play characters he likes in form of cardboard>karl: he has rules knowledge comparable to a judge and he is a honest fellow, tends to play convoluted johnny decks that take long turns although he explains every move he does>jones: hilarious yet jittery, tends to make misplays and asking takebacks, sometimes he gets pissy if not allowed to takeback>micky: always plays decks that revolve around infinite combos, if too many of the combo pieces gets exiled or discarded he usually scoops regardless of his boardstate

>>98701267he looks like Minwu, cool
Quentin, this combo was super gay and super retarded and I’m gonna abuse the fuck out of this combo as much as I possibly can.
>>98701278Gilgamesh would be strange to helm it because he's an active character in the campaign. Definitely in the 99 though. Cloud, while definitely one of the strongest options, is a little too good if that makes sense. Firion is a great idea though. I'd totally forgot he exists. Definitely a fantastic consideration.>>98701313If he wasn't explicitly a Mystic Knight in lore I'd 100% use Minwu for resemblance alone.
>>98701317daring today, are we
>>98701317see, it's for things like these that I always run some Duress or Extract effects
>>98701317If you're going to be an asshole, be an ACTUAL asshole.
>>98701267The one and only fashion model lady. Tape some swords to her and give her double strike to instagib people.
>>98701326I know you already shot down Cloud but there are 3 different mythic Cloud commanders in W, RW and RGW, and all 3 of them are designed to work with the Buster Sword which is so similar to the swords of X&Y that all 3 of them work together too.Syr Gwyn gives you a more accurate creature type line for a Mystic Knight (imo) and lets you spread the swords around in a knight tribal deck instead of going Voltron. idk which fits the boss's lore / personality better. Gil could still go in the list since Gwyn has Rwild card pick, Kellan the Fae Blooded gives you a tutor for a sword in the CZ and rewards you for going wide and suiting him up. (just ignore that Faerie type, it probably won't come up...)
>>98701361needs haste too
Did you guys see the Foundations precon lists? They're actually really stacked for 30 bucks and come with new fullarts for the commanders, i think i'll get the dragon one.
>>98701398I’ve already preordered the zombie and angel ones for $40 each. Thinking of getting the green one too so I can rework it into a funny Loot deck. I think it would be hilarious if I optimised it to the point it was cEDH tier.
>>98701361>>98701391These are both really good options as well. Syr Gwyn was definitely the first thought that came to mind but ultimately decided against it since I do want to go voltron/the six mana is a a hefty price. , Lighting and Cloud, Planet's Champion is a good fit too and Kellan is a really neat pick. I'll definitely consider them and if I end up in those colors. I think I'm sold on Firion though. He's very unique, will keep the power level a little lower for the casuals at my pod, and lets me go all in on the equipment theme. Do I shit my pants and explode if someone casts vandalblast? Absolutely. But it's probably fine. I can always throw him in the 99 of one of the other options if it doesn't work out.
>>98701398I am rather surprised, since I figured they'd be closer to the Starter commander decks that had a lot of cheap cards. These seem really worthwhile provided it's possible to find them near MSRP.
>>98701398black and green lists have the best value imo?
>>98701439Maybe yah, red has some kinda big cards like utvara hellkite tho and i could use it as a solid base to finally build the Rivaz deck i've always wanted
>>98701439Those are the best, but the others aren't far behind. Blue also has a couple of $10+ cards, and White/Red each have a handful of decently pricey angels/dragons.
>>98701267Ekthi so all your swords come in the form of 3/3 creaturesKellan the fae blooded or mono w cloud to search for your fav sword and have it trigger twice
>>98701398yeah, I preordered the black oneI got lucky, I was just thinking "I'd like to build a zombie deck" and there it is
>>98701393This card is big news for any red 3 drop commander that wants to hit the board and start getting busy right away. Curves straight into them.

>Thread question2016 thru 2018 represents a special era for Commander for me. I had just started playing Magic, it was my first TCG now that I was an adult with money, and I bought almost every precon from that era. I would buy a set of precons and we would play "precon battle royales". I had a pod of friends that played with me in my Mom's basement, (where I was living at the time). This was before buddy moved away, and before other-buddy became a vocal /pol/-chud. I was still learning the rules and all the backlog of cards at this time, so things were shiny and new. I only played Commander once a week, so I supplemented my play with the then recent Magic Duels videogame client. Good times.
How to get good spacing from cardconjurer.app
>>98703144Do you still play any commanders from that period or have you dropped all of them?
>>98703186Around 2024 I was moving, and I took that opportunity to downsize/liquidate my collection, and for a split second I thought I was 'quitting Magic', so I parted with a lot of stuff indiscriminately. The only two decks I still from that era are 'Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis', and Lord Windgrace (neither of which I play often). I don't even have sore feelings about it, because physically my collection was too large and filled with too much chaff, and being able to start fresh playing more recent Commanders / decks was quite pleasant.

Give me your favorite sauce. For the first time in a good while there's no commander currently on the horizon that I really want to build. I did trade for a Roaming Throne recently so maybe I'll factor that into my next deck but nothing's sticking out atm.If I wanted to be super lazy I'd do Ur-Sphinx as an excuse to play my beloved Sphinx Ambassador. But I fear he's randomly going to be a $30 card.
>>98703605I wouldn't mind being pointed in the direction of a commander or strategy that requires some effort on the player's part either. Probably my favorite deck from this year turned out to be Errant & Giada flash/control, and obviously the deck builds itself in-part. But finding the little synergies. Realizing how oppressive Appa can get with a board full of flash creatures. It felt really good finding the right cards and assembling those board states, even if I had to disassemble it because players were getting less and less enthused.
>>98703605>Roaming ThroneThat's a cool Artifact
>>98703623It's a little slop in that it's a ubiquitous tribal staple, but the guy wanted a Coffers and Thrasios from my trade binder so I didn't really see any other option. But it is simply a card you can jam in the vast majority of tribal decks. Or even decks where your commander's trigger is in need of doubling.
Maybe Wilson bear tribal is finally on the menu. Which would you build him with? Folk Hero or Haunted One? Folk Hero gives some free card advantage just for playing your strategy, but Haunted One is immensely powerful when it's online. Especially when Wilson is such an immediately aggressive commander. The vigilance makes him a little bit clunky, but it also works in your favor. It lets you save your combat tricks for after blockers are declared (there are plenty of lands that tap creatures, artifacts too, not to mention Earthcraft)

So I've built a few decks on my own now, and I'm kinda annoyed that I'm constantly falling into the same routine despite having various colors and archetypes. It seems you ALWAYS want to have as much draw as possible, as well as fetches/shocks whenever possible.

You need to be including robust packages for this. It makes your deck more consistent, and a more consistent deck immediately plays better regardless of how janky it would otherwise be

If I was just going to win with Aetherflux what would even be the point of making Lotuses?
>>98704171Card draw is broad enough that you can usually tailor your package to the theme. No winning on the lands, though. But leaving out shocks/fetches is great way to "power down" a deck without sacrificing the fun parts.
>>98704242It's actually the worst possible way to power down a deck. If your strategy is strong but your manabase is ass, you're just going to have swingier games.

>>98704273Yes, but that's not going to change the nature of the strategy you are running. If it's genuinely oppressive slowing it down with shit lands isn't going to make it feel any less oppressive when it does its thing. It's like running an early two-card combo without tutors. You can say "well I don't have tutors for the cards, so it's fine." But it's gonna suck ass those games you randomly luck into it.
>>98704229I was afraid of that, Aggravated Assault and Karlarch or however that bg3 chick's name is spelled are kinda expensive. Guess i can proxy but still
>>98704295https://scryfall.com/search?q=otag%3Aextra-combat-phase+f%3AEDH+id%3Arakdos&unique=cards&as=grid&order=nameYou don't need either of those cards. In fact Aggravated Assault is bad outside boring combo.

>>98704309yeah but then you have to run Full Throttle
>>98704263Seconding >>98704264Some $5 reprints. Okay builds, just extremely simplistic and almost seemingly designed for children.I dunno man, I got into Commander during covid and I would not have been happy to spend money on a precon or even just build a deck myself that was as boring as these. I wanted to find something that excited me and build around that. I really don't know why all Magic starter products treat people like they're 90 IQ and need the most simplistic mechanics delivered to them. Draft really should be the entry point for the game, and even where it's not I feel like after 3 or 4 games most people have got it enough that they can play something with more going on- not even "complex" but literally just more than the bare minimum of mechanics this game has to offer
>>98704283>It's like running an early two-card combo without tutors.limiting early infinites/altwincons to certain turns is the backbone of what brackets are, doesn't matter if the combo is 5 pieces or 3 or your commander is a 1 card combo
>>98704350>i don't know why mtg starter products are very simplistic and made for 90 iq people>i really don't get itlooks like you're not high iq yourself

>>98704350>Magic starter products treat people like they're 90 IQ and need the most simplistic mechanics delivered to them.because they want you to upgrade them>Draft really should be the entry point for the game20 bucks to get your ass smashed because you thought that 5 mana legendary was cool and don't know what a good 2 drop looks like.
>>98704525>>Magic starter products treat people like they're 90 IQ and need the most simplistic mechanics delivered to them.>because they want you to upgrade themNormal precons are meant to be upgraded (especially the fucking lands, jesus) and they aren't built to be simplistic. These precons are because they're Foundations products. It is because they are for new players and not because they are meant to be upgraded.>>Draft really should be the entry point for the game>20 bucks to get your ass smashed because you thought that 5 mana legendary was cool and don't know what a good 2 drop looks like. This comment is funny because I genuinely don't know whether you're trying to describe the Draft experience of a new player, or the experience of playing one of these precons I learned Magic through Draft. Sit near the lanky autist who knows every card ever printed that every LGS has, and ask him for as little or as much help as you want. He's nice and will be more than happy to explain BREAD picks during the selection phase, and then help you build the best deck you can with your picks if you ask.I dunno man maybe you're 90 IQ and that's why you struggled at Draft and now think these Foundations products are just underpowered instead of being unexciting
>>98704350>"Why doesn't wotc specifically cater to my personal experience of learning the game which is clearly the right way?"Bruh, the core rules of this game is for ages 12 and up; it's not meant to be difficult to pick up. You just got hauled into it in your 30's making you susceptible to the deeper rules and aspects.
>>98704273>swapping your fetches and shocks for mostly taplands and basics is going to slow you way down Not really if you understand how to look at your pips and curve.
>>98704476>why aren't all precons hearthull level?!your projection is showing your 90 iq level actually

People who make fun of card games will say this same "it's for children!!!!!" shit to delegitimize your hobby.>it's not meant to be difficult to pick upAnd it isn't, and even children are perfectly capable of playing Magic out the box at a higher level than WotC's design team seems to think so>You just got hauled into it in your 30's making you susceptible to the deeper rules and aspects. The funny thing is I actually got into card games through Yugioh as a child, and that 2010s era when I played was more complex than Magic generally. The only complexity in Magic mechanically is keyword bloat and the extremes of rules autism like layers. Aside from that it's just about thinking ahead and knowing when to spend resources

I don't know if you can tell from this image, but my double sleeved card looks a little bent and it's making me worried. Is it supposed to be like that? I have a 67mmx92mm art sleeve on the inside and a clear matte outer sleeve. Are there specific outer sleeves for that size?
>>98704476nta so I'll drop my take but I'm not getting involved in the rest of this argument between two retards. The average MtG player is dumb, extremely dumb. We're talking "couldn't understand shroud as a mechanic" dumb. We're talking "draw no longer targets because they would click their opponent on MTGO" dumb.Look at the Lathliss precon for example. The card advantage is absolutely horrendous and it's easily fixed with just more wheels and impulse draw, even accounting for reprint equity. The problem is that the average player is dumber than a bag of rocks and can't figure out how to access more of their deck, or that this might even be something important. "Exile the top two cards of my library? What if I hit my 8-drop and can't cast it? Better wait 5 turns to see if I hard draw a land." It's very hard to argue "don't pander to retards" when retards have historically been the majority of your consumers and it costs very little effort to not have Timmy's first deck be a choice between Gitrog and Storm, saving those cards for the much more lucrative boosters that you can entice players with once they've figured out the toddler decks you started them with.I mean hell, look at the average Commander player right now. You get people asking "are there any cards that are the exact same thing as Vandalblast?" when they want a sweeper that unconditionally and exclusively clears their opponent's board. Then against all odds you show them Anzrag's Rampage and they go "oh but it exiles some cards from my library so I don't want Vandalblast + Sneak Attack on one card :((("That's the average person WotC has to design product for. The dumbest fucking person you ever knew that's unironically asking why every boardwipe isn't Cyclonic Rift that exiles for the manacost of Blasphemous Act.

>>98700921Commander is the most popular format for various reasons yesAnd yes the increased focus on EDH has caused other formats to suffer with cards printed with it in mind. This occurs not only in the case of standard-legal cards being designed primarily to be appealing to EDH players (see: Vivi, Badgermole Cub), but also with cards that were printed in "Commander-only" product but are still legal in Legacy and Vintage due to the way those formats work. Picrel is an example, Mono-W initiative is an entire deck in Vintage despite the entire initiative mechanic being designed for and only printed in a Commander set.

Though my autistic ass thinks it would be kind of cool thematically if he was grixis and she was like naya so they could never really "touch" in a deck dedicated with either as a commander and would have to be put under a 5 color commander like professor x or something to actually fight together, just as a nod to how their relationship started
>>98705757You're still a tard for buying this at 20. If you're already at 6 mana you should be looking at doing something other than making more mana. Finale into wincon boredom and the memes I mentioned above are the only reason to play it.

Some cards just attain that price by being the only card that does that particular thing. Bloodthirsty Conqueror is a good example. Ostensibly a 5 mana flier with one half an infinite combo shouldn't be $35, and yet it is because that side of the combo has only ever been printed like twice. The other side has been printed dozens of times and only comes to about $8, even when they printed it on a creature that automatically comes back when it dies
If "Creature is bad if it doent have ETB/ Haste/ Hexproof/ Ward/ Indestructible" cause is "Do nothing" or "Dies to removal".Why than not make more permanents with Exit The Battle Field abilities?

>>98706828wrong thread retard
>>98706831Ok, Let me raphrase. YOU COMBO REQUIRES MORE FANTASY XMAS THAN ME. Retard.
>>98706835>YOU COMBO REQUIRES MORE FANTASY XMAS THAN ME~!!!ofc, because he's popping off t2 instead of t3retard
>>98706732Anon why the fuck would you grab the cast trigger Ugin on a tutor that farts the PW directly onto the battlefield without casting it
>>98706802It's a flicker deck, with something like Felidar Guardian out you can have ininfite ETBs, tokens and exile effects
>>98706848Tutor your favorite PW.
>>98706738>cedh deck that runs every rock and dork it can with mana dump in the cz = 42 lands casual deck
>>98706864>42+ lands in cedh? impossible mana flood is baaaadyou're so dumb
>>98706869Goalpost got wheels on it
>>98706875still waiting on that oops all spells edh deck retard-kun
>>98706738>surely bypassing mana isn't broken at allI don't know what the fuck you think you're replying to.I'm not saying you don't need fucking lands, I'm saying 42 (which is the fucking number Trinket Tard recommended in the fucking video the image was describing) is wildly excessive and as a fundamental matter of game mechanics you can draw until you find lands if you don't have lands in hand but you can't draw anything if all you have in hand is lands and you're not finding spells>until then i'll be doing nothing but generating massive amounts of manaYou have not understood what being mana flooded means and for some reason you think it means having a lot of mana in (what used to be) your mana pool.It fucking isn't. It's very specifically the inverse of being mana screwed, which is the state of being behind on lands and not drawing more or not drawing lands in the colors you need
>>98706828Yeah I'm not particularly impressed by a 5-mana Transmute combo just because you managed to make a Tron payoff come out on turn 3.
>>98706879you what 42 lands convert into in 60 card land? 26.and did you know? *gasp* control decks in 60 card land actually had 26 lands! and they worked! and sometimes they win tournaments!>but muh cantrips...you are an idiot. just like whoever else agrees with you
