How close is the retrofuturism of cyberpunk 2020 to Inner Sphere level of civilian tech in 3050s? I'm GMing the RPG and sometimes have issues finding small scale stuff lore like civilian telephones, internet, transport etc and thought I could borrow some things from the other game.

Depends on the planet and era. Core Innersphere planets are cyberpunky. Periphery planets are often early 20th century levels.
>>
>>98701355
Some planets will have a local internet. Personal computing is pretty much 80s cyberpunk style, but non-medical cybernetics are much rarer. They're reserved almost exclusively for black ops spooks and elite edgerunner types in most of the IS. Canopus and some other entertainment hubs have "recreational" cybernetics, but only in the sense of using cybernetics to enhance performers. Regular people can't afford it and depending on where you are don't like the idea of cybernetics in the first place.
Many worlds have their logistics so fucked that their availabilities are all over the place. The guy riding a donkey to his corporate office job comes to mind. Very core worlds will have a wide variety of consumer goods, but the further away you go, the more likely it is they'll be using chunky low-grade stuff designed to last as long as possible. Civilian technology followed the same trend as military. In the star league a neurohelmet can give you enough high-fidelity feedback to interpret sensor data and "see" things in the back of your head. The downgraded succession war model uses a viewscreen at the edge of your eyeline to convey what's going on behind you and is heavy and sturdy enough to beat a man to death without risking any functionality. Consumer goods follow similar trends.
>>
>>98701268
I mean if you drop stuff like Netrunning then it's not too far off. Even advanced cybernetics are a thing, just heavily regulated and instead of cyberphosis you need regular maintenance and drug cocktails to deal with replacing so much of your body with artificial implants.
Battletech is very low-key advanced because it's not really in your face about it outside of military hardware.
One example off the top of my head is how gene locked messaging to confirm the sender and the recipient is just the norm in even 3025 BT.

Maurader is stupidly overgunned and under armored and undersinked.
>>
>>98701876
Ultras are, because caseless ammo iirc.
But it depends.

I am pretty sure the federated autocannons are rifled because they do the "bigger bullet, slower rof' thing, whilst the Kali Yama ac20 on the hunchback is probably smoothbore by necessity, of being a BRRRRRRRRRRRRT machine.

Modern tank guns i think all went back to being smoothbore for their sabots and shit, and then back to smoothbore if they want to launch munitions through the barrel, because modern guns are of the 'one shot, one kill' variety, so accuracy matters more than shooting a buttload of rounds simultaneously.

Iirc the only reason anyone even used smoothbore after rifling became a thing is for guns where they're gonna be shooting the cannon a LOT. Fouling and heat etc just destroys any rifling anyway.

Hell, even the .223 /5.56 service rifles most militaries use will shoot out their rifling before the gun itself packs it in, because you can change trigger packs this, springs that. But the barrel, even them drop forged heavy blah blah blah ones, nope, the rifling don't last very long.
All because you're putting so many rounds through it.

So... maybe?
>>
>>98701876
No. Battletech autocannons are schizophrenic as fuck, with some being single shot, burst fire, auto fire, smoothbore apfsds throwers, rifled APHE throwers, HEAT throwers, APS throwers, even 2 types of "AC5" can be ridiculously different which makes me wonder how many quartermasters in BT don't suck start a pistol after a year.

Imparting spin on sabot rounds just fucks them up something awful. IIRC it has something to do with the sabot separation from the actual dart. You can put sabot out of a rifled gun, but you need this fancy fucking gyroscopic stabilizer to counter the spin. About the only people using rifled guns are the Brits on the Challenger 2, because the Chally's intended role is seal-clubbing the shit out of mid-Cold War Soviet surplus, and you don't need sabot for that.

>>98701800
That was kinda the idea with it. I didn't slap any lore in the description but the original idea for this mech in universe was that it was built as a trainer mech for fullsize Marauders. It wasnt until units that received the trainers started immediately trying to field them as actual combat line mechs did the manufacturer pivot and turn it into more a combat mech, thus the over armoring
>>98702013
Maybe, I have a 1T variant that has a standard fusion engine and light PPCs, and a 2S variant that mounts a clan UAC/10, but I havent played with changing the armor values yet. I think the next variant I come up with will try to increase the speed of the mech and take away armor to mount jump jets or more weapons idk. I'm open to ideas

Also note that while ideally it would be cool for me to commission art for the Outlaw to make it more unique, for all intents and purposes you could easily just take a standard Marauder mini and use that to represent the Outlaw on tabletop

So with the ComStar Battle Level II no longer being produced, /mydudes/ are 4 'mechs shy of a complete battalion MTOE. I need suggestions for replacement 'mechs for the following chassis: Lancelot, Crockett, Mongoose, and Crab. Anything PRIOR to IlClan era designs are fair game; 'mech roles need to be the same as the four or my formations won't work in Alpha Strike games, so I need a Scout, 2 Skirmishers, and a Sniper to fill the gaps. Any thoughts?
>>
>>98702669
Literally any 'Mechs? Give us some criteria.

Or...

Scout = Scarabus; the one with TMS
Skirmisher 1 = Nightsky
Skirmisher 2 = Maelstrom
Sniper = Nightstar
>>
>>98702683
Criteria is pretty loose. I'm after substitutes for a Lancelot in a Battle lance, a Crockett in a Fire lance, a Crab in a Striker lance, and a Mongoose in a Recon lance. As long as the roles/tonnage/speed formation prereqs aren't being violated, I'll take any ideas. IS non-omni models only, I guess that matters too.

>Legit cheaper buying a full sized Marauder
I know C-Bills is a retarded metric but you are now competing with the MAD-2R and 2T in Republic era. Hell the MAD-6L will match the speed of this mech and be far more capable.

Still like it though.
>>
>>98702873
XL engines are 4x the price of Standard. The MAD-2s are the budget options of the era.
>>
>>98702906
If it had ES instead of FF, the Marauder would be another example of how the Royals got it right the first time.
>>
>>98702873
That's a concern. The 1T variant does come out cheaper than a true MAD though by a metric of~2 million C-bills, so for it's original use case it does make more sense. The OUT-2T's XL engine ups the cost dramatically but also enables much greater combat capability. You gotta remember though that an unseen in gameplay benefit is the design is the logistical advantage of it being a much lighter mech than a true MAD, making it theoretically easier to move from place to place via shipping. To a degree you are paying for that

This is also technically a late dark age design in terms of when it comes out, so the cost is a bit more of a wash in an era where almost every mech is sporting some kind of pricey internals

>The man wants two stars for 8000BV
You're going to need a lot more shitty lights or some protomechs to pull that off buddy.
You can make ONE star at 8000BV as a clanner, don't forget that all of your pilots need to be set to skill 3/4 making everything even more expensive.

Even the shittiest and cheapest Bane (The one that has nothing but 10 UAC2s and 4 machines guns with only 4 tons of ammo) will set you back 2564BV once there's a clanner behind the wheel. (But is also the only assault mech you can afford at 8k)

for 8000BV you're looking at a single star of mediums and lights, with maybe a heavy/assault for your commander.

So toss the dire wolf and timber wolf onto the shelf for starters since they're both prohibitively expensive if you only have 8k BV

Use the masterunit list to do the skill calculation for you and set everyone to 3/4, then upgrade/downgrade variants until you hit 8k

You can bring a Nova, Hunchback IIC, adder, Howler and Fire Falcon if you bring them in cheap configurations, but if you wanna experiment with the fire moths speed feel free to swap the howler out.

You might consider bringing the Summoner as a middle of the road heavy omni and then bringing 4 shit buckets along to afford it, since even the cheapest summoner A will set you back nearly 2.8K BV, while the Grizzly will set you back 2.9K BV (Being sturdier, but slower and therefor having a harder time keeping up with your lights/mediums)

The rifleman IIC is a friend destroyer in its base configuration, 4 large pulse lasers with a skill 3/4 pilot will put some work in.
But it is over slightly over 3k BV, so your 4 other shit buckets will be close to worthless initiative sinks.

The Rifleman IIC 2 is another armor block you can consider at just 1.8BV, but it is only armed with 4 UAC2s and six tons of ammo.
>>
File: 400PV remants binary.jpg (398 KB, 777x1447)
398 KB JPG
Speaking of list building, I have been wracking my brain on a 400PV binary for a Ilclan era campaign as the Jade Falcon Remnants striking back at the Alyina Mercantile League for what their hired mercenaries did in Scouring sands.
(Basically going to be a hardmode rerun of the campaign, since I have to pay upfront for everyone to be skill 3 and I wont be getting any of the special edge abilities and I don't get 4-6 named pilots that improve and make my force stronger as I progress without paying upfront PV for shoving them in a mech.)
We certainly wont be meeting with the locals like the mercenaries did, so it's either Sortie 02 of establishing a base or Sortie 03 striking their outpost.

Apolakkia shall be reclaimed from the merchant traitors!
To further spice things up, I will be replacing a lot of their forces with skill 4 mercenaries instead of the listed armies, making them far more potent since the campaign lists are usually quite awful.
>>
>>98703099
>This is also technically a late dark age design in terms of when it comes out, so the cost is a bit more of a wash in an era where almost every mech is sporting some kind of pricey internals
Think this is probably hitting the nail on the head as that is the problem with Dark Age. Everything has got some advanced tech going for it so it is super hard to come up with something unique that can justify its existence, a problem that anons are currently experiencing in the mech design thread.

I know it is a bit pedantic but I look at the Outlaw anon made and for the era it is in my first reaction is "Cool, I can have an Omnimech for the same price that can do something similar, in fact I can have two!" Hence why I feel designing a Dark Age mech is actually a really hard task. There is so much available cause nothing goes extinct and in fact extinct mechs are getting put back into production that anything new has massive competition.

>>
>>98703412
I am Outlawanon, and I suppose I agree with you if you view everything simply in terms of C-bills cost. The problem with your point is that it's not always realistic and there are many other factors at play. For example yes the OUT-2T is expensive for what it is, but the mech feels and controls the same as a standard Marauder and utilizes some parts compatibility with the Marauder making it easier to service and repair(my apologies for not noting this earlier when I dropped the data sheet, I went in raw). It's also a Taurian design by origin, so availability is also something it has going for it. What I mean by this is that yes, you could theoretically get an omni mech from somewhere else, but can you actually reasonably get it? What about parts? How easy is it to actually repair? How easy is it to operate? How easy is it to call up the manufacturer or find an experienced tech who can work on the mech? This says nothing towards state interests, such as the Taurians in this instance theoretically preferring a domestic design over a foreign one. Gameplay wise I agree, but there is more to things than just gameplay in lore, and in universe the late dark age has plenty of random virtually redundant mechs popping up out of small shops all over the IS. In this case this one, on a meta level, is for the Marauder fans

That's a fair point though anon, that designing stuff for the dark age is hard due to the prevalence of upgraded older designs. Another anon described my idea as a "55 ton crab" which isn't entirely wrong I reckon
>>
What Word of Blake 'mechs are setup with an ability to flip their guns to shoot behind them like the Rifleman can?
>>
>>98703907

>>
>>98703987
Yeah, and I'm wondering if there's any Word of Blake exclusives that are setup that way. MUL can filter by faction but not arms setup and MegaMekLabs can filter by arms setup but not faction, so each end up with searches with hundreds of entries. Figured it'd be easier to ask here before going all in on that sorta dive.
>>
>>98704414
Hell, the new MUL has record sheets. The key component is lower arm actuators, so you can also usually tell by skimming art: anything without an elbow joint is probably a match.

Filtering down Mekbay shows 40 mechs that are Faction: WoB positive, Faction: everyone else negative, and Feature: Reversible Arms positive.
We got Archangels, Devas, Dragon Fires, Fafnirs, Galahads, etc.

Unless you count the Wars of Reaving? That RAT opens some Clans up to significant mockery. Mainly Bears.

Mocking the Bores should be as ubiquitous an event as Canopian catgirl gooning.

IWM mechs project to be $75 each in 2 years. Just give up and switch to plastic. Boomer metals aren't good minis anyway.

>Just give up and switch to plastic
>CGL just stopped making a plastic Crockett
Just cannot win with these fiends.
>>

Worldwide massive tin price jump.
>>
>>98705547
Those RATs are stupid, though. They don't divide between Front Line and Second Line, they just say "BattleMechs", with a combo of Omni, regular, and IS Royal 'Mechs.

Super lazy on CGL's part. Shocker
>>
There needs to be a new clan formed in the IS that is dinosaur themed. It doesn't need to make much sense, but they should be absolute bastards and hyper aggressive. I don't fucking care, make their origins be a mercenary groups who began larping to hard as clanners, then have them end up being instrumental in the inevitable downfall of Clan Wolf. It would be cool as fuck. Make them Clan Carnotaurus Rex or something idk

Clan Ivory Velociraptor.
>>
>>98705693
You need to go back to 40K with that nonsense

Literally the Sphinx Raptor

Ivory Raptor sounds better.

When even Nicky says hol'up

>>98705768
They're still filthy clanner scum so it has to sound retarded. The edgelord-ier the better
>>
>>98705815
Do you think the word "coyote" is edgelord tier?

What do you mean they stopped? it's like my 2nd favorite mech
>>
>>98705838
They've taken a few of tbe old force packs from the Clan Invasion kickstarter out of production. Word is they're getting their molds redone and shuffled into new configurations so they'll be with different lancemates.

It makes sense. Plastic injection molds wear out over time. Same reason LEGO only keeps certain pieces in production for a few years.
>>
>>98705829
It's boring tier.

I'm sure it will be back eventually, but right now none are being produced since that Comstar pack got discontinued

Do gyrojet rifles shoot rocket propelled slugs or are they loaded with explosives along with the propellant?
>>
>>98706569
Explosive, though IIRC the IRL ones were slugs.
>>
>>98705815
Point was that it doesn't roll off the tongue well. Ivory Raptor is already five syllables, Ivory Velociraptor is eight syllables. After all all the names are just shit like Cloud Cobra or Jade Falcon, not Cloud King Cobra or Jade Peregrine Falcon.
>>
>>98706637
6 syllables seems to be the max one can get away with.
>>
>>98706629
Thanks
>>
>>98706629
Funny thing, while gyrojets theoretically have longer maximum ranges without a loss of power, they also have a minimum effective range, unlike regular bullets, since it takes them a few seconds to get up to speed, meaning they act a lot like many other BattleTech weapons.

Also interesting to note that Bolters in 40k are a hybrid of a gyrojet and a conventional bullet in order to overcome this limitation. They're fired from a conventional cartridge so they'll have lethal velocity right out of the barrel, then kick in the rocket motor shortly after.
>>
>>98706825
The rocket motor probably kicks in immediately for maximum effect since a lot of bolt weapons have extremely short barrels (if they have a barrel at all).

Depending on the artist, Ice Hellions might be alien velociraltors, although they're also depicted as griffins by way of those weird Chinese lion statues.
>>
>>98706856
Stop discussing this. The Sphinx Raptor is obviously the one.
>>
>>98706856
>those weird Chinese lion statues.
Those are Fuu dogs, you pestilential Fedrat
>>
>>98705899
Why does it look so tiny here? It's especially annoying because the Gladiator actually looks really good.
>>
>>98706863
Fwiw, I think they're supposed to be related.
>>
>>98706867
Poor perspective
>>
>>98706867
White was probably using the real miniatures for reference. Scale was all over the place back in the day and the more detailed stuff from the early 2000s especially was usually bigger than the ones that came out in the 80s and 90s, regardless of weight class.
