I'm fairly new, I have a question, besides the type (base vs contrast vs washes etc) do specific color variants matter? Can you technically just get something like this and just mix and get decent results when it comes to base colors? Then just get some washes/shades and metallics that you need depending on what you're painting?

fine, what do you like about YOUR homebrew faction/subfaction?
>>
>>98703571
>do specific color variants matter?
Not really, no. Vallejo's Game and Model ranges for example aren't different types of paint, it's just different hues. They could just as well have had it all as one big range. And frankly things like base vs layer (talk talk GW language) aren't set ins tone either, if a "base" colour is the right hue for your highlights then go for it. Mixing is heavily encouraged, and most of the different brands here (so stuff like GW, Vallejo, Warpaints, P3, Scale75, etc) happily mix with each other. You can also mix "regular" paints with washes, though this will obviously have a bit of impact on the consistency.
>>
What has been the most unbalanced disposition matchup you have played? I've been out of the game for a few additions and I'm thinking about rejoining but I want to understand the disposition mechanics more before I go spending more money on models to update my army. I play Orks in several of my favorite units have been made Legends so it would be a sizeable investment to buy back into the meta.

In general you just pick the one that your army works best with

Nah, the only advantage is not having to remember recipes if you want identical color schemes on minis. For instance in your example those are different shades of brown right out the pot, if you manually make them with mixing you might not get the exact tone unless you're precise (this is easier with paints that are in dropper bottles for getting controlled amounts)

Vallejo paints are pretty decent and you can get away with buying one base color and one highlight color and shade it with a wash. Not that I don't enjoy spending my money on small stuff but if you want uniformity across your models there's a reason why people end up buying lots of paints instead of mixing it all the time.

There is zero reason for GW not to use dropper bottles. Zero. None. Null. Nil. The are mass produced, more convenient to use, easier to store, easier to produce, easier to recycle. Hell, they could make dropper bottles with less paint than the current things and still sell them at the same price if they wanted to. It's ridiculous. EVERY OTHER BRAND HAS DONE THIS.

Game color is thinner out the bottle and model color is more pigmenty, they say but I don't really know what that means yet. You can get a basic color like model blue and then have model black to make a navy blue and model ivory to make a light blue. Using an off-white but still light color is better for mixing than a pure white, they say but again don't ask me exactly why.

Why do you think you'll be able to make the meme go away just by pointing out it's old? People STILL bring up the Imperial Fists' shit eating ceremony or Tyranids getting stopped by razor wire or whine about Matt Ward, and squatting is still shorthand for discontinuing a model range.

Space Marines will never shake the stink of Primaris Lieutenants off of them, that's just the way of things.
>>

>>
>>98703922
Maybe this is an outdated idea but I quite strongly believe that if your argument is actually worth making it should be able to stand on its own without exaggerating or making up details to convince people. If the number of lieutenants is really so egregious, then surely saying the actual correct number is enough to convince people of that fact, without padding the numbers?
They did release quite a few. Or you can just go on saying the shit that semantically feels right to you but isn't even correct. That doesn't bother most people in today's society.

Im painting CSM right now too and I think they are a bad case study for slapchop.

the best way to paint chaos is to fill in the armor after base coating the model in the same color as your trim, this is nice because you can go back over the trim areas where you were sloppy and simply do touchups.

I am painting some cartoony night lords so ive gone in the opposite direction. and its kind of a pain,

>Getting back into warhammer
I'm sorry for your loss.
>When did wargear stop costing points?
When the game designers got lobotomized and decided to roll all wargear upgrade costs into the base unit price so now there's literally no reason to ever not take the best wargear selections and trying to be frugal with cheap, unupgraded infantry is now punished
>What the fuck is a detachment?
It used to be a way of modifying the Force Organization Chart to let you take more of specific units that you would normally not be able to take (see also: Deathwing or Ravenwing). They still do that, but FOCs are gone now, so the main reason to take a Detachment is for the alternate special rule it grants your army (but you have to meet the requirements by having enough of a specific unit included in your army to use said detachment). It's retarded.
>>
>>98703970
It has dawned on me that the days of me being able to drink beer while playing 40K are over. If I have to score on every turn I can't have a laid-back casual attitude. I have to constantly be thinking about objectives, mine and the opponents. the primaris lieutenant thing is really just so GW can release one off models for various reasons (store events, promotional boxes, etc) and they have a lot of visual appeal. these are single monopose models so it isn't a lot of work to create the models, part the model out and get them fit to a small sprue in whatever software they use.

I'm excited to see how it plays out. Tacticus got tougher and more lethal (broadly, not as much as T3 players cried about) with only minor points increases, but their detachments are dogshit. Gravis and Phobos got more lethal, no tougher, slightly worse abilities, minor point increases but with good detachments. Terminators got way better, way more expensive, and probably the best detachment in the book. Vehicles generally got worse rules and suffer most without easy rerolls every turn.

I think maybe your batch is not a bad one or vallejo fixed it without publicly acknowledging the problem.
I'll try the metallics I have on some DnD preprimed minis and see how it goes. But just for metallics. Most of my regular paints are from AK 3rd gen. The 3rd gen metallics are the weakest part of AK's acrylic line in my opinion mostly in color tone choice.

Would not recommend Vallejo paints since in my use they foam like hell. Also about mixing paints, you often can do it but some colors mix poorly because they themselves are mixes which can result in complementary mixes which just turns your paint to brown grey sludge.

Empire state troops and militia boxes come with skull cap heads, though they're not very marinelike.

It's weird that GW likes to show off marines with just the mask part and separate helmet portion, but never marines with just the helmet with removed mask. And it's only a few helmets variants with the separate mask part. Mainly MkX with a few MkVIIs (if you want to imagine the grill masks as the grill face of the helmet). FW did make one MkII face mask without the helmet in their tank crew kit. No MkIV, VI, terminator, etc. heads with the mask and no helmet.

I think in RT IG and SM shared their helmet designs. At least the IG helmets looked very much like the Marine helmets without the mask. Both had a similar shape with the angry brow, disks on the sides and an off-set optic comb on top.

Lorgar is pretty based if you read the HH books. One of the few traitor Primarchs who isn't all whining and bitching, gets the job done, and gets his eternal reward from the Chaos Gods for his success. He's evil and he loves being evil. Perturabo, Angron, Mortarion, Kurze, and Magnus just whine incessantly for the whole Heresy but Lorgar is having the time of his life (along with Fulgrim).

I don't think you should be so quick to dismiss the look
if marines and guards were closer entities it would be a very convenient thing to make them look closer from time to time

The HH special weapons don't come with arms because they're designed to fit the HH tactical kit bolter arms (meaning all bolter arms across all marks are made to have the same exact poses).

Depends. Lorgar's motives are basically "I was right all along" and he is, in fact, proven right all along. So it's spite that drives him, with an extra bit of hindsight. Yet he's also an underdog who wants to prove himself to his brothers (traitor and otherwise) and works very hard to 'save' Angron (by ruining his life, but he thought he was helping) as well as to improve his own skills to defeat his more vaunted brothers like Guilliman. Some would find that fun, at least.

You can mix anything and get any color, you only need to remember the correct mix to get the same paint again if you need it.
It can be a pain in the ass to always mix your paints, even more when you need a lot of it (like for an army).
Having a good amount of paints is simply extremely convenient and there is also some shade of colors that are not easy to get.

Can confirm. Some paints of different pigments and tones mix better than others. Even in the same range from the same manufacturer.
That doesn't mean one should forgo paint mixing. It is still a useful action when painting models to try for mixing paints. I think layering and skin tones is best for this. Even if just sticking to 50/50 mixes.

It just means if you want a nice green buy a nice green, don't try to create it with your blues and yellows. Painting highlights and shadows by mixing colours is generally going to be both cheaper and more effective than buying lighter and darker versions of the same hues. You don't have to be precise when mixing when you're working from a fixed base colour. Just get a paynes grey for shadow and a warm ivory for light and have fun.

that’s cause you’re looking at religion too deeply through the lens of religion needing to resemble traditional christianity. khorne worship comes from live human/xenos sacrifices like the ancient aztecs did to power the sun, and tzeentch worship comes from bringing about great change and unlocking inner potential through mysticism and so resembles modern day doomsday cults like Aum Shinrikyo.

Hopefully those points previews were fake since it was stuff like Intercessors and hellblasters only being 5 points more and a few named characters being like 10-15. And land raiders actually got cheaper, meaning if your list was infantry and land raiders it's probably a wash.

I really hope GW doesn't mess this up. The stat increases are fine *IF* points costs are higher, losing Oath actually matters, and other books get cool stuff too (their own buffs, or their weapons updated to still kill marines, or cheaper to be more horde-like, whatever). If marines get these stat increases and are only more expensive by like 5 points and armies like sob and votann are still using old bolter profiles wounding new marines on 5's then I'm going to be really sad.

I play marines but I also play muliple other armies, and even if I didn't play other armies I would still want a fair and fun environment.

The thing that makes me hopeful is that losing Oath is actually pretty noteworthy, that is a nerf. Oath+Gladius detachment is stronger than having Gladius as your army rule and taking some other random detachment instead of Gladius,. which looks like is what is happening. So hopefully that makes things balanced...

I think the biggest irony of tactical primaries load out drama has got to be the fact 8th edition introduced split fire thus making actual mixed squads easier and better to play with because an often majority ran simple loadouts for ease of play

Yeah, Dark Eldar have literally been sanitized for almost two decade now and people act like they're still too wild for GW to draw attention to. The Vect slave barge with the only scantily clad women is literally over 25 years old now.
>>
>>98704837
Yep, that's it exactly. Multi weapon or even 10 man devastaor squads would become more useful too.
And what's with getting rid of combat squad rules just to put them right back for a single SW unit?
>>
What is this edition supposed to be referencing for the thread?
>>
>>98704843
Yeah , before 8th the entire squad had to shoot the same target unless someone had splitfire, wwhich was most common on Tau crisis suits as an upgrade as Tau support systems actually had individual rules.
>>
>>98704843
>>98704837
An often long held argument and proponent of mixed weapons was how sometimes you’d waste a rocket launcher or melta gun on something

Deveststors were worse this is why you’d often see mono load outs to build a specific squads niche. Otherwise you would just be overkill to waste 5 las canons on a ork boy squad for example

Another big example of this getting skewed is the 2016 tactical kit actually including a bunch of alternative weapons instead of forcing you to scrounge

If you want to make your own mixes, try to do it with empty bottles and a scale.
That being said, trying to mix basic colors isn’t always the path to what you want. You can make a lot of good greens by mixing cyan and yellow, or tinting yellow over, but there are also just green paints with green pigments that will look better, depending on the color you’re looking for.

I’ve made this argument before, and I know it’s controversial, but I think 40K has an inherent contradiction that became impossible to ignore around 10 years ago: the lore’s obsession with technological stagnation and the tabletop’s need for constant innovation are fundamentally at odds.

40K was built around technology being ancient, lost, and difficult to replace. That stagnation is a huge part of its identity. But GW also has to constantly sell new models. You can’t endlessly introduce new weapons and units into a setting where humanity supposedly barely understands its existing technology.

For years, GW worked around this with “we found an STC,” Forge World explaining that something was experimental or rare, or the AdMech simply disapproving of new technology. Centurions and grav weapons were a good example. People understandably asked, “When the hell did Space Marines start using this? They just found an STC and immediately mass-produced it?”

The same conflict exists in squad design. Assault Intercessors lacking jump packs in 9th caused plenty of complaints, despite non-jump-pack assault squads already existing in the lore as Despoilers. But on the tabletop, players naturally wanted jump packs because they were cooler and more useful.

Vanguard Veterans show it too. Lore presents them as melee specialists, but players optimized them into standardized loadouts like thunder hammers and storm shields. Mixed equipment makes more sense narratively; optimized equipment makes more sense in a game.

That’s my central point: the more GW develops 40K as a living tabletop game, the more it inevitably conflicts with the stagnant setting that originally defined it. Primaris around 2017 simply made that contradiction impossible to ignore.

The “lore vs. tabletop” argument isn’t really about one side being stupid. They’re asking 40K to do fundamentally different things.

>How the fuck do Marine players not get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff they have?
By only buying the things they like/care about?
Do xenosfags really think that ALL marinefags just buy everything GW makes? Like do you really believe for example that an Iron Hands fan will care about and buy Blood Angels shit just because it is more space marines? No, they'll buy Iron Hands shit when it comes avaivable and ignore the BA stuff.
>>
I have often had this argument written up but I think people barely would care for it also LONG

Warhammer 40ks lore purity and table top are effectively both detrimental to each other and that utterly cracked 10 years ago. 40k built itself up on being stagnate, forced reuse of tech/relics thats appealed to the lore side heavily but its utter SUICIDE for a company trying to sell toys. This was often covered up for years with "Oh we found an STC, Forgeworld often giving paragraphs of okay these arent widespread BUT, or the admech hates we did this but fuck them. Centurions and Grav weapons around 2016 was the testament to that at that point.

Many met Centurions with "what? when the fuck did they use this? Really they just found the STC and shat it out instantly?"

You also see this with squad setups. I remember an often complained upon part in 9th was Assault Intercessors lacking jump packs for an entire edition. I saw the usual stuff you know the horus heresy complaints or destroying marine squad structure etc, but I also realized Assault Squads never always needed to WEAR jump packs because Heresy for some odd reason called the non JP ones Despoilers, its just something people gravitated towards because why wouldnt you want to use a cool jump pack? I looked into this rules wise and 98% of the time people often just gave them jump packs. I only found Blood Angel players typically ran on foot squads for specific strats but outside of that NOTHING and by the time Vanguard Vets came out the regular assault squad basically went MIA. VVs themselves are also per lore meant to be melee specialists but what did players do? Either SS and Thunderhammer or Lightning claw mono loadouts just because yet another lore vs table top mentality. Mixed loadouts in general fit more in a lore sense than a game sense and it did for years you saw them realize this around 7th/8th but it was too late primars were nearing completion phase.

Aside from the tried and true "we found a new STC" and "this shit was always around you just never saw it", the Imperium/Admech has always made slight tweaks and adjustments to their tech. They're just super slow and cautious about it because they don't want to fuck up STCs and are always wary of shit exploding into chaos as it is wont to do. You had shit like the Cursed Founding were Admech tried to tweak and experiment with geneseeds and lo and behold almost every single one backfired horrendously.

As scuffed as the sculpts were, Centurions were a perfect example of Imperium "innovation". Terminators aren't easily replaced and always in shorter supply than demand, so the Imperium tried to make something halfway as good by scaling existing exosuit tech to a larger space marine frame. It's not nearly as good as the thing it's meant to substitute, but it still showcases how the Imperium isn't completely allergic to innovation and development.

>>
>>98705263
At least you can still buy those 20+ year old sculpts. Drukhari have units less than a year old that have already been squatted.
>>
>>98705255
Tau tanks are the same as eldar wave serpents or dark eldar ravagers and literally don't need an update and the tau whining is gay.

Catachans are baffling because there have been multiple times GW could have put them in a kill team box just this year.

Chaos bikers are confirmed for a refresh in 11th anyway with doomrider.
>>
>>98705268
Yeah but the primaris refresh and squatting of firstborn was a negative, not a positive, so that's like the worst argument ever.
>>
i will say it is incredibly funny that instead of refreshing kabalite warriors, GW put an upgrade sprue in a kill team and 6 months after giving it rules in 40k for the first time it got squatted
>>
>>98705271
They literally had the perfect opportunity for Catachan with the red terror box and they made them Cadians again for some stupid fucking reason. I don't think Guard is hurting particularly badly and gets lots of cool new stuff but it's like the most obvious glaring oversight that they have to be avoiding them on purpose.
>>
>>98705280
also exodites was literally on a jungle planet CATACHANS ARE FROM A JUNGLE

I have to believe catachans will be refreshed Soon (TM) because otherwise it seems like GW fucked catachan over twice.
>>
>>98705279
Remember when they told everyone they wouldn't be getting 40k rules like all the other kill teams and just should be used as Warrior proxies even with blades instead of guns? Those were fun times.
The even funnier thing is the six months they were available to buy they were horrendous and had janky rules that didn't work with transports, and then they finally fixed it with the launch of 11th just before the discontinued the kit and now no one can buy them now that they're useful.
>>
>>98705271
the problem with tau tanks is that having only 1 main gun isn't good enough anymore. just having 1 shot from a hammerhead isn't doing a whole lot.
>>
>>98705293

It was a fun game, I see why so many people pick purge the foe as their detachment
>>
>>98705294

The ravager being the main tank of the faction with only three S12 shots is awful. Their actual main tank is more like the Voidraven Bomber which has the only S14 weapons but is an aircraft and limited by all the jank that comes with that. And that might even get squatted this edition if flyers are on the way out.
>>
>>98705297
Sounds like instead they should just release a Dark Elf Reapager with two+ guns and a Tau Lemon Shark with two+ guns

just combine the Hammerhead and Sky Ray into the new tank, the Hammerhead Executioner. GW just has to mold an upgrade sprue that lets you put the rail gun and the missile rack on the same turret.

10th, but now in 11th they are adding costs back in.

Detachments are themed, suits of buffs for your army.

>>
>>98705346

What I did for my cult was to pick a tyranid scheme and paint all the carapace and skin of the earlier generations with that, with the Patriach/Purestrains being that color only. Hybrids all wear clothes and robes, you can pick a color that suits into your tyranid scheme. I went for dark purple carapace and grayish blue for skin. For the clothes, it's dark green and burgundy. The ribbed armor is the same across everyone.
You'll be painting SO many models and I'd suggest keeping it simple.

>(clothes) all to be different even though they're in the same unit while also having something that unifies the army.
Harder to do with the GSC models, they're basically made to look like space miners, but if you end up doing a lot of conversions or using other models you can pick 2-3 tones that are muted and work together as general clothing around and have the bold skin/claws and tones link them together. Should stand out easily enough on the battlefield.

Enough genestealer mass makes a psychic beacon that attracts whoever is nearby. Some cults stay and get eaten, some go out as refugees to seed other worlds.
If you want to do gestural reference colour scheme wise to a hive fleet go for it. The unpredictable spread of the genestealers does mean whichever fleet answers the call could easily be different thought. Especially with space hulks irregular travel.

Now I'm about to blow your mind. Instead of getting a new bottle, you buy Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner instead and use it to fill your bottles. It's basically the same thing for significantly less money, I've been using it as cement myself.

The whole "models must have rules" legal copyright bullshit is extremely lame. They could release 3-4 special guardsmen kits that simply act like cadians/dkok/catachans in the codex but are modeled as Vostroyans/Steel Legion/Mordian/etc. They would make a fuck ton of money. Guard is the one army I can for sure say they are losing sales to third parties either via printing or resin casts.

I'm going to try and extend the plastic brush to use as much as possible.
As for the airbrush cleaner. Is it really safe on airbrushes when it can be used as a plastic cement alternative.

>Guard is the one army I can for sure say they are losing sales to third parties either via printing or resin casts.
I don't think they are losing money. It is more like they are not or barely meeting expectations from GW if I'm being honest.
Paypiggy/waacfag wallets are huge, anon. But I imagine the "casual sales" are why guard isn't meeting expectations. If that is the case.
>>
>>98705984
The whole point of the cleaner is to chew through the acrylic binder that settles in your Airbrush for thorough cleaning, it also chews through the plastic the same way and makes it malleable which is how it also acts as a "glue" in the first place. I use it to clean my temu airbrush though it's dead now due to its tip, but it really cleaned up everything. You get 200ml of the stuff for $2 more.
>>
>>98705977

It's difficult because at what point does it become too much or too little? How many special guard flavours can you realistically sell before bloating the range of units for the faction. I feel like people would be just as unhappy if they released a single unit box of 10 dudes that can only be used to proxy for example. I am on the fence about what they'll do with Steel Legion when it comes out too, best case they get a krieg treatment with like 5 kits and a character, but even then it feels like that aspect of "did we really need more unique rules" comes to mind.

a one track mind exactly describes what they’re doing. absolutely engrossed in whatever they’re doing at the moment, paying no heed for anything around them. a squad of proper fighters would understand that although whatever threat they may be facing may be great, its a blunder to leave a potential threat lurking around, and so would have one squad member aim his gun to quickly take him out before joining in with the squad in firing. as it stands, there’s a space marine at the front with his back turned to the guy with a gun and chainsword, and the rest of the squad is completely ignoring him. space marines are strong but they aren’t invincible, and hoping to react in time or that he won’t hit you in a critical weakpoint is arrogant and foolish.

I will not chud out about this, but the incorrect usage of gendered titles bothers my pedantic autism greatly
I don't care about muh gothic language, the rest of the gendered titles are correct. There's no man titled "duchess," no woman titled "underlord," why are the ones I mentioned above wrong
Yes I know "dux" can be used for women, but it'd need a modifier like "dux femina" as was used to refer to Dido in the Aeneid because dux on its own is masculine.

>How does she do it?
Fwiw, some of those faces are based on real people, which are far easier to sculpt because you're following a model instead of making a generic face.
"Commander Caine" is Michael Caine, specifically from his role as Gonville Bromhead in Zulu. "Lt. Sean Blackthorn" is Sean Bean, specifically from his role as Sharpe in the series of the same name.
I can't speak on the other ones.

>but the incorrect usage of gendered titles bothers my pedantic autism greatly
The games is in like alpha development so the random name generator with the random art for governors it gives is still be tinkered with. These are all randomly generated govnerors for the same single world.
I like Baroness Jacob Gerantus as a weird non binary obese lesbian monster looking person.

>the clothes muties are wearing to all be different even though they're in the same unit while also having something that unifies the army
You could make the clothes different colour but have the armour and nid bits all have the same colour scheme.

The main reason I chose to do my own faction is because I wanted to be able to write my own stories about them without just working them into the shadows of existing characters. If they're a whole new group, I have complete freedom. Also because I like to mix and match tropes or themes from different groups and pick my own color scheme
