>>98730739It's easy to make a decent 40 tonner - a PPC and 7/11/7 is all it takes.
I lean 90-95 are probably the worst tonnages, 40 just has a bad rap because intro tech.Sure to make a good 40 it'll be a one or two trick pony tho.
>>98730822I think 20 tons is probably the actual worst just because of how limited it is. All you can really do is make a fast, fragile, and poorly armed scout mech, and even then a heavier light like the Spider does the same role while having at least a little bit of armor.90-95 tons mostly suffers from a lack of good canon designs, since usually when you want to make a big heavily armored assault you just go straight to 100 tons, so 90-95 is mostly left for weird awkward mechs like the stock Banshee.
How are mercenary units in the Draconis Combine set up?Is it usually as a noble’s private guard or corporate security?
>>98730840The Death To Mercenaries thing was a relatively brief period. Before and after that they're private corporations like in every other country.
Total Spheroid Death.
>>98730836That's fair but it's limited by size, while the 40 range also has that image but also just pushed up to a med class so engine really hits cost/weight.You know a 20 tonner is a one trick pony has to be. But 40 is like that but just fatter while there lots of good 35 tonners.
Dear CGL, please make more periphery construction shitboxes please.
>>98730836Idk, the locust has good variants and puts its limited armor on the things that actually keep it alive.
>>9873073990 tons is actually the true cursed tonnage when you stop to think about it.
>>98730879Yeah, imo most good assault mechs are either 85 or 100 tons.
>>98730822I just got to try out the sagittaire 9D as the head of a C3 lance, i was satisfied with it. I like ER PPCs, and the LB-10x's worked well with the jenner C2 i had jumping around as a C3 slave
tiny mechs only make sense if you are playing for battle valueyou wouldn't put a strong pilot in a bug mech therefore they are significantly likely to get splattered without accounting for themselvesin every case there is a slightly heavier mech that is just as fast, more survivable and maybe even adds another mission such as killing infantry or carrying ECMbut who plays games big enough to allow for an optional pack of bugs??
>>98731088Bugs are a huge part of campaign play, which does include larger fights. It's not for pickup fags. Which makes them putting not-actual-bugs in the box super dumb. It should just be 1 lance locust, 1 lance stinger, 1 lance wasp. It's like they picked a stupid middle road that satisfies nobody. Yet, the full Urbanmech company somehow made it to market. Jesus-fucking-Christ.
>>98731088>>98731103You really want you best scouts in your bug mechs for campaign play. The gunnery and piloting are incidental. If you want a good pilot for a scout lance something like a Javelin or Phoenix Hawk would be way better.
>>9873108820 ton mechs really do suffer with the issue they only tend to shine in the type of games that virtually nobody ever plays. That said bug only fight slap fights can be entertaining.>>98731103Should have had 1 lance of locust variants so you got a LCT-1E, LCT-1S LCT-3V etc and done the same for the other bugs.
>>98730814Why do that in 40 when you can do it in 30?
I have been trying to come up with a fun and fluffy company to use when introducing people to alpha strike with the scouring sands campaign, trying to make sure most weight brackets have something going for them so everyone can have a fun litlte gimmick regardless of mission restrictions PV wise. (Some go as low as 120PV but most are between 200PV and 300PV, but some missions do go all the way with 400PV vs 400PV)I eventually settled on the grandson of a former Fedcom general turned mercenaries after the clan invasion, piloting his grandfathers Atlas. The original company consisting of just a light lance led by the Wraith, and then the Atlas and Warhammer working together as a duo to take down bigger targets. Managing to pull off a pirate hunting gig with great salvage rights and scoring themselves a Phoenix Hawk IIC 10 with a big axe that I still need to figure out how to properly model on in a way that wont snap off, but I'm already behind on painting. Also it seemed like a good choice for playing around with the melee edge cards. They then managed to bluff their way into getting an entire star worth of merchant caste turned wannabee warriors to team up with them. At least long enough for them to take on the 3 month contract for the Alyina Mercantile League, if they fail to impress they are unlikely to stick around after the contract expires. And yes that is an entire lance of 10J'' mechs with heat weapons. Teaming the jumping capellan warhammer with plasma rifles up with three clan mechs with plasma cannons. The company now a guaranteed repeat customer for plasma cartridges and HAG slugs for the foreseeable future.
>>9873088580 is decently cursed, aside the awesome.
>>9873121580's problem is the eternal temptation for go 5/8 despite the fact that 75 tonners are objectively better for that.
>>98731182Armor, mainly. 30 tonners aren't that durable.>>9873121580 tonners are mostly fine. The Awesome is just incredibly minmaxed, so it makes everything else look bad.
>>98731270It's funny that even the bad Awesomes are still okay. They just look terrible in comparison to the good Awesomes. Even the 8R (the R stands for Retarded) is basically just a really fat Archer that can also breeze through any amount of external heat if that ever matters.
Do Salamander Battle Armor get -1 to swarm attacks for each magnetic claw for a total -2, or is it just -1 if they have any number of magnetic claws? I wish to throw HMG Salamanders at somebody and I need to know.
>>98731342As I read it, there isn't an additional bonus for having two. Unlike, for example, vibro claws where it's pretty specific regarding one claw vs two.
>>98731342Most claws only give whatever effect for having one.The Ogre stands out for its signature feature (two heavy battle claws) just being a waste of weight on the table since they can't swarm and wouldn't get any bonus for having two bigass combat claws anyway. If they had one single regular claw, they would have the exact same combat functionality but a lot more weight to dedicate to other weapons. It's something I hope they address when they get around to full BA rules in the new edition. A lot of suits have features that do literally nothing. They should get at least a small bonus for the dedication.
>>98731251I'm also a sucker for the Zeus, but that also applies.
>>98731215>80 is decently cursed
>>98731413>It's something I hope they address when they get around to full BA rules in the new edition. No! Things are allowed to be suboptimal! Things are allowed to waste huge amounts of weight on literally nothing!

HONOR THE DRAGON!
>>98731215Do you suck dicks for a living?>>98731557Cause you could build the exact same at 65 tons with zero loss to capabilities?
>>98731704>zero loss to capabilitiesLower physical damage and fewer structure points. Heavier mechs are more durable than lighter ones even with the same armor coverage.
>>98731704It would be easier to kill with less internal structure.
Would you rather have a Roadrunner or Prey Seeker?
>>98730822There is an engine optimization point for every tonnage 'Mech, and 90 and 95 DO have ones. 90 tons at 4/6 speed is the best for Light engines (though this is shared with 85 tons), while 95s have the 4/6 speed for XL engines. But even for standard, a 4/6 90 tonner or a 3/5 95 tonner are less than 2 tons from optimum. That is a shortfall, but it doesn't matter that heavily when you got 40-60 tons to work with.
>>98730836>All you can really do>what is Gùn for 200¥You can do all sorts of mech with 20t if you are OK with some limitations and drawbacks.
>>98730879Highlander shits on your stupid take monkeman.
>>98731789Highlander arguably would be more efficient at 85 tons.
>>98731182To get an extra 2 tons of payload (weapons, armor, heat sinks, jump jets, etc.) with a standard fusion engine, plus a bit of extra structure? (Or to get an extra 5.5 tons with an XL, or 6.5 with an XXL, but I'm both cases, you could get more still by going up to 50 tons.)
>>98731750Pray seeker, looks better.
>>98731803Cringe.
>>98731761>it doesn't matter that heavily when you got 40-60 tons to work with.It always matters. Mechs are war machines. War machines need to make optimal design decision because lives are on the line. You don't see non optimal units on an IRL battlefield for this reason. Battletech is also a game, and gamers don't want to waste time on deliberately non optimal units that hurt your chances of winning the game. In both instances, non optimal units shouldn't exist.
>>98731803NTA, but not a lot. 0.5 tons structure, 1.5 tons engine, and the only reason it's not overweight is because you hit the JJ break point and save 3 tons there. Your only weight savings is that you HAVE to take off a ton of armor or waste it wholesale. So you're losing 16 points of armor, 8 points structure, 1 kick damage and 2 DFA damage for an extra heat sink and 40 BV savings. The biggest advantage is that you cut about 600k C-Bills off the price tag.
>>98731925>You don't see non optimal units on an IRL battlefield for this re-ACK
>>98731932>laughs in hardened armor
>>98731943This is an attempt at optimality. It's an early version. In 5 years there will be slick versions of this.
>>98731954There are no canon Highlanders that run hardened.
>>98731962So it's not optimal, then.
Mick Aaron's? Macca Runs? Muh Karens?
>>98731988>Mick Karen's?This is correct.
>>98731932Its a good example where theoretically you are better going lighter but in reality it works out worse. If C-Bills were a worthwhile metric considering that is its only real arguable advantage for going lighter cause 600k is a lot of hookers and blow.>>98731963But are there any Highlanders that give you hard ones?
>>98732043I'm still a sucker for the -732b. Most variations are still running standard structure/engine anyway, and the ones that aren't are a bit off the vibe for me. Schmitt and Jorgensson were on some good shit with their customs, though.
>>98731925For what it's worth, they explain a lot of that in the fluff as a consequence of governments approving sub-optimal designs for production based on pork barrel politics.I've always felt BattleTech, in spite of everything, is one of the more "realistic" military scifi settings because it takes a lot of economic factors into account that others don't. And the biggest one is that for most developed nations, weapons (and the wars they're meant to fight in) are first and foremost a revenue stream.

>>98732127The Storm.
>>98732127How about "The Iron Heels"?
>>98731215The STC-2S is also pretty nice. But it would be better at either 75 tons (for playing in matches that don't allow assaults, limit the number of assaults, or limit total tonnage) or 85 tons (for higher structure and higher physical attack damage). (Also if it wasn't missing a hand actuator for no good reason, but that's a common failing that has nothing to do with tonnage.) Which is actually the general problem with (early or inexpensive) 80-ton 'Mechs — they're tied with 75- and 85-tonners for 4/6 standard fusion engine payload maximization, and one or the other of those two alternative tonnages will generally be (slightly) better, for any given set of further optimization criteria. They're not optimal for any speed with XL or Light engines, but they're close for 5/8 XL's, only losing 2 tons relative to a 75-tonner. I think they might actually be tied for 5/8 XXL? If not, they're at least very, very close. The AWS-8Q avoids the "75 tons is just as good apart from structure and kick damage, and counts as a Heavy" trap by being slow for its weight (or, more to the point, light for its speed), but that just makes the other side of things worse. Just going up to 85 tons and putting the additional mass in heat sinks would shift it from a heat-neutral-at-a-walk (with the option of running on the 2-PPC turn) 3/3/2 firing pattern to being able fire every PPC every round. And if you bring it up to 100 tons . . .This is emphatically not to say that the AWS-8Q is a bad 'Mech; it's great! But it could be quite a bit greater, even just sticking to introtech.

>>98732194I am not a fan of the Longbow, the 3/5 versions could be a Stalker or LRM carriers and the 4/6 versions could be Archers.
>>98732194The Stalker II is a funky brick that's liable to fall over and never stand back up. And as a 3/4, it's also not likely to ever be able to bring its mlas to bear unless there's an immobile objective that the enemy has to be standing around.

>>98732112A rather curious choice of "insult," given the broader context of that anecdote. From Plutarch:> For men of the same tribe or family little value one another when dangers press; but a band cemented by friendship grounded upon love, is never to be broken, and invincible; since the lovers, ashamed to be base in sight of their beloved, and the beloved before their lovers, willingly rush into danger for the relief of one another. Nor can that be wondered at; since they have more regard for their absent lovers than for others present; as in the instance of the man, who, when his enemy was going to kill him, earnestly requested him to run him through the breast, that his lover might not blush to see him wounded in the back. It is a tradition likewise, that Iolaüs, who assisted Hercules in his labors and fought at his side, was beloved of him; and Aristotle observes, that even in his time, lovers plighted their faith at Iolaüs's tomb. It is likely, therefore, that this band was called sacred on this account; as Plato calls a lover a divine friend. It is stated that it was never beaten till the battle at Chæronea: and when Philip, after the fight, took a view of the slain, and came to the place where the three hundred that fought his phalanx lay dead together, he wondered, and understanding that it was the band of lovers, he shed tears and said, "Perish any man who suspects that these men either did or suffered any thing that was base."
>>98730843Wasn't it like 20+ years?
Wish the Highlanders just replaced its LRM20 with either PPC or LBX10
>>98732217Theoretically a version of the Stalker II designed around a homage to the 3H and drops enough Medium lasers to upgrade the ELRMs to 20's MIGHT work as some kind of vaguely mobile Missile Turret. Or Sturmfuer with extra steps. Or failing that MMLs. Although that's kind of the Inner Spheres answer to how to upgrade any missileboat past a certain point.Still, that it took over thirty years for them to actually make a bad 85 tonner is impressive innings, and I'd like to say the Lu Wei Bing isn't very good, albeit not very bad, just... boring, that came at around the same timeframe anyway.
>>98732101Dah-vee-on. Pretty consistently in vidya.
>>98732286>expecting a member of the big mac to study the classics
>>98730840Varies. ALAG are corporate security that do jobs for other employers (and sometimes for the Combine itself) on the side, and are big enough to have their own variants of multiple iconic Kuritan 'Mechs. They're unlikely to be alone in this, especially during the Death to Mercenaries period. IIRC, there at least one named mercenary group that got conveniently classified as some noble's private guard during that period. And outside of that period, there are mercenary units that are just . . . mercenary units, openly.
>>98732549It's kind of a byproduct of mercenary being the most convenient classification for any sort of private force that isn't directly owned by an autocrat. Even outside of the Combine, being mercenaries is much more legally convenient than any alternative once you start getting proper war machines. Nobody bats an eye at mercenaries hanging around, but the militant arm of a cult or a corporation's private army would be concerning. Even if the forces they "employ" were founded by members of that group using funding from that group and only ever work for that group, framing it as mercenaries on a long term contract makes it legally sound.
>>98732612Even some of the autocrats, if they're taking their private forces out of their own jurisdiction, saying they're mercenaries now allows them freedom of movement. When lord so-and-so's son runs off with a family mech and takes a couple knights with him, they're not acting as an errant force of the state. They're mercenaries. Mercenaries that no other state would trust, but still mercenaries.
What made the mercs more popular and proliferated in the BT universe, compared to IRL? I mean, I don't think PMCs are not that big of a deal now
>>98732680A lot less interlocking military agreements and a lot more units being cut loose for one reason or another. The feudalism encourages private ownership and then the culture of private ownership leads to services for sale. When the star league fell apart, whole regiments of the SLDF were left with all the materiel they could carry and no one to tell them to return it to a depot.
>>98731925>You don't see non optimal units on an IRL battlefield for this reasonthat's almost every piece of military equipment ever fielded what the fuck do you mean

>>98732763Smol
What is the most obscure mech you've ever fielded in a game?
>>98732736There is actually an optimization going on with the M3 mediums. No chassis existed in inventory at the time with a turret big enough to mount a 75mm gun so the M3 was designed quickly to get the weapon in the field while M4 and its turret could be designed and produced.
>>98732812Hawkwolf. Runners up in no particular order include a Patriot, Mortis, and Ostwar (before it was in plastic). When this campaign wraps up and we go back to random one-off fights, I'll bring out a Fire Scorpion and Snow Fox for a Seeker force.
>>98732736what's the difference between them?
>>98732837A stop gap measure to hold you over until your next stop gap measure is not an optimal unit.It wasn't even optimal for what they were trying to do. Just getting a 75mm gun into an armored vehicle would have almost certainly been better fulfilled by a simpler design that did away with the extra turret entirely in what would have effectively been an american stug.
>>98732865The one nicknamed "lee" on the right has an additional MG turret-cupola operated by the commander on top of the base turret. The one nicknamed "grant" on the left does away with the MG turret-cupola and makes the base turret more roomy. The grant's turret also allowed for other things that I would say made it better overall despite the loss of the MG turret, like a radio, better turret armor and an internal smoke mortar.
>>98732885P.S. Both versions have a radio, it's just that the grant specifically has a radio conveniently in the turret where the commander is and the lee's radio is in the hull and was initially operated by a full time radio operator and later made the responsibility of the driver.

>>98732939I think any of the clickytech originals that haven't featured prominently in ilclan are fairly obscure. Mechs from less visible factions, clickytech, a lot of the mooks from the 3060s. >>98732812Roadrunner iirc
>>98732985Also the less glamorous star league mechs. You know, the ones that don't even have new art. I bring them up here fairly often because I actually do have and use them, but I've never seen anyone else do so.
I've been thinking about running an "oops, all Banshees" lance since I noticed that the BV for BNC-3E + BNC-3M + BNC-3Q + BNC-3MC, all with 4/5 pilots, is a bit under 6000. Depending on the scenario, it seems like it could work, either against other Succ Wars 'Mechs as-is, or against somewhat later 'Mechs (up to a point, and no doubt with plenty of bad match-ups) after loading up with precision ammo. Although perhaps it would be better to drop the -3M in favor of something a bit faster, in the later case.I know that this is not going to be optimal. What I'm wondering is whether it will (a) be a giant drag to play and/or (b) be likely to piss off any pick-up game opponents I bring it against, for one reason or another. Thoughts?

>>98732870>A stop gap measure to hold you over until your next stop gap measure is not an optimal unit.It gets memed on but the M4 is possibly the best tank of the war. It was an absolute monster when it was first deployed, extremely reliable for the period and easy to maintain and was able to take upgrades right up till the end of the war. It also replaced most British tanks for a reason and the cruiser types in particular.>the turretThe turret had the same gun as the M3 light tank and at this point everyone had realized you want turrets on anything that isn't a specialized assault gun or tank destroyer. Again, when the tank was designed the 37mm gun was an adequate weapon against anything it would encounter with the exception of panzer IIIs with the additional armor refit but their weapon was only effective at short range vs the M3 medium. And they would still get knocked out by the 75mm gun anyway.
Is there any in-universe reason for the battlemech classes converging into one Main Battle Mech, like MBT in real life?
>>98733204Fast heavies with lots of armor and big guns are already possible. Lights are too fragile so you have to rely on fast mediums, but they're weak. Assaults are too slow unless they dedicate way too much space to be modestly not slow.
>>98733123>It was an absolute monster when it was first deployedThe sherman was tactically average at best when initially put into service, all of its value was strategic. The germans were already fielding panzer IVs with a high velocity 75mm gun that made the sherman's gun look like a joke and the soviets were producing T-34s with a turreted 76mm gun before even the lee was being produced.>The turret had the same gun as the M3 light tank and at this point everyone had realized you want turrets on anything that isn't a specialized assault gun or tank destroyer. The entire point of the tank was that the 37mm gun was deemed inadequate by the very people that wanted the tank in the first place. It clearly would have been better logistically and tactically to just do away with the turret entirely, stugs demonstrated that assault guns could be effective against all ground targets despite lacking a turret, the lee's 75mm gun is what did the overwhelming majority of work.
>>98733204Probably the 5/8/5 heavy, there are plenty with good weapon loadouts and they are usually well protected.
>>98733204The SLDF demanded hyperspecialization from the capitalists, who then enslaved the military industrial complex into a state of having 'mechs with specific battlefield functions, and for each new gap in the paradigm, a new 'mech was produced instead of just adapting an existing 'mech to cover the gap. Double bubble, as it were, since corps got set the prices.
>>98733232>The sherman was tactically average at best when initially put into service>panzer IVs with a high velocity 75mm gunMan you are a stupid one. The M4 in North Africa bullies anything that isn't a Panzer IV special and those were not that common in the Axis tank inventory. Every legacy vehicle opposing it was hopelessly outmatched.>that made the sherman's gun look like a jokeA joke at what? Until Tiger I shows it is more than adequate against any AFV it would face and it wasn't like there was not a whole tank destroyer force whose job it was to hunt enemy tanks. The short 75mm is better delivering high explosive because it can contain more filler and that is the ammo a tank crew is more likely to use. In any case the M4 gets its own long gun upgrade in about a year and is back being able to knock out anything it would encounter for most of the war while the Panzer IV was at the end of the road. The turret ring was too small to take any more gun upgrades so was intended to be phased out by Panther but that was a whole other set of problem.>T-34 76Are we really going to shit on the M3 turret but give pre T-34-85 turrets a pass? >>98733621Teach the Russians how to support the weight. Without Christie, T-34 wouldn't even have been invented. Without American aid, there would have been no materials to build T-34s from. Soviet WW2 armor owes everything but its fuel to American ingenuity and logistics.

>>98733683Nope, just the Avatar has a plastic model. The new MUL entries for the firestarter and blackjack omnis direct people to the packs with the standard versions, which makes me think they aren't planning on making specific models for those. Otherwise you're left with ironwind.Tho, I was just talking about new configs when I was said I wanted more support, I don't care for catalyst plastic.
>>98733683Too few, which is a shame. Even poor Thanatos, the not-omni Omni derivative, lacks a model.
>>98733662The Soviets definitely would have eventually gotten their own tanks on their own if they had to, but getting a jump start with that Christie certainly helped. If I remember right it wasn't delivered with a turret, so they had to make their own, but they still got to develop tank doctrine earlier than if they started from scratch.
>>98733706But they already did have their own tanks. They were producing indigenously designed tanks in the hundreds years before they even purchased the christie tanks.
>>98733719Up-armoring a tractor doesn't make it a tank.
>>98733622Generally I don't like them very much because they usually sorta suck, but mostly because they go against the ethos of IS mechs in general. IS mechs can take a beating and are cheap to repair and cheap to replace, relatively speaking. So what if they take longer to fix up because they aren't omni mechs, it's completely unrealistic to expect to have a hangar full of super expensive modular parts you can just swap onto your mech when it gets busted. They just sorta frustrate me, like the Gauntlet for example feels like it's just stealing the spotlight from the Bushwacker which is much prefer to see new variants of over the Gauntlet which is a very restricted and uninspired design imo

What do you guys think of the nuWarShip designs?
>>98733901The Renault FT, by way of the Holt caterpillar tractor the FT was derived from. T-18 is literally a tractor's grandchild design with a turret stuck on top.
>>98733914Soulless garbage except for the JumpShips
>>98733914You can really tell they're Gundam fans. Whether or not that's a good thing is a matter of personal taste.
>>98733922You have failed to present the tractor it is supposedly converted from. The FT wasn't converted from tractors either, nor designed based on a tractor.
>>98733914Many (most?) of the "CJF" Aegises in the Invasion were actually Snow Raven ships. Also they're fine, but I like the 2750 art better.
>>98733933You need to brush up on your research, the FT is a well-known derivative of the Holt. Accept your education and yield before further embarassment.
>>98733914Disappointing adaptations for the most part, they look fine for generic science fiction ships. Probably better than what CGL would have made but that is a low bar which PGI regularly surpasses.
>>98733939Then you should easily be able to actually provide the holt tractor it was supposedly converted from. Right?Since you will inevitably fail to do so, I will tell you. Estienne was merely inspired by the continuous track system on holt tractors, but the FT 17 was designed from the ground up by the development team, it was not based on a tractor.

>>98733622Gauntlet is fuckawesome.
>>98733762Was their tank that one copy of the British tank that everyone was copying?
>>98733985Their first tank was the T-18 or MS-1, it was based on the world war 1 renault FT. On paper, it was one of the better FT variants made, but it was also made more than 10 years after the FT was initially produced. Some of the more iconic interwar soviet vehicles were direct copies of foreign tanks put into production and gradually modified according to their experiences, the T-26 being a vickers 6-ton copy and derivative, the BT series initially just being modified christie tanks. Indigenous iconic vehicles of the time would be the T-28 and T-35, they also had a number of more obscure indigenous light tanks and tankettes. These initial acts of plagiarism wouldn't leave much of a lasting legacy in soviet tank design, the T-26 was a dead end and the BT series' christie influence in the form of christie suspension was abandoned in soviet tank design after the T-34, they would have actually switched to torsion bar suspension on the T-34 if they weren't so hard pressed for manufacturing capacity and efficiency during the war.

>>98733587Leopard 1's are kind of in a weird spot in the timeline development-wise. They were conceived during a small but specific time period where everyone was convinced that ATGM's and HEAT were unstoppable and there was no point uparmouring your tanks past the point of making them resistant to small arms fire, so the Leopard 1 was conceived as basically the german version of the Hellcat in many respect. Then some british lads shouted COMPOSITES! and the timeline readdressed itself.Meanwhile, the Soviet solution of going "High Explosive Anti-Tank cannot explode you if you explode yourself first! America invents the Cobra (I... think?). So it goes, so it goes.Always did have a soft spot for the Leopard II though. A tank developed with very singular goals because the developer could wake up and see the Soviet guard on the guard-tower from his bedroom whisper the words "Soon comrade" to him when he got up. How well it did that purpose in the end... ah well, drone warfare makes fools of us all I guess.

>read about all the many sects of WoB>all the normal people got murdered and couped until only the crazies were left in the BlakistsLegit depressing. This stuck with me especially:>"I thanked the ship for traveling this far, and wished it well through hyperspace." Masters didn't know what to say. Precentor Blane obviously caught the look of confusion, for he went on to say, "When True Believers do this, we are not asking for the machinery to work. Contrary to what popular opinion says of us, we know that all machinery works without prayer. But we want to respect the machinery made by human hands. Since technology is a fundamental part of our life, we believe that paying respect to it is paying respect to ourselves. If we do not use technology with respect, we lose respect for ourselves."(This guy got thrown out an airlock by the crazies)
>>98737656When it comes to killing Blakists, the Blakists have the right idea. They're just not willing to commit all the way. And that's where we step in.

>>98737957I wonder if the Apache will be the last manned attack helicopter. They seem too easily replaceable by, and vulnerable to, suicide drones.
>>98738021Drone tech is starting to get pretty crazy ngl. A lot of people were insisting Ukraine was a fluke and Russia was just no longer a peer to us, but with Iran now it seems set in stone that drones are going to be a major part of future conflicts.
>>98738021I doubt it. They'll look different for sure, but there are various instances you want something that can loiter in an area and suicide drones are far more one-and-done. It's relevant to note they aren't strictly opposed to each other, and you could make an attack helicopter platform that carries a payload of and serves as local command for suicide drones, for instance.
>>98738021Probably. The war in Iran is probably the last manned war. The ideal future war is releasing hundreds of millions of suicide drones programmed to kill everyone inside the GPS geographical coordinates of the country you hate.
>>98738342We've been over this - terror bombing doesn't work. People just hate you for bombing them and adjust their lives.Strategic bombing doesn't solve problems unless it's mated to actionable intelligence.A tactical nuke is a wasted nuke. The point of precision bombing is to use less bombs and to do less overall damage.Using massed drones as terror weapons to approximate the body count of nukes will still be counted as a war crime.
>>98738481>terror bombing doesn't workWith the ability to produce millions of drones that can actively hunt everyone inside a nations borders, it doesn't matter. You actually CAN depopulate the entire enemy nation. What was once a pipe dream is now reality to any sufficiently wealthy nation.

>>98737888There are like two configs in the entire series that are not shitty schizotech mechs, and one of them is the Deva Achilleus iirc. I think one of the Pretas is good as well. I should experiment more with them to see if there are any more surprisingly useful configs but it's pretty limited
>>98738744>LAM Bomb BaysHonestly I'm not a fan of that rule change, LAMs should be able to carry missiles on hard points the same way ASF do.
>>98738744I wish the Screamer made it past the prototype phase purely because it looks cool. I don't even if it'd suck, I'd run one anyway.
>>98738861Archangel Dominus is an extremely heavily armored assault with dual headcapping weapons and C3i. Arguably it would be better with dual gauss instead of dual HPPCs, but HPPCs are hardly bad weapons. Preta Dominus is an excellent C3i spotter, being extremely mobile with improved jump jets. All the Seraph configs are kind of schizo, though, and both if the heavies are at best kind of meh. And IIRC not a single Malak config has JJs, which should be mandatory for lights.
So I know I'm late to the party on playing this, but I've finally gotten around to it. I'm not done yet, but I'm really liking it so far. Most of the previous story based DLCs weren't really all that interesting to me and I was more concerned about the gameplay changes they brought with them. Yes, this is the one that brought clan mechs, but I'm really digging the story and presentation too. The missions themselves are showing what I think is a pretty accurate feeling to how the opening of the Clan Invasion probably went.Mission 1, we're just out to hunt down some pirates, but our militia allies have gone dark and we keep hearing the screams of the pirates about their enemies and getting slaughtered. The pirates end up charging us in waves, except it seems more like they're just trying to run past us and all their mechs are half destroyed already when we see them. Then we approach them remaining ones in the middle of a battle with clanners. The weird clanner speak coming in over the comms, the completely new enemy mechs. Then I started to fight them. At this point, I had grown overconfident. Even late game missions were becoming a bit routine and I was even on this mission in my trusty Highlander accompanied by 2 King Crabs and a Night Star. Yet these clan mechs half my size were surviving volleys the inner sphere mechs wouldn't. What's more, my right arm, with my Gauss Rifle, was blown off in seconds! I felt something in that moment. There was an intensity there. There was tension again! It's one thing to understand conceptually the power of the clanners weapons. It's a completely different thing to be on the receiving end of it.
>>98739086The mission concludes with having to make a run for it to GTFO of there. Then I get a cutscene of us seeing a Clan Wolf warship that I think accurately portrayed the horror and helplessness one would feel in that situation. It continues on and we here about the SOS cries for help that are coming out of every system having to deal with them. They're getting slaughtered and my guys are clearly only surviving because we're full 60/60 statted giga chads with Star League era assault mechs. Even then, they're starting to break our arms in these fights. The following missions see us get "victories" and I have to listen to my ally in the battle talk an unbelievable amount of shit talk about the clanners and I'm just laughing because this is the very definition of winning a battle while losing a war. The guy is clueless. It will be his downfall. Elementals start to appear and they make me uneasy, though I've managed to keep them away from me pretty well. Back on the ship, the newsfeed is doing a good job of showing how chaotic things are and the serious actions being taken by all the great houses. When there's the occassional bit of news about what the Capellan Confederation is doing, it feels quaint; like I'm looking into a gated community that's completely detached from the rest of what's going on and is just living their own lives there, in blissful ignorance of the horrors approaching them.Naturally, since I'm controlling Commander Mason, the giga-chad with no personality so the player can project himself onto the commander, I've got the backstory of being a descendent from what's clearly the legally distinct Wolf's Dragoons. So now I've made contact with Spears again and we're going to solve the mystery of the clans, even though I as the player am already aware of the mystery.
>>98739089I'm really liking it guys. Not just because now I have a bunch of clan mechs too, though that certainly doesn't hurt. They're expensive too! I went into this DLC with 230 million C-bills in the bank and now, after repairing, refitting, and upgrading my clan mechs, I'm down to just 30 million, but at least I have some MadCats now and a Dasher which can hit 270 KPH with the MASC activated.
>>98737338Oh, I knew it was one way or the other. Does the Apache fit into this square-dance at all?
>>98737342There was a Steel Battalion 2? I thought the sequel to that game was Chrome Hounds?
>>98738965Theoretically they could have just picked with form it worked best as and turned it into into either a proper aerospace fighter or mech.
>>98739086>>98739089>>98739094Well aside from the obligately >>>/v/ you have to factor in that PGI massively nerfed IS mechs and significantly buffed Clan equipment to pull this off. Like when a Clan ER PPC hits harder than a heavy gauss yet IS don't get access to the DHS they pay for in game of course it will be a slog. If you mod it so its much closer to how it would be on tabletop you start raising questions on how the fuck did the Clans even get as far as they did before getting stopped?
>>98739178Cobra was ancient and the Army was looking to phase them out and pass them down to the Reserves and Guard.
>>98739200Made problematic by mechwarrior 5 maps being the size of a postage stamp, everyone dropping directly on each others heads, and no one knowing how to use a mech properly in the first place.Clans whole thing is extra range and mw5 AI will always prioritize getting closer to the target. No one in MW5 kites.
I don't like building destruction missions. It always seems to boil down to either the defenders being literally incapable of meaningfully stopping the attackers or the attackers having so much CF to chew through that they spend the entire match shooting buildings and not actually fighting back as the defenders try to whittle them down.
