So /bgg/, how do you get people to play with? Im in a little rural town, so no boardgame cafes and all the people i made the effort to interact with, think that boardgames are the most boring thing ever.
So, how did you do it?

Play on TTS with anons or on BGA with randos.

By not living in a rural area? Try posting on facebook and host at either your place or a community center. You can ask to put up posters. Don't get discouraged if no one shows up at first, it will happen eventually. You should bring 4-5 board games for people and encourage people to bring their own and they can break off into their own groups if they want.

Kemet B&S, Inis, Hegemony, Las Vegas, Assault on Doomrock, Burning Banners, Space Empires 4X, March of the Ants, Ra, Toy Battle, Compile and if you haven't gotten it yet the Homeland expansion for Root is great. I would also keep an eye on upcoming releases like Tigris and Euphrates which you should definitely get, the new Dune edition, the new Dominant Species edition and maybe that Forbidden Stars remake.

>Im in a little rural town, so no boardgame cafes
Sounds like a good opportunity to consider an investment with the lack of competition, and open a board game cafe (Or just a small coffee shop with board games in it as a start)
>all the people i made the effort to interact with, think that boardgames are the most boring thing ever.
Probably because the ones you interact with only know board games that are Monopoly, Chess, Uno or Catan. You could try to introduce them to light but great games such as Fliptoons, Castle Combo or Scout. And ask for a bit of their time for a small game session and you might start from there to create a gaming group.
>>
>>98742222
Hard to say without knowing what kind of genres you are into. But basing off what I strongly recommend from my tastes: Bruxelles 1897, Critter Kitchen or Splendor (Pokemon Edition because it's easily one of the good looking versions out there)
>>
>>98742242
>how did you do it?
By roping in my brother and all my friends from school.

Last year I brought Challengers to an office party and everyone liked it. But I'm assuming "little rural town" also means "I don't work in an office where out of 50+ people I could find some like minded degenerates".

You're probably gonna have to go with other anons' suggestions.

Never. I've sold a ton of them, though. Probably should start throwing them out instead of wasting my time for a few euros.
>>What's the best game you never play?
HIS and la famiglia are strong contenders
>>What game you want to like more than you actually do
For the longest time it was deal with the devil. I do like Oath, conceptually. But I fucking hate it. I
Felt like a cooperative storytelling game more than a mechanically sound competitive one.
>>What game do you think you are sick of but end up enjoying everytime?
I keep thinking I've played too much Ra to really enjoy it only to be reminded how utterly brilliant it is almost everytime.
>>
>>98743688
Well, practice your coaxing skills here on people like me.

I have never played the game. I have only seen the box here and there. I have a feeling it is some sort of an eurogame, maybe.

Persuade me. Why whould i play it? I am genuinely curious
>>
>>98743816
It's an eurogame. And like most eurogame it's all about the theming.
> Persuade me. Why whould i play it? I am genuinely curious
Then I would have to sell you the entire genre of regency romance. Which is difficult. Heck, I don't know why a straight male like myself find a female-oriented genre so fascinating. To put it simply, regency romance is like a grimdark version of romance where girls (from rich families) have to compete and scheme against each other to be married before 25.

Root is not a bad game
>>
>>98746722
Ive played both in person and online.
It is a gem for my gang. Weve spent five hours on the first game and yet the hours flew by.
Ive seen the nastiest mergers made just to preempt someone elses telegraphed metger attempt and ruin it.
Rampant advances to cut off an expansion. Shipping monopolies that bleed the entire table. Players declaring a merge of their own two companies, believing no one else can make a move, only to have miscalculated and given it away. Glorious Siap saj takeout box creations that both dismantle a players rice holds while also emptying parts of the map just as rubber and oil comes into play.
The token placement on cities are the one annoyance we had.
Shipping is straightforward, but as ships start sharing spaces it can lead to recalculations, which either you allow in your group or hold the players accountable to: place a coin, commit to the shipping company.
Our games have also been wildly different. As players learn what to prioritize and build up on the tech tracks, we've had crazy games where early mergers decimated the landscape, or no mergers for an entire Era but bidding track wars to ensure when mergers are unlocked, you have the advantage in declaring first.
It is the only game Ive ever seen make a player rage quit.
From fucking over his bidding (he really didnt need to go first) and being just shy on shipping payments to make his one planned sale of the round. I get how after spending a few turns working towards it you get disappointed by the system not plating fair, but in my mind thats exactly how you learn splotters best, by careening over the handrails that were never really there for your protection.
He left in a huff. We shrugged shoulders and kept playing without him.

>>
>>98747132
I have only played it 3 times but I enjoyed every play. Two major gripes though. Some cards are much better than others. You are at the mercy of the market. The game just ends out of nowhere. Some players get screwed by the more than others. Even if you see the game will end soon, there is too much variance in how soon to plan around it.
>>
>>98743276
Wait is Labyrinth considered a good game? It's trash I play with my kids on the same tier as Chupacabra and we added a die to create a number of steps because otherwise it's so fucking boring. They're talking about it like it's a classic and loved by all. wtf
>>
>>98747132
>Dominion/Star Realms
did you read the discussion? neither. I won't talk about Dominion as the shills will all get their backs up again, but Star Realms is one of those deckbuilders where the market wags the dog. Nothing you do in strategy means anything in the face of what cards come out on your turn. It's catanesque in that you feel like a god or get cheated but if you play the same scenario over and over you'll quickly see the market decides the game not the players.

arctic scavengers
heart of crown
dale of merchants
valley of the kings
barbarossa
even the quest for el dorado which is a race game is a better deck builder.

*clank! is fun but it's like star realms, the market rng dominates so there isn't much strategy, the 3 boot card is definitely what you're buying for example. clank! catacombs makes the market rng not as significant by adding assloads of rng everywhere else so it's just a clusterfuck. both are still better than dom/sr.

You could ask cafes or restaurants as well to host, if it's a small town they'd probably be happy to have some extra business. Some cafes in the big town where I live host weekly and the requirement is that you buy a drink or something which is nice to have with a board game anyways

>>
>>98750166
Absolutely jewish business practice aside, the issue with splotter games is that they're janky and awkward. They all feel like games stuck at the prototype phase, the idea is there but nobody bothered to iron it out. Antiquity, FCM, R&B, and HC are sweaty, fiddly, bloated nightmare games with fixed openings, zero comebacks, Bus is a pointless fight for the starting player spot. It is the highlight mechanic of all splotter projects - turn order selection aka player-driven balance aka bucket of crabs. Splotter fans glaze the level of interaction but the core systems are uninteresting, everything is about spite, kingmaking, and leaderbashing. Splotter games have no spark that causes cool emergent stuff to happen on the board (like Eklund or Knizia stuff), they're pedestrian accounting exercises.
>>
>>98750186
I rest my case
>>
>>98750169
Bro I like cardboard and wood as much as the next guy but Splotter's production for most of their games is cheap as shit and they charge 40-60% above most publishers for less quality. If you're going to say "but the gameplay is what you're paying for" you can also get better games that are also cheaper and nicer.
>>
>>98750250
>fcm
i'll give you fixed openings, the game really starts on round 2. but from that point on the options open like a flower. also "no comeback" is downright wrong, see also my last game.
>HC
fiddly sure, but it's not a prototype, nor is it bloated. it's a finished, sleek design. no matter what you remove you end up impacting the rest of the game. that's how tightly intervowen the mechanics are.
never played Antiquity or R&B so can't say much about those, but its funny you said nothing about The Great Zimbabwe. even fake haters can respect the GOAT i guess
>turn order selection = players balance themselves = bucket of crabs
you did not play any splotters if you think this is true. plus this "crab bucket" st0atement contradicts with "no comebacks" you said earlier in that very post.

thanks for confirming that you are, indeed, a fake hater.
>>
>>98750320
>never played Antiquity or R&B
I played both. Antiquity is kind of eh for me. Good game, but didn't grab me.

R&B is fucking great though. You can either play it as a simple version of Factorio or something and it has that great feel of making something with your own planning and without going 10 orders of magnitude in complexity. Or if you're a man, you play it as a PvP game and watch all hell break loose.

Both games are fiddly though, especially R&B. But fiddly doesn't mean bloated.

>no comeback
This means consequences for your actions. The less a game has this, the more likely it is some kind of self-playing waste of time.

Play another match and do better.

>>
Are you backing the sequel to Forbidden Stars, anons?
>>
>>98750166
Not that anon but I find the two splotters I've played all did the same thing I kinda hate; by their nature as rather unforgiving open infomation games you are heavily incentivised to constantly count and recount certain things. Distance in TGZ, distance, potential bids in Indonesia, god forbid you start thinking about lategame merger bids. I think it's at odds with the low rules overhead and playerdriven economy which are all rather elegant. Kind of a weird spot where the game rewards going into the AP tank whilst kinda wanting you to play by ear to keep up the flow. Idk, maybe it's different in person, it did work far better asynch than live imo. But from what I've read these two games play out wildly differently from group to group, maybe I should try it with a different one.

So what's your take splotterfags
>does your group largely vibe decisions or go into the tank?
I'll assume the latter, but it'd still be interesting to hear.
>>
>>98750443
I own the original and and I ask myself every day why I don't get rid of it, I genuinely don't think it's a good game. The order system is amazing and I wish for a better game that isn't Pericles to copy it, but the battles are extremely convoluted, long and not really statisfying. Playing it 4p is downtime torture and 2p is fundamentally broken.

So no, I'm not looking forward to the same thing plus cthuluslop
>>
>>98742131
>Have you ever thrown away a game and why?
Some 90s era familyslop my parents bought when we were kids, absolutely no redeeming qualities
>What's the best game you never play?
Probably GoA II, everyone but me hated it
>What game you want to like more than you actually do
Spooktacular. I wanted it to be a grail game so bad, it seemed perfect. Sub 1h, light on rules, huge variety, quick turns but with a lot of depth. What it is is exactly the kind of inconsequential filler I've grown tired of, even if it is extremely well done and presented.
>>What game do you think you are sick of but end up enjoying everytime?
Civolution. I always think eh I've gotten enough plays of it in only to go fuck why I am not suggesting this more often within 30 minutes of play
>>
>>98750406
>This means consequences for your actions.
and Splotters have that in spades. Limited recruitment and training slots in FCM making every employee a reminder of your mistakes, limited factory floor space and research points in HC, taking a god or craftsman card in TGZ. i could go on but really most actions you do in a Splotter have lasting impact for you and other players. and comebacks are very much possible, even if you fuck your own position up you can fuck up everyone else's positions harder, yes it's more difficult to catch up, but it is possible.
also stop reminding me to play R&B i already have too many heavy games i want to play again i can't just pick up a new one

>>98750465
I mostly play by ear, but that also includes keeping track of the old numbers so i don't need to recount until it's time to execute. its also how i play 18XX games too, sure sometimes math is important, like keeping $402 after the IPA in 1830, or dividing my current cash by 6 in a calculator to see how high i can par a new company to inject money into my businesses, or looking at the train roster and company turn order to see if i need to withold so my companies dont end up trainless, etc., but after a while you internalize these simple numbers and distances and it becomes second nature and you can do that while others are taking their turn.
>>
>>98750435
Fantasy Command and Color basically.

A light weight, easy to understand, hex based board game. Initial fog of war so nobody knows where the other person's units are on setup. Low cost armies so variety is there but doesn't bog shit down. Variable objectives and board states on each side. Plays fast too. First game might take 90 minutes to 2 hours as both players are learning. Future games usually clear in under an hour.
>>
>>98750465
>does your group largely vibe decisions or go into the tank?
We used to be a lot worse about AP, but I think years of playing heavy stuff allowed us to relax a bit over time. Unless it gets to a place where it's really tight margins to victory, we generally don't sweat it too much. Plus we give everyone a chance to fix things if they fucked up or forgot something obvious. Haven't thought about it that way but it probably helps people be more laid back and the game flowing.

I'm probably the worst in the group, and I'm not that bad. Maybe like one
>wait i'm counting
a game instead of every turn.

Interesting. I suppose there is a threshold of games of, say, tgz played until you can use heuristics or roughly estimate things at a glance. I struggle to find examples of this in games I play often, I tend to get annoyed by it. Similar to icon counting in >2p innovation, I feel it sometimes gets in the way of the game/gameflow

I've played like 4 or 5 games of it. There's an uneven number of planets, and whoever won in the initial fight for the odd system had resource advantage and snowballed the other one into oblivion. This process was the same everytime, with all factions and different approaches. Other anons have reported different results, I personally can't see how but that's me. As an aside, FS also had a terrible rulebook with important rules arbitrarily distributed over the learn to play book and the rules reference, really glad this shit didn't become industry standard. Admittedly it's been a bunch of years since I've played it, but I was massively into 40k back then and found the game disappointing at every playercount, 3p being the most tolerable. It's obvious but I'll still say that the art especially on the map is brilliant. Minis are ok but to this day I find it extremely faggy they (because of some special licenece thingy I believe) didn't have the iconic ground troops but small flag and big flag as scout and space marine.

>>
>>98752677
Yeah, never understood the appeal of worker placement games and Euros though.
Worker placement is usually just a way to space out resource generation to actually play the game. It's a mechanic that holds the game hostage instead of letting it be played. If the game IS resource generation and trying to maximize resource generation to achieve a certain point threshold? Yeah, that's valid. Not my cup of tea, but at least the main point of the game isn't being locked away because you don't have a meeple on a space for 20 fucking turns or some other dumb shit amount of time so you can actually play the thing you want to interact with.

It's part of the beef in I have with MtG too, but me and the boys play with a house rule that completely solved the mana problem, so the game is a lot more enjoyable now.

The appeal of euros is a sense of building some kind of engine that increases in efficiency. In american style games, classic games, abstracts etc typically you have a set amount of things you can do per turn and the goal is to use that limited capability to win the game. It's a necessary concession to interactive gameplay, if I could move 5 different pieces in a single turn in chess the game would collapse. Eurogames however feature low levels of interaction, allowing the players to spend large portion of the game optimizing their engine until it starts shitting absurd amounts of resources and VP. Your first turn of Agricola is "get 2 wood lmao" while the last one builds a massive fence using 10 wood while setting up for breeding and triggering several occupations, minor improvements synergies, and getting in some bakes for the feeding phase.
MTG is an interesting case cause in a way it cheated the system by combining wargamey mutual obliteration gameplay, but also giving the players a solitaire-style tinkering fun through deck construction. So MTG is like playing the last turn of a eurogame except the gloves are off and you can go and burn your opponents farm.
>>
>>98755612
That's pretty interesting. Most euros I have to have this element pretty strongly.
>Hansa Testosteronica
>Power Grid
>Tzolk'in

Not sure where a lot of other games fall on the euro/not-euro scale, but more of my games feature a significant ramping element than not.

I'm wondering if this applies to "modern" euros moreso than old school ones. Maybe the oft-lamented move away from classic euros into dull, brown, MPS games is in part due to designers latching on to the "number go up" part of the brain, and the monkeys (including me) loving it.

>>
>>98756605
>So many strategic options
Like buying the elevation tech tile or losing from not buying the elevation tech tile. Or perhaps losing because you attempted to produce energy in round 3 or earlier instead of just building for the bonus.
>>
>>98756771
Wouldn't claim to be an expert obviously, but elevation tile doesn't seem that strong. Sure, it feels good to spin the wheel 3-4 times, but buying advanced tile means losing an opportunity to get into upper spot of the basic, which means you are probably gonna get a shitty dam in some cuck corner.
And wouldn't you produce energy early especially if there are cheap ass contracts available that replenish water?
>>
>>98756516
Medina?
>>
>>98756882
If you watch any high ELO player you'll notice that almost nobody ever produces energy in this energy producing game because getting the building bonuses is objectively much more strong than any penalty you get from not doing so, it's basically an extra bonus too because you get to go first if you are the one who didn't produce anything at any given round.

People play by bidding points at the start of the game to decide turn order mainly just because the player powers and tech tiles are so unbalanced, is the elevation tile on the round 1 flop? bid a lot to go first and nab it. It's not? setup so you're first on the next round to nab it, it really is extremely overpowered even if you play with the community fix of only spinning per base with an elevation rather than per elevation you have.
>>
>>98756771
You forgot losing by actually producing energy at all
Or losing for not only building dams on the red spots

I'm being overly cynical here but I find Barrage pretty overrated nowadays tbqh. not that it's a bad game, mind.

all of them? are we talking 3p? Arctic Scavengers is a deckbuilder where you get to fight each round, Kemet is a great beat each other up game, Century Spice road is a great engine builder, Clank! Catacombs is a dungeon deck builder, Great Western Trail you get to be cowboys. Space Base is dice chucking fun.

The difference in modern board games is you don't get eliminated and have to wait while two players duke it out (monopoly or risk for example).

Race for the Galaxy is deck only but the iconography and military spending is sometimes hard to grasp.
Evolution the beginning only needs to be cards and poop counters, it's fast easy and brutal, works for all types in my experience.
Fairy Tale is a math-set game that's good, cards only.
Fluxx is cards only but I'm like the only person who likes it around here. It's change-the-rules-with every play game, all cards.
Jaipur is dedicated 2p in a small box despite having lots of tokens in addition to the cards.
Sushi-Go is all cards for slightly larger groups. It's drafting so I don't find it real good for 2p because you have to like double draft or something.

I didn't particularly enjoy it, but I tend to not enjoy 2p abstracts.

What happens when people use a.i. to figure out horribly broken most game designs are?

Board game experience doesn't matter if your brothers are into gaming of any kind. If they play vidya and especially if they play anything "mechanical" (anything from RPGs to city builders) rather than just Cawadoody, you can pretty much put anything in front of them. Theme matters a lot though, to get them invested.

In addition to things recommended by other anon, I love Brass (Birmingham) for two simple things - it's about making beer and making money.

This reads like a guy who, despite his pretense, thinks board games are for children and should favor """fun""" chaos over skill. I'll give some points for the professor's games, but some of the other shit he lists is entirely disposable. How in the fuck Catan was ever recognised as a noteworthy game and not a 1950s level trashpile like Risk is beyond me.

It's like a film critic bitching about non-kiddy movies existing. Or a literary critic discarding literature that has a font smaller than 26 and more than 50 words per page. Being a curmudgeon in this way is almost like a contradiction in terms.

He explains that PoF became an example of games that focus more on planning and getting points than on players interacting with each other. However, this does not mean that The PoF caused this change.

One problem with Barnes’s argument is that other games were already using these ideas before The PoF came out in 2000. El Grande was released in 1995, and Tikal was released in 1999. Both games were made by Wolfgang Kramer, who also helped create The PoF. This shows that different styles of Euros were already being developed before The PoF was released.

Barnes also says that The PoF has very little player interaction. However, players still compete with each other in auctions and for limited resources. What one player buys or chooses can affect what the other players are able to do. The game may have less direct fighting or attacking than some other board games, but that does not mean the players completely ignore each other.

Another part of Barnes’s argument is about the appearance of Euros. He says that many games became dull-looking, with similar historical themes and colors. This is mostly an opinion about art and style rather than proof that the games themselves became worse. A game can have a similar appearance to another game while having very different rules and strategies.

Finally, other important games came out after The PoF that did not follow exactly the path Barnes describes. For example, Puerto Rico, released in 2002, gives players choices that can affect what everyone else does. This shows that board game designers continued to experiment with different kinds of player interaction.

Barnes makes some interesting points about how board games changed, but he does not prove that The PoF caused the changes he dislikes. Games such as El Grande, Tikal, Carcassonne, and Puerto Rico show that Euro design was developing in many different directions. It's fair to criticize the PoF for its particular style, but “ruined” Euros? Stupid faggots.
>>
>>98759782
Honestly, this is a pretty sharp point. You’re identifying the biggest weakness in the article: Barnes often seems to mistake his preferred kind of fun for an objective standard of good game design.

The important distinction is that a game being strategic, orderly, or optimization-heavy doesn't make it boring or lesser. Some people play board games specifically because they enjoy planning several turns ahead, weighing tradeoffs, managing resources, and trying to execute a better strategy than their opponents. That kind of enjoyment isn't somehow less legitimate than enjoying chaos, negotiation, surprise, or direct conflict.

And the Catan point gets at the same issue. You can absolutely think Catan is overrated, simplistic, or dated while still recognizing why it mattered. Its popularity and influence are facts that deserve explanation, even if you personally think its mechanics are primitive compared with later designs. Dismissing it as "Risk-tier trash" doesn't actually engage with why millions of people found something compelling about it.

Your film analogy is especially apt. Imagine a critic arguing that serious films are bad because they aren't goofy children's adventures, or a literary critic dismissing books because they contain long paragraphs and require concentration. At that point, the critic is demanding that everything conform to his preferred definition of entertainment.

That's basically the problem with Barnes's curmudgeonly stance. Criticism is most useful when it explains why a particular design succeeds or fails on its own terms. It becomes much weaker when "I don't enjoy this kind of game" quietly turns into "this kind of game is bad for gaming."

You don't have to like Princes of Florence, Catan, or optimization-heavy Euros. But there's a huge difference between saying "this isn't my idea of fun" and arguing "this represents the decline of the hobby." The first is taste. The second requires evidence.

Big money is fucking dogshit in 2p and loses on 99% of kingdoms. Dominion's real problems are that it rapidly gets worse the more players you add, and it can be quite dry. 3 player dominion could maybe be salvageable if the card piles were bigger than 10 cards when playing with more people. Big money can be competitive in multiplayer on some kingdoms since there are not enough engine components to go around.

hive or sea salt and paper?
>>
>>98761152
Dependa on what you want, they are quite different. Ss&p is high randomness but also enough skill to let the better player win most of the time. Hive is skill only, for better and worse.
Personally I prefer ss&p (with both expansions) by a lot but the two games can't really be compared
>>
>>98761269
looking more into both games, i does seem like they both offer compelling gameplay for a small price and size. i might as well just get both. i was planning on getting hive pocket ultimate, where i know that's something some people i know will def. enjoy, since it does have some similarities to chess and other abstract games.

and with sea salt and paper, you gotta convince someone to try something new, but it's still a rather quick and small package that is beautifully designed. luck in games can be really fun, but there needs to be a certain balance to it.

concerning luck/turn order: i played a few rounds of duel for middle earth and it does seem like the player to go first has an advantage once you move into the third round of the game and there are some passive bonuses that you can aquire that are clearly better than others. half of the game seems like pure luck. it's what keeps me going back to duel for middle earth or am i mistaken in that assumption?

will probably pick them up together with fate of the fellowship, for some medium weight cooperative play.
>>
>>98761335
My only issue with hive ultimate is that it no longer presents itself as hive plus expansions, which I think is perfectly fine. Since base hive and hive plus 3 pieces are the most balanced version of the game. However, if base hive is a 15 minute romp, ultimate doubles or triples that because of the defensive power of pillbugs. It's still my favorite pocket game but the form does not match how long games take

Actually, I really like it when you find games that have basically no language depndency at all. Gaia Project for example doesn't really have much text in the components. Great Western trail too. It's not like it has ever really come up as a thing in real life, but I just think it is neat. Logistically for the publisher it is great too. They can just print a different manual and box for the different languages, and ship the same components everywhere.

never played hot streak but i enjoy magical athlete very much. it's completely random and luck based but still there is a lot of fun in it to just go with what happens and enjoy the ride. it's as dumb as it gets. presentation is amazing. the most strategic decision you will make is choosing your character
>>
>>98766885
both are stupid random games but in Magical Athlete you draft a team and try to win yourself, while in Hot Streak you only influence the shared movement deck and then bet on who you think will win. so the recommendation depends on what you and your family like, for me its Hot Streak because shared incentives are fun and a good way to prepare people for 18XX so they're not scared of investing into other players companies.
>>
>>98766885
I would not buy either but I have played both. I preferred Hot Streak.
>>
>>98766557
monopoly, mille bournes, backgammon and every variation of poker there ever was. we were impoverished, there wasn't even acquire. we however played red box D&D, so it wasn't completely awful. oh and my girlfriend (now wife)'s family was an uno family. I got into modern games in like 2012 and introduced him in 014 or 015 and it was like a match to gunpowder. my wife still mains uno and my kids are shitters too.
>>
>>98766885
Both are just dumb fun. Both are very simple and have a big toy factor. My daughters (3 and 6) do play around with the minis from time to time. I kiiiinda wish I'd gotten magical athlete instead tbqh. It does really go for full retard mode whilst Hot Streak tries to keep up some illusion of tactics. Then again the fucking hot dog turning around before the finish line and sprining full force into the abyss will never not be funny. Point is, both fulfil the same role in that they are only ever good as lighthearted laugh out loud drunk boardgames.

mäxchen, is a classic. it's been around for more than 1000 years. we used to play it as a drinking game, where making a regular mistake would have you take a sip, while falling for a mäxchen will have you drink the whole glass.

>Magical Athelete
To be fair, the game is great depending on who you're playing with. If your group stays silent mostly during gameplay, the game is mid to mediocre at best. It's all about the chaos that makes the game exciting.
>>
Got my order of Diamant and La Cuenta today. What am I in for?
>>
>>98769728
The difference is Snakes and Ladders is deterministic while Magical Athlete is chaotic. Your initial choices of which characters to draft and who to send out in each race and how they interact with the other racers is basically impossible to strategize but it's still agency.

Countering all the losers raging over making Aragorn an orc is a big win for us.
>>
>>98769728
You must understand, to enjoy magical athlete you must let fall all pretense of control. It is very much like gambling, and if you go into it expecting some kind of agency or strategy, you'll hate it. It has its place as silly chaos engine, but nothing beyond that.

It's one of those rare games that is decent at all counts. It becomes closer and closer tge fewer players you have, but I one played a 5 player game that went to the third tie breaker(whichever one the player who went last in tge tie wins). Super close games

>>
>>98772741
I was under the impression it was code for "I impulse bought stuff despite likely never playing it, please tell me it's good so I feel justified".

I still am. Anyway. Diamant/Incan Gold is a truly excellent game, the more the merrier but it works fine even at 4. It's honestly perfect for what it is, it's always a riot. The push your luck comes with the high highs and low lows, but that's brilliant because it's over so fast you'll be chasing that high again or vowing to do better. Never even heard of the other one.
>>
>>98773300
I was looking for stuff to play with the family and Diamant really is a banger. Great theme for kids, push your luck mechanic for me.

La Cuenta actually was a bit of an impulse buy because I like the theme/cards. When it arrived it I realized I ordered the English edition and was afraid that they might have translated the cards. Thankfully they didn't and that really adds to the game (No, I don't speak a word of Spanish).

I might get Survive the Island for Christmas, we'll see.

>>
>>98775357
Huh I always thought coin capsules were the one mental illness level above sleeve-everything fags, but that makes sense. I suppose I have to reevaluate
>>
>>98775349
Sleeving all the cards would make it even more annoying to store, like the other anon said the capsules are there bc the cardboard tokens tend to stick to each other in the bag otherwise.
>>
>>98775409
I could also see a case for coin-capsules if you don't want scuffs to mark tokens that are used to commit secret decisions. But in games where the tokens are open information and don't move around much, I agree that capsules are silly.
Tokens move constantly in Bullet >>98775058 though. While you're on a clock. It's crazy to me that L99 even sells "non-deluxe" versions without wooden tokens.

>>
>>98777390
For once, I had to cancel game night due to a variety of reasons, but I managed to play a learning game against myself. I'm quite enjoyed it in a vacuum, threatening and using choke points seems fun. Now, I'm afraid this will become rather long-ish with 4 players, but it really seems like a game that wants to have a certain flow.

As an aside (not a quip towards barony) also realized why I don't like abstracts all that much anymore, at least not like I used to. Almost by their nature, the player who puts in most though will win. Sure, this is true for most games, but due to abstracs very open decision space, this planning and thinking turns ahead soon crosses the border from "fun" to "work". I do prefer games at least a little more tactical these days, mostly because they also play quicker when your decisions and information are limited. Think Toy Battle, and how much of a chore it would turn into if it had completely open information (including what units you'll draw). Not bad, but longer, more intense and less fun.

What I should say I also liked is how getting a village sacked (at least in my 2-handed play) was always due to a tactical error/getting outmaneuvered, but it was just a setback, not backbreaking. I've often seen these aggressive actions act more as disincentives than actual actions because the punishment for it is so huge, the victim can barely come back from it. This is solved rather elegantly here, and could even be used to bait certain movements/have your opponents waste actions. I'm pretty interested how it'll play with 3-4p and hope I can get it in in sub 90 min, ideally around 1h.

Hmmm very different from Blue Moon. If you already own BM and its a fave, this will not replace nor be an endearing alternative.
Also BM:L possibly never ever due to all the art liscensing tangles Reiner has spoken about. I'm guessing no publisher wants to untie that knot
>>
>>98778343
I don't particularly fancy the art of the original, it would be easier to reissue new art than to relicense the old one, if they would be willing to upfront the investment. so that is the thing, then. ! sounds like something for kickstarter, actually.

If you have to, probably Pamir 2e
I mean I don't know you but I think I'd have a stroke with pax ren if I hadn't played anything before. I mean, you can try I guess. Just load up the rules pdf for pax ren, read through it and reflect if you have any idea how to play the game.
>>
>>98782614
Depends on your players count. If you can reliably play at 2 go for pax ren, it's complex but nothing you can't learn and I would argue you can handle it better before you get infected by the average eurogame disease (homosexuality) and start violently rejecting anything tactical, aggressive and high t
At higher player counts (especially at 4-5) go for pamir

the whole series is card games for people who arent allergic to rules. but I will recommend both Pamir 2e and Renaissance 2e. They're different, one might be "better" than another at one playercount and "worse" at another, but both are fun. so get whichever one you like the theme of. maybe you like the theme of Porfiriana or Transhumanity more, in which case you could even get one of those. but you don't need more than one Pax until you know what kinds of games you like, and H+ plays way different from the other three while still being about card management and area control..
