Hard questions to answer because I don't play themeless games and I don't play light games. So pretty much everything is thematically integrated well enough that I wouldn't wanna change it.

The only thing that comes to mind is Hansa Teutonica. It's not even that I don't like the theme. I like dull stuff just fine. But the thematic integration of the game is so tenuous it doesn't feel like it has anything to do with trade at all, you're just pushing cubes around to get VPs.

I have played hundreds of games and that one is still my favorite. It always offers a new puzzle and replayability is therefore through the roof. Plays well on all player counts, and solo especially. Setup and tear down is very quick. Dice factor can be somewhat mitigated by good, strategic play (unless you have a very unlucky streak of course).

I think the best tables for board games are round, it always sucks when people are further away from the board than others
>What would be your ideal gaming spot be like?
Cabins are complete kino board game environments, especially if it's a spooky game. Preferably getting a blowjob under the table while I play shitty moves in the current game
>What would be your ideal table size?
Enough to comfortably sit 6 people. You can fit maybe one or more, but I don't usually play with more than 6

Tbf I understand why boardgames are a nice hobby in my country when most of the enthusiasts are a bunch of overweight autistic men with debatable hygiene standards. I bet I could grow my local boardgaming club numbers tenfold if only I managed to get everyone in a gym 3 times a week

I actually own it and truly don't care for it.
>>
It's just ok. I was hoping there would be more 18xx influence to it since it was billed as blending that and cube rails but it's just a cube rails game. The ship trashing mechanic isn't that big of a deal during the game because ships really don't cost that much so and it's only a $3 penalty on your stock price at the end of the game if you can't cover the cost of a new ship. I do like the alien agreement mechanism but you can really just forego that if you don't need the extra cash and don't want to give a dividend to other players holding your company. It's a perfectly playable cube rails game but still not better than Westward Rails.
>>
>>98789727
Damn. It did seem rather unique in the cube railsesque genre. Ah I'll see when I get it. The autistic planets have aligned and I'll be getting RotLA and Stellar ventures within like a week of each other
>>
>>98789750
It's fine for a cube rails game. I still had fun with it and our group liked it. We mostly have a lot of euro gamers and it checks that euro feel. It's not transcendent of the genre like Railways was for 18xx - I think that's more of what I was hoping for. It was pretty quick - we got done with about two hours of play time and about 30 minutes of a quick teach.

Yeah I'm in the same boat, I was kiiinda looking forward to SV despite RotLA clearly looking like the better game just cause SV seemed like a way easier sell and teach. Which is mostly just the production and presentation, I suppose. Similarly, it's mainly eurogamers I'm trying this with. The game taking under 2h excluding teach in a first play is excellent though.

There's not a lot of detail about it - it's supposed to be cube rails but mining. And dwarfs.

>>98793604
It's not even worth that. Easily the worst of the series and that's not even an opinion influenced by Carmichael. It's too long, the flashpoint rounds slow the game down, and it's really just "fight the guys around you, don't worry about negotiation".

>>98794470
I had the first edition and didn't like it. It just boiled down to getting in people's way and calling the cops. Whoever had like 4 points wins. The game play in 2e looks the same but the addition of cards to do actions could save it. I don't crowdfund games but not sure I would back this one even if I did. Besides, there's going to be at least one person in every group that will have it so no reason to buy it.
>>
>>98794580
>Sucking during your first game in a splotter title
Woah that has never happened before
>>
>>98794585
Sucking how? What was I supposed to do, exactly? There are only 7 actions in the game, 2 of them are borderline worthless (passengers and buildings), one gives you negative points (seriously what could possibly cause one to use time stop?) and the only action that scores points requires you to have previously primed infrastructure which doesn't happen if you get cockblocked at the start.
>>
Is the wood version of T&E worth it, or should I go for the regular, cardboard version?
>>
>>98794600
I have never played bus so I cannot tell you what you did wrong but I assure you fucked up the counterplay
>>
>>98794600
>(seriously what could possibly cause one to use time stop?)
The main reason is to dissuade people with better opportunities from dumping markers on Vrrooomm! If they dump the markers anyway (or you chose the clock after they committed to Vrrooomm!) you pause time to punish them. If they back off and leave points on the table you can choose to not pause time, since they've already given up on scoring.
You might also put a marker on the clock, with no intention of pausing time, so that you can safely do a large amount of Vrrooomm!
If people have been pausing time enough to threaten the end of the game, a player with a big enough lead might claim it to cement victory or the player to their right might to it to prevent the game form ending.
>>
>>98794629
Thats a very idealistic scenario. Stopping time does -1 to you, so in order to justify it, you must cause AT LEAST -1 to every other player to end up with zero sum. Lots of stars need to align for that. The building action does a much better job at hurting other players without penalizing you - you can surgically place them to cancel travel needs and specifically target the leader.
>>
>>98794641
You don't need a zero sum to justify it. A swing where the players in the lead don't break further away but the players in the back get closer to you can still be worthwhile.
>>
>>98794580
I never played Bus 3rd player should have taken 1st place or nobody, I can't imagine it's viable to use your 1st place or 2nd place action to take first that early.
>>
>>98794498
Oh the game is amazing, the theme is superb etc.
The thing is, you play it 2-3 times and realize there's precious little room for skill. I don't want it to be a heavy, super deep game, but it really felt like it largely plays itself. Which is a shame because it's so damn cool and full of ideas.

Is Xia worth playing with its expansions? I remember being interested in this game years ago, but then I heard it was nothing but a dumb rollfest that goes on way too long.
>>
>>98794580
>buildings and passengers are dumb
buildings and passengers are how you earn victory points. use your time to shape the map and make it as horrible for opponents to play on as you can. then take the time piece action, and when it's time to resolve it consider which outcome will earn your opps the most points, and do the opposite of that. or better yet take the timepiece early to keep your options open.

also you had earlier turn order in round 2, and someone had 2 buses, meaning even getting second dibs on any of the placement actions would've been productive. not the best, but if you wanted the best you'd take 1st turn order in round 2 as your first action.

just tell them you don't like Wingspan and that you think other games have better gameplay, even if there's less visuals, plus if they can handle wingspan they can handle all other games, they know how to do N actions per turn, they know how to manage a tableau, they know how to roll dice, they know how to work with both a central something and a personal something. most games don't go further than that.

Bros I had another breakthrough for my design. Literally just one more remaining until I have no excuse to not start prototyping.

Would recommend playing shit games you'd hate just to pick up design ideas. In this case Tag Team.
>>
>>98800350
you dont need to play them to pick up design ideas, just knowing how they work. but theoretical knowledge is always different from real experience anyway. generally with any artistic process, it also helps setting yourself problems to work around or coming from a place where you think something is flawed and use that as a basis for your design. e.g. a lot of people have problems with how MTG handles mana as a resource, so now there have been several card games that take that as a basis and try to find a solution for this.

Does anyone here play Arcs consistently or decently often? Is it any good?
>>
>>98800725
more like Acks
>>
>>98800725
i played it a few times. try googling arcs and reddit, there is lots of threads on that game. it's very divisive.

it really depends on what you like in a game. some anon once told me that it feels like a knife fight in a phone booth, i think that's pretty accurate. everything is constantly deteriorating, a single fight can destroy many of your ships and there is barely a way to repair or recover anything. cour cards are really useful, but not necessarily easy to get. cards you play often times wont let you do what you want, unless you have initiative. if you have shit cards, there is a good chance that you wont get it a lot of times. your shitty cards can be compensated for by using your resources like fuel, ammo, etc. which makes the prelude phase super annoying imo. aftere a single turn, the board state can change completely, so whatever plan you had, is now gone. to get the most out of your shitty hand you use the prelude phase that lets you spend resources, which is a pain in the ass imo. you have to do everything in the right order, which requires a lot of mental energy thinking everything through and executing it while you have other people talking in the background. it also means that everyone's turns usually take quite long.

i guess i bounced off of it.
>>
>>98800725
>Does anyone here play Arcs consistently
That's me.
It's wherle's best game, and that might mean a lot to you or barely anything.
Base game is good, but you can get fucked by card draw no matter how much wherlefags tell you "every hand is bad". Campaign is just fucked. It's "find your course trough heaps of bullshit that keeps being added to this game" and the SHIT ASS color scheme means that you can't tell cards at a glance, which is criminal
>>
>>98800876
Uh so uh is it good? What else do you and your group play?
>>
>>98800680
>>98800684
That's fair, I shouldn't have gone to the extreme. Point was, you can design games without prior experience. They likely will be shit, but I have come to a point where I actually enjoy weird shit and experimental designs. But I do believe the more you are used to modern design sensibilities, the more you conciously or subconciously follow them. Like how nowadays a method of approach to imbalances in the design seems to be to soften all the edges, but edges can be exactly what's fun. Eg.:
>Today I will start my game with 6 blind auctions
Absolute madman design and I love it
>>
>>98801096
i get what you are saying, and i respect that, i think the problem with board games in this regard is that they are highly interactive, mass products that usually require at least 2 or more people to play (i know solo board games exist). so some modern design elements like people not being eliminated and still having a chance to catch up or at least participate, make a lot of sense and i barely see a reason why you wouldnt do this in your game design.

i think this is also why wehrle is so divisive. he makes mean games. arcs is also very ambitious, or oath as well. those are not easy games, but board game geeks go crazy over them. shut up and sit down did a really good video on john company and how it is a piece of art. highly recommended watch.

speaking of art, if you are into visual art, there is a similar discussion about technique. people who are not into art will often times really like technical artworks, for someone who hasnt seen a lot, it's easily impressive. if you are into art, then you may realize that those kind of works usually lack any sort of creativity or originality, that is not to say that technical art cant be good. it very much can, but that's just one small part of the whole thing. art brute e.g. is amazing, even though many people could do something like that on a technical level.

I was thinking of wehrle as well. I didn't mention him because he's such an anomaly and would actually be a good argument against the point I wanted to make.
I always find his work very intriguing and I do check out all his stuff....And I always, always really hate it, precisely because it does ignore a lot of modern design "rules". I find his games are brilliant from a distance, and absolutely fall apart mechanically under closer inspection (with the exception of PP2e). Oath would have been so much better if he took a more modern approach to "bite sized" turns.

I was thinking more along the lines of christophe boelinger, the things I played by him (dungeon twister, rise&fall, archipelago) didn't do away with design lessons learned in the last 2-3 decades yet he gives them relatively wild spins and breaks established rules when appropriate. Also of course Holland trannys designs which range from janky fun to full on experimental.

How old is this post? I'm pretty sure Cole himself has said on the matter of runaway leaders that players should "balance" the game. I suppose he imagines players should just silently mald that someone else is not bashing the leader?

What an incoherent man. It would all be explained if it's just various copes he's running through but underneath it all understands that Root is a busted design that only gained popularity due to accessible asymmetry and cute animals.

The only thing Troyes needs is some better iconography, or text on the cards clarifying what they do. The base game isn't bad, but the expansion has me running to a reference sheet half the time when we flip the cards for the next age
>>
>>98805849
Yeah the sucker is huge, Gloomhaven size
And I kind of get their dilemma - keep it as an expansion and now you're running into the classic
>who's going to buy an expansion the same price of the base game?
So they said fuck it and went all out
My main concern, besides the price, is the new island system. Afaik, it's still based on the same premise of "grab them based on your current goals and needs" and that was kind of a pain glancing over over 4/8 tiles. Now you're given what, 16? And tasked to memorize the island, actions, unique pieces, unique buildings, AND unique occupations? It's cool modularity, but I'm not autistic enough for that.
(Side note - it still drives me crazy there's no official ruling on # island tiles you should have out. For any of the player counts or for the expansions.)

A friend brought over Andromeda's Edge yesterday. Apparently it's basically a reskin of something called Dwellings of Eldervale, which a couple of the guys have played.

The game is... Okay, maybe? But I kind of hated it. Right off the bat, the power differential between the factions is insane. On top of that, the random ship upgrades range from trash to great, a fact made worse by the potential synergies with faction powers. One guy took the faction that gets free cards and supremacy advancements, and got a transport upgrade that turns it into a fighter. Epic. He won the game despite multiple massive fuck-ups based on this alone.

The game itself is a mildly interesting twist on worker placement in that it's basically reverse worker placement. Most of the shit on the map is next to worthless, and you get more from your own board, especially later on once you get some modules. I guess it can be somewhat fun to build up a massive industry.

Not that I ever did that myself, because the modules ALSO vary massively in their utility. So when my turn rolled around all the best shit was replaced with some garbage nobody wants (most of which proceeded to stay there for the rest of the game). Random moons, random raiders, random FUCKING intrigue cards.

This is the only time you'll ever see me recommend Dunc Imperium. Play that instead of this.

Once again I'm feeling very smug and proud of my own board game purchases. Friends keep bringing over bomb after bomb. The game is so badly outclassed by Eclipse it's not even funny.

Side note, I'm really starting to hate games with significant setup. This card type, that weird mini card type you can't riffle shuffle, bazillion different token types, massive ugly pointless cardboard pieces. All in the service of some fucking stupid shit that is not engaging on any level.

This is part of the reason why HF4A was such a breath of fresh air for me. It's a really long, complex game, and you can start playing it in literally 1 minute.
>>
>>98810318
>Side note, I'm really starting to hate games with significant setup.
I blame tabletop simulator for this.
>>
Played this last night. It's decent. It's not as heavy as I thought it was going to be and kind of felt a little Pax-y with the personae cards you can buy. Every faction has a national ambition victory condition but some of the cards grant you new conditions or little perks to hegemony. Liked that mechanic.

But man is it slow to get going. The best move out of the gate is to just focus on workshops and royal control so you have money for troops early on. Feels like a lot of resource upkeep for the first two turns. Also, the map is beautiful but is an absolute pain in the ass to play on. It's hard to pick up on the provinces and workshops when you have tons of stuff going on on the board. We played with the full player count and I don't think it would be as fun without at least 4. Not bad though - would play again.

I suppose I'll play it with the kids when they're a bit older and can actually cheat in more subtile ways.

I am beginning to understand why some people have problems with euros. Played with a few guys I haven't played much before, 4p GWT game. It lasted + 3 1/2h. My turns probably totalled around 12 min of that. Now this isn't saying everyone should play from their gut, but how thinking time doesn't necessarily correlate with success. I came in second and the other guy that played even faster won. I suppose I wouldn't get this amount of AP in the more ameritrashy games; or at least less extreme. I can now better understand how people wouldn't want to touch heavy euros if this is their regular experience with them.

>>
>>98812432
Sure, but isn't that the case with nearly all games with hidden information then? Or are you talking about accidentally cheating by using the mitigation wrong?
I found roll not bad but annoying, largely because it largely works the same thing as race, yet is much worse.

I mean this whole discussion is rhetorical, neither of us would do something like that. But I suspect this isn't directly about winning but rather something like a desire to seem smart or prove one's abilities, pathetic as that may be in a boardgame you play for joy.
Also agree that that other anons take is retarded, but why would you rather play with a cheater
>>
>>98812310
Yeah I've stopped going to local gatherings because everybody there is legitimately fucking retarded and that makes my game time be like 1/20th of any given game. Project L? Let me take 5 minute turns thinking about what to do with my 3 actions and still end up running out of pieces and having to just take level 1 pieces from the supply.
Ok let's play one of your filler games you only bought because it has a cute theme to you; of what's that? you don't even knew the rules after playing it 5 times and I have to correct you during after the game because you couldn't even bother to read the rulebook of your "it's splendor with a twist" game?
>>
>>98812698
Propolis mentioned.
>>
>>98812483
No, most games with hidden information (I.e. a card or tile color) don't provide you the option to change what it is, in the way Roll lets you easily manipulate the dice behind your screen.
>>
>>98812698
If they're slow, new to the game, or just AP-prone, I'll start trying to help them by asking what are they tying to do and telling them how to do it. If they're idiots staring at their phone I just throw things at their head and move their pieces when they're not looking.
>>
>>98812936
The obvious solution is to replace the dice with a cups of chits.

the old one with the 2019 reprint is good if and only if you have 6 total players and are not allergic to rulebooks and "do this or you fall behind so much itr's unrecoverable" type situations in the early game
DunC Imperium and its variants/expansions/etceteras are alright. Not the best deckbuilder, not the best worker placement, but has theme all over it and weaves all three together neatly.

>2019
>"do this or you fall behind so much itr's unrecoverable
Huh? Dune is possibly the most tactical/swingy game of its type while having those swings be earned. Unlike something like Arcs, where it's just "oh you got three red cards and i got zero, guess you just kill me now".

>DunC Imperium
>has theme all over it
It has pictures and names of things you've heard, but the actual thematic integration is borderline zero.
>>
>>98812455
I would also recommend the 2 (maybe 3) games >>98813551 mentioned with similar caveats as >>98813842 did.
>Dune 2019 (aka just "Dune", released in 2019)
One of the best games of its type but you really gotta have a group fit for it. It has wild swings and negotiation,- and betrayal heavy gameplay by design you need to understand that it's all calculated risks and information, fucking up a big combat might set you back half a game or more and nothing is ever safely in your control. Plus the ruleset is an absolute nightmare, one of the worst I have encountered. Not in terms of explaining the game but in its infuriating vagueness. Very thematic.
>DUNC imperium

I forgot the worst factor, we all knew the game, the slower two had played at least 4-5 games. I'm sympathetic to someone saying look I had to write a paper until 12 today and haven't slept properly can we do something light. But gwt was their explicit wish.

I think if it's done in a timely matter and absolutely no new information has been shown it's fine to allow takebacks sometimes, some people really abuse redoing things for some weird reason, insecurity or just plain autism I guess.

>>98811849
I feel like this is the cheaters paradox, where the cheater is so focused on the cheat they miss the more obvious and better play. Roll gives you so many ways to manipulate the dice that even a mediocre player should quickly just have a glut of options not matter what they roll. It's not even the best way to cheat at that game.

in heat where everyone lays down their cards for their turn and then reveal at the same time, other cars take their turn driving, now it's his turn, he realizes that he did not take the weather token into account that would affect the corner he takes, so he takes one more heat, which causes his to crash. this rule has been explained at least 2 times during the round, it was new for me as well. but he wants to change his move to something optimal, because other people played one more round of the game than him. that is already the second time that he corrected a move in this round. when i made a mistake, i just accepted the mistake and the consequences instead of redoing it. it did not make much of a difference anyway, he finished in second place, so i dont get the drama. i think part of the fun of games is making mistakes, they are just games. if you can only enjoy them if you only play in the most ideal way and only get fun out of it if you win, then that's a big issue. the chaos is part of the fun. what happens during playing is much more interesting than winning.

anyway, i refused to let him go through with it, and now he is really angry, got a wall of text today full of insults and now he never wants to play with me again. i dont really mind, i have enough people to play with.

Eh. On taverns my entire family helps make more optimal dice placement when it's obvious you should have some more beers just to advance the reputation market to kick out shitty guests and the like.
Or Hansa teutonica reminding people that the move instead of place action is available, even if they use all 3 actions to place and would very obviously get blocked by a disk before their next turn.

Or pink powers in wingspan.

I'm sure heat is very different because it's a shared board though.

My brother in law enlists every brain at the table. He thinks aloud and says things like, "well I don't want to do that because then I can't..." and "I haven't played as much so..."
Meanwhile I'm auditing everyone's turns to make sure they pay right and do the actions right and still plan for my turn.

But then he usually wins because, surprise, having 4 brains working on your turn is better then 1.
I tell myself I'm going to selfishly think only about my plans from now on but I can't help but audit. I can't turn it off.

I'm used to the action city being in the lower right, not upper left.

I'd be going for all of those lower right cities after getting 3 actions.
>>
>>98815416
I feel you. I rarely if ever play "just" on my turn. I constantly do admin, check if plays are legal, correct sums have been paid etc. You know, keeping the game running. I'm also the guy to teach a new game and with that comes added baggage, apparently. That all said, I just really enjoy boardgaming and if my own play is less than ideal it's a small price to pay to have everyone have a good time. Even though it might not be necessary 4-5 games in, I just can't really help it
>>
>>98815445
Green man got to 5 actions.

I grew up with him dealing 2nd cards, stacking the deck and cheating at monopoly. In modern board games his favorite is to have misheard the rule, or take too much and then put something else back. Just constant mistakes and misunderstandings that give him an advantage. He likes very rules complex games with lots of moving parts so the mistakes are less traceable. Then he does stuff like insist on looking at the draw bag to "assess the odds" shakes it a little then pinches the corner where most of the chits are and draws "blind". In our family game of oh hell he always deals first and always deals the highest possible trump to my mom first forcing her to bid one and inevitably leaving him free to bid zero knowing no one can beat her. Every game starts the same way with my mom getting the highest trump or a joker (trump beater in house rules). It's a little sad as his dexterity has waned and you can now see all his card manipulations but nothing stops him from doing it. Worse probably is when you catch him and he needs to undo or put something back he just uses that as another opportunity to misunderstand and put the wrong thing back or do something else "accidentally". Picking up a 5 because the symbol for money is a little yellow when it's clearly 1. Miscounting change. It's fucking exhausting and it really makes the super-autismos in his game groups apoplectic. I've literally seen a guy shaking and clutching his doll so frustrated with trying to get my dad to follow the rules that he almost couldn't speak. He'll also remember the most obscure rules when it's too his advantage. He lays out and practices all the games too so he knows the best building and whatnot, that's not really cheating per se but it's what kind of guy he is.

>>98815416
I see this a lot with the new "lol, idk what to do" players where every one of those is group think and they naturally have better turns than everyone else without even understanding the game.

Sounds like a former con artist that has never learned to actually play a game properly. Genuinely curious why you still play with him if he is that unrepentant and even let him loose on others
>>
>>98815328
Usually if I'm playing a game with people on their first or second time of the game, I'm allowing takebacks if the players haven't revealed any information, but we'll joke about it not being a legitimate win to the person. Just a little verbal poke. It's not like we're counting elo, and I understand that when you are doing a multi turn plan, and you get the order of operation mixed up slightly, it robs the player of that big enjoyment moment that will make them have a more enjoyable time.

Maybe I'm too forgiving, idk. There are also people with different mental processors.
In heat, I would probably let anyone take back something though, because the game basically has player elimination, but worse: you are forced to keep playing for the rest of the game in last place, just like a real race. And one spinout basically loses you a whole turn in an already hyper tight racing game.

>>
>>98818100
Or he did get punched in the face and found out it actually wasn't that big of a deal. Would you punch someone in the face for cheating in a board game? How heavy/long would the board game need to be?
>>
>>98817926
this removes the whole point of the heat management though if everyone could just correct their mistakes. he was already pretty far ahead when he crashed and it ended up making no difference for him, maybe it robbed him at a chance for the first place, but unlikely though. i never crashed and ended up in last place, which at that point was also pretty obvious that that's gonna happen. or maybe i did crash once, due to picking some upgrade cards that werent ideal for the weather and conditions, doesnt matter. i own my mistakes and try to learn from them. we have a strained relationship anyway, that does not help. so this stuff ends up being way too serious for just playing a game. with other people this isnt an issue at all. so i guess it is better to just not play with him again.
>>
>>98818340
>Would you punch someone in the face for cheating in a board game?
yes.
in our country there's a small folk story anecdote, and a saying born from it. The Wolf, the Hare, the Bear and the Fox one day sit down to play some cards. The Bear brings in a candelabra (it's a story from the times before electricity was widely used) and says "I will not name any names, but whoever decides to cheat, will get hit with this candelabra right accross their sly orange face!". Thus ends the story, and the saying is those final words, "[you'll get hit] right in the sly orange face", with sometimes ruder synonims for added expletive effect. As a phrase it means a warning against cheating or foul play, and an implication that we know who is(are) the suspicious one(s) in the group.

Games exist with rules, and the rules exist to draw boundaries and force players to work within those boundaries. If a cheater doesn't want to deal with the bondaries, why are they even playing at all? And why do they waste our time with their cheatly presence? A punch in the face ought to shake up and wake up their brain back into acting smart, not on autopilot.

Playing devil's advocate here, and I enjoyed your story and agree, but there could be an argument made that due to evolutionary psychology, there could be a high evolutionary advantage to pulling the wool over your fellow human's eyes. This biological drive, if learned how to do successfully, is an advantage with mate attraction and business negotiation. That what the book The Red Queen would argue for, anyways. Reading that book actually make me get into social deduction games, since according to the rules, it creates a safe space sandbox for lies, deception, and manipulation.
>>
>>98818606
>bro you dont understand, i cant control my animal urges to be a cheater! we're not in a survival situation but my raw animalistic survival swindler instinct just won't stop! my body flase-shuffles cards on its own!
if you wanna be an animal that much then fuck off to the forest.
fair point on social deduction games, their rules and boundaries allow and even encourage lies. but we weren't really talking about those games, we were talking Clank and pinching the bag so that your cubes show up less often. that's not social deduction, that's appleas and oranges compared to "yeah i won't attack you, i'll order my army here to support you there, really!".
>>
>>98818606
You cannot build a civilisation, or functioning systems in general, on lies. There's the in-group/out-group aspect, where deceiving your enemies can be advantageous, but if your society is suffused with deception on every level, it is bound to collapse sooner than later.

On the level of (standard) board games it works the same way. You play with your in-group and honesty is expected. Otherwise the game gets ruined. So keep that degenerate behavior on the periphery of board games where it is allowed.

Lying is not "optimal" for humans, because at every level of human organisation a certain level of truthseeking is required. It might be an evolved aspect of status seeking and, at a deeper level, a result of self-consciousness, but it's always been kept at a periphery and was never considered virtuous. For every guy who fakes it till he makes it in some innocuous way, there are a hundred who are active detriments to their surroundings.
>>
>>98819194
Biologically speaking in the modern age, lying about your romantic life/your accomplishments is highly advantageous for spreading your genes. In business it is highly profitable to evade taxes and steal if you can. The thing keeping us in check is that, as you said, in the past, if you were caught, you'd be excommunicated and our brains are highly aware of this. It's why some of the people in the highest echelons are highly intelligent, but highly morally bankrupt.
>>
>>98818606
It's a interesting discussion but I would argue that the framework of a game isn't the same as the rest of life. Entering a game does mean accepting a certain, silently agreed upon set of rules. That's true even for animals who play-fight and such. I would argue "No cheating" is pretty universal and intuitive and defying this is a concious act (unless you are a sociopath and/or indian).

It is beneficial rather short-term, but as you say, the problem is that it is of little consequence. If you have no moral compass to guide you, lying is very likely a low energy and relatively successful strategy.
Talking about society, I feel the problem is indeed a lack of consequences. If I slip in the 23rd hour of a 24h shift and accidentally miss something important, I can get sued. If I am to lead a goddamn country, actively tell lies and stuff my own pockets with the peoples money there is NOTHING. We should bring back a small form of mob justice I suppose

I literally quit all boardgaming for two years because of some bullshit he pulled that soured me on the whole scene, but he ignores what anybody else thinks or feels and it's just not worth saying "I won't play" so instead I focus on keeping him from poisoning my group and beating the every loving shit out of him despite his cheating and practicing games. The French used to do that with the guillotine. But I'm afraid, it is too late to do something like that with mass surveillance being normalized nowadays. monopoly diced cannot be good. sagrada is in fact not good. idk the other two but sharp shooters looks like an 80s game.

actually good dice games are roll for the galaxy and castle dice. king of tokyo at 4p.

you might also look at roll-n-write, like Corinth or Welcome To... are decent ones. I've heard good things about pretty clever and IIRC qwixx is a "better" sagrada.

Also, avoid things like "X but dice" (Castles of Burgundy Dice, Catan Dice, BANG! the dice game) their non-dice versions are exclusively better in my experience. Well not Catan and Monopoly but otherwise...

Also dice is easy to search on BGG but the roll-and-write mechanism is not. Here are two resources:

It's pretty unique and I respect the design. I still sold it because it kinda fell flat after 2-3 games. If you are at least somewhat competent in boardgames it holds little challenge and isn't nearly as chaotic as you are lead to believe. Check the cards, see if you wanna go fast or not and what the highest weapon strength you need is, plan accordingly. Suddenly there are far fewer holy shit WHAT moments, and the game is kinda built around that; a random tiny asteroid breaking off half your ship, you stranding in space without propulsion, pirates taking all your crew etc. the game is suprisingly skillbased, but with that come less and less failstates, and the game really needs everyone to fail a bit to be fun. What remains is both too mechanically weak to carry the game yet not swingy and insane enough to be a full on gambling-adjacent game.

It is, but it's the lowest form of interaction there is. Doesn't save a game from being MPS.

While technically WP is a form of drafting, it's not what people refer to generally. WP usually has a high level of predictability/repeatability in a shared board space. So (in a good game) there is more explicit consideration of what the other players are doing.

Blind drafting is especially odious. Sorry not sorry Inis, it's an action randomisation mechanism and not interaction in any form except accidentally touching your fellow autist's hand while passing the cards.

Anyway, auctions are where it's at.

Dune 2019, War for Arrakis and Dune Imperium are well known, but what about lesser talked games like Dune Conquest/Movie Dune, Arrakis Dawn of Fremen, Risk Dune? my assumption is that those games are either shit/mediocre and thus never talked about, or main Big Dune games are so good, they make those lesser games inconsequential?
My good friend who collects board games said something like: if you have 6 people, play 2019 Dune, if you have four either play movie dune or dune imperium/uprising, if you have 6+ you can either try playing dune 2019 with some different setup and treat shield wall as town after 5/6 turns or play dune betrayal if group is into light/social deduction games. if you have 2 players, play either movie dune or dune war for arrakis. he said that Risk Dune is shit and Dune dawn of fremen also shit/based on some old obscure game that didn't aged good or something like that

Seems like the vote for the next game to be played in my local game group will be Viticulture with 5 people. I guess it's the price to pay if I want to continue to have people to play with.

Anyways, the store has all the expansions and extras available. What's the absolute best way to play this so it's enjoyable and hopefully quick?

>Board: Base/Tuscany/Bordeaux
>Visitors: Base/Moors/Rhine
>House rules if any (although I doubt people will want to enact house rules when there's first-timers at the table)

You know it's not because of the drafting part that Inis is highly interactive right?
