HONOR THE DRAGON!

>>98742906Total Fedrat death!
>>98742917>in a thread whose first post is of the first davion guardsPoor taste
>>98742803>Made the masters for this helmet out of a two gallon bucket, a plastic bowel, some styrene, and some auto window track trim based on the Goons helm.I gotta make some actual 3D models for the major house helmets one of these days. I need a proper Ginyu Force pose of dudes with all the Successor State styles from 3025.
>>98742942TOTALFEDRATDEATH!
>>98743230How many Fedrats died to liberate Combine worlds that the DCMS was too weak to keep from the Smoke Jaguar?
>>98743267Not as many as needed to, nor as many as you assume. No Davion regular units defended Luthien, nor did any reclaim former Combine worlds already taken. They did all their dying in Bulldog.
>>98743267How much military hardware produced in the Combine was earmarked to provide to the Fedrats when the FedCom Civil War era was in full swing because they couldn't possibly hope to match the Lyran Alliance's industry even after decades of sharing an economy?
Which Word of Blake unit should I paint up to trigger the local gametroons?
>>98743410Any should suffice, it's a niche faction that didn't last long and is irrelevant by 3152.
>>98743283>No Davion regular units defended LuthienThat's some fun weasel words to get around several elite FedCom regiments being deployed there. You would have been better served just not mentioning Luthien.
>>98743349The thread isn't full of people shitting on the Combine in the name of the FedSuns.
>>98743439Name any that aren't a merc command. You can't, because only mercs were sent. Politics would have been shaky if Davion regulars touched down on Luthien soil.
>>98743458So you're proving that the FedSuns didn't help the DC by pointing out that the FedSuns did what they could without completely fucking the politics?Did you know that no DC units participated in Operation: Bulldog because it was technically conducted under the flag of the Second Star League?
>>98743439The forces Hanse sent to assist DCMS on Luthien consisted of the Goons and Kell Hounds, who were both working for Fedcom at the time. He didn't sent any actual Fedcom troops.
Should Hanse have allowed Luthien to fall?
>>98743534I'm sure that would have made his Steiner constituency happy.
>>98743442I'm sorry we hurt your feelings Davion-kun, we're just teasing you in good fun :(
>>98743541Lyrans hate Dracs almost as much as Fedrats do. The Sarna March should have been the Dieron March.
>>98743546I wasn't being facetious, the Lyrans would have loved to have Luthien fall. I forget the reasoning behind why Hanse chose to not let it fall.
>>98743551Scared it would let the Clans penetrate to the FedSuns. At the time, people didn't know that the goal was Terra. Hansen figured that the Jags would chew through the Combine and create a two-front war.
>>98743551Just off the top of my head, letting all the industry on Luthien fall in the hands of the Clans probably would've been insanely disastrous for the FedCom.
>>98743551
I have a couple of questions about the Pouncer FChief among them being whether or not there any other mechs with a Remote Sensor Dispenser installed in them? I stumbled on this variant while looking through the MUL because it was an extra cheap variant with a BAP.But my inner RPer screamed to me that the RSD would be the perfect tool for any aspiring scout commander during a campagin. My second question after whether or not other mechs have a RSD installed is this: Does it actually work on campaign? I imagine it would be useless for most engagements, outside maybe if you're babysitting a bunch of artillery and Arrow IV carriers to AOE the shit out of any blips that trip your perimeter defense.
The dragon is gay.
>>98743705Obvious AIslop

>>98743802If you play Instant Action there’s one scenario in there that lets you scan or complete objectives if your mech passes over the point and has an RSD. Kind of a very narrow list of mechs that benefit from that though.
What's the best way to know if something is a mold line on the minis? I keep second guessing myself on whether something is just the intended edge of a panel or an actual mold line unless it becomes very obvious from crossing what's clearly a flat panel or there's a little bit of a remnant where a piece was clearly snipped from a mold.
I need Halloween scenario ideas, as ridiculous as you like, they don't need to be canonically plausible. Please help.

How do beast mounted infantry work, are there no record sheets for them, do you have to build them yourself or something? MUL doesn't provide a record sheet for them

>>98744937The Empires Aflame book has a misjump send people from the Inner Sphere to its scenario. So, have a misjump send mercenaries who commonly work with or loyal soldiers of House Marik (or at least the Free Worlds League) into the Gothic timeline and they have to survive in a world where their profession is not recognized in ways they understand, and the people they.worked best with/were principly loyal to are a House and nation rendered extinct in that timeline.Their machines are hard to maintain because the devastation has rendered 'Mechs near extinct in the timeline, there's basically nowhere to escape because the Periphery has no law or order left in it, there's biological abominations tearing up the battlefield, and the amount of genemodding that's going on in some nations has them feel like a lot of that timeline's humans are skinwalkers.
>>98745012>Very handy thanks, the MUL could really use a "search for ability" featureTry MekBay, their search functionality is very robust. The force builder is also excellent.
>>98745170
>>98745220That game's still peak Battletech for me.
>>98745243It managed to adapt the very early depictions of the various mechs into moving 3D models surprisingly well.
>>98745263Technically they're sprites rather than 3D objects in game but the cutscenes were definitely done rather well. Really was impressive what they did.
How is this for a 6000BV dark age mercenary scout lance?Pouncer F (Commander with the near unique remote sensor dispenser and a BAP for maximum information gathering)Phoenix Hawk IIC 2 (Aka the really expensive one with 4xLRM20s)Phoenix Hawk PXH-1 (Don't talk to me or my son)Wasp WSP-3S (Or my grandson with a TAG and ECM)Achileus Battle Armor (Tag) Sqd4 (Stealth armor and a light tag on jumping battle armor? What's not to love?)Every mech jumps 150m+Has the hands and even battle armor to handle most objectives that require manipulation.BAP and ECM included for maximum electronic warfare.TAG for artillery and the PH IICDid I mention remote sensors?
>>98744937So, the idea is that mechs need a human pilot because they can't walk properly without being connected to their nervous system. Maybe a mad scientist tries to create drone mechs using the brainstems of the recently dead connected to a computer but they go out of control because they're animated by only the most bestial instincts.
>>98745012I always thought it was weird that they have the Gallant in space in its art when it doesn't have anything that makes it particularly useful in space.
>>98745220>>98745220I know it’s obviously just a poor depiction, but I like to imagine those are neurohelmets stripped down to the absolute bare essentials. They function like ass but you can turn your head
>>98745799It should be possible, but there isn't really much reason to go below "light, ergonomic helmet" for a piece of military combat equipment that goes on your head.In one of the old house books, there's a device used in a university that's basically a neurohelmet headband that uses the feedback to beam cliff notes and citation information directly into your head as you read a book. The Star League had helmets that didn't need to directly touch your head (meaning you can have a full head of hair without shaving the contact points) and weren't very bulky. And of course the clans figured out how to turn it into wafer thin implants that drive you mad.
>>98745093The TRO 3085 infantry have record sheets, including branth riders. Otherwise, use Megamek Lab. The Tariq riders from HB:MPS aren't rules legal under current construction rules.
>>98745821It raises a genuine question about a hypothetical live action show; would they actually choose to go with extremely cut-down helmets or even headsets like this because the actor contracts require a certain level of exposure? Maybe someone can argue for egghead helmets because those are typically depicted with open face and no glass.
>>98745927Ryan Gosling in the leadHe drives
>>98745927Realistically, they'd probably go for a mix of MW5 portrait picture helmets and omit the idea of mechwarrior hair shaving entirely unless it was specifically used as an in-universe fashion statement (along the lines of "mechwarriors sure are popular, people even copy the hairstyles they have to use, it would be a shame if the plot involved mech war crimes that completely soured the public's opinion" or "look at those posers, they've got neurohelmet hair even though they've never even been within 500 yards of a mech!"Buckethead is either on a comic relief character who dies early on or a cameo up on a shelf and no one wears it.
>>98745927At least some of the classic helmets have visors that can open up to show the face. And of course anything going on outside of the mech will also be sans neurohelmet.
>>98744937Protomechs with zombie pilots
>>98745927>would they actually choose to go with extremely cut-down helmets or even headsets like this because the actor contracts require a certain level of exposure? It's not a question. The answer is yes. It's the same reason that we can't usually get actors to wear helms in period pictures. An actor makes their living with their face, and the vast, VAST majority of actors are going to give a lot of pushback for anything that obscures their face in any way, especially during closeups. There's been some internal studies done in film that I've gotten to see, where obscuring an actor or actresses face on the poster or first 10 minutes of the film, leads to a statistically significant drop in revenue, which means significant drops in the earnings of everyone who has points on the box office. This is why a lot of actors have it written into their contracts that they won't wear a face-concealing helmet, or are required to have equal filming time given to "having a helmet on" vs "having a helmet off", and then have a bunch of riders. There's exceptions to every rule, of course: some actors don't give a damn as long as the movie is good. Some actors will do it if it's right for the character. And then there's some actors that insist that I have to change the fight choreography I spent 90 hours developing because the parry they're performing puts a weapon or arm in front of their face for 11 frames, and that's unacceptably blocking the camera from seeing them. It's a lot - a *LOT* - easier for everyone involved to just ignore the source material and put a glorified mic headset on the actor, or some sort of backlit bubble helmet, or else nothing at all and change the script, than it is to have to wrangle all of the egos and contract exceptions which would be required to put lore-accurate neurohelmets on all the principal cast. If you were lucky, they would compromise with a 1980s-era fighter pilot helmet. And that *IS* the best compromise you could hope for.
>>98746530>and put a glorified mic headset on the actor, or some sort of backlit bubble helmetNTA butThe recent Mechwarrior 5 games are a pretty good indicator of how they would do it. Face revealing helmet while in the mech and no helmet the rest of the time. And knowing how budgets work, the movie would be 10% mech battles and 90% out of mech scenes.Sure there would be mechs in far more scenes than that, but they would be a cheaper background thing with actors in the front.
>>98745304I don't remember the TIE fighter. Cheat code?
>>98745749Wow, that's actually a great idea.
>>98746530>caring about the opinions of actors Next you are going to tell me to ask the local prostitute her opinion on financial planning. In all seriousness if we can get Carl Urban to play Dredd and not take the helmet off everyone else can be told to shove their ego up their ass.
>>98746565Its a mystery at the moment.
First game of my Draconis Reach campaign in a bit. My mercs, an as yet unnamed company, playing against hostile mercs in the Alta Vista contract. Will post results.
>>98746032>>98746561Not arguing your points at all here (because I agree) but holy FUCK I loathe the style Piranha Games has made
>>98746689I don't like it either, but unless it's a passion project from someone who already liked the source material (basically impossible with all the licensing problems), they're going to go for the most recognizable and easy option for the visuals of basically everything. The mechs would be modern CGL style, but the clothing and human sized equipment would reference the video games, because the alternative is the RPGs which have much, much less reach.
How do you fight a Kontio? Those things just hang out of sight until they build heat, then run a million hexes up to you and then they have a 1/6 chance of instantly killing any mech. What do you do?
>>98746713>the alternative is the RPGsIf only
>>98746719If you have the option, don't give it a clean run up. It can't jump, so any terrain costs you can make it pay help. Pulse weapons and precision ammo fire before melee and if it falls over from a PSR or leg destruction, it can't melee. Thunder missiles can put a minefield directly along its best path, forcing it to spend more MP or risk losing a leg. Keeping your own TMM and terrain bonus up is important since claws don't get the -1 punches do.
>>98746769Also make sure your opponent is actually doing their TSM correctly. It has a micro pulse laser to turn 8 into 9, but heat sinks have to be activated and deactivated at the end phase. If you can add extra heat from a plasma rifle or infernos, you can tip him over into movement penalties, shooting penalties, and shutdown checks. TSM becomes a dangerous gamble when someone can dump heat on you.
>>98746763It was, yes. There's a few others, but Karl Urban was the *specific* example I was thinking of who doesn't give 2 shits about whether his face is covered as long as the script is good.>>98746574>caring about the opinions of actorsYou know how I know you know absolutely nothing about how the high end film industry works?
>>98746793And for that matter, also make sure the stealth armor is being flipped on or off at the right time too. It adds 10 heat, a full alpha strike Kontio with stealth on goes from 9 heat to something like 20. That's going to make him a 5/8(10).And of course the supercharger can pop, and the more you use it to pinball across the battlefield, the more likely it becomes. Keeping his TSM up means risking engine damage (which would also fuck his heat curve).
>>98745927Since the sides of the head are apparently the most important contact point, I'm surprised you don't see ones that look like the Patlabor helmets.
>>98746555What's funny is that even in the cartoon, they still picked a helmet that shows the entire face up front.
>>98747067Even compared to some of the more open faced ones. You'd have to warp the framing of basically every shot forward if you put Buff McBigname in one of these.
>>98747082
>>98747087This one is almost there, you'd just have to shave back the bottom edge and maybe retract the visor all the way up.
>>98746565Could be an asset from a Star Wars game made by the same people and/or with the same engine that was left in the code. Sometimes developers use stuff from older games to test the engine on before the new models are done.
>>98745304I recognize most of those mechs, but what's the dark grey one?
>>98747096a huge amount of PC games from that time frame used the .shp format for sprites and they could be directly ported from one thing to another with very little or no modification.
>>98742793>MechCommanders are actually canonbased
Home is the Regiment, across the sea of stars On worlds hot, on worlds cold, where Warriors tread afar. Though place of birth and family, though loved ones all be lost, Home is the Regiment, across the sea of stars Home is the Regiment, though warriors travel far. They cannot take our home from us, our home is where we are! With brothers under arms we share a bond that draws us where Home is the Regiment, across the sea of stars. Home is the Regiment, the price of glory high. We stand with brothers at our sides to pay that price, and die! The blood of comrades cries to us long after glory's past: "Home is the Regiment, across the sea of stars." Home is the Regiment, in honor's proud refrain - blood brothers forged together as drawn steel quenched in flame! They stand by us in blood and fire and share with us the cry: "Home is the Regiment, our family and our own!"

>>98745131
Are Cataphracts good for you?
>>98747655Yes.The FedSuns sure can recognize a good design when they see one.
>>98747655It's a cool design imo
>>98745020>Just have the black marauder show up and start eating people.
>>98747396thats a beautiful song, mate. glad i heard it.
>>98744937Mechs that are "too old" start becoming self aware because of all the brainwaves and their only reason to exist is to KILL.
>>98747655>>98747676>>98747680>cataphract Why in the fuck did the Cataphract get a name when the Timberwolf got the designation Madcat? If the targeting computer goes off silhouette, Davion Mechwarriors should have been getting shit like Mad/Shad or Mad/Phoenix and Mad Shadow would be a BALLIN ass name for a Capellan mech.
>>98748066Considering that the planet it was built on was within invading distance, they probably already knew about it before they ever saw one.
>>98748106It would have been sick for the CapCon to encounter Cataphracts in the AFFS before deploying them themselves.
>>98747844The original story description is "shiny black Marauder that looked factory new." A single later spacer rumor claimed "it turned its head and looked at me". Now every fan drawing of the Black Marauder is some kind of monster that looks nothing like any description in ANY story about it. On the one hand it annoys me, but on the other hand it kind of shows how rumors blow up and take on a life of their own, which ties into its origin as a weird tall tale of the Periphery.
>>98748148I seem to recall the original story saying it looked *like* a Marauder, but the lines weren't quite right, and it had some extra bumps and geometry that isn't there on a normal Marauder. Then there was the "it turned and looked at me" story, but it was explicitly in the dead of night with no good illumination. So either it did no such thing, or it's only able/willing to be blatant when you can't get a great view of what's going on.
>>98748148>shiny black Marauder that looked factory newCause this isn't nearly as fun to draw as a mech with a monster face, and gothic completely failed as an outlet for biomechs.
>>98745927If Karl Urban can wear the dredd helmet for a whole movie I don't see why an actor couldn't just wear the pill helmet
Played the Alta Vista contract out of Draconis Reach. The first game was an indecisive draw. The second game, I was losing, then magically won due to a command complication, which made the contract overall a draw. Overall, I've come out basically where I started financially, but with a Stinger IIC added to our company, and we have the option to purchase a Wasp 3A and/or a Battlemaster 3M to expand our company with. My shareholders will decide that for me.
>>98748066The caps started building them in 3025 and the invasion kicked off in 3028, they had time to establish themselves as not just a frankenmech as opposed to madcats which seemingly appeared out of nowhere
>>98748287>a Wasp 3A and/or a Battlemaster 3MTough choices will have to be made.
>>98748304If we buy the Wasp 3A, we can field both it and the Stinger IIC we picked up last month in place of the introtech Victor 9B we're stuck with, getting us two fast mechs in place of one slow ammo-packed deathtrap, which will be a big help in objective games.Meanwhile, if we buy the Battlemaster, we can put both our Whitworth and our Victor into reserve and field the Battlemaster and the Stinger IIC in their place. We won't have five mechs, but we'll trade a fragile assault and a mediocre medium for a decent light and a tougher, overall better assault.
>>98748066Reporting names are like conventional regiments or Mackie knockoff names. The vast majority have never been listed.
>>98746530Top Gun Maverick was an outlier I suppose?
>>98748374Yes. And Tom Hardy has shown himself to be unusually liberal about this.but the fact that a couple actors in a couple movies have been willing to relax this doesn't mean that it's not a thing.
>>98748273If someone were to make a live action or even new animated battletech, they'd absolutely not have the pill helmets for more than a bit of being "old" neurohelmets. The only media that seems to ever try to keep the classic helmets is the tabletop, and even then they seem minimized and lightly addressed.Out of curiosity; for anyone who has seen the cartoon do they do neuralhelmets seriously? The only in-cockpit scenes I've really seen are Mathus memes so I can't say they're representative.
>>98748316The Wasp looks more surviveable than the Stinger with the extra point of TMM when jumping. The extra firepower of the Stinger IIC seems like a trap choice that will get you got.
>>98748419All the episodes are on youtube if you really want to check it out.
>the "pill" helmet Was from a non-canon fucking magazine, neurohelmets have been depicted over and fucking over, and the only ones even close are Primative Neurohelmets.
>>98748419
>>98748066Unlike with the Clans, Comstar could just ask the Capellans what the actual designation of the mech was. New IS mechs may have reporting names but they're rarely actually listed anywhere. The one that comes to mind is Mauler: the original Drac name for it was Daboku, with Mauler being the Fedcom reporting name, but after the original prototype was shelved due to performance issues DCMS used the reporting name for the production version to distance it from the failure of the original.
>>98748467It's a good example of how raw fanbase momentum can wind up with people demanding something that isn't even correct. Like these nu warhammer dwarf women not having beards. They never had beards, but for some reason the fanbase started assuming they did and now they complain when they don't. Consensus on trve lore and canon can be invented by enough people assuming it.
>organize mercenary campaign>tell people it will involve doing your accounting>guy in group refuses to create his balance sheet and just keeps asking how much he got paidWhy would you show up for combat math if you can't do math?

Is there ever an explanation for why the 4th succession war is considered a new thing, given that there was no official end to the 3rd? Obviously the big, multi planet offensives are a departure but plenty of wars have periods of high and low activity.
>>98749093Probably because the FedCom was a new player on the scene that had no bearing on the 3rd.
>>98748273Again, Karl Urban is EXPLICITLY an exception because he respected the material...
>>98749093A lot of wars don't so much end as just peter out. The low-end merc raiding of 3025 is about as close to peace as the IS gets, so the start of the 4th was a very noticeable 0-to-60 oh-shit-oh-fuck moment.
>>98748148I head-canon the whole "looks like a Marauder, but wrong" as it's the TRO: Phoenix Marauder because boy that thing is hideous.
>>98748406Its also a skill issue. Acting with your face covered takes much more talent and skill to portray properly. Remember most movie actors are straight up nepobabies who can barely act to begin with. Urban, Cruise, and Hardy are incredibly good actors.
>>98749177The story outright states that it's an old school Marauder because Kevin recognizes it as a General Motors Marauder and not a Project Phoenix one.>It was a Marauder. Not one of the new-style chassis, but one of the classic GM MAD- series.

Local scene is mostly alpha strike players. People act like regular old battletech is just way too complicated. What causes this?
>>98749946They chose the less pedantic way to play, you should follow suit
>>98749946What causes it is CBT taking a long time to play and people having finite time.

>>98749956>>98749957But AS is too stripped down and bare bones, it was made for when you want to put a galaxy worth of mechs on the table but most don't play it that way. They also seem to have the attitude of 40k players.

>>98749980What it's for and what's wrong with it is irrelevant. >>98750370That doesn't sound faster than>roll the dice>add them
>>98750360Yes. At least I would in a game that is bit crushed for the sake of brevity. I would prefer that kind of approach than the one in alpha strike.
What happened to btg? This place used to be super anti alpha strike, now we have people shitting on classic lol. Did all the old fags leave or something?
We are not taking the bait
How different would the game be if jumping could only be done every other turn or jump charges were tracked by pips? 5 jump jets, jump 3 this turn, can only jump 2 next turn, 3 regenerate by the next, wait one more for 5 hexes again. Or of course jump 5 and go a whole turn without any jump possible. Would have to consider making heavy and assault class jets lighter so that they aren't so dead weight though.Or alternatively, jump recharges by a flat +4 every turn. So assaults with 3 jets can jump fully every single turn, which gives them more value in relative terms to the lights that are more thruster nozzles than torso.
>>98750511considering how old this game is, chances are they died.
>>98750511I'm not pro alpha strike, I think it does a bad job at even being battletech-like, I would however like a lite version of battletech that is a supported official ruleset.

>>98750568I don't like alpha strike as much as battletech, but you gotta admit it captures the essence of most battles. Most of the time, your mech will die to engine or gyro crits and brackets its weapons according to range.

>>98750591One thing that always stuck out to me was the whole FCS damage thing being a much bigger part of gameplay. I know Sensor crits are a thing in vanilla, but given how much harder it is to hit the head it seems like damage that affects aim is much rarer.
Okay, /btg/, I'm feeling like finally cutting my teeth on the ilClan era. Let's play a Hinterlands Chaos Campaign. Starting date will be April 3151. Due to a shortage of both plastic and friends, battles will be played via MegaMek vs the bot, and BSP will be disabled. I will retain tactical command, while higher-level decisions will be dictated by the whims of the thread. Therefore, the first thing we will need is a unit to command. That means:>unit name>unit origin>1-2 'Mechs from that origin's selection table, totaling 3500BV or less>1 pilot for each 'Mech>pilots start at 4/5. The unit may take 2 pilot skill advances, but not the same skill on the same pilot twiceSo, what's our story? Are we an LCAF muster-out (or deserter) taking the initiative where the Commonwealth won't? A Falcon too young (or old) to die on Terra, tasting freedom for the first time? A pirate going "legit"? Or a veteran merc striking out on our own?
>>98751435Second table
>>98751435I vote for being Lyran deserters.Funnily enough, my Drac Reach campaign is also crowdsourcing the company's decisions, but to a discord server
>>98751435The idea of rogue Clanners is the most interesting, but also the most difficult. You need to balance in-born stupid honor with a sense of nihilism and purposelessness that would make a German be like, "Whoa, dude, chill."
Somebody suggested we bail, sell our mechs and retire as best we can, but we all voted, and everybody but snakey decided they didn't want to come home empty handed and break even, so they start planning a heist. The target: Mechs! Snakey, unknown to them, has betrayed them and they are walking into a setup.
>>98751756Can always play as non-warrior clanners. Technician caste industrialmech pilots turned mechwarriors could be cool, and it explains why we got left behind when Malvina took the whole Touman to terra.
>>98751758they take some infantry, armored personnel carriers, an ifv and try to sneak into the camp to steal the mechs.Unfortunately, a problem with one of the vees drive train causes a delay, causing them to be late and the opposition to wonder if perhaps snakey has double crossed them.Eventually things reach a climax and snakey has to make a choice, does he betray his unit or does he stick with his crew? What mechanics should we use to represent what snakey and his mech do? What should his opposition be? what will be waiting for them when they arrive?
>>98751802what about his lance mates? and what kind of name is snakey anyway?
>>98750591My overwhelming complaint is that reducing everything to a single card and statline eliminated lists of guns and equipment, which is like 70% of the source of neuron activation. Which specific arm actuator gets damaged is not necessarily a super interesting detail, but it do need to know about what cool guns are being shot at who.

>>98751440Since we're not using BSP rules, we have 3500 BV to play with instead of 3000. Stinger C 2 works as an objective grabber, it's got two hands and is reasonably fast.

>>98753187The entire invasion is impossible without fiat. There are worlds with militias larger than the average clan's touman, and the clans are just as limited by the ablative nature of all the armor they use as the IS. Some people like to bring up the warships, but there also aren't enough of those, because nuclear weapons are much easier to make than battlemechs.
>>98753251Ummm couldn't the clans just retaliate by nuking every planet? Checkmate.
>>98753258I'm going to tell you a secret, anon. The reason that only ASF's are left in the IS after the 2nd Succession War and not Warships, is that ASF's carry the nukes.

Rolled 2, 1, 4, 3 = 10 (4d6)>New Nebikon>Kandersteg>Lyran Commonwealth>1 April 3151In much of the Inner Sphere, today was a day of jokes and pranks. "Star Commander" Roy was already living one. Solahma before the age of thirty-five, through no fault but a quiet posting in the rear of the Jade Falcon Occupation Zone and an actuator that gave way before it had any right to. His only recompense had been avoiding assignment to the infantry, securing for himself a refitted Stinger as part of the Sudeten garrison. It was there that he had made grim kinship with an Elemental named Elizabeth, a daughter of the Malthus bloodhouse. Similarly young, they had bonded well at the indignities their Clan had thrust upon them. They would have remained there forever, praying for the day a pirate raid would come to put them out of their misery, when Khan Malvina Hazen had exiled them both, and the entire Occupation Zone besides. There was no other way to put it. Khan Hazen had left no instructions, no chain of command, and no line of communication. She had simply gathered everyone "worthy" of the Jade Falcon and thrown them headlong at Terra. Everything and everyone left behind was self-evidently beneath her consideration. The decision to depart had been simple enough. Clan Jade Falcon had denied them, humiliated them, and now it had abandoned them. What obligation did they have to stay? Stealing a Hellbringer straight off the Olivetti factory line may have been slightly excessive, but they needed a second 'Mech to cover the Stinger as it carried away the battle armor suits they used to pay passage on a Free Guild DropShip.
Rolled 2, 3 = 5 (2d6)>>98754054They could have sold the 'Mechs and lived comfortable lives wherever they pleased, but both of them rankled at the thought. They were Trueborn warriors in their prime, and they would have their honor and glory, Clan assignments be damned. And so here he sat in a hotel room on Kandersteg, the Lyran Commonwealth's corewardmost hiring hall. The decision to become mercenaries had been much less straightforward than the decision to leave Sudeten. Fighting for money was the greatest perversion of the warrior spirit, but no other Clan would take Codexes as unremarkable as theirs, and joining a House military was unthinkable. Mercenary work at least granted them the freedom to choose their battles, so that they would not be called to gun down orphanages by some Successor Lord.Roy scanned the noteputers strewn across his bed. The Archon might be slow to feat on the Falcon's corpse, but smaller vultures were already flocking to the scene. Contracts were flooding into Kandersteg, seeking warriors for all manner of activities, drawing merchants and mercenaries alike to sell their weapons and their lives in what was rapidly becoming known as the Hinterlands.

It feels really weird to see how much Battletech is influenced by anime from its founding, and yet there is a large contingent of people among both fans and some of the devs that seem to despise that it was. Just what causes that?
>>98754316Anime went to shit.
>>98754316It seems like you are chasing a mirage, and interpreting staying within established genre and setting conventions as hatred for other settings that deviate from that.
>>98754316A bunch of old farts who unironically think the series has "matured" past its "ridiculous" anime roots which is insanely retarded and cope because battlemechs have alot in common with evangelions and definitely move in a pretty anime way. Just because they run their nipples about "realistic logistics" and "real politique" in the setting doesn't mean it's any better than its anime roots. Frankly I just reject these kinds of people as being retarded though. Battletech comes from anime and is still very anime. The fact that the setting is explicitly NOT grimderp means it's still very anime, even if the writers love to harp on about things being more le realistic with its characters
>>98754316Anime went from niche cool thing in the 80's to really blowing up in the nineties and suddenly a bunch of people started getting weirdly threatened by it. You can see the transformation from dismissiveness turn to fear and loathing. This is when comics artists started churning out pictures of ren and stimpy killing astro boy or whatever.Battletech going hard into "uh we never liked it, it had no influence, and actually, we made it better!" is highly predictable. Anime won though, and the new generation has actually watched it and knows this rivalry is all bullshit and one-sided. And the whole time the japanese didn't even really notice.
>>98754371Me when I don't know how large a meter is or how fast 64 kph is.
>>98754316New "fans" that saw something in battletech they liked, latched onto it, and only like the skewed and inaccurate vision of battletech they have that is effectively their headcanon. Most of these probably got into battletech through mechwarrior online or mechwarrior 5, others are part of the kind of tabletop crowd that trench crusade is popular with.Devs that never really liked what battletech originally was and would radically change the entire setting to fit their preference if they had full creative control. Any dev or writer in the bryan young camp basically(stackpole is one of these).
>>98754391>insult old people>get a nonsensical but seething response in return levery time>>98754388This largely seems to be where it comes from. People never got over that idea that anime was this le bad cringe thing and have stuck around creating a massive amount of cognitive dissonance for themselves>>98754393>MechwarriorWhile I love the games, they have done probably the most damage to the franchise than anything. For every guy I see joking about BT being epic "western" mechs in full irony, I also find another guy who says that but unironically and thinks that all the mechs are supposed to be land battleships...that have arms for some reason
>>98754456Except the Yeoman. The Yeoman has the least arms of any mech. There are quads with more armlike structures than the Yeoman has.
BSA conventional infantry are great compared to total war conventional infantry. Finally, an Awesome or Urbanmech can actually use the small laser THAT THEY EXPLICITLY HAVE FOR ANTI-INFANTRY FUNCTION against conventional infantry and have it be worth a damn.
>>98754479There are tanks with more arms than the Yeoman.
>>98754456I'm making fun of you for describing battlemechs as having a lot in common with 80 meter demon(?) clones(?) that may or may not be able to break the sound barrier.
>>98754481You mean once again. Under the original rules, any damage destroyed an infantry unit. Under the rules before TW, that small laser would still kill three men in cover. TW was where they added damage divisors to anything that isn't explicitly anti-infantry.
>>98754499My point is that on the spectrum of Gundam to evangelion, battlemechs are closer to evas than Gundam by virtue of how myomers work. They give mechs a lot more of an organic range of movement that otherwise
>>98754502Then why didn't players simply kill the TW designers at the time and forcefully revert the changes instead of letting them become the de-facto dumbass infantry rules for 20 years? You know, dumbass rules where infantry can plink a mech to death with arrows and beat mechs to death with clubs?
>>98754527Infantry became stronk because of infantry vet fans on the official forum. Presumably there's fear that trying to revert the rules by force will result in 60 year old former grunts hunting you down.
>>98754481I think Battlefield Support Asset rules are FANTASTIC for infantry (NOT battle armor), aircraft and even artillery. I think they're shit for tanks and battle armor, though
>>98754531You're telling me a bunch of 11Bs whinged enough that the rules writers in 2006 caved and invalidated a ton of mechs' AP capability, then proceeded to go further and write rules where a bunch of regular ass footslogging infantry can plink mechs to death with assault rifles? Were the rules writers fucking retarded?
>>98750032>How long is "too long" for people these days?I have about 3.5 hours at the game store after work and before they close. I should be able to get at least 2 games in during that time, plus set-up time. Do the math. Classic is for retirees and NEETs who just have infinite time to waste playing a game that takes 20+ hours for a satisfying conclusion. It's not a game playable by normal people. That's why Alpha Strike is better. Classic is an outdated relic that needs to die off in favor of a game people actually have time to play.
>>98754551>You're telling me a bunch of 11Bs whinged enough that the rules writers in 2006 caved and invalidated a ton of mechs' AP capability, then proceeded to go further and write rules where a bunch of regular ass footslogging infantry can plink mechs to death with assault rifles?Yes, though I think some were Marines.>Were the rules writers fucking retarded?Do I really need to answer that question?

>>98754502It is insanely fucking stupid for a platoon of death commandos to break and run because a mech killed one of them with an autocannon and you know it.
>>98754499Any mechwarrior game that had the mechs perform like how they actually move in-universe would play like a slower version of armored core.

Yes.And the 19Ks did the same thing with armor. There was a genuine push to make the TacOps vehicle effectiveness rules into full TW-level rules, without changing tank BV cost whatsoever. The worst enemy of the game is Harmony Gold. The next worst enemy are writers who want to change the setting to tell the stories they want to tell without any care for the setting's integrity. The *next* worst enemy, though, is the fan base itself.
>>98754587It's a shame that combat pilots are too busy having sex with girls or else ASFs could be the strongest thing on the board again.
>>98754570and it's insanely stupid that 100% of infantry will stay and fight to the death 100% of the time, even when a giant robot is jumping up and down on themso let's agree that there's a medium solution somewhere in there and that infantry rules need to be changed by someone responsible and without an agenda aside from fixing this specific problem
>>98754570Generic infantry squads aren't death commandos. Also it's entirely possible that autocannon killed them to the last man. Left 180mm holes in their chests and/or heads.
>>98754555Based trips of truthEven trannies know that the future of the franchise is Alpha Strike Why are you grogs stupider than a tranny?
>>98754555How do you feel about flipping a coin to determine who wins? You could get dozens of games in a 4 hour period that way.
>>98754600Arranging your platoon in such a way that they don't all die in three seconds when someone shoots an automatic weapon of some kind is a pretty big part of modern and presumably future infantry school
>>98754624When the "automatic weapon" in question is a machine aimed, vehicle scale cannon, it doesn't really matter how you arrange yourself. That bush you're trying to hide behind isn't stopping it, and being spread out doesn't matter when it has a rate of fire usually reserved for machine guns. Or it's a beam of light that can melt a car and freely scythe across the horizon.
I think the lesson we can all learn here is that the original infantry rules in Battledroids were the peak of Battletech infantry rules.
>>98754613If it was good enough for the Nova Cats.
>>98754641Honestly, like with so much else, BMR rules are good here. Infantry can't be ignored, especially elite infantry, but it's not a big problem as long as you aren't an idiot.
>>98754633Automatic cannons are not a wild science fiction idea. You can watch videos of them failing to kill people in woods or trenches on another part of this very website.
>>98754624iirc, under the original rules, infantry only came in squads and did something like 5 damage in a single chunk. So technically your platoon wouldn't die to a single small laser. Only a squad or enough of a squad to render the survivors combat irrelevant. If you had a platoon, the rest of them would require other attacks or more turns to dispatch.
>>98754667Future sci-fi space cannons from space year 2800 are not modern failguns.
>>98754667Current automatic cannons are usually 30mm cannons at the largest instead of 50-150mm.Something tells me a 120mm rotary cannon firing APHE at a bunch of infantry is going to do more than just convince them to leave.
>>98754692There's the 40mm Bofors that everyone uses.Bofors actually made a full-auto 152mm gun that shot about 15 rpm.

>>98754526>spectrum of Gundam to evangelionThis only makes sense if Evangelion was a mecha series, but it's not. It's a kaiju series wearing mecha pajamas.
>>98755653Dougram wasn't even being subbed back then. Its direct influence was limited to the model kits being widely available in Chinatown during that period. If anything, the Battle of Stanrey board game might have been known to the devs.>>98755643It's where the direct influence stopped. In terms of world building, storytelling, pacing, in terms of what the robots mean to the story ect, BT stands well outside of the Japanese takes on the Mecha genre. It's not by accident that a cartoon based on a scifi novel series is as close as you can get to BT in Anime.
>>98755707This. Evangelion is a Special Effects series cartoon. It's Ultraman Oedipal.
>>98755653Despite Dougram basically being the unofficial Battletech anime, AFAIK the similarities are purely coincidental. FASA bought rights to the mech models they used from a western distributor that had gotten the license for selling toys and model kits from the original Japanese license-holders (which is what led to the whole Unseen debacle, as it turned out the company had no legal right to sell the rights to the designs). They never directly interacted with the companies responsible for making the anime the mechs were based on, and as far as I know had never actually watched Dougram (which is a fairly obscure anime).
>>98754555You must be paying really small Alpha Strike games if you can get two games in that amount of time. You do realize AS games are, at minimum, company on company, right?
>>98755776Depends on the points, really. The game I last played was 2 lances vs 2 lances, took about an hour and a half. Got my ass kicked, too, cost me a Banshee as lost salvage.
>>98755755>Dougram wasn't even being subbed back then>>98755761>AFAIK the similarities are purely coincidentalIt's not like they would have copied the characters or the story beats. Even if they only took from its visual style it's very obvious how they could wind up so similar when dougram had such iconic imagery. There's a very specific concept you take away from it these designs. This is all fine so long as no one does anything stupid like insist that it's totally different, or worse, insist that it's so original that the industry that first produced it holds no connection to your thing at all, that you invented it and they couldn't have.
>>98755847I think the simplest difference is that BT doesn't deal in the psychological effects of being militarily occupied/colonized. The POV is always that of somebody passing through who think of themselves as uninvolved, no matter the side they're killing people for.Heck, US capeshit are notably weird in how they just don't deal with the Fallout of New York getting blown to smithereens every couple years, but when 9/11 happened, Doctor Doom finally shed a tear for all the valiant Taliban freedom fighters or whatever. For the Japanese, those were a actual generational issue that, by a game of telephone, became cliche of their giant robot stories.
Why do most battletech players insist that TW convential infantry are "da best thing ever" ruleswise when TW CI invalidate a lot of mechs' stated AP weaponry (small lasers), can plink mechs to death with assault rifles and blackjacks, and flat out do shenanigans with field guns that don't actually make sense in an in-universe context?
>>98755927Fieldguns Arent TW, thats tacops.Other than that, TW generic infantry is fun simple and easy to use. They're great for objective based gameplay
>>98755940>this is the urbanmech, designed for urban fighting, which would naturally involve fighting infantry>it has an AC/10 for dealing with enemy armor, and a small laser explicitly for the purposes of killing groups of infantry>small lasers only kill one infantryman per turn btw>a lot of other mechs, like the Awesome, also have small lasers for this explicit purpose yet the small laser is apparently terrible at fighting infantry according to the rulesTW infantry rules are complete horseshit that go against the simulationist nature of the game by simply invalidating swathes of canonical anti-personnel mech weapons that aren't machine guns or flamers. Nevermind, again, the fact that they are plinking mechs to death with assault rifles, at least Battledroid had the good sense to say they are explicitly armed with at least one man-portable mech-scale machine gun or SRM-2 per squad
>>98755927Because its funny. It's hard to argue that the infantry rules are a borked mess, in any case. Like it doesn't make sense to maintain infantry (motorized) as distinct from infantry riding a unit with its own stat block when the former isn't fast enough to move along with other mechanized forces and can't be transported by TW-grade transport vehicles either.Never mind the anti-armour laser becoming the one specifically noted for being good at anti-infantry duty.
>>98755927Small lasers aren't anti-infantry weapons; they never have been. They're at best a middle-ground between dedicated AI and direct fire energy weapons in that they're more damage and heat efficient plinking troopers than bigger lasers.Anti Infantry weapons are: Machine Guns, Flamers, Small and Micro Pulse Lasers, Plasma Cannons, Plasma Rifles, A and B Pods, specialty Ballistic and Missile Ammo and a handful of other weapons.>>98755956The original Urbanmech is designed for fighting Mechs in cities; infantry is a problem that can be solved with infantry more economically; the trashcan is supposed to throw down with what would otherwise just open up with a hail of machinegun fire and kill a dozen troopers in a pass.
>>98755696I never noticed before, but this looks a lot like that iconic scene from Dougram.
>>98755927Good news for you from Xotl, anon: >The 3.5 pages of small-font weapon construction tables to differentiate my five bow and arrow types and nine sword types and and twelve laser rifle types etc etc, the endless listing of nonsensical damage values so that I can use literal blackjacks to knock out Battlemechs like they're some kind of 1940s hardboiled detective, the broken nature of some of those guns, the generally nonsensical AToW-based damage formula used to come up with the damages, the eight columns of different range TM modifiers that don't scale in a consistent fashion, the abuse of support weapons to do wacky things with ranges, the fact that most infantry can have extremely short ranges so that combined with their minimal movement they often do nothing, the four pages of swarm attack rules, the necessity to add a pile of extra columns to the Cluster Table solely to resolve their attacks, the glued-on damage divisor, field gun, and specialist troops rules in a separate book, the sheer annoyance of handling mobs: we can easily do better than this, I think. Maybe we won't solve everything in a single go, but I see no reason to think that the peak of infantry design was TW.Unfortunately, he also stated that a proper rework of infantry is unlikely to happen by Q1 2027, and given the process of implementing changes he described, I wouldn't expect a public playtest of reworked infantry rules until 2028 at the earliest. But it IS being worked on.
>>98755956For sure bud. I read this passage in the original TRO 3025 and thought: the small laser is definitely supposed to be an effective and serious anti-infantry weapon.
behold the greatest infantry rules ever written for battletech
>>98756023That implies that SL is useful at laying suppressive fire on infantry, which the current rules don't really support cause it might at best kill one guy out of 30. If it would function like MGs it would actually perform the job.
>>98756143Honestly, the battletech-gothic anti abomination mode for laser weapons seems like a good fix. Just let it work Vs regular infantry as well

>>98756192Shooting a light laser at some infantry doesn't stop them from shooting back either way.
>>98756207Yes it does, please refer to >>98756037. It deals 3 damage, so 27 infantrymen if they're all in the same hex.
>>98756344Yes, the whole point is that the way infantry rules originally worked the anti-infantry SL a lot of mechs had actually was effective at dealing with infantry, as as any hits from mech-scale weapon would wipe out a 9-man infantry squad and if there was more infantry in a hex the damage would transfer over to them. So in most cases MGs, flamers, and SLs were enough to deal with infantry because a larger weapon would be overkill (a PPC would only kill more infantry than a SL if there were 4 or more squads crammed into the same hex).Under current rules flamers and MGs still work because they were given special rules that make them deal extra damage to infantry, while SL now only kills one trooper from the squad (which is now about 30 guys as standard, so trying to wipe it out with just the SL would take 30+ turns).
Alpha Strike Commander Ed - TAG rules>A successfully designated target is spotted for indirect fire by the TAG-equipped unit, with no spotter attacked or spotter attacker movement modifiers . In addition, a designated target can be attacked by semi-guided LRMs (see p . 150) and homing artillery (see p . 152) . If unsuccessful with a TAG designating attack, the target is still spotted for indirect fire, but will add the spotter attacked modifier .What is that "spotter attacked" modifier supposed to be?>>98756207It's BT lasers. I suppose that if you see the cleaving beam of death zipping around, you keep your head down.
>>98756801>I suppose that if you see the cleaving beam of death zipping around, you keep your head downBT infantry certainly fucking don't. The squad leader could get vaporized and the rest of the squad will be completely unfazed.
Lasers of all kinds not being able to deal with infantry is such a gamey dumb thing. Changing the power settings on energy weapons, not just lasers, is a confirmed thing they can do. Rationally, any vehicle or battle armor could turn down their small lasers to the minimum power setting to get as long of a burn time as possible, then just wave the thing around an infantry squad to set everyone on fire and also permanently blind them just for good measure. A large laser of any kind should be the strongest anti infantry weapon available unless they are in heavy cover, that's when flamers would make more sense. But alas BT physics work in strange ways yet nobody in universe questions why things work the way they do.
was he really that great? From the looks of it everything he attempted was pretty much failureAm I really supposed to believe that him defeating Amaris with a single greatest military force in Inner Sphere was impressive? He didn't even humble any of the Great Houses in direct combat, they just let him go to Hegemony unimpeded after he finished stomping out hollowed out Rim Worlds Republic, he didn't even entirely conquer the Taurians! And then he goes and defeats an incompetent wannabe tyrant whose "Empire" would've fallen prey to Great Houses in like a decade or two, and I am supposed to think that he is the greatest general ever after that? And what does he do afterwards? Doesn't even try to keep Hegemony as at least a rump state, no he fucks off and EVEN THEN it all falls apart with him in charge

>>98757592Pretty sure it refers to the spotter also firing, but they just phrase it differently. Spotter attacked as in the spotter has attacked, not the spotter has been attacked.
>>98753647Indeed. For all its goofy tendencies, the Yeoman is king of economic utility missiles. >>98757796>Unless it's just meant to be 'spotter movement', and the word attacker is the error. Not error, it's there to distinguish the offensive malus (1 walking, 2 running, 3 jumping) from the defensive bonus.>shooting unit's penalty for having moved>penalty for IDF>spotting unit's penalty for having moved>penalty for spotter having fired>target's TMM>target's cover bonus
>>98757816Seems straightforward, then.
The Yeoman base model has its missile launchers in the side torsos and yet it somehow counts as having arms (same mythical arms as the Blitzkrieg I guess). Would have been easy to give it little Hussar style arms but I digress. The Yeoman's upgrade moves all its armament to these arms, letting it flip them. How the fuck is that fucktarded brick supposed to manage that? And why the hell is the FWL (via Tamarind) still intent on building the damn things even after being freed from them? They have so many better LRM throwing designs to hand.
>>98757876Yeah>if hit: negate penalties for spotter movement and spotter firing>if miss: do not negate spotter movement penalty, and using the TAG counts as shooting, so you get the spotter firing penalty too, dumbass.
>>98757904It's like a rubik's cube. Except it actually only rotates the middle parts since the legs are attached directly to the outer sections.
>>98757904>How the fuck is that fucktarded brick supposed to manage that?Very carefully.>so many better LRM throwing designs to handDo they? The yeoman is a pretty efficient missile boat, there aren't really any other heavies with the same throw weight.
>>98757904So the more sensible option is that they gave it pods like many other designs with "arm" missiles. The slightly less sensible option is moving all the missiles out to the end on a swivel. The least sensible, and therefore most likely option is that they put all the missile ports directly on the side surface of its torso cubes, leaving the front face completely barren aside from the cockpit.
>>98758102There's also the possibility that they cut a slant into it so it's more of a wedge than a block and now all the launchers are sitting at 45 degree angles.
>>98757816>>98757908There's no roll for spotting, so the moving attacker malus has no place there. And you don't get to spot a malus if the spotter has moved.Besides your bonuses are all wrong. it's standstill -1, moving 0, jumping +2; and you can't shoot when sprinting. Is 4chan full of bots now, or do people just sprout nonsense when they don't know the rules?

>>98759006Do you have any fortifications?I remember reading a story where infantry had dug in and built trenches and obstructions.
>>9875894010/10 would request them to fill out my augmented lances.
>>98758940thats a whole company.isn't it kind of strange tank lances are considered the same as battlemech lances? you'd think if battlemechs were the focus, they'd adapt by outnumbering them, the same way its still pretty much a company of IS mechs vs. a Star of Clan mechs. How hasn't the IS caught up yet? Its mostly sidegrades at this point.
>>98759077They outnumber them on the strategic level. For every mech regiment, there are at least several tank regiments, and dozens of infantry regiments.
>>98759077If the main bottleneck to space travel was tonnage, it makes sense to use mechs. We can not say what the ideal warform is, as it can never be unleashed. Politics and Diplomacy restrain us. Compassion and Humanity bind us. Who is to say then that that the ideal warform is not built in the image of man? It represents his ideological ideal self. A war is made more compelling by both sides having strong ideological positions, it breaks your heart to see them fighting. Even if one side is clearly in the wrong, who is to say what is right and wrong in the moment we are in?
>>98759093you'd think mechs would be wading through blood then. Maybe mechwarriors really are the noble knights people portray them as sometimes.
>>98759093i mean its just odd that they use the same org charts. like, if you two tanks per mech, a point should be 2 tanks and a lance should be 8.
>>98759124It has been figured out for some time that more than 3 or 4 tanks as a platoon sized unit is too many.
>>98759118on the other hand, no matter how impractical a mech might be for warfare, its kind of hard to stare down a fifty foot tall, hundred ton warmachine. I kind of wish there was a game about fighting mechs on the ground, or like a show that was from that perspective. (Not like that mechhunter one, that was cool as shit, i mean like as a group, where the mech is clearly goliath and you are david.)
>>98759136its cause of roads right?i mean how are you going to pack an assault mech lance 2 by 2 unless the area you are in is Huge.
>>98759118Most of those units are reserves and perimeter security types. If you think about a planetary invasion, if the only combat units you had were all spearheading the attack, then the defenders would be able to just waltz right around them to smash up logistical units and cut the attackers off from their support. You need a lot of other units just holding down the line, and then the defenders need units keeping the line holders from advancing in every other direction. For every dynamic and exciting battle, there are dozens of contacts where they lob a couple of shells at each other from maximum range, mark the approximate location for artillery fire, then duck back behind the hill they've been hiding behind ever since the line moved up to it.
>>98759077they do in some militaries, it just depends
>>98759183god, imagine trying to cross the perimiter of a continent without air transport in battletech. By the time you got their, the battle would be over and everybody would have already went home.
>>98759183the front line in modern warfare is very thin. Mostly you keep your units in reserve and move to intercept them. Entrenched positions rarely last, and getting stuck in means being outmanueverd. The Front Line is Everywhere.
>>98759183the way i see it, mechs would be a lot less like front line combatants, and more like mobile direct fire artillery platforms
>>98759260say you wanted leverage over your enemy, a superior firing position angled downwards at the enemy. You could mount a weapon on an arm or a lever and hoist it above you. You could build a tower, but if it had wheels or tracks, how would you keep it from tipping over? The larger you make your frame, the less efficient your drivetrain is going to be, making it larger will just mean it gets stuck or can barely move.Ambulation makes sense.
>>98759249Which is why you use tanks and APCs and not trenches full of infantry. But you can't just leave a side freely open, that's how Locusts and Phoenix Hawks find their way to your ammo dumps and artillery pieces. And ironically after Helm, you can't even rely on stuff like remote sensor pods for early warning since the capacity for e-war to trick them far outstrips their capacity to overcome it. You need more human eyes on the flanks since they can see stealth units and the electronic systems can't.
>>98759286in space, volume costs nothing, mass costs everything. mechs are mostly empty space.
>>98759300In space the biggest bottleneck is jump collars. A dropship that carries 4 mechs and a dropship that carries 12 both take one collar. There are dropships that can carry an entire regiment (in cargo) that only take two collars. Collars are a huge limiting factor.
>>98759298the more i think about, the more i think it makes sense to make 'airboats' with long loiter times from which drones can rearm and refuel and be dispatched from. They could fly from base to base, and move the front with them.what will the next generation of mechs be? will the be smarter, faster, more agile? Or will it go the other direction?
>>98759343If you're willing to use cargo you can fit an RCT into a mule. It's just not a good idea if anyone knows you have done that.
>>98759343very true. i figure mass has to account somewhere in there.
>>98759377I can't imagine. It'd be like taking an intercontental bus that drops you off 50 miles from your destination and you have to walk the rest of the way.
>>98759412like travelling to china on a greyhound bus, your ass is flying economy.
>>98759412The personnel would have to fly on a different dropship, I think. There are bulk troop transports, and spaceliners that can be conscripted for troop transport.
>>98759377>>98759448wait, you mean infantry right? or is RCT the combined arms Regiment?
>>98759357you ever think if people are automating aircraft and air drones, maybe we could automate armor and groundcraft? Imagine what we could do with all that space? what does a motorcycle or atv look like without a human rider?Be a fun theme for mechs too, making cheap, disposable remote control mechs to swarm and overwhelm human pilots during a pilot shortage. The message could even be a fun twist, like don't beat em, join em! Use your own remote control mechs to augment your forces against their entirely automated force.
>>98759488A Fedsuns RCT is a mech regiment, several tank regiments, and several more than that infantry regiments, plus a couple battalions of ASF.The SLDF RCT before that was four or five regiments of any composition they felt like assembling iirc.

>>98757420I'm still here. I just wanted a little break between each game so people wouldn't get sick of it and have wanted to write some lore between each battle too. On that note, I do have the next batch of lore ready and plans for 2 more before the next battle gets underway. I'm glad I saw that people are still interested in it though. Anyway, here's s story time of Kapteyn Academy.---Today was a day in which all standard training had been halted. Not by choice, but because it was such a monumentous day that it was impossible for any of the Mechwarriors to focus. Word had come in that a jumpship had entered the system and a dropship had started its way to the academy. The contents of it would have a major impact on the events of the coming year."Dropship, we have a bunch of eager Mechwarrior cadets standing by down here. They'd like to hear it for themselves. Please repeat the contents of your cargo. Just the mechs if you don't mind.""Acknowledged, but tell them that I'm not doing this again!""They're all able to hear. Go ahead." Sure enough they were. All 16 Mechwarrior participants of the previous Kapteyn Academy training battle were gathered there, along with most of the liaisons."We have 4 mechs on board which are scheduled to be unloaded upon our arrival. They are as follows: a Wolverine that is currently registered to the Verkler family." Upon hearing this, Tetsuo Puentealto turned to Shiloh Verkler nearby and gave her a very surprised, but happy look. Shiloh smiled back and gave him a wink. "A Charger on behalf of the Draconic Combine." This caused the 4 cadets of the Combine to all exchange glances of surprise with eachother about that. They clearly weren't expecting a new mech and an assault mech was a great surprise, though hearing it was a Charger left them all with mixed feelings. "A Spider from the Capellan Confederation, with specific instructions to give ownership of it to one, Wang Lee."[1/6]
>>98759908"Me? The Spider is for me? But I... what did I do to deserver a Spider? I'm getting a Spider. I'm getting a Spider!" Wang Lee proclaimed quickly and excitedly to all those around him. He was greeted with pats on the back and congratulations. While to others it might not seem like much, for someone who was previously piloting a Locust, a Spider was seen as a huge upgrade."And the last mech is... this can't be right. Let me double check this one. It's from the Capellan Confederation too, but it's a..." Static came over the line, the kind that sounded like crumpled paper in a microphone."They're screwing with us." Bob Denard commented with a smirk. "Guess you guys will have to wait on that last one." Bob was quickly shouted down by the 4 Mechwarriors from the Capellan Confederation, but sure enough, the next words they heard were saying that there was static and that they were losing the signal. The next couple of hours were a torturous wait for all of the Mechwarriors and the dropship continued its final approach and began its landing. There was a prime spot on the roof of the academy which overlooked the, relatively, nearyby landing platform. The group was surprised to see that it was actually just a Leopard coming in to land. They were expecting something bigger, but most supposed that higher ups didn't want to free up anything larger than a Leopard for this trip. With the Leopard landed, the minutes crawled by as everyone eagerly waited for the mechbay doors to open. While the communications were no longer being broadcast for them to hear, there were undoubtedly some going on between the Academy's navigation command and the Leopard. Finally, after what felt like an hour to most there, but in reality was just minutes, the mechbay doors opened. The Leopard had come in at an angle where it was looking directly ahead at all the cadets on the roof, so they wouldn't be able to see the mechs until they actually walked out.[2/6]
>>98759917The first mech to walk out was the Spider. All battlemechs were of course large, monstrous machines of war, but among them, the Spider looked sleek and nimble; it's strides long, but slow. Clearly the mechs were not being operated at top speed for taking off the Leopard. While the Spider was still walking, out the other side came the Wolverine. While a more impressive mech than the Spider, this elicited less of a reaction from all the Mechwarriors there, as they had all gotten to see Shiloh's Wolverine up close already. Save for Tetsuo, who had the largest grin on his face."So that's mine then? It's really mine?" Tetsuo asked the nearby Shiloh."If you can hold up your end of the bargain it is." Shiloh answered him."Oh, I will. Don't you worry about that."A 3rd mech came out of the Leopard into view. It's hull painted an crimson red with jagged black striped cutting across it. It was the Charger."Tough break Dracs. Guess your coordinator couldn't send you anything better." The comment came from Rebecca Buck. If you asked her, she'd insist there were no hard feelings about the results of the previous battle. That was if you asked her and were somehow foolish enough to believe her."Ignacio would be honored to pilot such a mech." Ignacio Nachomura spoke up in defense of it."That piece of junk? Really?" This time however it was Marik Ishtar who answered."The piece of junk as you call it will be mine! All of you can laugh now while you still can, but once I'm inside it, I'll put all of you that end up against me in Hell!""Ha! And just how do you plan to do that? You gonna fire your 5 little lasers at us?""Yes, but only as I'm charging you." Marik answered with a sinister grin."Come now friends..." Obal Moriancumer chimed in. "...the Charger is a fine mech and I'm sure whoever gets to pilot it will do a fine job."[3/6]
>>98759925"If nobody wants it they can trade with me." Vladimir Ignatyev said. "It's bound to better than a Wasp, but if you don't think so, just let me know and...""Cadet Ignatyev!" Vladimir was interrupted by the sudden appearance of Jian Wei Chen, the Capellan Confederation's liaison. "What do you think you are doing here!?""Shen Chen, I was just...""I don't want to hear it!" The jovial mood that existed so fully just moments before had been crushed more thoroughly than a jeep under the foot of an Atlas."Honored Shen..." Obal Moriancumer spoke up. "...today is the arrival of new mechs. He, like the rest of us, are eager to see them. That is why he is here." Obal said with a polite smile."I do not recall asking you... Leaguer." Obal pursed his lips but maintained a smile. Out of all the cadets at the academy, none had been doing more to cross the existing faction divides than Obal. So to be called out like that and disparaged by the other nation's liaison, gave him pause to think."As you say." Obal tilted his head towards the Shen, prompting a glare back for a moment before Chen turned his attention back to Vladimir Ignatyev."Get back to the simulators for training, right, now.""But sir..." Vladimir began. "...they're not running today because of...""Then go to the library and study a tech manual!" The rooftop was silent, the only noise being the distant slow walking of the new mechs arriving, punctuated by blowing of the wind. Vladimir looked down at the ground, feeling unable to look at the faces of anyone else. He slowly started to walk towards the exit to the roof. He had made it about 10 feet when a shout of "Now! Or else I'll have you tossed into the brig for insubordination!" prompted Vladimir to hurry up and run out of there.[4/6]
>>98759929If looks could kill, the Shen would have been killed 16 times over from all the daggers staring into his back. Twice over from William McCormick. William was still bitter about his demotion. He wasn't happy to be stuck in the Valkyrie now, but if there was one person who had more of a reason to be angry at Shen Chen than William McCormick, it was Vladimir Ignatyev. He had gotten demoted to piloting a Wasp and the Valkyrie which used to be his, had been given to William. William had learned from Vladimir that the Valkyrie had been claimed as salvage from one of his ancestors in a battle against House Davion all the way back in the 1st succession war. It had been in his family for generations. Within the Capellan Confederation however, all mechs technically belonged to the state. While that was true, it was also exceedingly rare for the state to meddle in ownership of familial mechs like this. It left a bitterness in the pit of his soul and he found himself once again fantasizing about crushing the Shen's skull. Shen Chen walked over to the edge to give himself a better view of the port. He made sure to take a spot directly beside Eleanor Gale, standing uncomfortably close to her."Watch closely my dear." Shen Chen said happily, this next mech is for you. Before the final mech could unload however, another mech was seen walking to the Leopard."Hey, what's with that mech?" Morgan Munroe asked. It was an open air question for everyone in the crowd. "I think that's an Orion. Is that Junusz in there?" Everyone looked around and there were murmurs that Janusz wasn't there.Colonel Rafael Montague, the liaison of the Free Worlds League spoke up, having blended into the crowd and gone unnoticed up until now. "Janusz is leaving. He already meets the requirements for a standard Mechwarrior and believes further time here would be wasted.""So he thinks he's too good for us?""I'm not sure I ever even heard him say a single word." Igzael Antwerp-Jones said.[5/6
>>98759941"Well he did lead in damage dealt." Obal countered."Yeah, well that's not really much of an accomplishment when you're in the heaviest mech on the battlefield. Put him in a Locust and let's see how well he does then.""You mean he might do as well as you?""Well he did shoot almost as bad as you." Obal merely smiled back at Igazael, possibly the only person there that could smile like that and still have it be a genuine one with no malice behind it."Well that is why I'm here at the academy."Then it happened. The final mech walked off of the Leopard. It was significantly slower and larger than all the other mechs that came before it. It was a Highlander. Everyone watched in awe upon seeing this mech. A mech known far and wide across the Inner Sphere, yet so rare that even a lifelong Mechwarrior could go their entire life without seeing one. It was a mech that came up frequently in talks about the greatest mechs of all time and it was now here, right in front of them all."It's for you my dear." Shen Chen said to Eleanor Gale as he put his arm around her waist and pulled her in close."It's... a wonderful mech." Eleanor said, doing everything in her power to maintain a neutral tone. "I thank you for it Shen.""You deserve it! You performed very well in the last battle and impressed a lot of people. Still... it did require calling it quite a few significant favors. Favors which I know you'll repay... in time. Don't worry though Miss Gale, I didn't mind doing it and I know you won't either."Somehow, the majesty of watching the arrival of the Highlander was soured that day.[6/6]
>>98759908>"They're screwing with us." Bob Denard commented with a smirk. "Guess you guys will have to wait on that last one." Bob was quickly shouted down by the 4 Mechwarriors from the Capellan Confederation, but sure enough, the next words they heard were saying that there was static and that they were losing the signal.this transitions a bit confusing. it sounds like 'they are messing with us about the mech', not that they are doing ecm. No previous context has been established so its easy to skip ahead and assume things.

>>98759952Yeah, I definitely could have been clearer there. Part of it is when I'm typing these up, the intention is to be quick and brief. Since I know I'll be posting them here, I don't want any part to be too long. This one already felt like it pushed the limits of length for a single part.>>98759964Don't worry, it is. I don't type this up on the spot in 4chan posts. Type it in a document and copy it over in chunks of 2,000 characters or less. Naturally as I reread it here I spot several additional spelling and grammar mistakes. Ain't that just the way of it though?>>98759986I'm not sure what part you're talking about in particular here. I'd have to read some of your work to know what you're talking about.>>98760026Shen Chen manages to have that effect, doesn't he? But whoever said Eleanor Gale is a floozy? Maybe I wasn't clear enough in the story bit, my fault if I wasn't since I do rush these a bit, but my intent is for her to be uncomfortable with what he's doing. How she'll handle it going forward, is something that will be revealed in future parts. My plan for the next part however will be a focus on the 4 Draconis Combine cadets and how they're handling the arrival of the Charger. I want to make sure every pilot gets at least a little screen time between battles and that's tricky to do with 16 Mechwarriors plus 6 NPCs.
>>98760130It's grooming and will be rape.
For the next battle, I'm planning on mixing things up a bit. I'm thinking of doing something like pic related for initiative instead of rolling by side and making strategic in the moment choices. It would add some chaos and might speed up the turns for me a bit. Then I'd just have to think about what each pilot would do when it's their turn and not what would be best for the side overall.
>>98760152Shen Chen is actually the Berserk Rape Horse in a trenchcoat. How'd you guess my big plot twist anon?
>>98759077>whole companythat's the idea. Mechs drop on a planet for some reason, the defenders have at least a company of tanks (so the players can have more mechs)>>98759109it is tonnage. just not how you think. you can fit A mech in a mech bay. or Two vees in a former mech bay converted to a proper vee bay? or some shit. but now you need to haul the AIR and WATER for the four extra guys who are crewing your tank with the tank commander. if you are transporting LOTS of tanks, say 12-24, its not additive, the extra air and water you need, its multiplicative IIRC.so use all the tanks you like. just use them as part of the on planet forces, the defenders.
>>98760130oh so hes a creep? thats a bit weird. I didn't pick up on that at all. Maybe thats something you could clarify.
>>98760178i thought he was referring to some prior arrangement when he said she owed him a favor, that he was sort speaking softly to her so the others couldn't hear very well.
>>98759851the big green machine still walks everywhere.
>>98760175>>98760192its funny how much is implied in a conversation when you don't provide context, isn't it?
>>98760196This. Nearly ran over a hundred faggots jogging at fuck-o-clock in the dark near the fort yesterday before dawn just because I dared to get to work early to take care of some business.
>>98759038yes and no. the standard AS rules let you give buildings CF ratings. so a light mech can stomp through a CF1 building with its fist, but a cf 5? building eats assault mech alphas and laughs, for a while at least.
>>98759038oh, and the aces box has turrets and emplacement tokens too.
>>98760217Man, I remember when they rolled out the black PTs. We are absolutely convinced that someone was going to die because of the night visibility.
>>98760226Doesn't help that only like 1/20 is equipped with some sort of light source or reflector.
>>98759006One set of my terrain.
>>98760235The fuck? When did that happen? Like, PT belts were a fucking meme back in my day, but that's the ONE FUCKING THING they're actually supposed to do.
>>98760237Dunno. Been here since 2019, but yesterday was a very unpleasant surprise.
>>98760242If that's not normal, call up the fucking base. Tell them the location and time, and they should be able to reverse-engineer the company. That's fucking asinine.
Would you marry an Orloffian princess even if she'd rather start a war?
>>98760253See, she's even sabotaging the proposal. The Duke needs a brave, brave man to volunteer.
>>98760257>first the MHL-3MC>now thisWhat's up with Canopians and TSEMPs?
>>98760263They're just not going to be able to beat the ISF on quality, so the cappies are going for a quantity approach as they strive to top the rape dungeon leaderboards.
>>98760178>>98760216It's not like this came out of nowhere. This is from the previous part in which Tetsuo and Shiloh made their deal.>"Yeah, well there's going to be one other caveat you might not like. For this training to work, you're going to have to do everything I say.">"As long as it's training related, I will.">"You think I would try and have you do something sleazy? Now I'm the one that's offended. I mean just who do you think I am, that Liao Liaison guy?">"So it's not just me that gets the creeps with that guy?">"No. I wouldn't bet that he's been staying professional with Eleanor. Some suspicious things have been going on over there, but that's Capellan business. This is merc business." Tetsuo said as he and Shiloh finally shook their hands which had been grasped together. The one in this topic is also the 4th one I've done and I already have the ideas for the next 3 before the 2nd battle.

>>98760281I know I've got no one to blame for it but myself for slacking off on the portrait but I'm hoping Morgan gets more than a one-line cameo in one of them.
NEW THREAD LAZY FUCKS>>98760292>>98760292>>98760292
>>98760287I'm sure he will. I did save the letter you had Morgan write home in the document in which I'm writing all of these, so that gives me a little something to start from with him.
