Anyone else noted that vintage box prices have catapulted? Sets that are almost entirely made of unplayable cards like chronicles and fourth edition have doubled in listing price from what Ive seen compared to a year ago/or earlier this year. Are people really trying to pump n dump vintage and early modern boxes? I cant imagine anyone buying them aside from the premodern dorks, over optimistic scalpers and nostalgia huffers.

Way to lean harder into scalper culture, further enshitifying drafts (I didn't even think this was possible at this point) and completely missing the point on why people don't like foils (hint: it is because they are awful print quality and have been pringles for over a decade now).Urza wept.

Wizards: We barely ship enough product to cover players getting copies of the cards they want to play with. Also Wizards: Stores and players can now have more competition for opening product by adding to the scalper trashfire.
>>98784359I don't see the pic in the article. did they pull it?
>>98784046>>98784142This would make more sense if they did it for collector boosters, since that's already whale bait. Adding it to play boosters just seems dumb, since it's a random risk of ruining a sealed event, and 1 in 1000 is terrible odds anyway.
>>98782429I am so sick of counterspell tribal in standard. You should not be printing two mana unconditional counters and certainly not enough to run TWELVE copies

>>98784530I honestly think this is the direction WotC should have gone with for "land destruction" if we aren't able to destroy land for real anymore due to hurting people's feefees. Although sadly Innkeeper played best when paired with actual land destruction and then using it to keep what few lands they have left tapped while beating them in the face with a hill giant.
>>98784567You're not actually expecting a response, but I'm running the jund sackville list. It doesn't have as much susceptibility to counterspells as other meta lists, but it’s the stupid gameplay. >>98785083It 100% did. Draft -> Open modern playables? Modern players were interested. Open standard playables? Standard players were interested. Have cards just rotting away in your binder? EDH babies would be interested. FNM was always draft. It drew players of all kinds, and incentivized trades at the end of the night because not every player had the same needs. Then when standard would rotate even more trades were made.

>>98784894Theros....I still remember you
>>98785111The really sad thing is, even if you legitimately open the god pack at a prerelease, the correct thing to do is declare it because the store now has to give you another pack. The best possible thing you can do is to declare it - you then get another entire pack AND you get to play in the prerelease and potentially win more. There is no guarantee that your god pack means you win anyway so this line is always correct. You get an extra pack more than anyone else at the event and you still get to play for more. Don't play premodern. Worst format of all taime. Sell all your old cards. Give them to me.
it's always the ones with the biggest collective wallets that are the problem. they buy their way in to driving the boat while not knowing what they are even doing. also applies to mtg audiences
>>98786639You play it in Premodern. You can play Landstill or big mana no standstill.
Only played pioneer and commander, how is standard?
>>98786327>They gotta go back to the drawing board for where they draw the cuttoffthat would be prefire modern, 8ED to RNA
>>98788457do you like izzet or landfall?if not, stay away
>>98788457>Only played pioneer and commander, how is standard?>how is standard?
>>98787623That Standard was actually quite ok. Most decks were honest, and that Aggro Red was at best winning at turn 4.Also because it was easy to build ($) we saw more of it in events so we would play removals and shit that were good vs it. It was predictable af and there were more viable tier 2 decks.
>Phyrexians dead>Bolas dead>Jace deadHow much more of mtg are you willing to watch Hasbro kill to turn the game into the dungeons and dragons fortnite tcg?
None, I haven't bought any MTG product in years and years. I sold all my paper decks. I only play on Arena f2p. In fact, I'm rooting for EDH to consume MTG completely.
>>98789081>Bolas deadWe literally fucking saw him in TDM having sex with Ugin.
>>98789257It was only in your head.
>>98789283Yeah bro just like the Phyrexians getting phased out instead of exploding was in my head.
why am i losing to decks with 250+ cards in them and why do they always have what they need?
>>98789303No. Only the dragon sex was in your head. Because you have such a vivid imagination that you consider pic related sex.

A lot of the negatives don't affect me because I hate their shitty quality foils. Maybe instead of removing all the shitty common foils they could just fix their fucking foils so they stop curling after a single day outside of a pack and sleeve.
So what will be the next kikery to keep shareholders happy?fuse collectors and normal and have them be even more expensive?
>>98789458get rid of play boosters, only collectors and increase their price too with 0 foils

>>98790435I dont play mtg online at all, just paper. Dc is similar to brawl, but with much larger cardpool. Never played mtgo but its there as 1:1 gamemode to paper dc
>>98790431Well you usually end up with more lands on yoir table than in edh
>>98790416I have a positive bias because all of my card collection is on MTGO and DC was introduced there a couple of years ago, so it's convenient for me to play it compared to other 100-card formats like CanLander.without commenting on the current meta since I haven't played in a few months, I think the format achieves what it sets out to do: being a 1v1 commander format where every game feels different with a lot of playable archetypes and commanders, there's a certain push for tempo and control being the best decks but I think that's alright
Canlander is the only playable format
I know you all (rightfully) hate commander but I have a modest proposal: Pre-mander(It's just Pre-Modern but for commander and the cutoff is when the first official commander decks came out in 2013 or whatever)(also Sol Ring is banned fuck you)
>>98790901>hey guys what if we took the worst two formats and put them together hoping the shittiness overflows into a playable format?
>>98789334This means wizards has hit its peak in sales and now can only save money in production to continue the profit line increasing. 1500 cards produced = 10 000 dollars vs 1200 cards produced = 10 000 dollars.
recently got back into MTG after 10+ years to teach my 12 year old son how to play, he wanted the new set for his birthday since it came out the day before so we got some Reality Fracture and played games using that set.turns out you can get 3 mythics out of a single pack, had to look it up but apparently it has to do with how echo pairs work. he got Green Garruk echo paired with Black Garruk, and a shattered mirror Craterclaw Colossus behind them.
I would play pioneer if they banned greasefang

>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG-kFc8ajvARichard Garfield on the card backs for Arabian Nights>I was the bad guy. I wanted different card backs. But my heart was in the right place.>*some discussion about card back in gameplay *>The main thing I was after was making it so that people didn't feel like they had to get the expansion and I felt like if you made it so it's the same card back they will feel obligated to incorporate that into the play environment. That would become the de facto play environment and its untested. It hasn't had this length of testing and I didn't like what that said to the players as I don't want them to feel like they're on a treadmill that we put out cards and that we make a mistake and suddenly the entire game's bad. But giving it a different card back we sorta insulate that we could make it so people could have this authority to say "I don't want to play with those" or "I do want to play with those" and that the cost of players being able to see what cards are coming up--I didn't like that but it was worth it.>It was basically last minute. Might have been these panic calls. I don't know. But I reversed myself and decided to go with the same card back and it was clearly the right move even though my worries I think were not groundlessHe saw clearly what MTG would become.
>>98792804you don't want to play with people using cards you hate? might as well go to /edhg/

>>98792823>has iq 75It's the pushing out set after set and as we've clearly seen in standard within the past 6-7 years where it's been ban after ban every single year making the game bad for everyone to play. And then there's pushing out more and more powerful cards (something Richard brings up later in the interview) that compete with older cards and make them obsolete. What as JotC been doing? Constantly powercreeping it's cards to the point where its formats are bad. Releasing more and more broken cards over which have to be banned every year. Meathook massacre, the mouse, the cutter, later Vivi, and so on. All this to prop up EDH which is all about selling more and more powerful and efficient cards to replace older cards which are only legal in EDH. There are other new formats like Classic Legacy, Peak Legacy, Pre-FIRE modern, and so on that can be played which don't have nearly as egregious commander power creep. Pauper is kinda okay but its still warped by things like Modern Horizons and the excessive post-FIRE power creep.
>>98792887you're only proving that closed formats are needed, not that powercreep is avoidable (it isn't)
>>98792509They said next year's cards will be more fantasy focused. I'm hoping for a full Zelda set.
>>98792926Zelda? Just in time to pick up malding pokescalpers
>>98792943Exactly, they'd go crazy for it and WoTC could overprint the shit out of it to fuck them in the ass.
Based on Maro's Conurrency podcast about future design it looks like we 're in for >2027 3 in universe sets we know about (Nauctis, Kamigawa TB, Zhalfir) and 3 unannounced UBs>2028 3 unannounced in universe sets, 3 unannounced UBsetcBretty much 3 in universe and 3 UB looks like the plan for the next couple years. I will say that for 2029 he only discussed one set, and given UBs take extra time to get the OK from licensors, we may see a reduction in UB by the end of the decade. But that is only speculation rn.
>>98792893The point was about the game being made bad in the last 7 years as JotC consistently breaks the game. Not about power creep in itself. Somehow from after Mirrodin to about 2016 was able to get 12 years of some amount of power creep yet only two bans in standard. Objectively there was some with Eldrazi or quaint cards like snapcaster mage. Yet those standards tended to feel much more balanced even with things like Git probe running around (mono-red tended to keep the life payment decks in check when scars was legal). The worst it was before then was in Mirrodin and around Urza's Saga. Now it's 5-6 bans if not more per year for every year after 2016. There are currently 14 banned cards in standard because they were so format warping. For a couple years it was Izzet at 30% or more of the format. It's taken until now for that to be fixed and that's only because they started to print efficient removal again.
>>98793008You can blame edh for the rampant powercreep as the majority of pre 2013 cards arent balanced for it, but then again you cant blame wotc either for edh getting so popular, yes they were following trends but no company really wants the offshoot that they have no total control over to be more popular than their original game and if that happens then they must acquire it asap and wotc is lucky to have gotten edh (unlike blizzard and dota)Ultimately the solution is to just make closed formats
>>98793008>Yet only 2 bans in standardYeah because letting a card rape the format for 2 years is totally the same thing as the card being balanced.
>>98792994standard can't keep this up, I wonder when they'll decide to call in the quits on the 3 year rotation experiment
nobody cares about Standard, Standard is played mostly on Arena
>>98793054I stopped drafting because standard died in my areaWhat a fragile ecosystem we had
Because EDH replacement Standard. The pipeline used to be Standard -> EDH / Other formatsNow it's EDH -> probably not other formats because they're just too different.
>>98793203Even as an edh player at the time, me and my friends knew wotc moving away from FNM as only a draft/sealed event was going to fuck shit upThe only reason I drafted was because that was the big event every week looks like I wasn't alone
>>98792745Founding the Gatewatch was the first clue about his desire for control.Being phyrexianized was the catalyst the made him want to reshape the multiverse.
>>98793203>Pipeline works from Standard -> EDH but not the other wayStandard died because it's shit. Magic has a long history of making alternative formats specifically because Standard was unplayably garbage so often and nobody wanted to spend $800 on a deck that was going to rotate.
>>98793246founding the gatewatch was a team effort between gideon, jace, chandra, and nissa, the story makes this very clearyet another instance of wotc not willing to commit to their supposed protagonist
GW lifegain seems strong af in limited, maybe that guy just had the nut draw tho
izzet is actually the most fair deck.
>>98793335believe it or not but the most fair decks across all formats have black in them
>>98793335I play an honest budget Izzet Spellemental deck
>>98793321I just played against it twice didn't feel unwinnable desu. I was on BR Stinging Verse/Command the Stage. Felt like I had enough removal to hit the key cards and from there it was anybody's game
Standard died because it is expensive as hell to play. A standard deck should be cheap enough that someone can say>Yeah, I'll give this a tryand buy a deck without feeling like they have wasted 300 bucks. It is a lot easier for someone to drop 60-100 bucks to "try" a format, when the barreri to entry is>Drop 500 USD>Play a boring deck for under 150 bucks if it existOf course your format will die. Pokemon frequently has decks under 100 bucks win big ass tournaments.
>>98793433I love the anecdote I have about standard; during INN-RTR I had mono blue $10 delver and RG werewolves. My friend borrowed delver for FNM and in his first match he beat a guy who had just finished building aristocrats when it was tier 1. He grumbled about bad draws after. The same guy several months earlier complained about me drafting a Jace's Phantasm deck when I went along to my first draft.
>>98793433unlike mtg pokemon enjoys a massive product supply>High collector demand drives massive sealed pack openings.>Surplus competitive singles flood the secondary market.pokemon enjoys this because it's, well, pokemonlefties will never admit this but part of why mtg remains so expensive is because its shitty art direction and libtard writing will never sell to a normie audience therefore it has to be subsidized
>>98793450Pokemon asl did the smart fucking thing and BOUGHT their printers. Hasbro and WOTC (despite MTG being the golden goose) refuse to make that investment despite it being nothing but a good thing>b-but the down timeThey'll do exactly what pokemon does and rent out their printers when there is a slow season. Magic: The Gathering is nothing but a retirement vehicle for the original investors and og creators, as soon as they start dropping, mtg will die.
People play pokemon?
>>98793469no and that's another reason why playing competitively on it is cheap, because there's far fewer demand

>>98793511Outside of rebel tribal this was the only playable creature back then.
>>98793507Scalping saved pokemon. Will it do the same for magic?
>>98793551yesthat's why UB was made in the first place, because the mtg IP on its own isnt worth being scalped anywhere close to pokemon levels
>>98793511(Yes, I'm butthurt i drew swords instead of literally any creature spell to block with)
>>98793551Pokemon scalping is a different beast. Pokemon makes truly chase versions of playable cards. The playable cards are printed into the dirt and even come in starter decks. MTG is trying to half assedly copy Pokemon without embracing the "reprint it into the dirt" part. The day you see 2 copies of a tournament staple mythic in a MTG is the day magic starts to recover.
>>98793580The proxy market at the moment caps the prices of the chase cards at $3 for tournies. The judges cannot spot the difference from the good printers.
>>98792926Zelda seems most likely given the movie's also coming out next year. They've also announced a bunch of other collaborations (including with Hasbro) because of their 40th anniversary celebration, which is starting to make me think it's more likely than unlikely.
