i think robs right. the community at large needs to start talking about putting together some kind of document or set of community rules that let people keep playing into the current edition when GW squats their armies. we've lost several armies in a single edition now, on top of large portions of other ranges.
>>
>>98807353
>What are the BEST looking basic melee infantry of any faction?

deepkin thralls are pretty good, the new nurgle guys and chaos warriors are good. the saurus turned out really well. but my pic for absolute best have to be the arkanaut company. they perfectly nailed their aesthetic, the kits got a shitload of bits, ball joint heads, flat joint arms, several special weapons and the sergeant gets a unique weapon. its a great kit and executed the armies look exactly. if i only had one gripe with the kit it would be the lack of unhelmeted heads, but at the time i think the lore made that kind of unprofessional for them to do, although they seemed to have softened on that since 3e. debatable weather arkanauts actually count as a melee unit, but they all have melee weapons so im counting it.

>What are the WORST looking basic melee infantry of amy faction?

steelhelms are pretty bad. not that i hate the design (although they could use some capes) or the intent, but something about the proportions has always felt off in a way that makes them seem like kids wearing their dads armor.

lumineth wardens are pretty bad only because those pikes are really impractical on the table and can make lining up units to fight each other base to base very difficult mid game, although long pikes are a cool idea, its just a logistics problem.

pretty much all the basic daemons are old and bad.

I do think it’s funny people are quick to drop the
>whole x is actually good! Or y is actually good!
The moment something with actual bones dropped. I’ve always thought mordheim was neat in concept but just frankly horrible in practice. I still like Warcry but it seems like gw just never really gave it the try it needed. I just hope this new game can either support my high fantasy wants or at least is a good enough of a base that I can adapt it into something better myself.
>>
>>98807466
I’d be tempted by the slaves to darkness one but knowing the price is probably $270 I’m passing on it. I’ll see if the end of edition stuff appeals to me or I’m just saving for 5th edition.
>>
>>98807381
Don't the warcraft bugs just serve the lich king? Not nearly as interesting tbqh
>>
>>98807650
>Mordheim comment
That can be said about most GW side-games, they break easily if you take a wrong step and at their best when community self-polices itself. Space Hulk is another beloved gem, yet the actual gameplay is frankly trash. Same can be said other games like Necromunda is another great example where it's so easy to abuse things and make it unfun for others, but if you have self-control and respect for other players you won't do the very obviously broken builds.

We were very lucky with Warcry and Underworlds, for all their problems, and Spearhead was lucky it was made by the Warcry guy. Same with Bloodbowl, even it's S3 somehow did not completely fuck it all up.
>>
>>98807640
it needs something, but as much as i prefered the older editions, just going backwards doesnt work either, because depending on how far back you go, peoples armies and units start dissapearing in the other direction and players with newer armies get excluded.

so it needs to be some kind of bridge ruleset that can staple on to whatever the current edition everyone plays is, but brings forward all of the units that have been removed so everyone can play the current game. i'd even want to go as far as making the old version of cities playable with like the pheonicium or living cities coalitions. a lot of people with cities hybrid armies got the shaft which were very popular in 2nd edition
>>
>>98807704
True, plus there are some core rules introduced with 3rd and 4th that I do rather like that would work great for 2nd edition.

yes and no. the nerubians were a global spanning race with their own separate empires and cities and all that. the ones who serve the lich king are just one of those empires but there are others. you encounter another, azj kahet, in the war within which are still independent and alive, although they temporarily fall under the manipulation of another big bad, but they never end up as undead servants like azjol nerub

like in age of sigmar terms, nagash has armies of vampires and other undead made from humans, but not all humans are under nagash's control (yet)

>>
>>98808409
hopefully never, because that only creates very redundant model ranges, or requires a bland basic aesthetic that only gets a limited number of thematic releases for each flavour, or overpriced upgrade sprues that nobody ends up buying

not to mention the never ending "whataboutme?" that each subfaction's fans would cry every release, and it's already bad enough as it is with all the poorly supported ranges before we get to over explore the already bloated one
>>
>>98809179
if they were actually fleshed out within those books like how ToW handles it, then it might not be a bad idea, but the aos teams formatting and design is terrible for soup.

when i make a dwarf army for ToW for example, i can customize a 50pt thane to be a gunner as good as most artillery, a combat machine to stand toe to toe with the likes of gotrek, a banner bearing buffer granting units valuable bonuses, a tough as nails wall of iron that a whole squad could struggle to bring down, or just a bare bones 50pt chump to support a squad.

i can build the army standard, slayer host, engineers in entrenched positions with scouting rangers and copters, a kings clan loaded to the gills with treasure etc, slayer characters even have two different sets of customization options between runes and tattoos, of which they have dozens to choose from. i can outfit my units bare bones to save points or all the bells and whistles for elite or swiss army knife units. even the warmachines can take magic rune wargear.

in that kind of an army building structure, throwing all the dwarfs in one book isnt a bad thing. but in age of sigmar where the whole army gets 1 of 3 artifacts, 1 of 3 heroic traits, a subfaction thats a single sentence, and no customization options for wargear whatsoever, big soup books really do not work at all. best case you get something like warclans where its basically 2 books in 1. worst case you get what happened to fyreslayers where their whole army was reduced to 3 units as a footnote in someone elses book with no options.

i mean fuck, we dont even get mount traits anymore in most books. this game has fallen far, and i say that as a 10 year fan with 8 armies.

WAGMI (to 5th edition)
>>98807777
"Clearing stock" isn't really a thing. Regardless, this is basically just the heroes of the first forged Army of renown which had bastian + other heroes + annihilators (dunno if you can take praetors I forgot).
They're not squatting any 3rd edition stuff in 5th, the only things at risk are the remaining first edition fatcast things. I expect most of it to be redone in thunderstrike, but some stuff might be lost in translation (like whay happened with the knight venator or lord castellant for example)
But honestly the real question is what happens in 6th edition? Because as long as stormcast keep being in every starter box, we're going to keep having this bloat -> squatting come up every few editions. It's a tough cookie.

>>98809425
How can you say clearing stock isn't a thing when time and time again GW has demonstrated the pattern of putting a unit on deep discount boxes prior to having it go to legends? It costs them nothing to make minis, whereas the cost of carrying old stock is a legitimate concern from a logistical standpoint.
>>
>>98808343
swarm units historically never sold quite well, they only had one formula for a good use for them in game during 8th which was to give a malus to the unit they were engaged with so that other friendly units could fight the enemy better, but gw never capitalised on that, so they're stuck with the idea that swarms don't sell as a rule
>>
>>98809551
they don't keep much stock to begin with and they do runs of lesser performing kits in bundles so that the related moulds can say to have paid for themselves, or have saturated the existing customerbase as much as they could more than to deal with any actual overstocking.
As you say the products themselves cost them nothing so the moment overstocking becomes an issue they can just throw them out.
It all depends on how logistically consuming it is to rebox stock in the first place compared ro producing new one.
>>
>>98809504
Someone did, they even answered some comments.
>>
>>98809551
People vastly overestimate the amount of random old models they have laying around. They made a lot more of the DoK spearhead boxes than they had warlock sprues in stock for example.
Now don't get me wrong it is undeniable that GW likes to put old and badly selling shit in discount boxes, but that's not so much about stock as it is about squeezing some extra money out of a kit, especially if that kit is about to be replaced.
Let's take the old dok spearhead box with warlocks for example, let's call this composition box A. Now imagine they replaced the warlocks inside with more popular bat elves instead and let's call this hypothetical spearhead box B.
DoK players are probably going to end up buying bat aelves anyway, but would they but warlocks if they weren't in a discount box? Probably not, so you end up making more if you sell box A + bat aelves separately, instead of box B + warlocks separately.
Units that are about to be squatted become even more valuable to squeeze sales out of it.
>>
>>98809592
GW put those in every discount box for a whole edition before squatting them.

>laying around
The biggest profit loss GW experiences is the downtime of swapping moulds. The second biggest is warehousing.
If GW put Warlocks in the machine, they're generating enough for a year or more in that window because frankly it is a net negative to their business to even produce it - other stuff sells faster, better, accommodates new releases, etc.
GW have hundreds of moulds and tens of machines. They each produce thousands of sprues per hour, so the downtime of swapping moulds (20-60 minutes) is significant.
TLDR; they definitely hold stock, they definitely want to get rid of it because stock is taxed.

For real, when AOS was newer I settled on two factions because they were things that I thought were cool in Fantasy: Beastmen and (Fyre)slayers.

When Beastmen got kicked to the curb and sent to the minor leagues, I said well at least I still have Fyreslayers. And now with this change? I'm actually fine with it.

Think of it this way: Fyreslayers just got a whole lot of armored dudes added to their roster. Nothing is stopping you from painting the Khazalites in Fyreslayer colors. Nothing is stopping you from kitbashing Fyreslayer helmets on all of them. Nothing is stopping you from playing your Vulkites as Hearthguard from now on.

It's going to be fine.

i mean yea, its a similar deal with the squatted stormcast. a lot of stormcast infantry can very easily be proxied for each other. same with the dwarfs however i am disapointed we didnt get fyreslayers expanded on, seeing the new foothero especially, if we got a infantry unit of guys in that style plus a centre piece and cavalry, couldve been an iconic aos army but alas it was not to be.

i wouldve loved a battle barge that rides on lava and has fyreslayers jumping off it n shi

however i think part of the reason they are turning away from them is that they dont want to pigeon whole an army into a particular environment theme i think. they removed the ogors forever winter schtick and now fyreslayers relegated into their own corner

Hearthguard are ugly and you shouldn't be buying them to begin with, but I would be very surprised to see them go. They're making fyreslayers the elite infantry wing within khazalites. Vulkites didn't fit in that idea, being basic grunts competing with clanshields, but hearthguard do.

Problem is that stormcast are way less of a blank slate than marines are. Marines are really a very non-descript design at its core, in the sense that you can relatively easily make one group of marines "the roman guys", another group "the viking guys", "the hellenic guys", "the vampire guys" etc etc. While stormcast by default already have a relatively defined aesthetic, though admittedly since thunderstrike they've been more generic knightly paladins and less art deco.
So while stormies have some differences already culturally, visually that doesn't translate at all.
Now I *think* you could still differentiate stormies by giving each stormhost (or group of stormhosts) their own patron deity aside from sigmar. So these guys have taal, these guys have morrda, these guys alarielle, these guys have not!ursun...
So you have like "the woodsmen hunter guys", "the muh grimdark reclusian larper guys", "the healer hippy guys", "the bear berzerker guys"
That'd be my pitch anyway.

NTA, the point is that GW likely doesn't keep large amounts of physical stock of unpacked sprues, as that makes little logistical sense. They absolutely do put low selling kits and soon to be squatted kits in combo boxes though. That's because they don't need discounts to sell the popular kits, and they'll want to make sure they've saturated their target market before retiring models. It makes business sense to do what they do with the combo boxes even if there isn't a physical warehouse somewhere to clear stock from.
Trying to explain the logic here, I don't like that they do it.
>>
>>98810034
Speaking of a hypothetical AoS Blood Bowl game, let's imagine what would be the playstyles of the different teams:
>CoS: Basically the same as the Humans from Fantasy Blood Bowl: versatile "jacks of all trades & master of none", Ogor Warhulk as the Big Guy, etc
>SE: THE elite team. Universally high performer across the board... along with per-individual-player price tags that would give a Kharadron a heart attack, even when mitigated by dead SE players having a chance to come back to life via Reforging. Draconith could be the Big Guy.
>Fyreslayers: High-risk high-reward fighters who compensate for their poor defense, speed and passing by simply beating the shit out of the other team with sheer overwhelming brute force blitzing, enhanced even further by ur-gold runes at the risk of going insane due to Glimmerlust.
>Sylvaneth: That one team that you JUST KNOW absolutely everyone is going to whine about being "broken" and "unfair to play against" because of their ability to immobilize your players with roots. Dryads as linemen that can punch way harder than they look if you're not careful, Tree-Revenants as the expensive elite passers and scorers, Kurnoth Hunter as the Big Guy.
>Idoneth: Namarti serve as relatively weak but cheap linemen that protect the Akhelian and Ishrann elites as the former score the touchdowns and the later provide debuffs and placement control through Ethersea bullshit.
>KO: Just fly over the other team, lol. Aethergold tech is expensive and easy to break, though.
Anything to add about those I've mentioned? And any ideas for the other teams?

did they ever actually manage to open their new warehouse? I know it got blocked by a bat nest or something proper retarded.
>>
>>98809819
They're changing Fyreslayers from a standalone army to an elite subfaction. Subfactions don't need basic chaff units that are already covered by the main army, in the same way they don't need 15 unique hero options. Notice KH also have Valayan elite infantry and Golems, not Valayan shit tasters that are weaker than clanshields.

I've been playing Fyreslayers forever so I'm a little gutted, but it does make sense from an organizational standpoint. Being demoted to a subfaction hurts.
>>
I wonder if the energy crises is gonna impact releases moving forward.
>>
>>98810542
Yes anon, they absolutely did. And continue to do so, in order to keep TOW in stock.

Warehouse space is one of the most valuable resources GW has, one of the main reasons they cited for squatting Bretts and TKs in the first place was to free up warehouse space for newer kits.
>>
>>98809697
The point is, people talk about "clearing stock" as if GW is going in and repacking old printed sprues into new discount boxes to clear them, and that 1000% does not happen. GW literally just fucking destroys unused sprues, is more energy and cost efficient for them then that retarded shit would be.

They absolutely do want to sucker you into buying old units you wouldn't pay money for otherwise, but those sprues are still all newly printed.
>>
>>98810862
>repacking old printed sprues into new discount boxes to clear them
Yes. GW uses limited run boxes to shift stock they have in abundance or stock they intend to discard.
GW aren't just destroying unused sprues because they're taxed based on the RRP of stock not the material cost of production. GW stock isn't applicable for redundancy tax write offs so they only get a deduction AT BEST. You're just an idiot with some schizo theories.
>>
>>98810542
They sure as hell didn't have stock lying around all that time for a game they discontinued, if that's your counter scenario.
>>98810649
The bat was at a planned car park at HQ.
They signed a lease for another warehouse due for completion this december, so they're getting increased capacity.

Moulds don't wear until decades and GW hold multiple copies per sprue outside of commemoratives
>>
>>98810900
>Yes. GW uses limited run boxes to shift stock they have in abundance or stock they intend to discard
They do not, and insiders have stated such numerous times. Literally the manpower costs of repackaging is higher than the cost of producing those sprues to begin with.
>>
>>98810900
Thing is spearhead boxes can't really be considered limited runs can they? The fyreslayer one has been a thing for 3+ years now (counting vanguard here).
I can believe the stock clearing theory for shit like the regiment of renown boxes, but for stuff like spearhead etc I think the other factors (maximizing sprue value) are far more relevant.
>>
>>98810994
>Thing is spearhead boxes can't really be considered limited runs can they?
for some they are. They usally get replaced with a new battletome.
>>
>>98810980

I also remember how when TK and Bretts were Squatted, GW shoved all the excess stock into discount boxes to clear it out. Oh wait, that didn't happen because it would be retarded. They simply destroyed the excess stock to free up warehouse space.

>While stormcast by default already have a relatively defined aesthetic
That defined aesthetic is literally hammers of sigmar and Azyrite culture the novels, 3rd battletome, and a white dwarf I believe talked about how the different hosts have different armor styles and personalization. Anvils of heldenhammer run around with a whole bunch of morbid iconography, symbols of dead cultures, and noticeably more baroque armor.

>Now I *think* you could still differentiate stormies by giving each stormhost (or group of stormhosts) their own patron deity aside from sigmar. So these guys have taal, these guys have morrda, these guys alarielle, these guys have not!ursun..
They’ve had that since 1st edition GW just literally refuses to show it and every single named character is a hammer of sigmar except what Gardus and he’s running around in vintage Stormcast jeans
>>
>>98811303
Honestly one of my biggest pet peeves with modern gw is that basically all (battle) art must have every character depict an exact model. It's really stifling.
>>
>>98811303
I’d be surprised if The Hallowed Knights don’t get a character model this edition, Gardus is doing a Dante thing so his model probably won’t get an update unless they make him Lord Commander which they should . Tornus is one I think

The Last Volari is a pretty decent vampire book by GW standards they usually suck
>>
>>98812010
i think people only really cared about him because he was strong on the table. he's kind of a faceless mystery guy in the lore which is inherently limiting on how well you can actually connect with him, and he has since bee eclipsed by better characters in the range like bastian, ionus, yndraste and neave. i havent actually seen a C prime on the table in years. most stormcast players are running other characters. ionus is the one i see the most.
>>
>>98812111
Ionus’ model fucks super hard. It also helps that he’s an AoS OG
>>
>>98812111
I still need to get Bastian and maybe Yndraste, but the one named character I had a fondness for was Aventis (but that's due to me really loving Cities of Sigmar.)

They're fine. I personally don't care much for French's prose, and Cado is a character I find dull. But it does a bit worldbuilding, there are a few cool scenes, and some of the supporting characters are fun. I certainly enjoyed the two novels more than I did the Volari book. There are a bunch of short stories about Cado as well, so you could just check out those to see if you find them at all interesting.

I remember a schizo theory that stated exactly this, but instead by having archaon ascend to true god status himself. Nothing came of it ofcourse.
Also imagine the seethe if abraxia ended up becoming the next everchosen
Anywho, dietrich would be kind of an odd name for a stormcast. I guess we can gothicize it as Theodoric? That works.

I like their lore, it’s probably the most interesting dwarfs have been to me, well excluding some snippets of rootkings and khadrons, but I’m still ultimately not a dwarf fan. I wouldn’t have minded collecting some models if cities of sigmar was, you know, more cosmopolitan, but soup isn’t in right now. As for my opinions of the models, well it’s been repeated already. I like the golems the heros the cannons, and I’m just hoping that there will be an alternative battle line unit down the future.

Wouldn't regular degenerate vampires just kind of be Strigoi and basically be FEC? Unless they do something with werewolf vampires that isn't linked with Vyrkos.
>>
>>98813206
They’d be more like necharchs from fantasy if I remember their lore right. Or that one ugly race of vampires from vtm.
>>
>>98812919
That would definitely be neat. It would almost certainly come with a Vargheist update which would complicate things. Though they did just fuckin' leave NH with the hexwratihs even though IIRC those are a multikit with black knights so I guess it'd be less of an issue
>>
>>98813220
I wouldn't call Necrarchs degenerate. They're like that because they partially feed off of dark magic to make themselves more powerful rather than just blood and it makes them ugly. Not like the Strigoi who devolved into those monsters. I'd welcome the return of Varghulfs to the army. GWE could even differentiate them from the FEC Courtiers with a different sculpt. Maybe one that emphasizes more wolf traits.
>>
Does slaanesh have anything in its lore to hint at new developments in its battletome?

You might be overthinking this
>>
>>98815126
Not big on imagination, are you?
"Th" could be the initial of the wielder's name, or a loved one's name, or (given dwarf culture) some honoured ancestor. Or it could be form the name of a place, where the wielder lives, or where he's from, or some ancestral home. Mines are central to dwarven culture, and so could have a vast array of meanings. It's where they gather the riches of the depths, thus making it the basis of their civilisations. They form the basis of the dwellings, so it's more or less where home and hearth is. A running theme seems to be "all that's worth fighting for".
On top of that between the dwarven culture of Warhammer in general and the Norse culture that the runes are largely taken from all runes have some magic to them. For this wielder that rune may have been what the wise old loremaster suggested.

Now if you just don't like these sculpts then that's fair. I don't. But you just had to try and invent some reason beyond that, didn't you? Gotta get at least one buzzword in there to "show your colours".
>>
>>98812785
Awful generic troop design. Actually irredeemably shit with those little gut plates, the lawn equipment for guns, and those "female" models mixed in. Literally fantasy Votann. The characters are pretty good. The best is by far the queen. The thrynn looks weird to me. I don't like the crown inscribed on the crown. The land boat is pretty cool.
The nuns are alright. I don't like the idea that they barely have any hair though. All Dwarf women should have long plaited hair to go with the mens' beards. The golems exist I guess. Not terribly exciting but not awful. Same for the artillery, very bland.
>>

While the TOW Dwarfs are undoubtedly superior to the new Khazalit Holds, I think you're harping on the wrong thing. For one thing, Khazalid as a language has always been meant to be complex with many meanings attributed to single words or runes. GW certainly didn't set out to make a full language for the Dwarfs, but it's easily the most fleshed out Warhammer language and you can glean a fair bit from what we do have. They have dozens of words for gold that all mean different things for fuck sake.
Just stick to complaining about the armor, the ugly beardlets in the basic infantry, and the leafblower guns.

Realistically though, it'll help them in the long run. Vulkites were hands down their worst looking unit, the one that is constantly memed on, and one that a lot of Fyreslayer players used in minimal numbers or not at all. Literally never having another Fyreslayer discount box that is 50-75% Vulkites by volume is a blessing for them on it's own.

Losing the heroes does suck, mostly because they include some of my favorite sculpts for the army, but Fyreslayer heroes are some of the easiest in the game to proxy. Oh no, I'll use my Grimwrath as an Exile and my Runemaster as a Runesmiter or Flame Keeper, oh damn. The Battlesmith is secretly the biggest loss because he was the only banner heroes. GW kinda hates banner heroes in AoS overall though.

The endless spells I will miss the most. The Pizza Oven is whatever, but the magma spells are peak. They should have fucking kept them.

Still, compared to the mediocre-ish Khazalite Holds infantry lineup the now Vulkite-free Fyreslayers are not looking bad at all by comparison. Even though it's not the move I would have made, I guarantee there will be more people playing and painting Fyreslayers than ever because of this.
>>
>>98815378
No, exactly the opposite, I've played Fyreslayers since 2019 and endured the depths of despair that was watching GW ignore for them for over a decade. Being souped sucks, but it's better than being squatted.

Seriously. I can't imagine liking FS while disliking the humble vulkite. Never once thought they were bad while assembling or painting. If anything I absolutely loved all the detail on them.
>>
What do people here think of the Soulbound TTRPG?
>>
>>98815418
The problem with Vulkites is mostly down to their posing, though some other details like their kilts being flat slabs of wood were also bad. They had cool helmets and weapons, arguably cooler than the HG, but the stiff wavy arm/tiptoe poses looked like ass and the biggest hit to Fyreslayers overall image as an army.

You can like Vulkites if you want, certainly I'm not planning to throw mine away but the Warcry guys are still 1000x better and demonstrate what Fyreslayers could have been if they weren't stuck with early AoS/Late WHFB era plastics, many of which had similar problems. The old SC Liberators all assuming the poop squat being another example.
>>
>>98815418
Exactly. Literally the slayers in fyreslayers. Vulkites are the core of the entire concept

I only just realised but putting a named character in the fucking launch box of your new faction is some classic GW bullshit lmao.
>>
>>98815564
It's okay for a FOMO box, but it's a very stupid thing in evergreen boxes like Spearhead or Combat Patrols
>>
>>98815519
I would have preferred seeing flameseekers-style hearthguards, so that the old hearthguard kit could be retired too and the new fyreslayers were coherent
>>
>>98815580
That's another thing, seeing as the new spearhead box is fyreslayer-themed; you won't actually have a normal intro box for khazalites once the fomo box is gone, which seems stupid.

GW are not really strangers to spamming spearhead boxes back to back, replacing them quickly afterwards, like with CoS for example.

They're going to cut them over time. You have to be high on copium to not see this. You *ARE* the new bonesplitterz.

It's absolute insanity that anyone can defend a corporation selling a $120 box for an army that came out less than a decade ago getting effectively sunsetted, and it's still on store shelves.

This isn't an army going to old world, or an army with extremely old models that just lived past it's prime. It's an army made for this game and is now going away with no realistic replacement, just like sancrosanct.
>>
>>98815519
>Bael Grimnir or his Runequeen daughter
Essential because now Fyreslayers are now not only without a named character but juxtaposed to the Dispossessed who have several.
Either could be on foot or Magmadroth.
>Magmadroth cavalry unit
It's not much to ask. Just something beyond the pity hero and looming squatting threat because BoC got a new hero too.

Those specific drawings are meant to be in bubbles that are maybe an inch across most times. It's okay for those pieces to be quite incomplete since at that size our brains fill the holes. When they pull that kind of shit on larger arts like pic related it's infuriating. Either they didn't get paid well enough or had to short of a deadline, either way the pseudo-impressionism cope for low detail pisses me off.

Like >>98816852 said these ones will 99% be some sort of blurb in the background the size of an eyeball so the details are secondary to the sense of scale it's trying to evoke.
The problem is when they do the unfinished brush strokes in proper art, which I can only assume is due to increasing time crunch or something. Launch aos didn't have any of that and nobody but kevin chin gave even the slightest fuck there, so it must be something else.
>>
>>98816852
I have a few issues with that defence
>the rest of the image, the bits that it's meant to be showing us a closer look at, are just as lacking in detail to the point that there's a lava flow that's literally just a single stroke of pure colour
>even at that size it's blatantly unfinished
>it's by no means necessary to skimp on detail like that as evidenced by all the paintings that didn't
and most importantly
>physical art has a constant in the form of the paper it was painted on and the tools used to paint it, while digital has wildly different textures and brush stroke sizes slapped together with no attempt to unify them, so it looks like it's been photobashed
of course, a lot of it IS photobashed as well, but that's besides the point
>>
>>98816041
nah, def not that big. the golems look like they're on 50mm bases. the chorf bull mechs are on 80s and take up the whole thing.

looks to me like the golems are roughly ogre sized, while the bull mechs are closer to a dankhold or mirebrute troggoth size model.
>>
>>98816903
i've seen plenty of digital art that holds up just as well as any physical art. there are even digital brushes made explicitly to achieve physical medium look that work very well.

the issue here isnt digital vs physical. its deadlines. in the 90s and 00s, a single edition would live for half a decade, sometimes codexes would last for 10 years, so the deadlines were nowhere near as tight. in the modern age, whole editions only last 3 years, with 2x the armies, and sometimes it isnt even a full 3 years between an armies previous battletome and its new one since the order of battletome releases changes every edition. slaanesh and lumineth both had multiple battletomes release within the span of like a single year back during the 2e-3e transition.

Only Pestilens had a book, but there were army rules for running a Skyre army also. 1st edition AoS was kinda messy, some battletomes didn't actually have unique army rules, and many armies only had rules published in the Generals Handbooks.

What would be a better gift? The AoS Ultimate Starter Set or the LOTR War of the Rohirrim starter set? I say this because my cousin and her husband have been obsessed with Lord of the Rings since they were kids. To the point that they got married in the actual Shire itself. Has an entire room with all LotR and Hobbit shit.

You just answered your own question, LoTR.

>Still haven't even finished painting my Ogors from their army set
>Closest LGS has AoS but it's 6 people so far and only Spearheads
Do I even bother buying the army set?
>>

probably the lord of the rings set
>>
>>98818800
Make them hate you, gift them the Ultimate Starter Set and see their disappointment.
>>

>or the LOTR War of the Rohirrim starter set?
This should be obvious but that box is full of awful anime designs and the second army is a bunch of hobos
>>
>>98818805
The army set is just a glorified spearhead.

Anon, that artist is always producing unfinished work it doesn't matter if it's giant art on army boxes, full page spreads, or tiny pictures
Are you a tourists or what? He's THE main artist for 4th edition.

It absolutely does not. The two heroes on the good side look like this
Hill Tribes are film accurate they're just minor and only glimpsed in the extended cut

you do know gw also sells proper lotr stuff, right?

Based. Somebody put the sovl filter on this one

Can't you just get some of the actual lotr stuff for them?

I don't mind them combining the two honestly
>>
>>98819090
I mean, it fits I guess. Would have been cool if the good guys were the ones with were wolves but I guess thats stealing to much from fbs ulric or whatever. Real shame there arent any armies that really "evolve" per say over the course of the game.

I know its just because of the rules but the desolation stuff just feels like an unnecessary handicap than anything else. It also doesnt really make much sense.

Really curious how the new dragon will turn out. Or how the eoe will be handled in general. Will it follow the standard dawnbringers/broken realm format or will we get something like 40ks Armageddon, or maybe something new entirely?
Pic unrelated.
>>
>>98819285
I still haven't understood what we're expecting other than the orc wyvern and whizzfort

is it a chaos dragon or a chaos giant? and aren't they mixing that up with an undead giant? are the undead even getting a giant?

>>
>>98819319
It's a whole mess. The EoE centrepieces are supposed to be cos wizfort (order), claw of gork wyvern (destruction), "undead giant" (death) and chaos dragon for, well, chaos. But then we ALSO have a rumour stating chaos dragon, chaos giant, manticore and chimaera are coming, which we previously assumed was for TOW because of the chaos dragon, but then the leakers stated that AoS is ALSO getting a chaos dragon (after the tow one was already revealed for some time btw) so wait does that mean the chaos gargant and chimaera etc are also for AoS?
Tldr who knows
>>
>>98819336
I don't get it. Why are the goblins in the metal balls?
>>
>>98819382
>AoS is ALSO getting a chaos dragon
It's funny how GW has two teams working discretely in the same studio to develop two near identical iterations of the same model range.

I can only hope they find ways to make them interestingly different or that this is a step towards making the range cross over in some kits.
>>
>>98819407
He knows what he did.
>>
>>98819414
Why is face human looking
>>
>>98819410
I can understand different warriors, marauders, etc to *an extent* because rank n flank vs rounds have different priorities etc but for giant fuckoff centrepieces worth an arm and a leg it really seems like a waste to produce two enormous kits. Though in this case I find the tow chaos dragon ugly and it looks like a bitch to transport so I won't complain too much.
>>98819414
Give him three heads instead of two et voila.
Maybe they do the galrauch thing of having the two heads split in the middle? We'll see I guess.
I'm always down for more dragons.

>>98819431
cos trolls are human looking? somewhat at least
>>
>>98819456
>Give him three heads instead of two et voila.
Not enough, it either has to be completely mutated and fucked up like galrauch, basically a dragon shaped chaos spawn, or it's got to have some weird gimmick like each part being themed around a god, or it being a non-winged dragon like the karkadrak and whatever abraxia is riding.
>>
>>98819472
Giving it options would help
>>
>>98819475
>it's got 4 necks and heads
>one for each main chaos god
>you can glue only one of them
>or you can glue all 4 of them
then we squat the current archaon model and release a cooler new archaon on a smaller dorghar that's back to being a horse but this time the gods are represented by the horse's legs, and he's got 8 this time like sleipnir
