Finally decided to take the plunge into fantasy since 11th ed 40k has been so shit. Picked up these kits at my LGS after playing total warhammer 3 for the past month and after trying every faction vampire counts has been my favorite so I want to start an army for them. I'll post again when they are built and then once more when it's all painted. Once these are done I'll get some zombies and wolves and bats etc...
>>
>>98811484
>Just let me have one of the best core in the game real quick
How about no
>>
>>98811519

What LGS is still selling those old ass fantasy boxes?
>>
>>98811585
If warriors of chaos can have forsaken and chaos knights in core, I can have my faith in core too.
>>
>>98811593
>>98811484
Acceptable only if Empire gets an Army of Renown that bars cannons and artillery, and knights, and has to be led by an Arch Lector.
>>
>>98811586
at my LGS people can trade in old models etc...for store credit so people do that with these old models.
>>
>>98811519
Great, more 40kid tourists, just what we need.
>>
>>98811615

Fine. No Inner Circle knights. Just regular shmuck knights.

Can someone recommend a good paint for brass? There are lots of gold and bronze/copper paints but they don't feel quite right.
Maybe some specific wash to put over gold to give it a less orange tint?
>>
>>98811593
No you can't because flagellants are much better than those as a core option (cheaper, never flee and yet still wreck ass). On top of you having some of the best shooting in the game and them not having any (spear chuckers and memecannon don't count)

>On top of you having some of the best shooting in the game
That’s really not saying much.
But fine limit it to just 0-1 per 2000 points and you can only take up to 15 of them in a block. Also you can’t take steam tanks and chariots.
>>
>>98811484

Greatswords in core if an empire general is the general rather.
>>
>>98811681
That is absolutely saying much. Shooting is good against everything except the most tip top giga meta nonsense.
>>
>>98811692
Shooting sucks. It's weak as hell in TOW.
>>
>>98811710
It's no worse than it ever was in any edition prior to TOW and it certainly wasn't bad then.
>>
>>98811712

Ballistic skill shooting is really weak. There are almost no positive to hit modifiers compared to negative ones.
>>
>>98811710
It has dominated the competitive scene for quite a while, but it does require to know how to play the game. It's only low level shooting that sucks, which is how it's supposed to be.

>>
>>98811716
I really want to understand where you're coming from, anon. Why do you think shooting of any kind is weak? Are you coming from 40k and bringing over wrong expectations? Are you not using your shooting units correctly? The shooting rules in TOW are almost identical to those from 6th. What makes you think shooting is bad specifically in TOW? Are you shooting at things you shouldn't be shooting at, like dragons? Do you understand that your can pay 8 points to give a state missile trooper with a handgun ~3 chances at killing a much more expensive model before they can close in and actually fight him? Are you aware that shooting is how people win games at tournaments, specifically because shooting counters the MSU objective-huggers that are so popular right now? What about any of this is weak? Why do you think shooting should be stronger?
>no positive to hit modifiers
This has always been the case and this is the only thing keeping shooting even remotely fair. The only valid argument for shooting being "weak" in TOW is that cannons can't kill dragon-riding lords, and that's a stupid argument because cannons can kill everything else.

>>
>>98811810
I see now both Vallejo and Army Painter have paints called brass I just couldn't find them in my LGS. I guess they were sold out or they don't carry the full metallics series for some reason.
>>
>>98811860
I'm a secondary that's gotten old enough where having a hobby would be nice. Can you tell me how shooting works tactically beyond reducing damage potential before lines clash?

>Araby has canon black populations
>GW won't develop them as a faction

>>98811937
You could always ask you LGS if they out of stock or didn't order as threy might order it for yo.
I think the Vallejo ones are considered better than the Army Painter but i've not tried both
>>
>>98811860

Based on my experience with games like lion and dragon rampant, I find shooting in TOW to be an exercise of rolling a ton dice without much happening at all. Though units like empire handgunners don't even roll a lot of dice without doing anything. I assume that on a higher skill level of playing, shooting is more impactful. I will grant you that.

I managed to play two great games of Battle March, 600 and 750 points orc mirror.

The first game saw Da Skull Smashas lead by Snagrog face off against the Ironjaws tribe lead by Morgit, a Blorc big boss with his own retinue, hired a trio of Ogres, and a large unit of 28 common goblins lead by an angry goblib warboss!

The battle was swift, Grotfang's boars butchered by the Black Orcs and the ogres were charged by the trio of trolls.

Snagrog quickly got to grips with Morgit the black orc general. Despite wieding the Headsmans Axe, no killing blow could land and Snagrog cut him down. But alas, despite killing both Morgit and the Blorc champion, the big uns were grounded down. Snagrog broke and got run over, AAARGH! This was not helped when Nazgob the Orc shaman, summoned the fist of Gork twice which killed more of the big uns than black orcs!

Da Skull Smashaz lost the first game but took down most of the enemy with them!

The second game of 600 was a more decisive thing. Snagrog once more faced Morgit but his killing blow belted Snagrog fast! Despite this, the triple charge of the big uns, trolls and boars broke the Black Orcs and Morgit and his gits were run down.

The night goblins 3 fanatics ended up doing surprisingly little, one even strangled himself. Although Snagrog fell, da Skull Smashaz took the field!

I like LAF, I poke my head in every so often and just absorb all the cool projects and passion for hobbying shown off in there. I am currently working on a gaggle of projects because I am a fool. Lizardmen, Ogres and my Dwarf hold. Nothing too spectacular or fancy, but it brings me relaxation and comfort. I would get more done if I was not goofing off with the Malakai DLC on TWW3 or playing as Bardin in VT2, admittedly. Any more projects in the pipe on your end, Bro?

I set aside these 20 dwarfs as my fall/autumn project.

This year i wanted to paint more miniatures than i did last year (105 ish). Without realizing it i surpassed that goal in August by doing tons of skull pass, AoW and EM4 dwarfs, so i decided to focus on random characters. I should be at 140 dwarfs painted by the end of the year.

Next year i want to get all of my artillery done; I've got something like 97 crew members painted so it's only fair i get them cannons to fire and catapults to bombard the enemy with.
>>

Nakai! Yes, I know lizards are pretty much limited in current TOW, but considering Nakai's entire gimmick is wandering around until he happens to stumble into a battle that needs him, I'd love to have him rock up into an army list as a "spontaneous ally" or something.
>>
>>98813095
Always good to have a project set in stone to work on, you have a hell of an army and knowing you are still adding to it is quite impressive.105 minis in a year is a damn impressive amount too. Somewhat related, how do you rate the AoE Dwarfs? I was thinking of buying the plastic Rangers they sell, but heard mixed opinions/reviews. Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff painted up for sure, especially some artillery!

I bought the whole AoW dwarf range 2 years ago (they usually run a 50% off black friday deal).

I like them. They have a very "6th edition warhammer" look. But then again... I'm a sucker for dwarfs and I rarely dislike miniatures.

They're al chunky bastards so it takes a bit fonessing to rank them up on 20mm; if you use 25mm you won't have issues.
Their slayers are regular hard plastic and were a lot of fun to kitbash into having all sort of weapons. Anyone who has dwarf shold buy at least one slayer kit from AoW if nothing else and i will 100% buy them again.
The only nitpick is that their weapons are retard level oversized, but this just gives you reason to use all your leftover weapon bits.
Their other dwarfs are PVC multiparts. Some people hate it; but to me that wasn't a problem. I treated them as metal models, but lighter. People complain about having to use super glue so I experimented with using PVC glue.
It was absolutely not worth the mess. Then i decided to use E6000 and boy did it make a world of difference.

My only advice is to do sub-assembly: they have some detail that become frustrating to paint if having to go around . Pic related are their warriors.

To anyone wondering about these models i say: wait till December for their sale and get a box or two of the slayers. If you're a somewhat experienced hobbyists and are ok with working with non hard plastic models, get also a bix each of all the other dwarfs.

Okay, I’ve got the plot. I’ll talk shop as a GM to show I’m not just an ideas guy. First session? Night of Blood. Excellent way to introduce the world in a darker way than, say, Ubersreik Adventures. After that they’re doing “Through the Drakwald,” but since this is 4e/5e the reason for Untergard’s destruction is the rise of Khazrak in 2512. Of course, I don’t want to use Khazrak overtly because campaigns should never use named characters that don’t have statblocks, so I’m going to make it Drexol the Extinction from EiR. There will be a botanist studying the incredible bounty of this new strain of wheat, and during the refugee train north they’ll talk to the PCs and build rapport. Bingo bongo, they get to Middenland and Power Behind the Throne begins, complete with the withered warrior-king taking orders from a Grima Wormtongue.

The idea I’ve got is that the Bad Wheat needs to vernalize for the nastiness to develop, which means the first year the crop does exactly what it says it does; amazing yield and disease resistance. I’m not going to ramble lore so from Power Behind the Throne I’ll have enough setup between PC backstory and world development that the rest will make sense.

aos dorghar has clawed hand, wings, hooved legs, is monstrous in size, and you can easily cut off the heads to replace them with your choice of upscaled dwarfen head
but the arms are humanoid rather than giving a quadrupedal impression and the mini is an overdesigned oversized mess
a khorne bloodthirster gives you something of a better size and design but also requires a replacement of arms, in addition to the head
for actual quadrupedal monsters another big overdesigned option is the slaughterbrute, the chitinous skin (easy to reframe as rock-like with lava during painting) would probably make slapping hive tyrants wings on it fitting, and those shouldn't be too hard to get
you could also get a manticore or chimera and replace the feet for hooves instead of trying to look for creatures natively with hooves, these two are also conveniently chaotic, and with enough fur to make a headswap or conversion with a dwarf head fitting
mierce miniatures' manticore is larger, better posed, more muscular and probably easier to covert to have hooves in its feet and a humanoid bearded face

What is your army list and what problems are you running into?
>>
>>98815315

This is what I used today
>Noble with full plate, shield and halberd
>Mage with warden of saphery, battle magic
>2x10 sea guard
>10 swordmasters
>5 sisters of avelorn

With a couple of magic items and that was it. Overall I feel archers are not very good because yeah, you're hitting on 3s but then you're wounding on 4s or worse so I think I'm ditching the sisters for the upcoming games.
And elite units don't perform well. Yeah, you can kill 5 enemy models with the swordmasters but as soon as any enemy unit hits back, you're cooked.

I have the feeling I'm doing everything I can, not forgetting any rules and pretty average dice rolls and yet I lose pretty consistently. Hell, an empire captain on horse held down the remaining 7 swordmasters + mage for a couple of turns on his own without losing a single wound

>>
>>98815339
Thanks anon for that. At a very simple glance, I don't think its to do woth you as a player but your army comp. It's not that it is bad in principal but your unit sizes are appallingly small. This means even the most minute losses cripple the units effectiveness, from general numbers attrition and combat resolution.

At 750 I suggest dropping one of the heroes and bolster the unit sizes at a minimum. I am not a high elf player but even i know the value of bodies.
>>
>>98815408
FUCK
>>
>>98815533

Yeah, I was thinking on leaving the noble at home and bringing just the mage. A lot of people says mages in smaller games are not worth it but the empire mage wiped out almost an entire unit of sea guard on his own using pillar of flames.
I'll try leaving the sisters at home and making the rest of the units bigger. Or maybe adding a small unit of cavalry, I felt I could use some movement in the army

I was listening a bit to Andy's stream about Kairos, when I noticed he said one of his heads only saw the past, whilst the other only saw the future; in 40k it is stated that one of Kairos' heads only speaks the truth, whilst the other only speaks lies.

>>
>>98816080
Both are true.
One head sees the possibilities of the future, the other analyzes the past. Often leaving him blind to the present.
And when asked for guidance or wisdom, one head will answer truly, the other will tell a lie that's equally believable. It's not said which head (past or future) speaks the truth, nor which speaks the lie.
It was notable that when Kairos spoke to Lorgar, both heads spoke at the same time, the same message.

One thing that happened and that no one talks about is that right after the end times, GW sent out tens of thousands of agents to break into players' homes to physically prevent them from playing the game.

These agents stole miniatures, tore off pages from rulebooks, hacked phones so that players couldn't text each other and organize games, they infiltrated FB groups and discord channels deleting every message of people asking to meet for a battle. You see, people wanted to play this game sooo badly, but GW was stopping them from enjoying their hobby. Nothing at all anyone could have done to play Warhammer because GW actually stopped all of us from doing so.

People loved this game. Many had invested thousands of hours and dollars into an army; but GW was in direct control of their actions so they couldn't play. How GW does it is a mistery but to this day they retain full mental control on most of their customers.

Similarly, GW has started doing the sane to people that play legacy factions.

Then GW and CA come along and pull some pants on head retarded moves, like having pure chaos units like Things In The Woods being part of their army roster.

When people speak of Kislev, and of a main source to tackle the faction, it's mainly RotIQ, 6ed. Kislev supplement, or Total Warhammer 3.
I've never read a person mention Kislev - The Claws of the Great Bear; a series of magazine articles, created by Tuomas Pirinen, which by their own right (imo) could have been compiled into a supplement book (like 4ed. Chorfs).

I don't really care if they used some machine assisted design or did it all by hand just care that the end model is good. Wish we had more third parties making proper proxies though and wish perry would give a go at it for fantasy again. tfw I'll never find someone to play something Napoleonic with.
>>
>>98816914
I've never seen CADslop models that look better than hand sculpted models. It's like something gets lost, something the machine can't replicate. I hate to use the term "sovl" but it seems like sculpting digitally makes it impossible to enshrine the model with a soul. Similar to how it doesn't matter how lifelike AI robots might become someday like on Bladerunner, they still lack a God given soul.
They are essentially golems, looks the same as a man but it's missing something important.
>>
CAD sculpting allows you to add an excessive level of detail that you can never achieve with traditional sculpting.
The temptation to over detail models and create impossible poses is simply too intoxicating and no one can see to resist it.
Literally every CAD model every created is too busy and invariably looks like shit

I used to think that too but napoleonic players are literally everywhere. They just play in clubs, which usually meet at some lawyers personal home wargaming room instead of playing with strangers at an LGS. You just have to know where to look to find your local club and then reach out.
>>
>>98816810
My vision is that the Nurgle cult gets away with it. How do you track something from seven years ago? Maybe they kill an agent of the group but these things are like the Purple Hand; too big to kill, too connected to unravel. My vision of the endgame is either going to Kislev or Stirland to appropriate grain before a crisis sets in. I figure those places didn't get the miracle crop because they’re shitholes. Kislev would end in fighting trolls and Chaos up north while Stirland would be Necromancers - I’ve got this lovely vision of a Necrofex colossus made out of a windmill, with the giant milling stone repurposed into the thing’s right hand. Such fancy is beyond what I should be concerned with, any good GM knows the effort should be on the next 5 sessions, not the next 20. I’ve soured too many campaigns on being too forward thinking - like Kairos, if we roll back to the conversation at hand!

Anyway, the Gotrek and Felix omnibus is good.

>>98816971

>>
>>98816941
That's not CADs fault. CAD just makes making miniatures easier, so retarded art directors decide to cram a ton of unnecessary details or put ridiculous poses on them. It's also easy to make small heads and hands so models move away from the heroic scale bc that makes them look so much more modern. This literally sucks the sovl away from them, yes. But it's not CAD's fault, there's a retarded human behind every one of these decisions

My last game was a siege game. Final battle in our summer campaign.

There's rules from 3rd, 5th, 6th snd 8th edition for sieges. But the truth is that warhammer as a game does not lend itself too well for sieges.
Siege games are more aspirationally fun than actually fun. It requires the right people and tons of preparation and the game itself ends up being very clunky, drag out and very anticlimactic.

I mean, they can still be fun, but it's not something you can improvise, visuals are half the enjoyment so it really needs fully painted armies and terrain.

The best version of warhammer siege in my opinion is the 8th ed one because it's the one that best integrates the siege into the regular rules of the game.

It sucks I can't share PDFs cause i have the rules ready to be shared.

NTA, but really you just set your roads to be 5 wide, you can have standard infantry blocks move at rank minimum, and city fights are closer, bloody affairs. Skirmishers would work much better, and would allow them to be much more mobile. The Tactical challanges are there

Cool historical village, not a Warhammer village tho. Where are the baroque buildings with skulls, twin tailed comets, and other imperial iconography? But most importantly, where are the walls? With the exceptions of some hamlets and homesteads nearly every empire settlements have walls, why? Becuase of the myriad of threats surrounding them in the forest. Even coaching inns have walls for fucks sake! So until you post a proper settlement befitting the Empire I am (and presumably most sane Anons here) not interested in your vane attempt at shitposting.

Yeah, it's normal fantasy stasis, but instead of stopping right before they get gunpowder, they stop right after. At least it's not a retcon, the Steamtank was built hundreds of years ago. Although they have and will continue to retcon things without care. Pretty sure the dwarf axe throwing thing is supposed to be a later invention. If Skaven ever come back they'll have to retcon half their shit, as most of their iconic weapons have were invented by Ikkit, and have dates for their invention in the 6th edition army book, most of them being invented after the great war.

Semi related I think it would be cool that if when they refresh State Troops they went back to the old 6th matchlocks for the guns instead of the wheellocks that the later plastics have. That would be a cool detail, but sadly that would need someone at GW to have a IQ above room temperature.
>>
>>98818303

I thought the reason for the stagnant technology was the retarded, red-headed stepchildren of chaos, or beastmen keep the empire in a constant low level conflict that makes trade and peaceful development really difficult.
>>
>>98818317
That might be GW's hand wave excuse, but I don't buy it. Nuln is a big city with a whole engineer academy that goes back centuries, and it's only been sacked a few times that we know of. Have the other major cities even been sacked? I don't recall Altdorf ever falling, and Talabheim and Middenheim are both incredibly fortified. The small villages in the forest and boarder towns might get destroyed often enough, but there are large areas that are mostly peaceful outside of active chaos/ork invasions. There are people in parts of the Empire that don't even believe Beastmen are real, and think it's just rural peasant myths. If Beastmen were enough to keep them stagnant then they would of never even got to guns in the first place. Leonardo founded the engineer academy right in the middle of this civil war period, so while the Empire was in it's literal worst state possible it was actively advancing.

You are not fitting 125mm through that gate house. You are not turning a unit of 20 infantry through that crossroads (or hell, I doubt youre fitting them onto that street).

You should note that your information is outdated, picrel is from her recent run of kickstarters which are all about redoing her Regiments line in modern proportions using digital sculpting, they are distributed as STLs or print-on-demand.

Vic certainly got her start as a physical sculptor, but so did plenty of people who now sculpt digitally and produce heinous garbage, which was anon's point: every medium has issues, and a sculptor is either bad or good. All that's changed is the same thing that's changed with all creative professions: the internet lowered the barrier of entry to *publishing* your work so far that it's now the chore of the end user to wade through the 90% of anything that is trashslop to find the 10% decent stuff instead of some luckless management goober at a company somewhere.

And there are plenty of good-to-okay not-WHFB sculptors out there; Vae Victis(modern work, their back catalogue does have a few stinkers), Reptilian Overlord, Monstrous Encounters if you like the Middlehammer aesthetic, Old Realm Forge if you fancy Oldhammer Dwarfs & Greenskins, Longsnouts for Bonner-esque Orcs, even some of Highlands' stuff isn't terrible. At the end of the day if you want to step outside the GW bubble you need to be willing to put in at least a little effort to find alternatives, and just chucking a bunch of keywords into Cults3D & MyMiniFactor and spending a while browsing through the results is hardly toiling down t'pit is it.

As you know those articles were released on Citadel Journal so, unlike 4th edition Chorfs or 6th edition Kislev, 5th ed. Kislev did not have the notoriety or benefits that WD articles had.
Which is a shame I think, because Pirinen did an excellent work expanding Kislev, using what was already there for 4th ed. and using further Russian inspirations on top of it.
4 years later, GW & WD would make a lot of Pirinen's additions irrelevant.

You're both wrong. Named characters are AWESOME, and have always been since prior editions.
Nothing should nor would stop you from making your own custom characters. But named characters are also important, not just to narrative games but to the setting as a whole. Especially for this setting, since TOW has been working more like a sandbox, with its stories being an afterthought; quite unlike previous Fantasy editions.

To be fair it's a spearhead + tome, it's smaller and cheaper than the usual army sets. Same thing with the chorf army set from last year.
Problem is that they put the battletome in there which fucks the value since gw made them overpriced as fuck (£40 now). So technically it's a good discount but in reality it's only barely better than buying everything separately if you don't care about the tome. Which you shouldn't to begin with but even more so in this case as 4th edition is about to end.
>>
>>98819427
Trying to argue anything by GW is a “good value” is a moot point. But AoS is especially bad.

Warhammer Fantasy would make it dangerous for shortstack enjoyers because Halfling women also come with built-in cuckoldry. They basically fuck everyone and anyone, they have no concept of property. Dwarf women would be really funny because the severe gender imbalance of Dwarven society means any Umgi with a Dwarf-wife would get a ton of angry Dwarven incels on their ass.

Lamashizzar imported "dragon powder" from Grand Cathay and used it to turn the tide against Nagash in the battle of Mahrak. Fast forward a few hundred years to around the time when Lahmia fell, it seemed Lahmia was still the only city that traded with Cathay for firearms, and the rest of Nehekhara had not been able to figure out how to produce it themselves. And the size of Lahmia's stockpiles was a guarded secret. So firearm proliferation was definitely not a widespread thing at any point in Nehekhara's history.

Makes a bit of sense, out of all the cities, only Lahmia and Lybaras were even situated to have trade fleets in the east, and as the smaller and less wealthy city Lybaras might not have been the obvious port to peddle goods in.

This also inflames my autism, but I think having constant stagnant boarders during an age of civil war would also annoy me. I think part of it is you never know what's a change on purpose, vs what was done out of pure ignorance. Like did they know Eilhart is part of Reikland? I would guess they do, but it's placement looks a bit off, it looks like they put it on the confluence of the Schilder and Reik when it should be farther upstream. Also I don't know shit about Sudenland, but given it's a Sollander movement it bugs me that they have all the land west of the river Sol, which I assume is the traditional land of Wissenland. I don't know though, are Sollanders ever a thing anymore, do they even have a cultural identity, or is it just larping nobles who are using it as an excuse to grab land? When reading Sigmars Heirs I just remember it talking about the whole area of Wissenland/Solland as monolithic Wissenanders.

I actually love Ale-Spoiler and Crowhorn. I think I’m gonna work off of one of those, thanks!

I think your shitposting, the Tombking stuff has all been good. Chaos stuff was good too. The fact that the Bretonnian Foot Knights were designed, approved and released still leaves me traumatized though, so I'm still anxious about any Empire or Bretonnian releases in the works. Since thoughs factions are routed in history and realism I feel like they're the easiest for GW to fuck up.

They're overdetailed just like everything nuGW does. They lack the charm and correct vibe for WFB. But I guess this is TOW now, not WFB, a wholly sloppified nuGW property with oversized centerpiece models and bad digital sculpting.

And just FYI, people don't need to give specifics in order to not be "trolling." Enjoy your $0.01 from Nottingham, though, fagnode.

Its just the usual shitposter trying to bring down the thread

I get the feeling they were made when TOW was a nobody-cares project inside GW and the diversity hire got assigned a project they didn't care about. Everything post release has been really good.

“Here’s my custom kitbashed general. He’s a proxy for Karl Franz.”
Wow that’s so hard.
Pic is the rogue idol I use in place of Kragnos in AoS

We love our half-blind druidesses, our peglegged dwarfs, and our Nordlanders with slashed sleeves and conspicuous codpieces, don't we, folks?

I don't think ikit invented those.
The mark of chaos game let skaven have the cannons, and that game was set shortly after the great war.

Holy shit, that looks amazing!

...are you disappointed you don't have niggers and she-warriors to shitpost about? is that we've come to now?

Mark of Chaos is a great game. I love duelling with the different heroes. Its like its own sub game within a game. The Chaos champions though are busted though, chugging out 4-6 damage per hit with Curse of Chaos procced. Warboss is still my favourite though abd can win with well timed headbutts.

I wouldnt call it good. Just inoffensive. To me its just straight up boring, but idk I dont worship GW enough to delude myself to seeing the kits as anything more than they are. Maybe them being largely the same thing is a good thing, but I havent seen something that has been really worth what they have replaced. The chaos knights however are such an offensive replacement that genuinely bothers me.

It's very odd you'd post that image, when the new skeletons look more like it than the old ones do?

It's crazy coming back to this board and the GW internet defense force always comes in a pair. Like they're sitting there in Nottingham at the social media desk. "Ah, we must counter-signal all criticism." Sad.

>he books confirm that Dwarven women are immediately identifiable as female and aren't described as ugly
The depiction the male dwarfs made of their women begs to differ.

Nah
I would rather have a more in depth custom character maker than see named characters
Im happy for named characters to have models, I just dont think they should need custom rules beyond say character maker
