you know what I fucking HATE
dual wielding
every single mini with two pistols or two swords looks like liquid shit and has a retarded pose because it's not something that can actually be done

Were the customers biased by Drukhari being literally entirely sold out for four and a half months starting BEFORE their codex release so that literally nobody could buy any of them and then releasing a Maelstrom combo box that got recalled with no replacement because they fucked up the sprues?
>>
>>98853130
Two-handed weapons are ass to paint around though and way less dynamic to model because they limit possible poses too much.

Emperor's Children are lucky they didn't get kits wasted on "cultists". Only Deathguard seems to pull it off well because they kept it to one unit in a large well rounded range.

Zombies also just work really well for the whole "dudes devoted to the god of disease" thing. They fit thematically, versus Tzaangors who are just bird guys. They don't even do magic. Jakhals are at least psychos who run at you with a melee weapon, which tracks for WE.

Do you think the Biggest Boy will ever get a redesign? It looks so out of place next to the ones that have actually had to be updated for models, but when would they bother? That actual titan-combat game seems dead and it may have even been too big for that anyway
>>
>>98853179
This is a sacred cow people really aren't ready to give up, but Thousand Sons in general are a very poor representative of Tzeentch.
>>
What's the deal with Genestealer Cult and Votann? I never see them mentioned, like ever
>>
>>98853183
>redesign
the whole FUCKING POINT of having different worlds produce different patterns is that there need be no redesign
simply keep using both old and new versions on the tabletop and in art
of course GW is still in retarded mode and goes so far as to replace old art with new, worse, digital art of the new model designs
>>
>>98853186
Too insignificant and too new.
>>
>>98853184
A little bit yeah, but it's fixable with the right units added to the roster. I don't even hate the idea of the Tzaangors or the robot thing they got last edition but they really need more kinds of spellcasters in general before even thinking of adding stuff like that.
>>
>>98853186
they’re inherently very small scale, so any mention of them would be purely local like a votann corporation raiding a mining world or genestealer cultists causing an uprising on a backwater planet. nothing to really make grand statements about or big army movements like you could for marines or orks.

>>98852206
No, it's a Firstborn proxy for 6 Eradicators
>>
>>98853207
Yeah. The cult legions really should've been supplement books with a few obvious restrictions instead of codexes. Like if you're gonna make their launch ranges that tiny at least let them pick through some CSM units to cover all of their bases.
>>
>>98853011
Are great axes as cool as they look?
>>
>>98853207
Chaos as a super faction is propped up entirely by CSM and Deathguard. All the other factions are in a bad way in one way or another. Demons and TSons compete well but their ranges are ass. WE and EC are stillborn. And CK is just a fucking mess of a spam army compared to IK.
>>
>>98853186
Votann get a little throwaway line in every campaign book that they are there fighting or mining (or both). Like there's a votann merc band on Armageddon fighting the Orks.
>>
>>98853231
CK literally isn't an army
Wardogs and Ruinator, with weapon variations are the entire range you have to choose from
>>
>>98853236
No, they can choose normal knight models too
>>
>>98853241
Wow so you get a whole 6 models to choose from
I actually quite like Knights but there's just so little.
I don't know why James won't develop more models for other factions rather than recolour marines for the millionth time
>>
>>98853135
drukhari have always sold really poorly, so they're at the bottom of the production list. it's not the chicken and egg situation serial-whiners like to imagine.
>>
>>98853231
Chaos gets narrative significance
Xenos get model range significance
Space Marines get both
Other Imperium armies get screwed
>>
>>98853246
You're right, but GW has done them no favors over the years either. I was there at the 5th edition relaunch when stores literally could not get stock of their range for over a year after debut because of half the range in finecast was only available by direct order or constantly being recalled due to quality issues.
>>
>>98853246
DE were actually quite popular after they got their 5e reboot before once again being neglected.

Man I keep forgetting to make a guide for the gold. Still, this is what I basically do
>basecoat Retributor Armor/TTC Dragon's Gold
>shade using a 1:1 mix of Magos Purple and Gore-Grunta Fur, doing more passes for deeper shadows
>you can also use a warm, dark brown to shade the absolute deepest recesses but I rarely bother
Now you want to build up the highlights towards the parts that would actually reflect light on a metallic surface. You can take a couple reference pictures of your mini under a light source coming from an angle you want and cranking up the contrast. Eventually you'll get a feel for it. Metallics are somewhat more forgiving to layer so what I usually do
>1:1 mix of Retributor Armor/TTC Dragon's Gold with Liberator Gold/TTC Glistening Gold
>highlight color on its own
>1:1 mix of the highlight color and Canoptek Alloy/TTC Platinum Crown
>edge highlights on upwards facing and most prominent edges using pure platinum color
>>
>>98853245
Unfortunately marines just sell insanely well always. I wish other armies got more attention too, but GW is a business and marines keep the lights on for them and then some.
>>
I know we all hate marines and our hipster tendencies reign supreme, but bro...Black Templar and CSM are looking super cool
>>
>>98853292
Marine hate isn't necessarily because we think the ranges don't look cool. Most of us agree and also collect marines of some kind or another. It's the incredible lopsidedness of support that GW provides for Marines that is annoying. And then even more annoying when they get their guaranteed starter box every edition and they use it to just make lazy resculpts that don't even look better than the models they're replacing. I don't care as much that Marines get more models than everyone else, but they're not even good models most of the time. They are models to have just for more models sake for people to buy so that there is more Marine product for marine players to buy.
>>
what the FUCK is Deathwatch
It feels like marines get a new army every nanosecond
>>
>>98853303

>>
>>98853292

Brief popularity after a refresh is normal. Orks are getting it now. Consistent updates, additions, and restocking are prioritised by the factions that sell well outside the honeymoon periods. Deldar were a problem they were trying to solve with the ynnari soup.

Deldar are just the problem child in general and I'm not quite sure why. They launched them in 3rd and then abandoned them with no updates to rules or models for 14 years. Then they put a ton of effort into them again in 5th before abandoning and axing the range as soon as the Chapterhouse suit concluded and then started the Ynnari thing before abandoning that too. Seems like they're ramping up to something with them again but who knows what.

This is literally for the guys. We need your help.

Hi, I'm Elle. I currently sit at 35th in the world in Drukhari, and am the highest ranked Drukhari woman competitively. I've been talking to a lot of other female players and a lot of us are struggling right now, so I want to have an open dialogue about the state of our game in terms of how we are welcomed and accepted into the gaming space.

In North America, there are less than 100 female competitive players out of 17,000. That's less than a tenth of a percent. Go to any female tiktok or instagram where we share gaming or painting, or our joy of the hobby and what you will find is some of the most vile, vulgar, insulting commentary you will see. This behavior isn't isolated to online.

So, from us to our male counterparts. What do we need to do to get your help with managing the toxic men in the hobby. We've stood by and watched so many in our LGS's continue to allow sexist and homophobic comments that make us not even come into the stores. We've proven that we are just as good at the game as men, and still we struggle with being accepted in the space. With that said...

What do we need to do to get better support in our local communities?
What have you seen work in your spaces?

We want to be here. We love this game, and we love being a part of the community when it is welcoming to us. That is becoming more difficult to find these days and some of us are struggling finding a way to keep playing with the way things are right now.

>>
>>98853439
Old editions have lots of problems people complained about too. Ultimately what it comes down to is that even with their problems the older editons (pre-6th) were comparatively better at being narrative war games about battles in the 41st millenium instead of the board game trying to be a video game wearing the rotting skin of a war game that newer editions became. If you expect really intelligent, tight rules writing neither old nor new 40k will deliver but if you just want to smash dudes together in the 40k universe older editions will probably be better.

4th is decent. Notably an improvement in army construction over the current system. Terrain is usable without some of the awkward rules in the current edition. Would like to see a backport of the 5E dark eldar book since it's peak DE and 4th is marginally better for core rules.

Would recommend it over 9-11e easily.

Yeah lucky current 40k doesn't have these. Especially lucky it doesn't have even more of them due to even more releases padding rosters. Doubly especially lucky GW doesn't keep releasing new box sets with junk units that don't even go together.

It's true though. 40k can never have anything interesting or paradigm shifting in the story because it will affect profit. It can never be too grimdark, or have models that aren't family friendly, because that will affect profit. I could go on about the artistic void that is 40k but I digress

Thanks! I don't remember the exact steps for the plasma honestly but I'm pretty sure it was something along the lines
>incubi darkness basecoat
>thinned down white into the recesses and at the very bottom(oil paint would work great here)
>layer/drybrush brighter colors(kabalite green-sybarite green-gauss blaster-white) on the coils
>dots of pure white on top of the coils for a "gloss" effect
>edge highlight with one of the brighter paints around the coils

>blood angel box
did they forget a unit? or are the BA models that overpriced?

even as GW's strongest space marine paypig this shit looks disappointing. I guess all that money has to be spent on friends and family this holiday season instead.
>>
GW is apparently worth ~$5.8 billion USD with ~$800 million dollars of gross revenue, and $250m of operating profit. They can't cut prices and give deals or else shareholders will be more unhappy then they already are. They'll just release another primaris character and primaris refresh and call it a day.

Its the price of convenience anon. That's how they justify it. For example I was looking at finally getting my first contrast/speed paints, and the Vallejo "starter" box is $90cad while I can individually buy the same paints for $50. Citadel one is the same. >>
>>98854030
half the problem with e-sports is EOMM, which warhammer can never have. so it's becoming the worst of both worlds.

Balancing e-sports for the top 1% only works if there's a matchmaking system that lets the other 99% trick themselves into feeling like there's a reason to play the game because they will eventually get to that 50/50 winrate. But warhammer just doesn't have the playerbase to have a matchmaking system, never mind the problem of having to meet at a physical location with models. so we get the anti-casual bullshit of weekly updates to the app, which is the "correct" way to play the game casually. and the updates are only about the play of the top tournaments. but you get literally nothing in return for playing the game casually.

as much as people complain about EOMM, psychologically it works for casual players. when you have good matchmaking, you attrition players in the top 1%. when you don't have good matchmaking you attrition players in the bottom 90%. there have been studies on this in COD. GW wants to turn the game into an e-sport, but the way they're going about it is going to kill the casual 90% of the playerbase because they get nothing out of it but being farmed by the top 1%.
>>

Model sales operate on having shitty rules and updating them constantly so paypigs keep chasing the meta and codex churn can keep rolling. Its been this way for 20 years anon. Entirely wrong premise by the way. It's been hinted the the tyranids are fleeing something else and are eating a snack along the way to gain strength.

And even if that's not the case since it was just hinted at, an animal simply eating food to survive literally is a motivation, it's the foundational motivation behind all life. The second one is to reproduce, which with tyranid's biology they're actually linked to each other. They make new bioforms by consuming biomass. So a creature that has it's eat instincts and its reproduce instincts intertwined it of course going to be a ravening monster.

And even that isn't the whole thing, since we know the hivemind is pretty smart when it gets enough members. It makes new bioforms to counter enemy strategies, it uses strategy and misdirection and even spies and subterfuge. It's not actually "mindless", it's smart.

There is literally nothing wrong or bad with nid's writing and some of you people are operating on false premise/ignorance in just saying so.

hive minds naturally can’t have conflict within itself which is what gives depth and motivation to a lot of characters/factions. this means their conflict must come from the outside, and then further it’s extremely hard to write motivations for why they’re at conflict with another faction because they’re meant to be a super intelligence that knows all, and doesn’t have infighting, so there’s no way you can have them be necessarily irrational about their actions or be tricked in some way, so it naturally means that the reason a hive mind wants to get into conflict with another is to expand.
>>
>>98854258
god I hope they don't go in that direction.
Tyranids work best as a completely alien creature that's eaten an unknown amount of galaxies

Trying to make them "run from something bigger" or "created by the slient king" takes away everything that makes them cool
>>
>>98854245
Actually, you are wrong. Previous tyranid codecies did present that as in-universe speculation. Never, ever get a bad attitude while being wrong, it makes you look like a complete faggot. Being wrong is fine since we're all here to learn, but the second you act like a faggot while being wrong you just turn unlikable. i am primarily a fantasy and aos player. i have an extensive collection of fantasy daemons and chaos models.

1: can i field my nurgle daemons with chaos space marines in 40k? or do i need to use the deathguard codex? i have some mortals i want to use for possessed of nurgle (the old fantasy blightkings kit of which i have 20)

2: can i play my daemons in horus heresy? one of my friends is really into HH, and i'd like to join them but i dont want to drop cash on that game because its pretty expensive for something im not really interested in collecting (regular marines dont do anything for me. maaaaaybe i could be talked into dark mechanicum if thats a thing but i'd rather just use my daemons if i can)

You’re gay and don’t understand it. It’s not a collective consciousness, it’s not a mind made of minds. All the bioforms we see are like white blood cells, the Tyranid is one single body spread out across space. What’s in our galaxy right now is just one little tendril of THE Tyranid, singular.
We don’t need gay little talking bioforms.

it used to be S tier for CSM because you used to get the 5+ crit whether you rolled your pact or not, but now you have to roll the pact to get their detachment bonus, and that's really a long shot.
pactbound has something like 20% win rate at the moment

I think what he meant to say is you have to pass the dark pact test to get the bonus 5+ Crit. So you'll only really benefit from the detachment rule 50% of the time. But it's a super simple detachment for a beginner to use so I say stick with it. The Eye of the Gods Strat is super cool and if you get lucky you can have a completely roided out lord by the end of the game.

That's what the old version of pactbound used to do
take a few mortal wounds sometimes and always get the fat pact
but in reality outside of that you only roll dark pacts in a few fringe scenarios when it's not on units that get an extra buff out of it (btw, helbrute goes great with pactbound) or can reroll them ("chaos icon")

My LGS and many others STILL have their old chirstmas and launch boxes for several different factions.
Is there any actual source on if or where these boxes sell? You used to get a decent deal for a psycologically convenient number (£80 - £100) etc.

Now, the boxes cost around £120-£160 depending on the box and usually involve kits that you do not want.
>>
>>98854768
Most chapters probably have enough to equip most of their 1st company. That's like 100 suits per chapter. If we go by the old 1000 chapters, that's 100,000 suits of armour. So 1 suit per 10 Imperial worlds. Having a couple of squads at any one location doesn't make them super common.

And other lies you tell yourself before GW says they're making marines even stronger citing "lore accuracy" as the reason for the change while not keeping consistent on that principle.

As long as you clearly identify what is what before the game begins I don't care. Maybe it's a difference between mindsets, but I like minis to clearly represent what they are. having done some maths getting lucky on higher damage shooting feels more reliable. even fully-supported (ironstorn w/ gunnery honours, incursor scan, ignores cover from something) the gatling cannon is just over 5 devs on average plus a couple of normal wounds. you could expect similar damage from an 85 point las fusil eliminator squad with less outside help.

>>98855260
I don't care about the math.

It should never be the case that you're hoping the dice are in your favor to kill *battleline infantry*, especially with units specifically meant to kill battleline infantry. Custodes as a whole just need to go if this continues, as-is they're too much in every direction that indicates bad and un-fun game design.
The point of the game SHOULD be to engage with the enemy, not to run away from him while making sure your "run away" path includes the magic circles you need to get enough points to win. Play-fighting in the wargame should be the goal.
That is my point.

>hoping the dice are in your favor
By this, I mean the "getting lucky on higher damage shooting" point, not in general; it's obvious that you want the dice to be slightly "in your favor" for all rolls. My point was the degree of how much that favor goes.

>>
>>98855293
My cope is that current custodes are an experiment to see how customers might respond to actually-elite space marines in the next edition. Would smaller armies of their best-selling faction destroy the company, or does it actually move a lot more plastic to the kids/poors who can't otherwise afford 2k points right now.
>>
>>98855323
It would certainly cause a lot of us who don't play marines to consider other games entirely, which would absolutely hurt their bottom line.
Not "destroy the company" bad, but enough that they'd inevitably walk it back a bit to try and keep some of the non-marine players on the metaphorical plantation until the next big thing.
>>
>>98855323
I think custodes are fine right now but I wouldn't like marines to be like current custodes.

If you base coat your CSM in the trim color, you can just fill in the armor panels with the main color and then have plenty of mental energy left for the skulls and flayed skin and hazard stripes and shit.
If you don't want to paint 100 guys that all look the same, you definitely don't want Tyranids; setting aside the chaff that's literally 10 packs of the same model, the main visual interest anywhere in the model range is the various horse cock guns, other than that it's wall to wall three colors and a base.

Typically, yes, the cooler guys get more time and effort spent on them than grunts, but usually that takes the form of the model itself having more tchotchkes on it, or bothering with edge highlighting, or maybe a bit of kitbashing as a treat, but even doing an 80% "good enough" version of that guy's paintjob on the horde end of the army is going to take an unreasonable amount of time and an airbrush—look at the depth of color, the gradients, the cantaloupe-y veins everywhere

>must play the game as how the card packs say so, no homebrew missions etc

this is (one of many reasons) I like orks so much. makes me feel like me and the boyz are hand in hand painting their little bits of armor and vehicles with me out of universe, and then they’re painting them in universe.

I don't know what's wrong with me, but it always turns out looking awful. I don't know how people are so good with greenstuff.

Use Tamiya epoxy putty quick type, let it cure for a couple minutes so it's not as sticky, use silicone sculpting tools and wet them frequently.
After that it's just practice.

I didn't fix a slightly bent base before gluing the model and terrain on, and now it wobbles. Reckon I'm going to have to use putty to lengthen the base rim on the raised bits. Might be a pain to do but I don't see another way around it, it's too late to heat and unbend it.

Anything can have visual interest if you manually put it there. A pack of basic bitch intercessors could be glorious if you painted them as Angels Resplendent with iridescent blue armor and freehanded per-model pieces of fine art on their right pauldrons—this guy's got the Mona Lisa, that guy's got The Oath of the Horatii, etc.—but that's in spite of the models and entirely on you.

Take a sheet of 150ish grit sand paper, secure it down on a hard, flat surface (like a granite countertop or a porcelain tile or a piece of glass) and then place your base down on that and begin sanding taking care to keep the base flat to the surface as best you can.

The fact that they're a colonialist empire segregated along racial lines among themselves—including a literal master race whose word is so unquestionable the language itself doesn't support giving them lip—and who are taking up the blue man's burden spreading their ideology at railgun-point to every new-caught sullen species they can lay hooves on and will send you to a reeducation camp if you step slightly out of line, and half the fanbase has media literacied themselves into thinking "oh, these are the 'good guys'" is fantastic, actually

I had the exact same thought, but when I ran a reaper shooting at a squad of termies and custodes through some math it was just ok. Same with the leman russ punisher. The upside is that it's also good against boyz mobs and some other random things so I do think it's ok to take as long as you're not falling below a certain anti-tank threshold. Like if the Lancer you're replacing mattered then don't.

I ended up with this at the end of the day instead, which has a Valiant instead of the Reaper. I tend to err on the side of lots of anti-tank so some Knights player or whatever doesn't get a free win, and I will try leaning on 10 Hellblasters with Sustained 1 when I see termies/custodes.

https://www.newrecruit.eu/app/list/m5Cgf

The speeder that removes cover and the repulsor that lets them get out and benefit from Rapid Fire and Sustained 1 yet being safe from charges are some other key things. I like this list.

1. A lot of the stuff that makes them interesting only exists in fluff, and there's barely any worthwhile fluff; it's just Assassinorum Kingmaker, the codex, and a couple of other novels that IK fans will try to convince you are good, and Chaos Knights literally only have their codex—even LoV novelmog them
2. On the crunch side, they're functionally super-duper-heavy tanks that could only ever reasonably work in a combined arms doctrine, and them being their own army demands that they be balanced around you mainly running models from your army and not Guard or Agents or whatever, which is about as fucked as trying to balance Guard around making an Oops All Baneblade Chassis list viable
3. On the MtG psychographics side, Knights is a very Timmy army, but a lot of other armies don't really have anything comparable for Knight players to play Pacific Rim 3: The Return of Christ against for the maximum Timmy experience, and they only have a handful of datasheets that all correspond to different builds of the same couple of kits so the list building aspect is rough for Johnny, and they're very swingy competitively, so Spike either cares or doesn't.
>>
>>98856987
