There was a novelty to it at first but it’s kinda shown it’s a shitty format to deliver on. Also the magic changes were kinda awful to keep track of, do people actually play with it?
>>
>>98853220
>>>Thread question:
>How do you consider the Arcane Journal format now that it's been around for a couple years?
terrible on all front except for gw's flexibility in releasing shit without having to rely on making new editions of the respective army's main book, or white dwarf articles or online pdfs which are always a hassle to keep track of.

But all in all is absolutely shitty because the low number of pages means there's very little content, it's often written so bad it reads like a bot asked to fill in space by rephrasing the same text over and over, and there are already too many to keep track of for some armies.

If they want to keep going with the journal format they have to introduce either a yearly compendium for the previous ones, or make new editions of a certain army's book whenever there are more than 3 journals for it.
>>
>>98853213
if they are pre-selling the preorder date then they have breached their stockist contract with GW, there was a store in London that had all GW stock withdrawn for doing it.

Unless you're a GM or just really into the lore, not really, it has way more Stat Blocks than the Sylvania one, and there is an adventure in the back.
It probably should have had some player stuff in it, but I'm really not sure what they could have added to this one.
Unlike the Sylvania example, where there is a ton of player stuff to add related to Vampires and the Eastern Empire that could have been used, all the player stuff related to Nordland is already published in other books

Not really, at this time Kemmler is still out of the picture.
They are building up on old lore which stated that Nehekara used to reach all the way to Sylvania and Athel Loren, with many burial sites remaining undisturbed after Nagash's spell.
The issue here is that, GW is always inconsistent with its lore, and there's way too many civilisations buried around the old world, some with overlapping concepts:
>The ancient burial sites of greater Nehekara, most of which escaped Nagash's spell. The few that came back to life and we're pissed about it. In at least one source they're called the Barrow Kings.
>The burial sites of the barbarian tribes that lived when Sigmar was around. They buried their dead in full battle gear and have more of a late Bronze age vibe. These are the Armies of the Cairns that the Lichemaster went around molesting back in 6th edition.
>The burial sites of the primitive tribes that first inhabited the old world. Stone age people, mostly located around Sylvania and pretty much fully dug out already as cheap fodder for the vampire counts.
So yeah, Kemmler's exploits are entirely separate from Settra's expedition and I don't think GW will really want to go for something more VC yet. I'd love to have the Cairn legion army list back, but it's more likely that we'll see a much less interesting tomb kings list with a gimmick or two.

>>
>>98854614
Depends on the point value being played.

Battle March (500-750) can be an hour or less if you know what you’re doing. 1000 point games can be an ~hour and a half to two hours, with it getting longer the higher you go.

I’m not sure about this timed setting thing, no store has ever hassled me to hurry up.
>>
So it's near impossible/ unplayable to have a monogod daemon army? I never liked how mixed daemon armies look like
>>
>>98853527
There is never going to be a second edition. They’re just going to revise it forever because that’s more sovlful and what the people who this game is made for want.
>>
>>98854880
>They’re just going to revise it forever because that’s more sovlful and what the people who this game is made for want.
Delusional. TOW will conform with the 3-year cycle like the other settings.
It won't even be like HH, whose 1st edition lasted 11 years, and since 2ed. has adopted the 3-year cycle. TOW 1ed. is already running its last semester, and next year they'll certainly release 2nd..
>>
>>98854699
It's possible, it'll also be shit and mind-numbingly boring.
Of all the legacy factions, Daemons seem to be the most afterthought list. They made sure the main units had stats and that was it.
I do like multigod armies, though, particularly if they're colourful. Brings me back to the good ol' days.
>>98854880
Wargames as a live service is something that I didn't expect but also didn't surprise me either. The good thing is that old editions are already set in stone and can be played at any time, the bad thing is that most wargamers are neophiliacs that simply won't touch older stuff.
>>
>>98854699
Battle march could be the place to run something like that. Yeah, as daemons you get like 4 different units per god, but BM is so small that it would let you take one of each and not notice how limited the army is.
It'll still be a shitty army, though.

You clearly misread what I'd posted. I said, 6 months from now (at the earliest) they will release a 2nd edition.

> just reprinted the entire Rulebook with errata 2 months ago to last for 5-6 months.
Doesn't mean shit. Those errata were released from free on their website as well, and - it seems to me - they happened to make a quick buck in reprinting the Rulebook with the freely-published errata into it.
TOW was official released on the last week of January 2024, and the latest errata was revealed in the last week of July of this year. There is nothing and no one stopping GW from releasing 2nd edition next year; even if it's been less than a year since the revised 1ed. Rulebook's release.
>>
>>98854645
I mean in like a tournament
>>
>>98855069
There is nothing and no one stopping GW from releasing 2nd edition in 4 years. See how pointless your reasoning is? You don’t give any actual reasons as to why it’s concretely going to happen, you only state that we’re on a 3 year cycle and imply that it’s self evident. Yet there’s evidence that goes against any refresh next year, namely the reprinted book. Reprinting a rulebook for 8 months with the FAQ isn’t making a quick buck it would be a waste of resources. Them reprinting means almost certainly that 2nd is still years away.
>>
>>98855096
2000 point games usually take 3-4 hours. I’ve never seen tournaments time people but then again I only play TOW and MESBG and only locally so there’s never a need to keep time to prevent slow play. If someone is being an abusive cunt intentionally slow playing or being an unsportsmanlike cunt we simply don’t invite them to the next event. That’s a plus of being more tighter nit and smaller than the 40k community
>>
>>98854645
Points are almost irrelevant, it depends on the number of units played, the type of army and of course how well the players know the game.
>>
>>98855222
It’s really only down to how well both players know the game. Two veterans with massive armies can finish faster than one or two noobs in a game where everything has to be explained or talked through.
>>
>>98855230
Sure but two veterans with 1k armies that have 8 units with shit to do in every single phase are going to take 3 times longer to finish a game than they would with 2k armies that have 4 units with 2 spells and no shooting.
I have a 2k army of brets with mounted knights only and my games are quicker than my1k games with TK that has every type of unit and does shit every single phase and has multiple bubbles I have to keep checking for all the time.
>>
>>98855179

>>
>>98855422
nta but it did happen to HH.
I'm not saying it going to happen to TOW; I think the revised rulebook means the current edition will stick around for a while, but it being a mainline studio game is not a shield from the edition change every three years.

not sure who you are listening to but skeletons are the most meta unit in the TK. Blocks of archers for mortuary cult or the cohorts for royal host are in every tournament winning list for TK. They are unkillable tarpits you can dump priests in and the archer blocks with the amulet of the serpent for poisoned shots are still one of the best range units in the game.
>>
>>98853660
Wrecker's Point was obviously something they had in mind since at least Salzenmund & Sea of Claws, but plausibly had a rough concept of since TEW. That it released now and Sylvania came around first is a bit odd, but whatever.
>>
>>98855854
They first announced it as a PDF, so it was probably going to be much smaller initially
>>
>>98855681
Nigga look up tournament lists. Infantry horde blocks are the literal TK/Undead meta. In royal host you use like a 100 man strong mix of skeleton warriors and archers as your main unit.
>>

Here's the secret: Revised/1.5 is 2nd edition. They're just calling it "Revised" to keep grogs who want long editions happier. It literally launched in a new starter set with Cathgay and Chaos.
>>
>>98855681
TK can win with shittons of skeletons. But it's not very fun to take a block of 40 skeletons. Also, while the new TK stuff is advanced on a technical level, they are now far more complicated to paint than the previous skeletons, who you could drybrush and wash 100 of in a day or two. Now they each have shittons of fabrics and details. So I kind of agree, you probably won't enjoy things unless you're specifically a huge WAACfag who enjoys the dopamine rush of winning no matter how excruciating the actual gameplay is.

Cathay are such a fucking disappointment. I'd always been curious about the little tidbits of lesser-covered areas in the fluff, ancient China, the Mongols, Mughals, etc have always been fascinating to me, and when they started expanding on them, the idea seemed neat at first. I even liked the aesthetic for the most part. Dragon children and their part human spawn, seemed like fertile ground to do warring states stuff, oppressive regimes like vampire counts with a value on the 'greater good' of fighting chaos, maybe the emperor would be pitting his children against each other violently to temper them to make them better against the arch enemy... And instead it's just, conflict-free, utopian, shite, where they were actually involved in everything the whole time, they invented gunpowder, they're more civilised and older even than the elves and have never faced any major civilisational fractures ever! I have no idea what GW was thinking. I'm a huge China mark but the execution is such an utter failure I can't be bothered with them
>>
>>98856946
Yes, BL was a mistake and the lore should have been confined to the codex, 40k especially suffered from this
the solution is simple; everything after 1999 goes in the trash

>>98857190
can you name those TOW sources? couldnt find any.
my point is that TOW exclusive lore is rather paper thin at the moment, so just because there is no infighting mentioned in the arcane journals, doesnt mean there isnt any.

You do know this is supposed to be the period of civil unrest and infighting that leads to the monkey king taking over, right?
>>
>>98857445
Not him but is the Monkey King meant to be so strong he can actually contend with the dragon children? I know he has that big magic stick but...
>>
>>98857460
Presumably, yes, he's also immortal and has been said to outsmart them at times, especially during these times of supposed disharmony.
The latest journals added more to the story, but of course it's still fucking nothing, we have got to wait for total war to bring him in.
>he's immortal
>he wanted recognition from the dragon emperor
>got gifted a circlet by the dragon, but it was actually a control device
>he still gets to wrest out of the circlet's hold from time to time, especially when the emperor is away
>the fire dragon of the south is meant to contain him but he's ordered not to retaliate against him by the emperor
other than it all being a reference to sun wukong we have absolutely no info on how this character came to be in the warhammer world
is it another deity from ind?
a bastard relative of the dragons or moon empress?
a chaos mutant?
the top figure of a race of apes made by the old ones and just built different?
just a man living amongst monkeys?
>>
>>98857484
Well thats cool, its nice have a semi antagonistic character who is powerful but not another Chaos villain. I look forward to seeing the inevitable mini and rules. Would be funny if he had inbuilt Spectral Doppleganger to emulate his infinite clone magic.

yes, if there is no TOW source that mentions dwarf and elves infighting, its meaningless for this setting. of course WHFB factions have more lore than cathay since they existed for 30+ years. the upcoming black library book seems to get into some infighting among the human cathayans.
>>98857569
not knowingly. tzeentch shenanigans were involved.
>>
>>98857916
>the upcoming black library book seems to get into some infighting among the human cathayans.

lmao
no

they're not ALLOWED to show cathay as an actual society with depth, they had plenty of opportunities across multiple journals and not only they missed each and every one of them but instead they doubled down on the tone-deaf wank of a seemingly utopian nation, in warhammer of all places.
they could get 60+ years of publications and still they will be stuck as this same level because it's not a lack of focus but a completely different direction altogether, one that's fundamentally antithetical to the spirit of warhammer, most likely for the sake of courting a chinese market.
>>
>>98857287
The core rulebook doesn't have cavalry, it was added later in the Empire in Flames supplement. Iirc, most warbands can take a mount (and wagons!), but not all of them horses, orcs for example are restricted to boars.
It sounds great and gives you the chance to model your characters mounted and on foot, but it's Mordheim, so the implementation is somewhat clunky and requires more open table setups, which kinda beat then purpose of the game.

Correct me is I'm wrong, but it seems to me, when it came to Kislev's users of Ice magic, that the "Women Only" thing was a retcon from WRP2's book Realm of the Ice Queen.
Up until (and including) the 6th edition Kislev book, it still mentions Ice Mages & Wizards.
>>
>>98858463
The retcon happened before the WFRP book, apparently
Andy Law said he wanted to include a reference to that male ice mage, but GW wouldn't let him so it's something GW did before they made the WFRP splat, maybe in the Ambassador Chronicles books

Rob got some shit from the wider community like two years ago. He was mean to the youtuber Miscast Trent (acceptable) and manufacturer Ramshackle Games Curtis (unacceptable)
He was and is a landlord who rented space to a few different independent miniatures makers in Nottingham. Eventually, he wanted the space back to use as a podcast studio, but the lease wasn't running out soon. So he chose to "be really mean" to the tenant, Curtis, until Curtis voluntarily broke the lease and left early. Curtis is a well liked personality so this registered as Very Mean when the story broke.
At a later date, him and Trent, the youtuber, had a falling out. Absurdly, the image-concious Rob supposedly physically threatened Trent to the tune of "you have to act like we're buddy buddy in public because us not getting along is making me look bad and upsetting my girlfriend"
His girlfriend, of course, being Louise from Rogue Hobbies (a third reason people hated on him. "It should have been ME dating Louise", they cry)
So when Curtis and Trent came out with the story it was a little firestorm. The evil landlord who bullies independent manufacturers and threatens to beat you up if you dont play friendly in front of his autistic 4chan girlfriend.

This story is pathetic drama that would already be very silly if it were teenagers, but the dramatis personae were all over thirty. I'm gay for knowing any of this, and now you're gay too. But you asked.

The Blood of the Bastion AJ went out of it's way to dispel/retcon the "Cathay is perfect with no problems" lore.
It goes into various issues within Cathay, the Dragon Children and the main conflict of the book is Miao Ying going full "Decisive Tang Victory" by purposely letting thousands of soldiers and peasants die to trick a bunch of Chaos Warriors to march into a kill box.
>>
>>98859086
Yeah >>98859200 described it better than I could have.

Val is a little cringy but in a fine way imo, I don’t mind a little cringe. Despite still being a comptard, he at least seems to genuinely like the game and the community so thats enough for me.
>>
>>98859200
Thank you for the summary. What a cunt honestly. Though what made it ok to be mean to Miscast Trent? Landlords of his nature are naturally despised. As for his girlfriend, what is she sexy?

Overall though of all Youtube dramas, this definitely feels more "normal" than some of the shit you sometimes see on the usual nonsensical drama.

I looked this up and I am uncertain of anything in that battle could be considered a decisive victory.
>>
>>98859260

>>
>>98859248
>Though what made it ok to be mean to Miscast Trent?
Nothing, sorry. Just a tasteless joke, I was just playing the "mean 4channer". Trent is a nice enough dude who's done nothing wrong, but Curtis is a REALLY well loved manufacturer/event organizer so people came out in support of him more strongly. Like kicking a dog vs kicking a puppy, they're both obviously wrong but one really incenses people.
Louise is indeed hot, but more importantly she used to browse 4chan where she posted her orcs and tzeentch demons on /wip/ while larping as a dude. When she revealed herself as a woman, people went "holy shit there was a hot girl posting here the whole time and we didn't even know" which leads to her being one of the more waifued Warhammer girltubers on this board.
>>98859260

Magic resistance, bringing a level 4 to dispel, and murdering enemy wizards as fast as possible. It also depends on what you mean by magic missile spam. If it's one wizard with a lot of magic items that give him guaranteed magic missiles, he probably won't be that much of a threat if you play around him, especially with the new miscast table. If it's a couple wizards with a few magic missiles and a unit champion or two with bound spells, then it might get a bit bothersome. Just remember that they can't cast magic missiles if they marched on that same turn.

Eh back in my day you’d have to buy a blister for a character on a horse, and a blister for them on foot (usually there were exceptions ofc). And after you factor inflation into the mix they really aren’t that much more expensive today than they were back then. Although they were metal, and I prefer metal for the hand feel when playing
>>
>>98861642
they should definitively come back, unique regiments being essentially collective special characters was one of the best ideas that GW ever had, but they should make all new regiments of renown instead of simply remaking say the birdmen of catrazza or the leopold's leopard or at least they should do updated versions of these regiments with darker, more serious lore and get rid of the light-hearted, whimsical humor of the 5th edition book
>>
>>98861650
Back in your day was also back in my day. And even then they were overpriced and out of reach. If it weren't for the older kids dumping their collection as soon as they hit 15 to get some drinking money, i don't think i could have ever stuck with this hobby.

I plan on printing some spare hero models and such but want to buy the base boxes to support my shop.
>>
>>98862387
The Battle March is pretty good value, so getting 2 for around $90 would also be a good value. But apparently the Battalion is on Amazon prime for $165, which is an even better deal.

Can't really go wrong other than playing Wood Elves because they're pretty bad. But if you don't care about them being bad then have fun.
>>
>>98861642
The problem with bringing them back, other than the completely unappealing situation of modern prices for metal minis (at around 60£ per 10 models), is that many of the units that made the dogs of war were "special characters" that existed at the time of karl franz rather than the period the old world is set in, which is a relatively small obstacle as a few retcons to make them models for generic archetypes of those units would most probably be hardly controversial

the absolutely best thing they could possibly do is bring back the old range in the form of a made to order run and then release a few plastic kits to represent the key units and aesthetics of the army

>pikemen in full armor (head options for estalian conquistador helmets and for tilean grecoroman helmets)
>crossbowmen with pavises (once again, head options for morion helmets and some other tilean hat)
>tilean birdmen
>estalian diestros
>small artillery piece pulled by horse
>paymaster wagon
>mercenary general on foot and horse
then the rest of the army can be made up of other existing kits, like dwarf warriors and slayers, goblin infantry and cavalry, badlands and imperial ogres, giants, wizards, knightly orders, chaos marauders etc.

I think it’s quite funny that Cathay gets the furries when it’s tomb kings that need the visual variety in their army with some flesh and blood creatures. As it stands the range is too dull from a conceptual stand point never mind taking the models into account. Fucking hell even mummy swarms would do some good for them.

those prices are a choice gw makes every year because it will sell anyways

I'll always have a soft spot for the Old Skellies but I'm wondering if I should actually get some modes for them to pay respects (I won't, I'm not made of money)

I'll say the design team article saying "we gave them armour" misses the point that they shouldn't really have armour or breastplates to better represent the time period and ancient Egypt vibes but thats a minor quibble

I look at Nu-Hammer, and it leaves me cold.

This is gay.
It has no way to not be gay.

They could perfectly reproduce Warhammer as it was when I was a child, and it would still be fucking gay.

Because the intrinsic gayness of the people making it now just leaches into everything they do, like Typhoid Mary, or women pissing out their birth control chemicals into the water supply, or food that was prepared without washing your hands.

It's just tainted.

There was a time when I would have been happy to see my childhood living on through other people.

Zoomer take. Warhammer has always been silly at its core. Even the darkest parts of the setting, like Mordheim, have always made the absurdity of the setting very evident.

the Brets in the old era were literally GrimDumb, just relentlessly stupid over the top Grimdark edginess into absurdity and that was the point

They are 7pp, have T4 (which is more than other units of their comparison have), can have dual weapons or a shield, they can also ambush, switch between open order and skirmishers mid game and so on. Then they have primal fury and all that that could entail.
Gors are pretty neat overall in my opinion. Fun to build too, lots of room for conversions and later on; color schemes.

Warhammer fantasy is at its best when it’s tongue in cheek mixed with dark and gritty themes.

TQ: I hope that whatever form TOW 2e takes, they go back to Armybooks. The Arcane Journals were fine for what initially looked like a limited, low budget revival of the game but TOW seems to have expanded far beyond that.

I'd much rather have Armybooks and premium 150+ page campaign books than a never ending flow of mini-books with rules and lore scattered across numerous books, with more than a suspicion that random rules are thrown into unrelated Journals to make you buy them.

the restrictions dont affect me in any way and I can play my list as usual just with better chariots, which is based. also access to new spell lores and etheral skirmish archer is cool and the new upgrades for horsemen maybe even makes them not completely shit. will have to try out.

And I couldnt give less of a shit about kemmler and VC-fags. people who were thinking they would become a core faction or part of the TK-roster were completely delusional.

>>
>>98864771
>completely delusional.
Yeah it was mostly hopium, which makes all the whining so obnoxious. Nobody said or promised it would be backdoor Vampire Counts.
>>
>>98864845
I don't think anybody thought it'd be Vampire Counts, just that the options may reflect the existing lore and choices. It's a "barrow" army in name alone. The rules don't have any room for Simulacra (AoI can't take Ushtabi which could have stood in for Simulacra) or Glooms, and they restrict your Tomb Scorpions.
>>
>>98864873
>I don't think anybody thought it'd be Vampire Counts
People were legit making straight up comparisons and saying things like "ethereal carrion can fit in for Glooms!". People definitely thought that.
>>
>>98864891
Right. There was some expectation that the list would have anything at all to do with existing Barrow Kingdoms lore and have some leeway for proxying. But no one expected actual VC rules, particularly because the old Kemmler list wasn't VC at all but an amalgamation of VC and TK models to make a necromantic undead list. GW should have called the AoI something like Chariot Vanguard or some shit. Calling it Barrow Kingdoms is kind of a bait-and-switch.

In terms of generic lords, where exactly would a Doombull land in respect of Chaos Lords, Ogre Tyrants, Warbosses and other big hitters?
