>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre. Let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet & Dropzone Commander,
Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Full Spectrum Dominance, Gaslands, HeroClix, Kings of War, Lords & Legends,
Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam,
SAGA, Sahipkıran, Sludge, Space Weirdos, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sword Weirdos,
Urban War, Void Admiral, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Death Reaper Games,
Goblin King Games, Lucid Eye, Mantic, North Star Military Figures, OnePageRules, Osprey,
Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

Mix. I've git more fantasy stuff and do more fantasy but that's as a result of starting with whfb and friends preference, I like both.

Anyone tried the Warcry's lead designer take on Mordheim already?

>>
>>98903832
Last thread had some interesting thoughts on why it won't replace Mordheim
>>
I've been thinking about Dropzone Commander recently and I think it's insane that if I wanted to buy some Scourge minis and play 3.0 the only things available are some infantry or a pretty built army that is going to be replaced soon
>>
>>98904358
What's insane is them doubling the price of starter set and armies in this economy. Fuck them.

When and why did the Quar artstyle change? I remember it looking a lot grittier.

>Thread Question
I do a little bit of both. In recent years I've mostly stopped caring much about the distinction between either and just mix and match when it makes sense, inspired a bit by the whole 28 movement, Arcanum and hard to be a god. Some time ago I read a great essay arguing that the distinction between both categories is usually merely aesthetic, and the dividing line is more akin to a buffer zone comprising most works in either genre. The author suggests that exploring this dissolution of genres might lead to interesting scenarios, and me and my pals have been enjoying the ramifications of doing just this.
I convert whatever models strike my fancy and play scenarios that at times can seem nonsensical or silly, but nevertheless fun. We stick mostly to model agnostic games with lots of build freedom for obvious reasons, though we also homebrew a fair bit.

I prefer fantasy and my historical enjoyment ends at the renaissance with some minor dips into the early 19th century.
Mostly because you get more modern games and uniforms are boring to paint.
>>
>>98903832
It's just Mordheim, except catered to current GW audiences. The author's main claim to fame is having written Warcry, so the main appeal is "what if Mordheim but current day".
The rules seem sensible, but there's nothing in there to make me all giddy to try it.
It might be a hit with people who don't already play Mordheim or haven't played it before, though.

Sci fi. This is my entire fantasy collection that was stashed in a closet and they haven't been painted since 1995-7. Maybe I'll be changing that now so.

I enjoyed his series on game design, but I already didn't like Warcry nor AoS (which includes Spearhead) so I'm gonna skip on his Mordheim clone.

Josh Qualtieri has spoken about this. The older Quar material, down to the models themselves, depicted Quar with more "realistic" proportions and with a grittier style, but since he started collaborating/working for WGA, they've shifted to a more cartoony, storybook style of artwork and it reflects in the newer plastic sculpts, which have much more round and exaggerated proportions. It's a subtle thing, the appeal is still the absurdity of seeing cute little Jim Henson/Dr. Seuss characters in a whimsical setting kill each other in horrific WW1 style warfare (and being kind of serious about it) while using absurd-yet-kinda-plausible equipment, it's just that the presentation's focus has shifted from the absurdity itself (which was very obvious in older artwork, pic related) and being straight-faced, to focusing on the fact that these are, in fact, funny little Jim Henson characters. I think this has something to do with the fact they started noticing that the people who do take interest in Quar at conventions and whatnot are way more focused on the "funny little guys" aspect than the serious/gritty aspect.

tl;dr it's still "grimsical" but the artistic focus subtly shifted from the "grim" part of that word to the "whimsical" part because of market research (while not sacrificing or compromising the identity of the game whatsoever)

I think I prefer sci-fi over fantasy. That doesn't mean I avoid fantasy entirely. I love me undead.

>WarmaHordes cryx armada
I coward'd out of backing that because I saw some comments alleging that SteamForge Games screwed over some supporters. So I held my money even though those are STLs.
Me and my wallet would greatly appreciate the files if they are shared here by chance with 3dpg encryption.
Is Steamforgedgames a bad company? I think the Darkest Dungeon board game company was a bad company that got what it deserves.
But I think the Darkest Dungeon miniatures for that boardgame have been lost. Are they legally allowed to be distributed as STLs? Anybody got them if they leaked to share, please?

I know it's Not A Good Game, but OPR regiments is what people around me play so I'm invested in the system if I want to play rank-and-flank fantasy at all.
The latest rules drop is kind of fucking with me. My Goblins list is weird now, Trolls (formerly a strong melee unit) are now ranged by default with the option to get a decent melee attack for a points upcharge? Stylistically weird. Fanatics having Crossing Attack instead of Crossing Strike, rules as written, seems to make their signature attack pathetically weak and I wonder if it's even intentional - Crossing Attack / Crossing Strike being two different rules is asinine already, after all. That's not to say they didn't need a nerf of some kind, those were maybe the two best units available to Goblins, but these changes seem to undermine their character. It's not like you should be building WAAC lists in OPR anyway, the system's too light for anything beyond narrative / casual gaming. Assault is cool, reducing the amount of keywords overall is cool but hasn't gone far enough in my eyes.
>>98905236
Undead in sci fi are cool too. I'm very gay for the Stargrave Automatons kit, for example. Impractical cyber zombies are just plain cool.
>>
>>98905096
Weird quar question: Do coftyrans just not outfit their cavalry with anything except lances? Seems kinda weird from a worldbuilding standpoint if they're unable to function effectively as dismounted troops. Pretty sure every ww1 nation had cavalry who equipped themselves with carbines, MGs, and the like to function as dismounted troops while also sometimes requisitioning sabers and lances for more close-in work.
>>
>>98905543
OPR is well known for doing garbage like that. Especially if you beat someone on staff in a game, expect the army you player and/or like to be butchered as a reprisal. Somehow, they have become worse than GW.
>>
>>98905543

I noticed that you can get triple saves easily with the parry rule. It can get pretty nasty with plague disciples where you can have a brick of plague kings with 6+/3+/5+ saves in melee.
>>
>>98905543
the trolls seem to just have lost AP1 on their attacks, which is the same across all armies in the game. fanatics can now pick between blast(3) and deadly(3), on top of crossing attack now dealing wounds instead of hits so they're both more flexible and more reliable. what are you complaining about?

>>98905832
how can you even beat someone on staff in a game, when the staff notoriously doesn't play with the fanbase? you're just a hater
>>
>>98903736
>Are you more of a Sci-fi guy or Fantasy guy?
Sci-fi with a dash of Fantasy. Mutant Chronicles is my go to.
>>
>>98905988
Trolls default melee attack is A1 with no special rules at all (that is, one attack per troll) and I think it used to be multiple attacks per troll with AP. You can still get multiple attacks per troll if you pay a points upcharge for Hand Weapons or Great Weapons, which returns them to more or less their original melee statline, but they don't get equipped with it by default anymore. In effect this is just a points cost increase, which isn't a huge deal.
Fanatics' Crossing Attack, unless I'm reading it wrong, is simply weak. Their weapon stats are either AP and Blast or AP and Deadly depending on build choices, but none of those carry into Crossing Attack. They would, if Crossing Strike were part of the weapons profile, but Crossing Attack is merely a discrete unit rule. It lets you roll three dice when traversing over an enemy unit, wounding on 6+, so you seem to only be able to deal three wounds maximum and with poor odds of that. If I charge them in conventionally, only then would they get their AP and Blast rules, which doesn't seem to happen during traversal attacks unless I'm reading the rules wrong. So traversing with fanatics gives a maximum of three wounds, while a conventional charge could do up to nine via blast and have AP.
>>
>>98905988
>how can you even beat someone on staff in a game, when the staff notoriously doesn't play with the fanbase? you're just a hater
A troll? The OPR staff plays with Testers, Rangers and content creators. Guess which one I might have been.
>>
>>98906089
trolls have the same 3 profiles as before, just a bit different:
>hand weapon with A3 AP1 now has A3 Parry
>great weapon with A3 AP3 now has A3 AP2
>throw rocks was 12" A3 AP1 now has 12" A1 Blast(3) Indirect
whichever weapon the unit starts with doesn't matter. the only reason they now start with the rocks instead of the hand weapons is because they are cheaper

the fanatics can both do a crossing strike and charge in the same round, and they can even charge the same unit, so you get both your Blast/Deadly attacks, and your crossing strike. if you play regiments, it does kind of suck, because you can only get a crossing strike when charging a different unit, so yeah definitely weaker than before. the good thing is that on average they have a 15" charge, so if you plan your moves correctly you get to use it a few times in the game
>>
>>98906165
which OPR staff are you even talking about? there is only one game designer and he doesn't play with testers, rangers, or content creators. unless you can bring some sort of proof, you're just talking out of your ass
>>
>>98906165
>Guess which one I might have been.
Presumably a Ranger, because someone said they were a former OPR ranger in the previous thread and that was probably you. I do not know what a ranger IS, however. It is kind of a deputized touchpoint position between the creators and playerbase?
>>
>>98906219
He's a former content slopper. Can't you see the drama he's trying to stir?
>>
>>98905832
James, let it go. People started to realize that Warhammer doesn't equal wargaming and they do have alternatives - it's too late.

That's a big statement to make that requires big evidence backing it up.
Do tell, please?

I've seen people claim Trench Crusade is closing in on being bad like GW. The general and it might actually be worse than /40kg/. Is that general just life supported so /awg/ can tell TC anons to go there? What happened?
>>

Science fantasy. Yes I grew up with 40k. Guns and magic shit are both cool. Rules wise something like, "ranged combat is very common but unreliable" is my ideal, which is probably more post-apoc thematically.
>>
>>98907070
>That's a big statement to make that requires big evidence backing it up.
>Do tell, please?
Warhammer was originally made by passionate nerds and hobbyists who wanted a cool, narrative game in a science fantasy style universe. Modern Games Workshop and Warhammer are miserable garbage, but it grew with good roots. OPR was just an Anon who made One Page Warhammer to simplify the rules of 40k. He filed off the serial numbers, did he best to hype it up on here and now is selling garbage board game plastic miniatures for a game based on an existing setting, a soulless cash grab copying a modern soulless cash grab. Imagine making a "free" game based on Warhammer and selling lower quality miniatures at the same price as GW does.
>>
>>98906089

Toning down the amount of AP is good.
>>
Is there any future for hand sculpted miniatures or is this hobby fucked ?
>>
>>98907197
OPR is still providing free and cheap wargames rules for people that don't want to buy expensive 40k rules. now they're also providing cheap miniatures for people that don't want to buy expensive 40k miniatures

their thing has always been to provide a free and cheap alternative to 40k stuff. them going from making rules to making miniatures is the logical thing of what OPR would do, and it's weird anyone would be surprised by it or pissed off

the rules are still free, and nobody forces you to buy their miniatures. this is old man screams at cloud tier shitposting
>>
>>98907382
I'm sure you'll still get a few sales for your artisanal, hand-crafted, all-organic miniatures.
>>
>>98907382
There is. When they look good they will sell. It is just a problem of mass. 3D and AI minis are just quicker to do and will floot the market. From what i hear those 3D minis dont sell that well, because too many and often there is poracy of the files.
>>
>>98904358
EBay is literally littered with old scourge for cheap. You can very easily make a scourge army that's better than the bundle deal. This includes older starter scourge sets.

releasing without a campaign, and i know its just a play test, gives me zero faith in him as a designer understanding the game.
its mordheim but with kill team rules is something that generically appeals to me, but as an entire game system to learn, play, and convince others to play along with me i dont see it succeeding at all. I appreciate the dedication to customization but i'm really unsure who the target audience is. it feels aimed at secondaries, but secondaries dont play games.

Funny, I backed at the last minute because it was being done through MMF. The files may be owned and sold by SteamForge, but they're hosted on MMF, and I've not had any problems with them in the many years I've used 'em.
That, and I didn't back the last one, the 3 armies in one, and saw the price hikes they did. Was 300 for 3 armies during funding, now it's 300 per army.
And I can use undead pirates in pretty much anything.

Two FLGS out of like 6+ in my area started carrying Konflikt 47. They also do plenty of TCG, so TCG's probably the bulk of their income, or I assume it vastly eclipses a single /awg/ or /hwg/ on their shelves. History repeating itself, there's been a local bubble of 40k players momentarily waking up and realizing there's better games out there, so a couple stores branched out.

Is it really going to matter if I make a point of paying their MSRP + Markup to buy it off the FLGS shelves, rather than
>Cheaper when on sale from the Mfg directly

Are the OPR Devs just dogshit players?

Like they're trying to get rid of damage dealing and in the beta clearly wanted to punish you for having a strong opening by making it so you didn't get your special rules at that time. Seems like the whole point is "I keep leaving my guys exposed and they die, so I wantd stronger defense."

Now they have fewer attacks or worse AP things feel just wacky fucked up for some armies. Like Brothers are fine, but if you're Soulsnatcher Cults trying to blow up tanks with your Q5 support platforms then good luck, dipshit, cuz' it ain't happening. A bunch of armies feel mixed up and incomplete.

Also they way buffed casters, and now all the guys I play with added solo casters to their lists so David Cooperfield blows me up and then hides behind a porta-potty where I can't shoot back at him.
>>
>>98910822
Games at LGSs subsist on feedback loops. If the store sells K47, they'll keep ordering more K47, which will lead to it having shelf visibility and more people getting into it. If no one buys K47, the store won't get more to replace what they have, and it'll remain a dusty, disused corner of shelf space until the shop eventually discounts it to make space for 40k or TCGs. Like the Infinity stuff at my local shop
>>
Is the Quar starter set actually good for the starting the game or is it like 40k where the starter set just gets you rolling dice and the “real” game comes later?
>>
>>98910840
If you're struggling against a solo Caster then guess who the dogshit player is...
>>
>>98911141
It's actually good for starting the game, considering that it's a skirmish game and you have what are essentially two complete, viable lists facing off against each other. The army rosters for the Creevish and Western Arnyarans in the starter aren't complete in plastic yet, but they do have STLs and whatnot in the meantime alongside stats for the non-basic units.
>>
>>98911141
Right now it's fine, the recommended points level is 300 points per side and the starter set factions basically add up to that. Perfectly suitable for the standard skirmish game, but WGA has said they plan on releasing 28mm mass battle rules sometime in (probably late) 2027 that will include at least a full infantry company per side (quar infantry "companies" are like platoon sized though). Honestly that mass battle game will probably be fully playable using the 15mm quar models so I wouldn't worry too much about collecting everything unless you end up with a group that really wants to do everything in 28mm.
>>
>>98911498
It'd be you, moron. They can be less than 200 points in cost but can be dealing six or nine hits per cast, and then they can move after casting, which lets them avoid counterattacks.

Was this not playtested? What dipshit thought that was going to be fine?
>>
>>98911141
For the skirmish version of the game it's good.
But if you already have gaming supplies like tokens, markers and terrain I'd rather buy an infantry box of two factions instead, because that costs less and gets you more minis.
>>
>>98903736

>>
>>98910840
>Are the OPR Devs just dogshit players?
Exactly. They ape Warhammer games without realizing how mechanics are meant to work and their own rules are born of ignorance and a desire to sell physical kits and their STL files. They "balance" and play the game like it is League of Legends, intentionally breaking things or nerfing them if people complain enough and to sell NEW THING they produce. A joke of a company and not even worth calling a game studio.
>>
>>98912321
why are you so mad
just ignore it and make your own game instead of complaining on 4chan then
>>
>>98912417
Maybe you should hire people to balance your game and stop with the STL slop and subscription service instead. :^)
>>
>>98912417
Personally I'm mad because in 3.5, everything was kinda good. It wasn't a competitive game, but it was fine. Just take whatever units and they're all AP1 or doing something so that you're not usually in a bad spot.

But now all your ranged units do ten attacks with nothing on them, so infantry kind of bounces off of tanks. You think, well, you buy specialists for this, but unlike 40k you don't get re-rolls or bonuses to hit on specialized weapons, so you're fucking around trying to make it work with 4+ or 5+ rolls. Brothers are hitting on 3+ so they feel fine, but if you're Q4 or lower then your specialists are aiming on prayer, basically.

I'm mad because the game made my list building choices matter a ton more and then it refused to take the whole concept of list building. I mean what the fuck. One faction gets Q3 tank busters with Relentless, and then another can't hardly take the paint off.

Also all the attacks being stronger at long range is fucked up. Like, why do Orcs get stronger by charging from further away? Is this not a melee army. All their guns are shorter range and they're constantly in the enemy's face. It's so contradictory, and also cancels out the benefit of undermining retarded defenses like Changebound. FUCK Changebound, by the way. The game shouldn't be dry-humping defenses or trying to help players win by using them. That stuff is all lazy and annoying.

Since GW seem so focused on fucking shit up I'm going to be a tard and ask: who makes the best rules for campaign based skirmish games with guys that level up and can be customized Ala necromunda? Surely there's at least a few companies that haven't fallen to dogshit streamlining nonsense.
>>
>>98912660
I recommend Frostgrave or its svi fi equivalent Frostgrave, though only your main character levels up
>>
>>98912660
This Is Not A Test is a post apocalyptic warband game very much in the vein of necromunda. I've heard people using it for other settings fairly easily. There was a 2nd edition a bit back.
Zone Raiders has a neat campaign and warband setup but its a lot more niche BLAME! style post cyberpunk tribes in a megasrtucture. Neat game.
There's the 5 Parsecs or Miles series that are strongly campaign based, I don't like them as much mechanically, they're not quite lite and not quite medium,. but the campaign play sections are the strong suit.
Haven't had a run through Rangers of Shadowdeep but I'm under the impression its similarly focused.
I tend to like narrative campaign builds and things like 5 Core Skirmish but its not very warband list build oriented and much of the customization is fluffy or abilities and there are procedures for campaign play but its very loose.
The Frost and Star Grave games are okay, you don't really level up the warband so some people find that lacking. Good kits regardless.

I stopped paying attention to OPR as soon as they started doing the same churn and burn rules updates GW does, but for no fucking reason. At least GW does it to jew their customer base, OPR just does it for the hell of it. It's nonsensical.
>>
>>98913334
OPR does it to jew their customer base as well. Look at the STL release to rule tweaks ratio.
>>
>>98913363
then why the hell is anyone playing OPR if it's just a smaller company doing the same awful shit GW does?
>>
>>98913406
Sunk cost and brand loyalty, just like GW. A few years ago, OPR was pretty much a better alternative to 40k that garnered a lot of goodwill. That goodwill is now being cashed in to fuck over the customers and is also being spent on marketing. It's why games like OPR and Trench Crusade are pushed around as "the alternatives" while games that are more earnest games (like Space Gits) remain obscure even in comparison.
>>
>>98913406
Significant amounts of paid and volunteer gaslighting and astroturfing combined with the fact that it use to be decent. OPR use to just be another miniature agnostic game that was quick and fun, but the people in charge slowly turned it into Warhammer with the serials filed off. By tweaking army lists from generic and 40kWHFB/Warmachine/Historical stuff to be more in line with their own non-agnostic STL line and seriously began aggressively pushing a "Real gamers play OPR instead of being a GW slave" narrative which led to a really strange Reddit/Discord cult-like subculture. Now they are openly pushing that people use their STL and retail boxed kits for OPR and the community is going from hobbyists who find cool 3D prints or have a pre-existing collection to GW-like brand slaves.
>>
OPR facebook groups are full of two types of people right now.
1. People mad that the new rules updates has broken units with some models no longer having access to wargear they previously had, upsetting the proonting WYSIWYGfags
2. "Bruh just use different model" OPR shills.
>>

>>
>>98913406

>>
>>98913223
If we're being serious, there are much better war game rules. The whole appeal of OPR is that's it's casual as fuck, but I think that means it attracted a lot of really active retards to it. If you have to pay for the advanced OPR rules for it to be better, it's not GOOD. Like they aren't making the game balanced, they just balance it around dipshits, feels like.

I know competitive players get a bad reputation for being toxic, but if you ask them what in your system is busted then they probably can give you the answers.
>>
>>98913535
Yes there probably are.
I very much like space/sword weirdos and i hate tourneyfags with all my heart.
The real thing is: most people play warhammer (latest edition) and/or opr, and unless you have your own group, you're kinda fucked.
Between both, i prefer OPR by a mile.
(If the world was a good place everyone would still be playing 40k 4th edition.)
>>
>>98913565
The OPR folks, considering they're already at least partway out of the GW walled garden, will be more open to trying an alternative ruleset if you just offer to demo it. Sift the good ones from the shitters.

In addition to what the other Anon said, the This is Not a Test guy made a Shadowrun-style cyberpunk game called "Reality's Edge". Uses the same engine, different hiring. Initially only your leader and his backer/cyberghost level up. Your crew are all mercenary runners-for-hire you can build freely. For each mission you get a salary cap, and you select any people you want up to the cap. Roster's unlimited but they don't level. Once you find some runners that you like, you can spend campaign EXP to make them "Permanent hires" who level up in exchange for costing a bit more. Very neatly solves the old Death Spiral problem. It has a pretty cool cyberspace/meatspace divide on the playing field and a bunch of interactions with civilian NPCs. The book is arranged really badly, though. One of the few times I recommend digital - it's easier to search keywords than flip back and forth between the weapons, cyberware, and character skills sections. It makes a lot more sense if you already know TNT rules.

Last Days: Zombie Apocalypse is a solid little zombie game that builds on stuff like Walking Dead and 7ombieTV. Each leader has an alignment (Selfless, Selfish, Neutral, and Professional) that affect the people they can hire, internal conflicts, and the way they share out loot and food. There's a hardcore survival mode and singleplayer/co-op in the "seasons" expansion. You also have a Refuge for housing your crew. It sets your max number of characters; some are more secure against attacks, others give you more space or generate food and water. It very strongly encourages keeping your people alive to GTFO at the end of a mission, you'll start to starve because no-one can gather food, or risk losing your stash and refuge to swarm attacks if you get too many people downed
>>
>>98913406
Most of the people who play OPR, in my estimation, want to use GW lore (and often gw models) without being tied to GW rules. So it's not just an alternate game system, like Oathmark or whatever, it's explicitly Knockoff Warhammer. This explains the annual rules update - when Warhammer proper releases new models, the shadow that is OPR has to change as well, to match.
The OPR devs, for their part, seem to resent this. They're always pushing their homemade lore and their own model line because they'd just love to have a discrete identity. But as long as 99% of their units are a perfect recreation of their Warhammer equivalents, as is currently the case, the system definitionally cannot assume it's own identity. This places them in an unwinnable spot where either they clearly break from Warhammer and lose much of their players, or continue on as 'alt rules for the Warhammer army you've already got' path, staying a small-fry alternative to GW forever.
>>
>>98913565
40k is just abusive.

What's crazy is, I feel like you can tell if someone plays a system other than 40k based on their skill in OPR. If a guy shows up with a bunch of titans they're either showing off the models, or they're used to sacking their opponents with bullshit lists and hope they can do it in OPR. Knights used to be busted so they're checking if they can run an unkillable list of "Changebound Titans" and be busted in OPR.

Meanwhile, if you have any outside experience with a balanced war game, you learn where you place your units matters way more than what you put in your list. If you can't cheat with your wallet you have to know game fundamentals, and it's just not something 40k really teaches people.

OPR is not balanced at all, but alternating activations naturally brings it closer to chess than it does to 40k.

OPR lore is gay. Every single faction is Commander Friendly is looking for allies in the Degobah System and nobody has any reason to fight. Goblins love everyone, the brain parasites just want to be your friends and only infect you by consent -THAT IS THEIR ACTUAL LORE.

Of course nobody wants to be that. They're trying so hard not to be "grimdark" that they create no reason at any for any faction to be fighting. Even the "Havoc Brothers" read as otherwise upstanding dudes with a silly religion.
>>
>>98913653

>>
>>98913653
>>98913635
They have a writer. An actual staff writer. And somehow his job consists of describing armies that look like 40k, but have no reason to be enemies.

Even their original stuff is dumb. Voidstalkers are a harmonious society that traveled between dimensions so they can close the dimensional gates and... well not invade anybody or do anything. Presumably if you use this lore, your army is a group of well-intentioned heroes who are trying to stop ogres from opening more gates to Voidstalker Country. Something ogres do for reasons. No explanation is given why Voidstalkers can't close the gates from their own dimension.

If they were a 40k faction they'd be absolutely metal bastards trying to turn the sun off through ritual murder or something.
>>
>>98913706
I mean OPR lore is gay in the classical "rainbows and the Brady Bunch" fashion, anon.

Greg Brady could be a military leader in OPR and he would fit right in. Colonel Rixxon is a badass-looking dude in OPR whose lore is, "He was hired a few years ago to look for allies."

They do have some cool looking models. Really. I like some of them.

My ass is just chapped because 3.6 feels like a downgrade from 3.5, but of course OPR defenders have to defend the system from all criticism and insist that this is what we all really wanted.

I personally don't care that much about their lore because, yeah, NONE of it is cool, nor is it compelling, but the game is model agnostic so my guys do their own thing and my guys kill people due to being pathological and irresponsible conquerors. We're talking about INTERGALACTIC war, for fuck's sake. If it were over minerals you think we'd mine uninhabited asteroids.

The new game version sucking a little and the dick riders trying to glaze it anyway just gets me in the mindset to question the whole thing. Like the fuck you mean this is "better"? What's better about it. There were a few things I like but goddamn it was not an amazing update.

>>98913907
I mean, a cursory look around Facebook groups, plebbit, and this very thread showed me very little dick riding if any. Maybe on their official discord? I wouldn't know because I refuse to join.
But most people seem to be - quite rightly - criticizing the removal of anti armor options. It doesn't feel like anybody is really happy with this update. The only consistent positivity is around their Skirmish rule changes... I haven't tried the new Skirmish rules yet myself.
>>
Any games that are basically a 3d anime brawler or is that an untapped niche?
>>
>>98914090
Their reddit is a mix of criticism, but also a "THANK YOU OPR DEVS" thread which they should be embarrassed about. They don't want Tano to feel bad about the complaints, even though he should because the complaints are deserved and he didn't listen to them during beta.

In the Discord itself it's like a religion. If it happened they tend to try to find an explanation for why it had to happen and it's good, actually, unless it hurt some retard's personal army in which case they complain directly to Tano for a buff.

It's not worth joining the Discord. You always get those four or five weirdos who really aren't that fun to talk to.

The skirmish changes are good, but I kinda dislike they made everything attack less and then buffed wounds by 3x and attacks b 2x. My rifle guy shoots two times, doesn't even hit both shots, and then can't get through the armor. That part's a little lame.
>>
>>98914106
Not sure if I understand the /v/ category you're talking about but there have been a few fighting games that can feel a bit like a brawler.
There was the Street Fighter game, Marvel Crisis Protocol, the Batman one, and maybe Rumbleslam but that's more wrestling. But If you mean more like a thing where you co-op walk around and fight things there might be some in the board game dungeon crawler combat sort of area.

>>
>>98914612
The thing being said is that OPR wants to be distinct from 40k and sell their own models, but the problem is that their lore is, "Colonel Smiles is looking for hugs! Will he find them?"

I don't care and nobody cares. Fuck Colonel Smiles, I hope he gets space dysentery. People bring their 40k models over and nobody is running them as your friendly neighborhood Bros just trying to install a new water heater for grandma. They're Khorne Berserkers. Nobody is ever, EVER going to think the "War Bro" with a mug of hot chocolate is more of a badass than Kharne. There's zero conversion, it's not cared for.
>>
>>98914635
Like actually this just tickles the fuck out me, so I want to elaborate.

What is 40k? It'd drawing inspiration from Dune, Star Wars, and fantasy adventure. It's ADVENTURE! IN SPACE! Over the years it's grown and developed into its own thing because who doesn't love the idea of space adventures and knights gallavanting around killing demons and monsters? It's the kind of stuff that has always hooked human imagination.

So what does OPR do? It wants to be DIFFERENT, so it rejects adventure. Instead of men of action, we have men of paperwork! Colonel Rixxon is here to take names, and then fill out forms using those names. Perhaps you'd like an alliance?

It's fucking deranged. Just really, positively mad. I've seen fans describe OPR lore as "fresh air" and a nice break from grim darkness, but it's the only game I've heard of trying to sell itself on the idea of, "In the fun peacetime of the 51st millennium, there is only friends."

Even Star Trek Next Generation dealt with adversity amid diplomacy, and Picard was a war hero with real kills on his record. Whoever is writing the OPR lore is ill.
>>
>>98914503
>Senran Kagura multiplayer

Okay makes sense now. MCP is probably your best bet. There was an anon making a weebgirl tactical shooting game a while ago but I don't think I've seen much of it in a while.
Maybe Moonstone, its a small warband skirmish game that's fantastical and whimsy looking but its western themed. There's at least one anon who posts about it here sometimes.
>>
>>98914744
>So what does OPR do? It wants to be DIFFERENT,
OPR is lazy, as is Tano. "Ok, GW has a God Emperor so we need a GOD KWEEN! That's brilliant! And uh, the non-Tomb Kings need a Queen because if we have a King it would just be Setra-lite. Also no-one can be angry or evil, just flavors of misunderstood and actually kind and noble and very lovely people!"
>>
>>98914823
OPR's Emperor isn't a queen. He's the same idea as Emperor but they call him Founder, and when he died they uploaded his brain to a clone body and, uh... that's it. He's fine, just a clone, and he's still leading several factions, basically. It's a dictatorship, sure, but not a conflict-ridden one. There's no confusion about what he wants because he's alive. It's just that he hasn't conquered all of humanity because humanity is too busy seeking peaceful coexistence with the Orcs to be conquered.
>>
>>98914917
Sorry, I was thinking of the Not-Sisters of Battle leader, mixed them up. The lore is so boring and soulless that it is hard to keep straight. The only decent bits were in some of the short stories that were put out.

>>
>>98914932
Are you telling me those dumb webcomics are the actual lore of OPR?
>>
You do realize that different games are made for different players, right?

For all your screeching about how shit OPR is on here, they still have a huge following. They have around 10k recurrent customers every month on Patreon, how many other non-GW wargames can claim that sort of customer base?

No matter how shit and uninteresting you think their lore is, whenever they make a Frontiers for their books they get around 500 customers that back purely for the lore tier, and around 300 more that get the miniatures as well.

Even with retards like you complaining about their PVC miniatures, and them not doing sprues, not being original, etc. they still got 2000 customers on their Gamefound campaign, and who knows how many more in retail, where they're slowly spreading all over the US and Europe.

Just accept that there are people out there that like things you don't like, and give it a rest. If you really hate OPR, all you do by going on and on about them in here is give them more publicity.

How about you put that same amount of energy into talking about games you actually like and play, so that people can find better alternatives to OPR. No-Game Fucktards like you are what killed /awg/.
>>
>>98916538
>so that people can find better alternatives to OPR

Exactly. You want people to stop playing something, you Shut The Fuck Up about the game you dislike and start endlessly babbling and raving about the games you DO want more people to play. Remember, the games you DON'T like that are more popular than your preferred games only got that way because people wouldn't stop raving about them, so you better catch up with them.

They just released an update and it was sort of bad. Nobody is trying to destroy OPR by talking about it, anon. If we were "no games" then we wouldn't care about the update or know anything about the system.

Maybe put your energy into saying why you think having worse anti-tank weapons makes a cooler game instead of trying to police what people do or don't like. We can argue with you about it and give your system some publicity.
>>
>>98915862
You can go through the army fluff for free and look at the heroes, who have little fluff blurbs.

The striking thing about the lore is that it often goes out of its way to not be 40k, which can sometimes mean using the same lore but subverted to remove all the conflict, or other times means writing a faction that has no enemies and no reason to fight. The Infected Colonies are one of the weirder ones, where their fluff explains that though they SEEM like something from Resident Evil, the virus is actually just totally chill and has no desire to spread once it became sentient. It's a peaceful colony of T-virus victims just trying to establish trade routes.
>>
>>98916571
What makes them full corpo now? They used to make free games with frequent updates, they still make free games with frequent updates. They have been charging $5 for their advanced rules for literally 10 years now, so that can't be the argument for going corpo. Everything else is optional, you don't have to pay for their minis, you don't have to use their lore, you don't have to care. They just added more optional stuff, without taking anything away, so what's your problem?

>>98916611
Maybe in your opinion? They showed off how people rated the open beta in the survey, and overall it was very positive:
>2% rated it 1 star
>8% rated it 2 star
>23% rated it 3 star
>52% rated it 4 star
>15% rated it 5 star

That's 90% rating it 3+ star, and 65% rating it 4+ star. In what world is that "sort of bad"? It's the same thing I was saying before, different strokes for different folks, the majority of people are happy with what they're doing, so they continue down that path. Nu-/awg/ is just like dealing with summer-kiddos all year round, fucking spastics.
>>
>defending opr

>>98916638

What is that cumulatively? A C average?

Anyone made a Quar army for OPR?
I saw how OPE got offical Mutant Chronicles minis and fan-made Trench Crusade army lists.

if you aren't getting into the hobby just now and want two players worth of Quar minis then just buy two infantry boxes and that's it, a fully playable version of the rules are free online(it lacks missions, vehicle and heavy weapon team rules)
the only thing that the 2nd starter box(creevish vs arnyaran) gets you extra are the
>full rulebook
>ref sheet and unit stats on cards
>WGA plastic terrain set
the rest are stuff you should have if you aren't new, dice, deck of cards, and tokens

you should only consider the old starter if it's massively discounted somewhere, the rulebook in it is not just not the full one, but outdated. that box is used to be sold at the same price as two infantry boxes, but gave you less minis than those

Go back to work, Tano.No mistakes this time!
>>
>>98917239
Well it's okay. He can make roughly 33% mistakes, so long as the plurality of what he does is "good" and a small minority of it is "very good".

In what world is 33% mistakes and an overall C average not good?

not my paint, sadly, just one I grabbed. might copy it or something like it when I get to that unit though, it is indeed pretty sick.
Aright, so gameplay breakdown / pitch. prioritizing what I think is novel and why I like it.

>Board, units, bases
It's played on a hex map. there's only two unit sizes, big and small. 1 big or 3 small dudes can be in a hex.
you always take a champion and their followers as a set, but they're separate units in the game.

> Round structure + Unit cards
It's alternating activation, and each unit gets two actions when it activates. pretty basic, actions can be a move, one of a few normal actions, or a special action off their card. but the round is broken into two distinct phases: a Plot Phase and a Clash Phase. little bit of that andy chambers philosophy. each unit gets a full activation in each phase, and has 2 sides to its card corresponding to the phases. Most units only have tactical actions on their Plot side and only have attacks on their Clash side. but some like assassins are flipped. a lot of units also have different move speed depending on the phase.

the actual unit cards / stats are pretty simple but it feels like more depth because they all have 2 modes. only 4 stats and usually 1-3 moves/abilities to worry about.

....
>The scenarios & VPs
so right off the bat there's only ever 5 rounds, every round is scored independently on a swing-back-and-forth ladder and gives VPs to the winner at end of round. The rounds are worth 1, 2, 3, 2, 1 VPs in that order, first to 5 takes it.
Every round has baseline ladder scoring around objectives and kills, and then different unit types get bonuses for chasing the kinds of scoring they're specialized for. so like assassins get more points for kills, banner characters get more points for holding objectives, etc. but everybody can do everything.
different scenarios dictate starting zones, objective locations, and if the objectives move/change each round.

probably the best thing the game does. the points structure creates a SUPER fucking tense scrum in the middle of every game. if one person is dominating they just win in R3 and shit doesn't drag out. if it's close you're biting and kicking for every point. at the same time there's limited value in alpha striking (bc R1 is only worth 1 VP). just great pacing.

>Setup, other shit
no points, you just play a game with 1, 2 or 3 champs per side. they each come with 1 to 6 followers and have a banner they can place on objectives. all different styles, but each one is basically a little battlegroup. some of them are designed to shieldwall with their leader, some are sacrificial, some are independent. all types.

also, it does the warcastery thing where nothing stays dead. you can recruit more followers during the game to replace the ones killed. and champions that get KO'd can stand back up later for a cost and keep going. since everything comes back around to VPs it's more about position and tempo anyway.

oh shit, yeah sorry, combat resolution.
separate attack and damage rolls against target's Dodge and Armor. it uses marked d6's that are 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 2. so basically 3+ hit, 6 crit if you're using regular dice.
All the rolls are just: roll a number of dice equal to your attack/damage. sum the number of hits, compare to target. little bit messy, but pretty fast to resolve on the table.

The follower units for the most part don't make multiple attacks, which also speeds things up. Instead they have a combined attack profile depending on how many of them are making the attack. everything is just set up to play fast.
so like, piccy, these guys are a 5 man unit. if they use the Surround Pound attack, it has to target an adjacent enemy (Range 1) and then the accuracy and damage scale up depending on how many dudes are combining (the 3 lines for 1, 2 or 3 dudes). and it also has an ability that stacks it even higher if you've got friends around the target.

I don't give that much of a fuck about the combat resolution ultimately. it's a fine system but it's not what makes the game special.

I feel so, so fucking bad for people who have invested so much into 40k proper. Imagine building and painting beautiful models for such a shit game system. I don't fault anyone who decides to go for something like OPR, even if OPR is shit, because it's still better than the horrible necrotic ooze that is 40k. Gotta get some use out of those models. Plus, once they get the taste of GW's necrotic dick out of their mouth with OPR, they can be opened up to other systems where they can still use their models, like Xenos Rampant. Or Space Weirdos. Or Space Gits (if they collect orks). Or even Stargrave. Technically anything, really, but still.
>>
>>98917951
Sadly, most just stick to OPR. They go from one abusive relationship to another that gaslights them into thinking things are better. Same problems yet the mentality is "This time is different, I only get what I deserve when I am wrong!".

Xenos Rampant is good.

>>98918315
Okay, suggest some alternatives that you like.
>>
>>98918465
Stargrave is fun conceptually, but shit in execution

>>98918541
Why is it so fucking hard to kill things. I'm looking for a power fantasy experience, sure, but a 10 man squad needing to roll 10 successes on 10D6 to put a measly 2 wounds on a unit is insane. The rules are clever, I like them, but everything is WAY to survivable.

>>98918545
Battletech Alpha Strike, Battletech, Baron's War, Brutal Quest, Clash of Spears, Combat 3000 if you're feeling zesty, Fallout Wasteland Warfare (My favourite game) Greathelm, Halo Flashpoint, Halo Fleet Battles, Hardwar, MESBG/LOTRSBG Mutant Chronicles, Necromunda, Squad Hammer, Starcraft, Space Station Zero, Reign in Hell: to name the games I play most.
>>
>>98918679
Hardwar is the reboot of Horizon Wars, an Osprey game. Just so you know.
>>
>>98918315
not my faves either, but they do slap the shit out of anything GW has made in the last 20 years
>>

Which of the games you listed can serve as a good alternative for 40k refugees to what was previously listed? Using 40k models, of course, they are refugees.

Renegade Scout or Squad Hammer depending on if you want closer to Rogue Trader retroclone or rulelite 40k platoon combat.
Same guy has at least half a dozen variations on
>off brand 40k from RT to a bit of 3rd

Xenoforce is a neat xcom like with a squad of totally not space marines fighting various xenos.

Alternative Armies has an entire range of totally not warhammer 40K in a setting called The Ion Age. I played Firefight back in the day, it was okay? An interesting artifact regardless. Haven't tried their newer stuff.
>>
>>98919119
I mean, it's very much 40k but The Long War is a thing. But that'd be like counting 9th age as awg and not whfb
>>
>>98919136
lol that backpedal tho

>>98919156
Its an interesting question. Even /40kg/ lists some alternatives in their OP but they're going through a thing right now where there's /grog/ and /indeterminatelocationtotallynotmiddlehammer/ and they had a whole thing about utensils for a bit everyone's a bit sore over still.
>>
Is there no "retroclone" of 4e warhammer but with some "modernization"?

Not that it matters a lot to me, I prefer skirmish games in general.
>>
>>98918679
i disagree. but, reading your list of likes, i see why you dislike stargrave. it is not a competitive or balanced game.
ironically i think >>98919220 just hits the modern sensibilities. people don't really want mass war games as much as they want skirmish. 40k is 40k and takes most play there. other war games are really only surviving in different spaces
>>
>>98919220
didnt the /grog/ crowd build exactly that last year?
you can always do the 4th ed core book with 3rd ed codex thing. it's remained the go-to all these years for a reason.
>>
>>98918746
>>98918776
there's not a lot of common connective tissue with the Osprey label games. a lot of it they just pick up and publish, not develop in house. horizon/hardwars has fuck all to do with the rampants, which likewise share nothing with gaslands, etc. you can criticize publishing quality or the kinds of designers they choose to publish, but an eval of one game isn't going to inform the next in most cases.

Some more Steel Rift today. I got a good victory but I really chocked the table with terrain. I think the game favors wide squat buildings, the tall narrow Titanicus terrain is less effective so I really have to dump a lot on the table or I end up with big bowling alleys.

Also I've noticed the games usually don't go evenly into the final round, either I get crushed or I crush my opponent often barely achieving the objective either way.

If these are the "good" rating OPR moves forward on, is it possible to make a patch bad enough they wouldn't go through with it?

This is probably Tano himself posting in the thread, citing 3 star reviews as if they were a good thing. How bad would a war game have to be to get majority 2 or 3 stars? I think even a hotel with bed bugs can get a three star review. One or two star reviews would be because Tano stole your money or something.
>>
>>98919652
Tano did start OPR on /tg/ so I would not be surprised if he still posted. The person or persons defending OPR with such zeal and vitriol against even the tamest complaint does seem rather like someone with personal stakes in the game doing well.
>>
>>98918465
>generic skirmish game is fun
No way dude, now what game replicates a 1500 point 40k game in scale
