Im sitting out here in the cold autumn night handing out candy and I keep thinking of Thalia and how I wish she was here with me. I have a cute Chinese girlfriend now so I feel even more guilty for still thinking about Thalia but I do. I know she'd be disgusted by me if we met for real. I know I'll never be good enough for her. I guess that's okay. In some ways I have moved on. But I will always compare any woman I'm with to how I felt about Thalia. And those feelings will always come up wanting.

In that case you can always use edhrec but not for the median list
The only thing the site is really good for is searching individual lists
Find 3 cards you know you want in your list, let's say you know you are going to be high on artifact removal so you want a deck with liquimetal torque, you are in elves so you put priest of titania and you know you aren't going to leave home without heroic intervention in green
Well out of the 2000 decks there's only 5 that meet that criteria
You have cradlehoof
https://edhrec.com/deckpreview/R6x_mwL2yAY8xDnDeDl1Mw
You have elfballhoof
https://edhrec.com/deckpreview/267OnYk02CJ6fyA8l5H6ng
You have a green good stuff list with some interesting tech cards and only 31 lands
https://edhrec.com/deckpreview/ru_757h1YwuhiKjFmqm4Ww
Another, imo more reasonable, elfball deck
https://edhrec.com/deckpreview/ru_757h1YwuhiKjFmqm4Ww
And then an untappy, almost certainly Ashaya focused deck
https://edhrec.com/deckpreview/Ku7Cg3Gv2DUlKfjA11Ur7w

Pick one you like and start there
And you don't need to pick my 3 cards either maybe you think torque is too cute and elves are lame

I see a legendary nephilim now exists, but I hate it.
Does everyone here still agree with the old consensus that the original five nephilim are acceptable as commanders even without the legendary supertype?
Honestly with the pway phyrexian got errata'd onto like, 250ish creatures I'm surprised the nephilim haven't been errata'd to be legendary, the designers even stated they deeply regret not making them legendary.
>>
>>98906271
>Can use all of them in one deck
>This is somehow bad

>>
>>
>>98906296
Their value was in being gorgeous art but mechanical and color oddities while also being a full cycle.
the new legendary 5 color was wizards saying "hey you guys seem to like these in commander so we'll just give you a cheap excuse to throw them all together"
They've been commanders and their fun is making four colour combos accessible, even if they arent alone for that anymore I was just wondering if at the least anons in this general think they're still acceptable in that slot.
I didn't want or ask wotc to make them a slivers backup dancer and I won't dance to that tune.

I mean if you showed up with a deck for one and asked I'd personally be fine with it. I/we aren't the people you need to be asking though.
>>
>>98906317
I assumed the reasoning behind the new one was that it made it really easy to run any other Nephilim as a secret commander.
You could run all five, but because it only searches for one and the mana cost is flexible, you can really easily build it as a 4-color deck by just exercising some restraint.

That said, the far simper thing for them to do would be to print a colorless card like Faceless One that says "Choose a Nephilim" and doesn't have a color-selecting ability. Backgrounds would likewise be illegal as commanders without an ability that explicitly allowed you to choose one, and nothing would stop WotC from allowing a similar mechanic for whatever card subtype they wanted.
The only other weird thing that might do is make it so you could pick out any Changeling as a commander as well.
>>
>>98906296
You forget that the reason 99% of people want to play Nephilim is to be a performative retard saying they're not playing a color while also jerking off Ravnica.
>>
>>98906394
the simple thing was already stated: errata legendary on them like they errata'd phyrexian on elesh norn and so many others.

Then when they next get reprinted, don't reprint just the one, reprint the cycle and have it actually say legendary on the card

right about the time the first commander product was released proxying was a rarity and usually consisted of paper printouts tucked into a sleeve at best, names and costs written on paper and tucked in front of a card was pretty normal.
But as the prominence of commander design foremost in MtG, and later UB continued to rise and has now basically become the sole twin faces of the product, proxying has exploded in lockstep, as wizards gets worse, proxies get better and more common.
I'm pretty sure there will come a day, maybe even in the next decade, where wholesale proxying becomes not just common, but the norm for at least half the playerbase.
Wizards has shown us that subject matter is no longer important from renamed alt printings like the godzilla and miku and MLP cards, to purely external stuff all on its own with the UB sets.
Wizards has also shown that the aesthetic doesnt matter, every set now seems to get its own kind of special frame, secret lairs get special frames, full arts get varying special treatments.
What all this means is that subjective aesthetic is now valid, and it wont take much for most players to realize there is no good reason for wotc to be the arbiter of what aesthetics they get to choose from, an individualized bespoke product printed on demand is just logical at this point.

I can see wanting to match say, the original card frame style without a line on the bottom saying "this is a proxy not for resale"
Yeah if some dumbass mistakes my baral in an old frame for being a real card that's them having an education issue, I don;t want to ruin the aesthetic I'm going for with jarring disclaimers.
I also wont put Wizards of the Coast (C) on the bottom either, just the artist credit.
and I also don;t know anyone who is offering a 1:1 MtG card back in the official style, i like how mpc autofill has a few hundred choices, some of the ones I like best are the real magic style that instead says Proxy the Gathering or the real MtG style that just has no writing on it at all, only the frame, the oval, blue box and the five color pips, like so.
There are many ways to make a card look nice but also not look like an attempt to pass off frauds on the secondary market, without using ugly disclaimer text announcements.

>it's edh and UB's fault there are so many fakes running around!
oh please, stop being so dramatic
as technology progresses printing services just became more accessible to the public so making high quality fakes became economically feasible, that's all there is to it
>>
>>98906751
Fakes are cards being passed off as official wotc product, intended to scam the secondary market.
Proxies are customs, not fakes. Like with what gobanon is doing and 3 anons in the last week or so have made physical print orders for, bespoke items intended for personal use, if anyone ever bought one of those it'd be pretty damn clear they were buying something unofficial and would be paying for the subjectively desirable aesthetic.

intent is irrelevant, trespassing magically doesn't become legal just because you pinky swear that you weren't going to be a peeping tom and steal anything; it really just becomes a matter of how much of a bother it would be for wotc to exercise their legal rights to defend their copyright and bring down usea and shit
if you take offense over me telling the truth that proxies are fakes then you need to step back a bit from your favorite children's card game and get some perspective

personal use parody is fair use you retarded armchair wannabe-lawyer retard.
wotc also is on record saying they have no issue with proxies that are being used personally and not for secondary market fraud or tournament/event play, so you give more of a shit than the company does.
but just keep on whining and bitching that titow goblin pinups are somehow an attempt to trick people into paying $1000 for a mox diamond, because the guy spending that money is totally going to believe the goblin titcow is the real deal official wizards card, absolutely.
>>
>>98906794
Do you know how strong humans are when their "mental barriers" don't exist?
This is why retard strength is a thing.
This is why when a person is struck by lightening they are flung great distances. Its not because the force of the lightening throws them, its because their muscles are forced to their limits and they literally jump that distance.
When you are a mindless zombie, you have no mind to limit you potential.
>>
>>98906456
My opinion is that wizards is fucking terrible at creating an aesthetically coherent and satisfying game world that people can fall in love with. They suck at art, they suck at writing, and they outright refuse to give the fandom what they want while shamelessly pushing mechanics and creature typed and art that the design team favor. Magic has succeeded in spite of itself, not because of good design (outside of the rules). There's a reason why Magic has produced zero popular characters or stories that have penetrated into wider nerd consciousness or pop culture success while entire nerd franchises have emerged and boomed since 1993.

I'm an angelsfag, so I and the tens of thousands of angels fans are well aware of how shit Wizards is at giving us what we want.

and they do in fact make a definition of what a *real proxy* is, which are scribbles and strips of paper, notice that these do not include their copyrights, moron

Theft is fun, but theft where you can actually make other people's creatures powerful with your own cards is even better. There was already an obscene amount of support for artifact creatures before Star Trek and the set itself is stuffed to the brim with even more.

Lol, you were complaining just the other day how gobanon doesn't use the official symbols.
You also didn't highlight the sentence after that where it say that playtest cards are also defined as something that wouldn't pass as the real thing under even a cursory examination.
Or the next part after that that wotc put in BOLD font saying they have no desire to police things people use for personal non-commercial contexts even if that is in a gaming store.
Nice cherrypicking though!

the danger of that becomes 'ok how close to the original can we get before we can sued for making fakes' and corpos have contingenies on that
>Or the next part after that that wotc put in BOLD font saying they have no desire to police things people use for personal non-commercial contexts even if that is in a gaming store.
again, it's their decision to *not* exercise their legal rights, you're the only one here that can't accept that they have them in the first place
funny thing is gobanon would be perfectly fine in being told that his proxies are fakes, because that's just what they are, really.
i can buy fake nike air jordans from sellers that openly tell me they're fake, that doesn't mean they're *proxies* of air jordans, they're still fakes

If WotC did care to try exercising lawfare in this matter, other companies in the /tg/ space have done the same thing with a lot of money and set precedent by their failure in the attempt.
Notably Games Workshop and Chapter House, and the 3D printing community now has legal protection to make and sell a lot of things GW would really like to prohibit, but they've had their legal teeth pulled over the attempt.
WotC made this statement well after the Chapter House precedent, they know better than to try going after proxies legally, it would erode their fanbase support with ill-will.
But go on, continue talking for a big corporation that's already stated they disagree with you, keep playing lawyer when you have no degree, much less have passed the bar.

Adding to this, the only time you're able to (willingly) tap into this power is during times of great duress, which is where all the regular people lifting cars off of people incidents came from. The Japanese even have a term for this phenomenon, "great strength during a roaring fire". The reason why we're so limited in accessing this strength, however, is because it's so much greater than what our bodies are built to handle that our muscle fibres begin to snap under the pressure and our bones crack under the output of our muscles pulling across them. However, Eternals don't have to deal with that shit, so they can use it willy-nilly!

yeah pretty much if it has 1 GC might as well do 3.

Cyc Rift might not be flavorfully "synergistic" with any deck but it's a closer. it ends up opening up the board for you to win or stall out opponents long enough for you to win.

one ring is great draw after a couple turns of course but depending on the colors there may be better options. for blue, Rhystic Study is an IQ test.

If your commander is important is useful to have either FOW or Fierce Guardianship, so it's worth having in there. of course on any given game, or maybe you play like up to midnight on a given night, you may never draw a single one of your GC's since theres so few in a deck.

from what I've seen, except for some older players who typically started in the 90s or 2000s most decks will not get stomped at an average LGS. there is a good amount of people playing pre-cons and modified pre-cons that they've changed some cards out and an average b3 deck can easily compare with a contemporary pre-con. and thats not underselling pre-cons, some of the recent ones are really good. and some are even "bracket 3" as the Tidus FFX one and one of the Dr Who decks both include Farewell. and one of the Ikoria ones comes with Fierce Guardianship.

>>98907395

My more mid-power B3 deck is running 2, though I'd be happy to add another piece of fast mana to the mix (the commander is 8 mana) but I'm just too cheap to bother.

i have an idea for a deck, but i have some questions to help build it. looking for some good cards that might be a little offbeat.

1) what are the best/your favourite cards that are 5cmc+ and can discard themselves for an effect? cyclers are obvious choices, but i'm thinking things like magma opus and harvester of misery.
2) what are the best/your favourite cards at 4cmc? currently sitting at some of the best overall like the one ring, smothering tithe, defense of the heart, and sheoldred.
3) what are some of the best/your favourite cards at 5cmc+ that have cheaper alternate costs or ways of reducing their own cost?

not quite what i am looking for. songbird is a discard outlet, i am looking for cards that discard themselves. i guess i should state the actual reasoning. i want to make a first sliver deck with no other slivers, and always be able to consistently cascade into a small number of very good 4 drops (maybe throw living end in there as well, if i have a bunch of cyclers and evoke creatures). i want cards that are higher cmc that can cycle/discard themselves so that i still have things to do in the early turns but will be skipped over during the actual cascade. i've already done quite a bit of looking at split cards, adventures, cards with cycling, cards with evoke, cards with impending, and more. but i am looking for cards that might not have as easily searchable terms.
i'm also looking for what would be considered "good 4 drops" as well. considering industrial advancement and seige rhino.

1 - HEXHAVEN BATTALION MY SEALED G.O.A.T. I think Lorien Revealed is also popular. Kogla and Yidaro discards itself into your library for a Destroy Artifact/Enchantment effect which is pretty solid.

2 - Battle Angels of Tyr and Trouble in Pairs always put in work for me. Mindslicer also for a creature that disincentivizes people from board wiping you.

3 - K'rrik turns all your cards with black pips into Phyrexian black pips so you can cheat out so much shit.

I don't think you fully comprehend how bad spending 6 mana on a 6/6 no text is against opponents that are running cards that do things.

>>98909197
I used to be opposed to this but I eventually realized why WotC keeps making precon commanders setup+payoff and card advantage all in one. It's because:
>The average player (not just new player, average player) is retarded and doesn't know how important card advantage is
>Even retards will typically cast their commander if only on accident because they ran out of other cards to cast
The average player never consciously thinks about how hitting your land drop every turn means you need to average drawing 3 cards a turn. They just see a bomb in their first mulligan and pray for lands and no enemy counterspells. Commanders that give draw power fix this and patch over non-games. These precon commanders are probably the reason 80% of EDH games don't end with multiple players saying they didn't get to do anything (because they got mana screwed.)

Easy, ral monsoon mage. He's a reducer and a payoff in the command zone for 2 mana, and he gives you red and blue (all you really need). All you have to do is cast 5 instants or sorceries in a turn while he's in play and there's a 50% chance you get up to 8 instants and sorceries for free, and that should absolutely convert into a win. With 6 spells there's a 75% chance he flips, and so on.
You could also play Kykar, as he gives you access to white as well and is a mana generating engine.
>>98909282
Dragon mantle is shit and wild guess is much worse than faithless looting when faithless looting is good, which is when your graveyard is an extension of your hand or when you just want as much filtering as possible.
>>
>>98909260
Unfortunately I've come to realize the retards are load-bearing. It doesn't matter how much strategic depth the game has or allegedly has. If the onboarding experience is horrible, people will just not play it (see: Artifact). 1v1 formats just don't fire in paper play anymore specifically because they demand a large amount of upfront skills that the average player doesn't have and will likely never develop. Even something seemingly simple like acknowledging that you can get a higher overall winrate by accepting losing matchups instead of trying to patch over them is something many EDH players don't understand because cards like Generous Gift create the impression of being able to handle any situation when that's not the case. The average person will not intuitively understand the scale of draw power they need from their first game, even when coming from other card games since none of them use a resource system that commands a need for such deep draw just to not start a cascading deficit. There's a limit to how much "git gud" will convince someone to keep playing when their experience is 3 turns of no land for turn so no plays.
Quite frankly EDH is also fucking miserable when fully optimized because your choice of commander and deck identity rapidly lose focus in favor of generically overtuned cards.
>>
>>98909304
>commander
>strategic depth
>>
>>98909305
Even more reason retards are load-bearing to the format.
>>
>>98909301
That's only the case when you're paired with green or black, and then you have better draw anyway.
Wheels tend to be expensive, faithless looting, goblin rummager and other non-advantage draws are situational. Mantle is (R):draw a card, no one cares about the firebreathing aura.
>>
>>98909309
R draw a card is not card advantage, it is a shitty conditional cantrip that you can't play on turn 1 most of the time and doesn't help you filter at all. Damn near unplayable.
Mono red your card advantage is your commander, letting you play your shitty looting and rummage effects. Red with other colors your looting effects become much better.
>>

impulse draw is not real draw, but it is certainly better than conditional card neutral draw. you do sort of have to tune your deck to facilitate impulse draw if you're going to properly take advantage of it, which isn't too hard in mono red really. and they've printed quite a few of these effects by now.
>>
>>98909365
That's one part of a draw package, whats the rest? dragons mantle and wild guess will be on the list for anyone who actually plays instead of theorybuilding as a secondary, who also isnt spending serious money.
>>
>>98909370

>whats the rest?
Probably the other identical copies of reckless impulse they've printed.
But as you're now using buzzwords i can safely assume you don't have any decks and don't actually play, and if you do play and think "R draw a card (if there's a creature in play and if it's not your creature you buff an opponent's creature for free)" is a playable a card then you don't play above bracket 2 at best.

NTA, but you named two cards that I ended up cutting after playing with a budget monoR list for a while, simply because there were better options.
I swapped Dragon Mantle for Artifist Acumen, since you can play the latter on an empty board if you really need to, and there's a lot more instant/sorcery synergy there. As for Wild Guess, it's really easy to find better alternatives. Thrill of Possibility, Sazacap's Brew, and Witch's Mark are fairly mild boosts, but you can also run Stormshriek Feral which comes with what is basically a Tormenting Voice attached.

The only reason I don't run more impulse draw is because there's enough graveyard and flashback effects in the deck that discarding tends to be a payoff. And I'm also obviously running Faithless Looting in there.
I can see situations where Dragon Mantle might be useful. A WR enchantment voltron list for example. But Wild Guess of all things?
