Basically, Marlena has always been a Sword & Planet protagonist, just no one ever wrote the story beats that come before "marry local royalty".You need something exciting to happen with purely local elements before the Horde invasion. Maybe you want Keldor to be fighting Randor for the throne by the time Marlena arrives. Maybe Miro is still around and they have to fight the Enchantress. A side quest could imperil them in the Vine Jungle with Gygor and young Beast Man.
Maybe get really cheeky about Barsoom inspiration and have Modulok around acting like the head-shaped Kaldane aliens who swapped red bodies around.

I found a She-Ra colouring book online, and I couldn't help do this picture because of the expression on Trap Jaw's face. He looks so bewildered by the grapes. Also even though the book is clearly based on the cartoon, this Trap Jaw is using the toy for reference, hence my choice of colours.
