i'm a complete beginner to woodwork and more advanced model railway stuff. How do people do model railway bases? I hope to one day set up a large model railway in my attic but dont know what the standard methods are of building benches/shelves for the tracks. my plans for the layout dont involve much scenery, rather just long stretches of track with maybe a foot either side for scenery.
>>11568723>$10,000 worth of lumber in that pictureModel railroading is one of those "alpha toy hobbies" because it's relentlessly expensive to where only a small community can afford it. >How do people do model railway bases? That pic is the start. From there lay plywood over it to create your flat surface. Add terrain and "hills" as needed/wanted. And for the record NO ONE ever intends to have as much scenery. Just a little to add character. And then they add a little bit more here and there, and you gotta have a tunnel, and then a little more scenery details and hey shit that old gas station model looks cool so let's add that. And then just like that you spent way too much.
>>11568728>And for the record NO ONE ever intends to have as much sceneryI genuinly dont. all i want is a stretch of mainline with a class 66 and some hopper wagons. maybe a class 800 too in the future.
>>11568735You'll see. OCD takes over 100% of all model-railroaders.
>>11568728>$10,000 worth of lumber in that picturewhat? where do you live? Did your country ban wood or something?
>>11568819The forced population growth bid up the cost of building materials, especially lumber. You should price solid real wood furniture in America now. Wood prices are insane now because of that surge in demand.
>>11568852Americans havent discovered cement, mortar or bricks? What a backward species.
>>11568728Ten thousand in lumber? Are you high? Thats three hundred dollars tops.
Honestly, start small and work from there. You can create a decent layout with a lot of action on a base the size of a large dining room table at first. You can expand if and when you need to. What scale do you plan on operating?
>>11569151oo gauge. like i said earlier, the idea is literallly just a stretch of standard british mainline inspired by a local area to me, maybe with one estuary bridge. no villages, farms, roads etc.
>>11569141It was sarcasm to denote the high price of lumber now.
>>11568728>>$10,000 worth of lumber in that picturelooks like cheap softwood to me cuzprolly 50ยข a foot
I just found this thread and I wanted to see if you lot had any input on this: >>>/adv/33693208Thank you for your time.
>>11569312>sarcasm
Is there even a point in buying Lionel anymore? Menards is starting to offer affordable starter sets and traditional O gauge cars, Atlas, RMT and MTH have way better scale options. At this point you're basically paying for the name.
