i'm a complete beginner to woodwork and more advanced model railway stuff. How do people do model railway bases? I hope to one day set up a large model railway in my attic but dont know what the standard methods are of building benches/shelves for the tracks. my plans for the layout dont involve much scenery, rather just long stretches of track with maybe a foot either side for scenery.

>$10,000 worth of lumber in that picture
Model railroading is one of those "alpha toy hobbies" because it's relentlessly expensive to where only a small community can afford it.

>How do people do model railway bases?
That pic is the start. From there lay plywood over it to create your flat surface. Add terrain and "hills" as needed/wanted. And for the record NO ONE ever intends to have as much scenery. Just a little to add character. And then they add a little bit more here and there, and you gotta have a tunnel, and then a little more scenery details and hey shit that old gas station model looks cool so let's add that. And then just like that you spent way too much.
>>

>And for the record NO ONE ever intends to have as much scenery
I genuinly dont. all i want is a stretch of mainline with a class 66 and some hopper wagons. maybe a class 800 too in the future.
>>
>>11568735
You'll see. OCD takes over 100% of all model-railroaders.
>>
>>11568728
>$10,000 worth of lumber in that picture
what? where do you live? Did your country ban wood or something?
>>
>>11568819
The forced population growth bid up the cost of building materials, especially lumber. You should price solid real wood furniture in America now. Wood prices are insane now because of that surge in demand.
>>
>>11568852
Americans havent discovered cement, mortar or bricks? What a backward species.
>>
>>11568728
Ten thousand in lumber? Are you high? Thats three hundred dollars tops.
>>
Honestly, start small and work from there. You can create a decent layout with a lot of action on a base the size of a large dining room table at first. You can expand if and when you need to. What scale do you plan on operating?
>>
>>11569151
oo gauge. like i said earlier, the idea is literallly just a stretch of standard british mainline inspired by a local area to me, maybe with one estuary bridge. no villages, farms, roads etc.
>>
>>11569141
It was sarcasm to denote the high price of lumber now.

Is there even a point in buying Lionel anymore? Menards is starting to offer affordable starter sets and traditional O gauge cars, Atlas, RMT and MTH have way better scale options. At this point you're basically paying for the name.
>>
>>11568852
2x4 framing studs are like $4 apiece.
which is twice as much as they should cost, but not actually expensive.
the fact that you are lumping dimensional lumber made of douglas fir and white pine with hardwood furniture when you are complaining about the cost of lumber strongly indicates that you have no idea what the fuck you are talking about
actual construction grade lumber has mostly recovered from the covid price shocks.

yep

>>11571023
sadly some of this shit has been impacted by a certain idiot's tariffs - and by next year, given that Canada hasn't gotten any real relief in the various 'deals' made, lumber will definitely be high. The fact that housing and other construction is also down for other reasons, impacts this less, but it will still increase no matter that use and demand is somewhat depressed.

With the amount of old RR modelers dropping dead, why on earth would you make a new RR base? If you of a dead RR modeler, then talk to the family and see if you could buy the base. Hell, most of the time the family are willing to give it to for free as long as you can get it out of grandpa's basement.
>>
>>11571137
well yeah because people do often have a list of local pensioner aged model railroaders who are at deaths door for them to then swoop in to salvage all modelling materials. fucking retard
>>
>>11571888
Well yeah, because if you're not a total neet, then you might be part of or knoe someone in the local model RR group. If one of the old guard dies, then you, as an individual or group can ask the family for the RR base as that's worthless if nobody in the family is into RR. Fucking europoor.

Hey I actually got a question. I have this Lionel 0-6-0 I've had since I was a kid. I recently started running it again and recently it started making this buzzing or grinding noise. Is it a simple matter of the armature needing lubrication or is there something more severe at play here?
>>
>>11572138
Is it otherwise fine? Then new lubrication, if not, then it might be something more. Did you run this 0-6-0 on carpet, by any chance?

This is my garage layout for large scale.
16x7 ft The lumber cost me around $300
The track was more expensive
>>
>>11572148
No, It happened very recently when I ran it. It does need new traction tires though.

We have an entire Advice Board for Model Trains?
Even if you hate reddit, you'll likely get better advice there -
but (a) if space is an issue and you do not OWN your place, that's something you need to give serious consideration to; (b) generally, if this is something you plan to take seriously, spotty stock is also something to give serious consideration to; and (c) finally, get what makes you happiest in looks and feels, within your budget.
>>
>Menards doing a dinosaur train set.
You know I'm glad someonne is doing a kid oriented set that isn't licensed trash again.
>>
The hobby is dying. And I blame two things. One, the near total abandonment of kid oriented toy trains in favor of scale modellers, two, The US dollar just doesn't go as far as it used to anymore.
>>
>>11574125
the digital age is to blame. vast majority of people under 30 these days spend their time doomscrolling and spending their money on labubus and other trendy shit. the masses dont care about model trains.
>>
>>11575356
Heres the thing. I don't think thats true. I think most people who would be interested nowadays just flat out don't have the room. So they go for computer simulations.
>>
>>11572533
I would, but Reddit needs an account.

i think it is true. im 19 so i see this first hand. folk around my age watch netflix, play fortnite, buy matcho coffee and doomscroll. I guarantee you that zoomers/aplhas etc do not give a shit about model trains save for the very few weirdos like me.

I am 20 and know at least a couple of other into trains who are our age.

>>
I've never given any fucks about trains, even though I can admit a good setup can look cool.
But I have always wanted to learn terrain building tricks like they use, so I can make a battlefield for all the Megazord model kits I've collected.
I just need more enemies in the proper scale for them to fight.

I thought that was a Shamrock Shake, but whatever.

This surely cannot be the only model train thread on this entire website.

I asked this on /n/ and have yet to get an answer. Is TT scale better for narrow gauge than HOn30?
>>
>>11579584
We went almost a year without one. I will revive the train threads the best I know how once this thread reaches page 10.
>>11579662
Depends on the narrow gauge in question, really, but it makes sense for most narrow gauge railways.
>>
>>11579584
Not so hard to believe. It's a hobby you need space for and later generations don't have any
>>
>>11579584
There used to be a general on /n/ but that got kicked out.
Ever since, threads pop up here but they are set to autosage after a while.
I don't know why.
