I did actually pick up my first Deora II at a thrift store the other day. I think I prefer the versions with either no surfboards or the molded-in boards. The removable surfboards never look like they're attached very securely and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people lose them easily.
>>11587026Most people just delete the boards. Frankly I hate how the molded-in boards look. Plus the modern tooling is an overall downgrade in terms of looks.
>>11587038I didn't even know it got a retool. I did find the indented windshield a bit weird, but I really like this deco a lot so it makes up for it.
>>11587610Iirc that indented windshield was the first retool. They did another retool a few years back to make it easier and cheaper to assemble by machine.
I bought some Hot Ones over the weekend. It's not that I really wanted either of them, but thanks to scalpers I almost never see these things on the pegs, so I couldn't pass them up.The Beamer procar is cool, though. And I already have an RLC version of Custom Otto with an opening hood, but it's nice to have one I don't mind being rough with. It's got good generic fastback energy and cool tail lights, and I'm always a sucker for gold rims.
>>11587996>a sucker for gold rims.I just like those wheels because they have nice, high-profile tires. Too many of hot wheels' modern tires are low profile and don't look right on older style vehicles.
>>11587996That BMW M1 is tempting, I saw a bunch of them on the pegs but couldn't justify buying one because I still have a bunch of the old Matchbox casting of that car from the early '80's.
>>11587996Amazing taillight details on Otto. Can you post comparasion with RLC one? BMW looks dope too. What about rear lights on it?I really like when they add lights. Viper and Merc SEC may be my top mainlines of this year.
>>11588359I just wish the viper had the threespoke wheels and was a slight bit lower.
working on my 1st custom
>>11588542
>>11588542>>11588543This is how it looked like when I started - the middle one. It was so messy so things can only go better, no matter what.
>>11588359Sure! I was torn whether to go with the blue one to match the OG Hot Wheels card art, or the orange one, but the matte black accents helped this one win out.
>>11588359The M1 does indeed have tail lights. It's a big selling point for the Hot Ones/Ultra Hots for me honestly. Also I HIGHLY recommend this new Jaguar V12 coupe. Aside from its gorgeous retro styling, cool-ass wheels, and wide stance, it does that thing I've been seeing more often lately where the grill and exhaust pipes are molded from the vac metal interior piece so they'll always be able to stand out on any repaint. Also it has half-opened windows which is something I feel like we never see.
>>11588590Call me crazy but I like red one more. I don't like how that black roof, while makes sense from design perspective, seems oddly too much of Corvette C2 vibe and black secondary color going as far as taillights accents that even more. Overall orange one is like they were trying for a realistic car but it's still so fantasy it's jarring as fuck. Feels like GTA cars. And I'm saying this as a big fan of retro HW. Personally, if I were to design it, I'd go for shorter black roof and add metallic frames around windows. Pic related.Red one is perfect. Color, stripe, wheels. Pure toy I want to grab and swoosh around.
Anywho, here's some other shit I got recently. This is my second Driftn' Break. It's a fun cyber-wagon and I love copper rims so I couldn't say no. I also just realized Long Bloc is kinda based on it.
Finally found this MBX Morgan 3-wheeler. One of the few castings I've actually been waiting on since it was revealed. Plus it goes well with this adorable Volvo.
Also this fuckin' thing. It was just too ridiculous to pass up. I feel like this casting would shine with a fully metal base and rubber wheels. Fantasy cars are fun and to hell with anyone who says otherwise.
nabbed this MBX Monaco off ebay. I just have a thing for landbarge police interceptors. Love that the lightbar is separate from the windshield so it can be red. That's certainly a relic of days past.
Mod Mill is actually really fun. I appreciate the concept of a car that is a halfway point between two other cars. Honestly wouldn't mind seeing other castings like this.
Finally came across one of these Action Comics sedans to go with my OG Batmobile. Guess the scalpers finally had their fill of them.
And I'm not usually into trucks, but the decos on these just spoke to me. Pretty sure I had the original '83 version of the Blazer as a kid. It's comically light without a metal base.
>>11588650Well, I suppose you're entitled to your opinion, but nothing about this makes me think of a C2. I do agree about the silver trim on the windows, though.
>>11588733>That's certainly a relic of days past.Speaking of relics of the past. Recently nabbed the same Dodge from local flea market. I love how it looks like old decommissioned one. Even down to rusty wheels.
>>11588922There's something to be said about natural aging on diecast cars. It's not something you can do intentionally.
>>11588946Yeah. That's why I love flea market finds.
>>11588722I don't quite understand what they're going for with the Long Bloc. Is it meant to look like a pinewood derby car?
>>11588542>>11588543>>11588544Can't wait to see where this goes. You know what you have in mind for the end result?
>>11589008Yes. It's a wagon version of Small Bloc which is meant to be a pinewood derby muscle car. I don't believe either are actually related to Fast Fish/Drift 'n Brake though.
>>11589053>Small Bloc which is meant to be a pinewood derby muscle car.Yeah, the illusion has been lost on a lot of the repaints that don't carry over the all-wood coloration. That said, as someone who made it all the way to Eagle Scout, an actual pinewood derby car would have been open-wheeled, and had black plastic wheels. Kind of a shame they passed on the opportunity, given how rare any open-wheeled casting is.
>>11588922That's rad. I really need to go to my parents and dig out all my old shit. There's gotta be at least two or three shoeboxes full up in the attic. Here's so old MBX stuff salvaged from a house fire at my Aunt's though. It's kinda hilarious how much better this Beetle casting is than their current one.
>>11588542>>11588543>>11588544nice! Always love seeing customs. Be sure to share the final product.>>11588597There's a zamac version of that Jag that looks awesome, and I'm kicking myself for not looking harder for it when I nabbed the zamac Volvo 240 from Wal-Mart. I didn't realize the zamac versions were Wal-Mart exclusives. I went back two days later and everything was cleaned out by scalpers.
>>11589048>You know what you have in mind for the end result?Forgive me lack of photo editing skills but end goal is supposed to be like this.
>>11588359>>11588394>5SPs continue to ruin every casting they're used onWhen will Mattel learn?!
>>11592431They look okay on Viper. The most 90s style out of all currently available wheels. The ones that ruin almost everything are PR5 tho.
>>11592452You shit on a basic rim like PR5 yet TRAP5s aren't even mentioned? I get the low profile look and basic design of PR5s not fitting on many cars, but you can't honestly tell me those make anything worse when TRAP5s exist and ALWAYS make something ten times worse.>>115924315SPs are only bad when they make the tires in puke inducing colors with equally terrible rim colors to boot.
>>11592704>but you can't honestly tell me those make anything worse when TRAP5s existNTA, but I can't bring myself to hate on the TRAP5s like every other collector under the sun. They're just too weird and fun, and they bring a cool sci-fi vibe to fantasy castings. They don't really have a place on many licensed models, but at least they're not boring, which is the sin of PR5 and 5SP
Although, I think they look better with matte coloring instead of chrome.
>>11592825Okay, give me a wheel that isn't boring or ugly as sin. No real rider rims they have to be cheapo mainlines.
>>11592865>give me a wheel that isn't boring or ugly as sin.I dunno. Most of them? lol. I like the deep dishes and the new "wire wheel in motion" that are on the 31 Ford in picrel. They'll be great for all kinds of classic/antique/hot rods that might have been saddled with 5SPs in the past. I also like whatever the fuck are on the big air bel-air, here.
>>11592827I like the non-chrome painted wheels more because the chrome they've been using recently just isn't bonded well. The regular paint is so much more ROBUSTthan chrome that flakes off while the car is still in the box.
>>11593245>that might have been saddled with 5SPs in the past.I think this is my biggest issue with the 5SPs now. We have other wheels that give the same vibe while simply looking better. Picrel has two other "five spoke" options that aren't 5SP, and I feel like basically every casting would be improved by using one of these options instead.I feel like I've gotten so much more interaction from saying "I HATE 5SP!!!" than I have from the dozens of posts I've made talking about what I like in the past few threads. Guess that's just human nature in a nutshell.
>>11593248>much more interaction On a board like this the less things happen in a thread the better. Half the other generals taught me that.
>>11592704>>11592825I like their looks too. They look damn great on concept cars. However they are not very good as thanks to the profile these wheels rub up against the sidewalls of the tracks, slowing the car down and causing crashes.Still they look good on concept cars, giving them futuristic looks.
Alright, I want to rebuild the World Race collection I had as a Kid to at least the captains. Should I go ahead and start looking now, or wait til 2028 when the 25th anniversary would be?
>>11593966Anniversary. Since we're getting close to the 30s, 2000s nostalgia is gonna pick up speed.
>>11593966I've never actually seen World Race now that I think about it. Does it hold up nowadays?
>>11589048>Can't wait to see where this goes>>11589709>nice! Always love seeing customs. Be sure to share the final product. Not sure. I mean I managed to mirror polish it...
>>11594558But it looks more like STH blue than RLC blue I wanted to get... Of course will have to wait for paint to dry, then clear coat and we will see.
>>11594559I mean considering how it looked like when I stated here >>11588544 it's still night and day but not what I really wanted. However I will stick with whatever comes out. The body is so polished I'm afraid of loosing details if I have to redo it.
>>11594116amazingly, the animation for world race holds up better than the acceleracers. solid 8/10, even though i grew up with acceleracers, this one still plays more often through my head. less corny and a little more grounded compared to the sequels.
>>11593374>the less things happen in a thread the betterI'd settle for more pics of little metal cars.Anyway, I caved and bought the ZAMAC Jaguar on ebay. I still highly recommend any version of this casting you can get your hands on. I was doing some reading, and the real V12 coupe this was based on was a touring racer build by Broadspeed Engineering in England. They were late and joined the '76 season after it was already half over, but the car proved to be very formidable. Unfortunately, the rushed production resulted in some unfortunate oversights, including a problematic driveshaft, and the engine cranked so hard it was starving itself of oil. When the car was running, it was setting records, but sadly it struggled to finish most races. They tried to make fixes, but ultimately dropped out before finishing a whole season.I love when castings pop up that are based on historically significant cars. It's always fun to learn something.
>>11594558>>11594559>>11594563Spectraflame paint looks like its really hard to achieve without professional tools. I don't think I have any spectraflame cars, the closest looking one is my old Mercy Breaker. The wki says its supposed to be purple, but it's always looked deep blue to me.
>>11595722Another car I've had a long time is this HW '41 Willys alongside a recent M2 Machines '41 Willys.
I've seen a few anons unfortunately can't get any of these because of scalpers or supposedly Mattel (or Ferrari?) banning the entire country of Italy from selling toys of cars built in their own country, so here's the F40 Competizione.
>>11595767They didn't detail the crossbar...
I got these color shifters (Mattel Dream Mobile and Nissan GT-R R32) and since I recently got some glow-in-the-dark paint, I thought they'd look cool if they had light/neon details.
>>11595774It's difficult to get a good pic in the dark but this should show the lights better. The skirt neon was done by glueing (with a gluestick) a rectangular piece of paper with the edge bent down underneath each side, and then painting the edge of the paper. It's all dollar-store materials, so it can all be washed and peeled off.
>>11595680>historically significant carsI had a similar experience finding out the history of this Prince Skyline. This car in this livery managed to win 2nd place against a Porsche in the 1964 Japan Grand Prix. Such an achievement got Nissan to start seriously developing sports cars and led to the Z cars and Skyline GTRs afterwards.
>>11595722This MercyBreaker looks like standard paint. Spectraflame is when metal body is slightly visible through the color. These two The Hot Ones >11587996 are spectraflame as these retro series often use spectraflame.
>>11595810And here it is with a descendant in Gran Turismo 7 livery with the '7' suspiciously absent. Thanks, Polyphony, you guys brought the GT franchise to new heights by making it an online-only pay-to-win grindfest.
>>11595814Its not a spectraflame-I meant its the closest I have because of how deep the color is. The real spectraflames always have such deep color and that mirror-like finish... Wish my stores carried Hot Ones but they only have Premiums and Silver series. I got the color to appear purple by focusing enough light on it, though.
>>11595849Spectraflame is opposite to deep. It's very thin, like minimal coat over zamac body - see green Dodge, zamac imperfections are clearly seen through spectraflame paint. Even McDonald's Mercy Breaker, the one with neons underglow, is closer to spectraflame thanks to barely any paint on it.
>>11595810That's the last straw, I'm buying the little blue fucker. Liked the looks and color, couldn't bring myself to shell out money, because I'm trying to concentrate on '10s-'50s cars and avoid too much JDM.
>>11595810Oh that's cool. Kinda makes me want one, now. But I have a soft spot for racing sedans, anyway.I've posted this little Honda before, but it has a cool story, too—it's based on the first American Honda race car, which competed in the 1970 Baja 1000. Similar to the Jaguar V12, it has a bit of a tragic story: it was engineered by a race shop in Michigan and shipped to California with minimal off-road testing. On paper, all of the improvements should have made it a solid competitor, but they had raised the ride height of the vehicle by 4 inches without changing the CV joints on the rear axles. When the car went airborne, the suspension would droop too far and the joints would disconnect, which basically meant no power to the drive wheels upon landing. The drivers would crawl under the car to reconnect them every time they got too much air, but eventually they called it quits to avoid getting stranded in the middle of the desert.
>>11596501The car was recovered and kicked around southern california for a while until some Honda specialist got his hands on it and restored it to running condition. I'd love for this casting to get a premium deco that attempts to recreate the modern day wear and tear. Might be a good subject if I ever wanna get into customs...
>>11596030Speaking of McDonald's, I remember I used to have a Blue Bandit (among a couple others). I never did figure out what that pop up thing in the back was supposed to be.
>>11596524No idea. Even as a kid I didn't get McDonald's fantasy ones. Mercy Breaker is an exception only because of neons undreneath. That was during the peak of NFS UG era hype and having a toy car with neons was every kids dream.
>>11596524I used to pretend it was some kind of prototype Batmobile and the pop-up thing was a rocket launcher or something.
>>11595767>I've seen a few anons unfortunately can't get any of these because of scalpers or supposedly Mattel (or Ferrari?) banning the entire country of Italy from selling toys of cars built in their own countryHuh? Aren't ferrari toy cars a common souvenir in Italy?
>>11596686Just a guess, but I think it's because they (Ferrari) have a contract with Bburago that doesn't allow anyone else to fuck with their home market.
Haven't been here for couple of months, was kind of surprised that there is an active thread lol, dropping by to say hi
>>11596686>>11596694I was joking about Ferraris being banned in Italy. A few months ago, there was an anon who couldn't find any in Italy despite them having released in Europe.>>11596046>'10s-'50s cars1910s cars? Have you had any luck finding some from that era? This Mo-Stash is the closest current HW car I can find to that era.
>>11596708I feel like diecast collecting has been getting more popular and mainstream lately. I don't know if it goes along with adult toy collecting being more popular nowadays or if there's something particular about this subset of it.
>>11596883It ebs and flows. That's how it always has been.
>>11596708Hellooo...
Finally found it a friend...
>fuck you ea, we are doing thisbased,
>>11598039>excuse me.gifbased on what?
>>11598276The middle one is actual race car
>>11598354The M3 GTR overall is real, but the particular silver/blue livery is unique to NFS.
>>11598468Ye I was talking about the real car. It's on display in a museum.
Speaking of BMWs... Here is the M1 from this year's BMW silver series set. This casting dates back to the 1980s, but hasn't been made much in recent decades.
And since some anons were mentioning the Majorette collection a while back. Here is the 1955 Bel Air from that set. It has side mirrors, rubber tires and spring suspension.
And here it is alongside Maisto's version of the same car. Note that the Maisto Bel Air has a hood ornament and different bumper.
Here is the undersides of both cars compared. The Majorette has a metal base and actually uses screws instead of rivets. Note that despite the differences of detailing, both cars have the spare tire humps detailed near their fuel tanks. On the real cars, the spare wheel sat upright inside the trunk, wedged into that space.
And here is the Majorette disassembled, showing the spring suspension and interior piece. One of the tires has been removed and set in the position where the spare wheel would have been kept on the real car.But look! The Maisto Bel Air has disappeared! Where could it have gone off to?
>>11598768>>11598772>>11598776Wtf happened to Maisto. I remember them being basically Matchbox tier in 90s and now this looks like these cheap china turds.
>>11598760Diecast castings have to be subject to mold degradation over time, right? I'm sure that's why some long running castings get updated every few years.
>>11599105Yes, in fact you'll notice the castings made up to1996 have the front bumper separate from the rest of the body because it was part of the then-metal base. They also used different names for this casting like Wind Splitter, Street Dog and Street Beast. After 1996, this casting didn't have another release until the re-tool with this plastic base in 2012. That's a 16 year hiatus! And even then, it's only been released in 2016 until now, another 9 year hiatus. At least it gives me hope that we might see some long-dormant castings return. I personally want to see castings of really early cars like Old #3, Old Number 5/5.5, Hot Heap, Torpedo Jones, and T-Bucket made again. I remember seeing those cars as a kid, thinking they were strange looking at the time, but they are exactly the type of cars I enjoy now.
>>11599322Ok, Hot Heap is definitely one I didn't see in stores, and wishing for a rerelease that's anything other than an exclusive collector's edition is a long reach, but its the type of car I'd like to see in new releases.
>>11599322>>11599322Hot Heap was literally re-released this year in that massive Sweet 16 anniversary set.
>>11596507Any guesses of how it was originally painted? The hood looks like it was a different color than the body.
>>11600040Game's Need for Speed Unbound for anyone wondering.
Anyone else loves early 2000s fantasy castings like these?
>>11600321They're pretty cool. Alot of amazing decals back then. When these were new I wasn't big into them, so I missed out on that whole era.
>>11600321Evil Twin is a GOAT for me. I love anything based on a Cadillac, and the lateral dual engines are too absurd to not love.>>11600040Whoah, that's awesome. I've never seen any color pics of it from 1970, but it's a safe bet it could have been the same shade of blue with a black hood, instead? The hood seems really roughed up, so maybe it was a donor from another car, or some kind of coating on the original hood came off and took paint with it? Just a guess.
>>11600456>>11600321Oh heck yes, I distinctly remember seeing the Twin Evil back in the early 2000s. I remember it not by the twin engines, but the sharp-tooth grille. Definitely looking forward to the next time they release it.
>>11600665It's certainly a casting with a lot of personality. I had kinda hoped they'd choose it for the Transformers crossover figures, but a Decepticon Boneshaker is cool, too, I guess.
>>11600695It's easily the casting I've got the most multiples of. So many great decos—it's really a modern classic. Although at a quarter-century old, is that just a regular classic?
>>11600695Reminds me of the color shifter released just this year of the 1980 Chevy Corvette that's supposed to represent Tracks from Transformers. It looks like a casting straight out of the 80s with its simplistic paint job, but its a actually a brand new 2025 release.>>11600715I was pretty relieved to see from the Hot Wheels wiki that this casting hasn't been abandoned, but I'm knocking on wood here-Mattel, I'm begging, please-please......do not give this wonderful casting the Art Cars treatment.
>>11600695>I had kinda hoped they'd choose it for the Transformers crossover figuresI hate that I never thought of that until now. A Twin Mill/Evil Twin two-pack practically sells itself. It's like they don't even want money.
>>11600757Everything will get a garish ugly Art Cars deco. It's only a matter of time
>>11600757>...do not give this wonderful casting the Art Cars treatment.I can easily see this painted in art cars colors like this impala. Together with skull wheels.
>>11600987Evil Twin isn't a mascot car. They chose TM and BS because those are the faces of the brand. If anything they'd hate money not to use their most iconic cars for a limited crossover.
Ollie's trip saw me finding a ton of Jada Pink Slips from pic related and a bunch of Nascar. Of course the only ones available from the Jada wave were the three on the bottom and the 911 GT3 RS, which I would have gotten if it were white like it should be.
Just bought some loose oldies and found this Barracuda. This livery is not even listed on HW wiki at all. Similar ones are for 2017 and 2021. I have no idea what is it, year code K19.

>>11600456>>11600695>>11600715These two are mine.White Grave'Rave from 2002 and this awesome blue one.
>>11602004Blue one shows a very clever livery which is playing on it's name itself. It's classic 3 wise monkeys theme 'See no, Hear no, Speak no' and given this car name.. Evil.
>>11602010Plus awesome demons on top. Literally an old mainline with a better spooky stuff than actual Halloween edition cars.Shame it doesn't roll so well. White one rolls perfectly but blue tends to jam wheels.
>>11602013>Shame it doesn't roll so well.I've heard people say this about various versions of the casting. My first experience was with the metal-base "Classics" versions, and they all roll fine. I've since bought a lot of other releases, both premium and mainline, and they're generally okay as well. The only ones that don't roll well, in my experience, are the ones with rubber tires from RLC.
>>11602036>the ones with rubber tires from RLC.That said, it's a small price to pay. Part of why I love the car so much is how much it exaggerates the "lead sled" aesthetic, by being so long and low and tapered. I'm not sure I'd be willing to sacrifice the skirted fenders just for better rolling. I fucking love skirted fenders.
>>11602036It's random. Sometimes blue one rolls fine, sometimes gets stuck. And I checked - wheels are fine. https://streamable.com/sgfp5e
>>11601935Twin Mill, Deora 2, Bone Shaker, Purple Passion (Evin Twin's more square brother), Rodger Dodger. Those are the evergreen mascots. Depending on period you'll have stuff like El Segundo Coupe, Sho Stopper/Seared Tuner, Quick 'n Sik, etc.
>>11602115>Depending on period you'll have stuff like El Segundo Coupe, Sho Stopper/Seared Tuner, Quick 'n Sik, etc.Evil Twin might not be as popular as the first batch you mentioned, but it's leagues ahead of that bunch. If those are "mascot cars", then so is Evil Twin—it's a popular casting that's stayed in production for almost 25 years at this point, with multiple premium/collector releases.
>>11602121Evil Twin is only popular among hot rod boomer collectors like us. Not very popular casting overall. I wouldn't call it a mascot of HW as due to low clearance it gets stuck on track so it's not even fun for kids. Hot Wheels mascots are usually seen on loops and jumps and Evil Twin is afraid of these.I'd add Nightshifter tho.
>>11602131>Evil Twin is only popular among hot rod boomer collectors like us.So, the same people that Deora and Twin Mill are popular with?>I wouldn't call it a mascot of HW as due to low clearance it gets stuck on trackSuddenly this is a criteria?Sounds like an awful lot of goalpost-shuffling. It seems to me that Evil Twin is one of the more iconic castings of the past few decades—it's been a mainline regular since its debut, has multiple premium/collector/special editions, and has been featured in multiple video games. And now, it's very fondly remembered by collectors who got into the game 20+ years ago as one of their first cars. While you can argue Boneshaker was MORE popular, and thus a better choice for a Transformers crossover, to claim that Evil Twin was somehow ineligible because it's not a "mascot car" is silly.I'd say the biggest reason Evil Twin wasn't an option for the Transformers crossover is simply because Twin Mill was always going to be option #1, and they didn't want to have two cars with the same design gimmick (dual engines).

>>11602121>>11602131>>11602152I don't make the rules. I love Evil Twin's design. But when people want a Larry Wood lead sled, Purple Passion wins out.And sure, it's lasted over 25 years, but that doesn't necessarily mean the same as Mattel plastering you over all the packaging, memorabilia, games, cartoons and ads.It lacks the significance of Twin Mill and Deora (former is one of the earliest fantasy and later is a Sweet Sixteen member), it's overlooked by the Merc (Purple Passion), and when Mattel tries to pull boomer car for mascot role it's the Bone Shaker or Rodger Dodger. In a perfect world Evil Twin would get its respect, the mainline would have better budget, and the aesthetic themes used currently didn't look like monkey butt half the time.P.S.>NightshifterMore a period mascot like El Segundo Coupe unless Mattel still heavily pushes it into the 2030s without falter.>TFNo it's really just Bone Shaker being the only other mascot car on TM's level. It took that spot from Red Baron who originally was an honorary second mascot, but Mattel lost the rights to it and Bone Shaker quickly proved to be a fan favorite. Also yes it's silly that it isn't picked because it isn't a mascot, but it's a crossover trying to get everyone's money, and they probably would pick BS because BS is the other cool car that's shoved down everyone's throats.>'57 ChevyIn this day and age only 50+ year old men still give a shit about it. Most kids now do not care, either because it ain't fantasy (reddit has ruined fantasy car discussion among younger collectors change my mind) or it's not JDM/Euro.
I've never been a huge fan of fantasy castings in general, but there are a small, small selection of exceptions. I like the Shadow Jet II even if it isn't the most exciting or visually interesting fantasy casting just because kid me thought it was fucking awesome to have what was essentially an F-117 in car form. I still have one just like pic related hidden in a box somewhere that I've been trying to find.
>>11602984I always loved any car with hidden/skirted wheels like that.>>11602932>reddit has ruined fantasy car discussion among younger collectors change my mindYou spend too much time online.
>>11602657>>11602748I have it.
Finally managed to assemble a small collection of Tokyo taxis. Any fellow 1/43 guys here?
>>11603206
>>11603033>spend too much time onlineI'm not even on reddit that often.
>>11603206The white one gives me early TXR trauma.
>>11601997Nice, I saw that Bentley when I got this Supra.
>>11602612I've wanted to get a 57 Chevy but the only one I've ever come across was pic related. I passed it up at the time but kind of regret it now which is why situations like >>11601921 can be so disappointing. You can finally find a cast you've been looking for but then have to make the desicion: do you want to have a singular, weird example of this car (that may or may not grow on you), or do you want to have to wait until you find a new version, which could take over a year, or worst case scenario, never, if production for that cast actually ends.
>>11601921Speaking of Breaking Bad, HW released the Custom Pontiac Aztek in a similar color to the show car this year. It even has different wheels that mimic the car's missing hubcaps on the rear wheels. The hat and glasses in the trunk are an intentional reference to the show, as the main character wears both of these.
>>11603555These are in stock at my local Walmart; Check yours and see if you get lucky
>>11603555I'd get this black one, then using whiteboard marker remove that livery and keep as pure black with whitewall wheels.
>>11603558I remember when demand for used Pontiac Azteks went through the fucking ROOF because of this show. Hilarious, given the car's resoundingly negative reputation, previously—I read multiple articles about how it was the ugliest car GM had ever made or some shit. In retrospect, it's fairly unremarkable—stuff like the Cybertruck has pushed the concept of an "ugly" car into a whole new stratosphere.
>>11603555If there's a casting I want but I don't like the decos I'm finding, I'm usually happy to wait it out. Failing that, there's always ebay.
7-Eleven at it again.
>>11603558lol that's cool. I almost bought one the other day just because I remember how much people used to rag on it, so the idea of a hot rod Aztek was inherently amusing. Wasn't one of the selling points that it had a built-in tent that folded out of the rear hatch for camping?
>>11603558The idea of a fucking Aztek of all cars being tuned up like that is hilarious. It's like the extreme peak of NFS/F&F/Pimp My Ride era tuner culture where everyone thought their shitbox Corollas and Focuses could be turned into flashy racing machines.
>>11603941Will these be distributed to stores like the Hot Wheels Supra or will it only be available online?
I saw this at the store the other day and had a chuckle. What do you think, is this worth $10 for the novelty?
>>11604594Omg i need this.
>>11604644>portashitters covered in massive shit stains>shit stains on the sides of the truck and tiresIt's infantile for sure, but I can't be mad at it because they just embrace the theme completely.
>>11604644I actually really like the design of the rig. Shame Hot Wheels is jewing out on axles, though. This would look much cooler with 5. Only three axles looks silly.
>>11604700The actual truck is a pretty good design. I wouldn't mind seeing it with a different trailer/carrier.
Picked up the 850 Estate from the latest Fast Wagons at my local flea market today. I like this racing livery a lot better than the flat yellow one from the '21 set. The molded-in spare in the back matching the wheels is a nice touch, though I'm not sure if that holds true for every version of this casting.
>>11605953>though I'm not sure if that holds true for every version of this casting. It doesn't. Mine has a 10-spoke spare, too. Custom interior molds for each wheel option would definitely be too extravagant for Hot Wheels, but at least 10 spokes seem to be a common wheel for the casting.
>>11606512>10 spokes seem to be a common wheel for the casting.I'd wager this is because the first edition of the casting was based on a specific 850 from the '94 British Touring Car Championship, which had 10 spoke wheels. Personally, I think 5 spokes are more "Volvo" wheels, but the casting looks great either way.
>>11606515The 850 is definitely one of my new favorites. I like how solid it feels in hand and it's just a great-looking car overall. I'm still new to collecting and working out what kinds of things I'm interested in chasing after, but I think I've had a pretty good start so far.
>>11606607Yeah, it hits a sweet spot for me as a fan of touring cars, Volvos, and wagons, but it's also just a great casting—it's nice and boxy, but still tapered along certain edges to give it some shapeliness. The body being built out of three pieces means the rubrails and grill can always be a separate color regardless of paint/tampo budget. It also disguises the rear tab as a Euro-style license plate to avoid having a rivet post coming down through the roof in the back, which is always a concern for station wagon castings, so I enjoy seeing clever work-arounds.
>>11603206>>11603221The only 1/43 scale I've got is this Maisto 2017 Nissan GT-R. Everything on it is nicely detailed except for the extremely cheap looking plastic wheels. I have a soft spot for it as it was the first diecast car I intentionally bought and got me to start collecting. Before this, I had a rule that if I was going to buy diecast cars, they had to be Toyotas. I only frequented a single store at the time and after almost a year of seeing this one warming a shelf and no Toyotas, I finally decided: "Y'know what? It's a good car in Need for Speed Heat, and there's also no Toyotas there."
>>11608443Years of patience and store jumping have rewarded me, though--I recently managed to find the most hideous rendition of the Toyota FJ Cruiser I think I've ever seen.
>>11608451It has rubber tires, a pullback motor, and opening doors, but the proportions and paint job are just so... sloppy looking for its size. It's also a Maisto, 1:49 scale.
>>11607816I do find myself mostly gravitating towards racing/touring liveries over plain paint jobs and especially over Art Cars. The only Art Car I've seen so far that I've liked enough to actually get is the sakura Datsun 240Z.
>>11603639I actually did find this one a while ago! Although it was at a Dollar General instead of Walmart.>>11603686If I did get it, I'd keep the livery, even if it looks weird. For me, personally, it just doesn't feel right to modify unless the paint is ruined and a restoration is needed like>>11588544.
One thing I can at least appreciate about Maisto is that they have redundancy in their castings. Same cars with same paint jobs can show up a year later in a different store, so you have a better chance of finding a car you like, even if you missed it the first time. I first saw the blue 2023 Nissan Z over a year ago at one store, missed out on it, but was able to get it from another store's restock just a couple weeks ago. Now if only I could find the red 2021 Corolla outside of a 20-pack...
>>11602115Bone Shaker always felt like the "Elf on the Shelf" of Hot Wheels, to me.
Got 2003 Eclipse from Happy Meal. the one that came with Indiana Jones boulder. Sadly with no bottom.
>>11608501So decided to, well, since there is no interor and I have broken missing floor... why not add neons underglow?Quick prototype using Tic Tac cap as a battery holder. Then some cheap led strip...
>>11608502Advanced beta. Everything almost sorted out.
>>11608503And finally functionality test. Now adding a switch and then visuals.
>>11608504I'm planning something inspired by this. Black windows, blue metallic paint and cool wheels. I wish I could print decals...
>>11608454It looks like one of those no-name cars you'd find at like a gas station or dollar store.
>>11608468I do miss the old days of cars when they had some actual color and style to them off the lot and it wasn't just a sea of white/black/gray/very dark blue crossovers. That sky blue/white/chrome combo is so iconic for the 1950s and the red/white looks great as well.
>>11608682>I do miss the old days of cars when they had some actual colorI think we're finally starting to heal on this front. I have a long commute and spend a lot of time looking at cars. 20 years ago was pretty bleak—everything was white, black, or gray. But over the past several years I've finally started to see shades of copper and gold and green that feel like they were ripped right out of Hot Wheel's spectraflame catalog. Everything's still an ugly crossover, tho, lol.
>>11608488Same about Welly, same paintjobs for 10-15 years so you'd never miss out. Also I think Welly is even better than Maisto in terms of price-to-quality. Sure they had dogshit headlights but the rest is neat, they are well-detailed and have clear windows with actual interiors which Maisto lacks in their budget line. Personally I like them for having a lot of mundane daily cars you'd never see from other brands. I mean just check these:youtube.com/watch?v=OUCcHqQ7yqQ&pp=ygUUd2VsbHkgMTo2MCBjaGV2cm9sZXQ%3D
Got a lot of stock car legends from ebay for a decent price. This line is fucking GOAT. Will post some pics after I free them.
>>11609151I really love the look of these things. Late 90s/early 00s Johnny Lightning was peak.
I really only bought the lot for these two. The Mercury Cyclone is an exquisite casting with a perfect deco. I love the polished metal bases, too, such a nice weight.
And the bonus cars are great. The Dodge Daytona in particular is growing on me. I love the bold colors and how ridiculously long it is
Oh I also got this Nissan. I never cared for zamac in photos, but in hand it's oddly appealing—it's like "Spectraflame Graphite"
>>11609432I swear I used to have that exact red Ford in 1:64 as a kid. Pretty sure it wasn't a Johnny Lightning, but it was distinctly higher quality than my Hot Wheels and Matchboxes with a heavier body and rubber tires.
>>11609719>I swear I used to have that exact red Ford in 1:64 as a kid.Well, it's based on David Pearson's '67 Ford Fairlane, so it's possible there was a non-JL version, maybe by Race Champions or Action, who both did a lot of stock cars for the collector market.
>>11608682kei cars are very colorful, many have 50s color tones too
I have fallen down the Choro Q rabbit hole and I don't think I can get up.
>>11610071pretty based, anon.BTW, have you seen these new Choro "Q's"? They have completely articulated axles so you can put them in little cartoony drift poses and whatnot. It's kind of sad to loose the pull-back feature, but something about this really tickles me.
>>11609443>Spectraflame Graphiteit basically is. The secret to spectraflame is that it's an extremely thin coat of paint, and most of the effect comes from the ZAMAC texture itself.
>>11610071I've seen Choro Qs get really expensive on the aftermarket so best of luck to you. They're neat for what they are, but the prices some people ask for them are insane, especially for popular JDM cars.
>>11609438>Buddy BakerIf you're into trivia, he was the first driver to break the 200mph barrier on a closed course, in a Dodge Daytona, although not that specific livery, but picrel.
My original introduction to them was the Funrise Penny Racers(this little guy was one of my favorites, but I lost it), but the Choro Q games were what increased my interest.>>11610090Yes, I've seen those and they're cute, too, but I don't think they're quite my cup of tea.
