>>11604946Scale that is not labelled. Sort of a boomer term, but it is why those old Aurora, Revell and Monogram kits do not have a consistent size.Airfix were the first to really create a set scale in the form of 1:72, then other companies follow.

>>11605592>academy F-14 but superioris it now? tamiya's is a downscaled version of their 1/48 F-14; it'll be good no doubt but it's 2x the academy's parts count and assembly is more complex (I almost got tired reading the instructions)

Interior of the Focus rally car is done. While these ribbons were much easier to cut to size they definitely were much harder to actually use. They're obviously much thicker than the thin plastic they intend you to use, and as such some of the routing (like going back through the buckles again) is physically impossible. Not only that, but fighting with the fraying ends was a complete nightmare. By the end I had gotten sick of it and half assed the belts for the 2nd seat. I've probably spent at least an hour on my hands and knees combing through my carpet trying to find the buckles when they would keep jumping out of my tweezers. I also realized when it was far too late that I got the seats switched, so I guess this car is from an alternate universe where Nicky was the driver and not Colin. I now firmly know I never want to build a race car with a 6 point harness ever again unless I can get a premade one. If they were photoetch like most aircraft belts are, I don't think it would have been this hard and I'd be willing to take that trade off for not looking as good or realistic. On to the suspension and underside next probably. I'm really not looking forward to doing the exterior decals at all. Wish me luck

Why does the civil boat market suck so much, there are like 6 good sets and the rest are just titanics and titanics and titanic variants and modern titanic equivalentsNow they also make sets where you have 2 titanics of a different scale in 1 box, like what the fuckIt could be the most interesting segment because specialized civil ships do vary a lot and each one looks completely different. Fishing boats, research vessels, rescue boats, icebreakers, all kinds of tugboats etc, they all have different equipment and are usually quite colorful which I like
Bruh, this looks like ass. I wanted to do a brushed camo effect with airbrush, so I used Gunze masking snot. When it didn't want to come off I used warm water to loosen it up, and I think the acrylic paint wasn't fully dried yet and did this to the surface. So... free weathering I guess? Looks kinda like the Japs using poor quality paint. I also managed to scratch the paint at a few places down to the black primer trying to get it off, so I guess that's also free weathering. Also the masking was shitty in a few places, like the cupola, but I guess that's also free weathering. If I lightly spray it with thinner using an airbrush to dissolve and re-dry the surface of the paint, will it fix it, or will it just cause another disaster?
Yep, kinda poopoo-peepee.

>>11608661>have you ever brush painted alcohol based acrylics?
>>11608597>Alcohol based acrylics behave way better in an airbrishWould you say it's because it dries faster? Hmm, if only there was a way to slow that down...or rather...retard it.This post was made by Mr Hobby Acqueous gang.
>>11608716Why would you need to slow it down when airbrushing? Maybe very slightly if it dries mid air due to very low humidity. The alcohol drying fast and giving less surface tension makes it much better for airbrushing. But in brush painting application the alcohol is often strong enough to strip previous layers, so you have to be very anal in your approach and technique. With water based paints you can paint a lot differently. And for wet blending can't beat oils.
>>11608716Man, I've had a very mixed success with brushpainting with Tamiya acrylics. Some colours seemed to be way easier to paint than others. But maybe I'm just retarded. What paint:thinner:retarder ratio do you use? Also been making a Su-15TM but kinda fucked up the bare metal paintjob. Cheaping out on some surfacer did not work too great. Next I plan on doing the 1/72 Tamiya F-51D Mustang, so can someone here recommend a good way to make that aluminium look with a paintbrush?
>>11609127Your best bet is probably going through aluminum colors of different brands till you find the perfect one. Model Master metal colors used to be perfect, but now they're extinct in the wild. Maybe AK?
>>11609135The AK 3rd Gen series is the most consistent one in every single aspect I have tried (both regular and metallic paint). There are a few outliers that are stinkers, but most of the paints are very consistent in coverage, quality, consistency and ease of use. The metallics are good for brush painting small details, I'm not entirely sure about painting large flat surfaces. Usually airbrushing is your best bet here. Also metallics specifically benefit a lot from being sprayed very evenly and in thin layers so the flakes align. Apparently Vallejo metallics are better for brush painting, but I have no first hand experience. I have sprayed Tamiya metallics with good results, but Alclad is apparently the best you can get. I think someone said that AK Xtreme Metal is a rebrand of that shit in Europe, but I can not 100% confirm. I did try them and they were great though.
>>11609135>>11609191I actually used the AK Xtreme Metal for this model, but I feel that they should be used with an airbrush (and some base coat of black primer). I found this korean(?) dude on YT that only paints models by hand, I'll probably try out whatever he is using.
>>11609212Yeah as I said I don't know if there's really any good way of applying the metallics with a brush in any good way, the way the metal flakes in the paint work, extremely thin layers and great alignment from such layers is the key. If you really don't have any way of using an airbrush, then maybe you could try a rattle can? Then again you can get one of those shitty USB airbrushes for like 40 bucks so... And about the black primer, it should absolutely be a coat of gloss black. I have had good results with Tamiya X-1 and Mr. Color GX-2.
>had to buy a new workplace PC and a new VESA mount over more shit for the pile of shame I don't know why I feel bad, I did what I was supposed to do. But I feel like I'm not careful I'll end up like those homeless who don't have toes because they don't have money for shoes in December, but somehow always have money to absolutely blackout plastered.
>>11608691Yes. You have to thin them with water.
I have a tank that I've painted dark yellow and dark green. I'm about to do a slight drybrush to bring out the details but here comes the problem. Should I drybrush each color with their lightened shades or should I drybrush the whole thing in lightened dark yellow?
>>11610276Hypothetically is that green and yellow tank a Chi-Ha that you dunked in water while the paint on it had not dried yet?But in any case the answer depends on several things. 1) What effect are you trying to achieve? Just some contrast or heavy signs of wear and tear?2) How much do you care? Are you in this hobby to improve, see things through, improve and be proud of your models or just want to rush through your kits in order to have the absolute minimal return on your investment?Doing the light base color will show up with more contrast and look like heavier wear and chipping on the green parts. Doing separate colors for the respective colors will leave a more subtle effect that may or may not be desired, but will probably look better in the end because you can do partial chipping with the yellow as well and have a better end result with different finishes.
>>11610291Nah, it's a King Tiger :D I'm aiming for some contrast and want the colors to just pop a little. I really don't like to make my models super worn and dirty. So I think separate colors is the way I'll do it. I've built a couple of tanks before but this is the first one that has multiple colors so this is a new kind of problem for me. Thanks for the advice
>rush through your kits in order to have the absolute minimal return on your investmentthat's me
>>11609127>What paint:thinner:retarder ratio do you use? Some of my jars have been conpletely fucked ao it varies but by default I do 1:1 and only a few drops of retarder, otherwise it takes a full day for a single thin coat to dry.>a good way to make that aluminium look with a paintbrusI've had amazing results with Vallejo's chrome. >>11611547lol how much did you pay for those? Printed 1/72 figures are like a dollar a pop including work time. As for painting doing a zenithal and investing in some contrast colors is pretty much a lifesaver if you plan on painting more than just a few. Or at least mix your own contrast medium out of some matte medium. You do the base colors with those contrast paints and then just layer on as many highlights as you wish after that until you are pleased. And maybe a wash before or after in there somewhere to bring it all together. At such a small scale you pretty much have to count on the (good) molding of the figure to help you out. Shit molds and manual layering will drive you insane. Zenithal + contrast helps to cut the work in half so you can focus the manual brushwork on where it matters.

Went to the Copenhagen model show (which is mostly trains) and met one of the most based boomers I've ever seen. 250 BF-109s, all in different scheme/model. 24 years of builds he said.
>>11612351Every single one of them with information about Staffel, pilot and when/where it is from. Can't not respect the commitment, the general standard was pretty high (although not the greatest models you've ever seen)
Taiwananon here. Still rangeblocked from imageposting so I will compensate with a wall of text. So, this was a big event, doujin/anime x scale modeling convention. I'd say it was 5% military models, 10% other (fantasy, sci-fi, anime, gunpla, dioramas) models, 5% modeling-related stalls and 80% anime stuff. Also army recruiters outside had a stinger launcher set up right under the final approach route for the nearby airport which I found kinda funny. Lots and lots of cosplayers. There was a guy with three big containerfuls of resin cast airplane parts and I bought me a Kita-chan flipbook. Thanks for reading my blog. Point is, I only took pictures of military stuff, right. Only the tanks, planes and boats - maybe one third of all the models at the convention, not including the stalls. I ran out of battery and had around 800 photos by the end of the third hour. I'm going to have to take a few days sorting them, so you won't be getting them today. Now imgur appears to be down at the minute, and I'm curious: How would I go about uploading so many photos? For exmaple, there are around 277 tank model pictures of maybe 100-150 individual models and imgur only allows 50 uploads per hour. Even taking away the worse ones (maybe one third to half) that still several hundred images. Is there another image hosting service that would allow for these big album uploads?I'll go back and take pictures of the non-military stuff tomorrow, but I won't be exhaustive. Lots of scantily-clad women and mecha.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what can I do if I want something around the scale of 1:4000? Buy a 3D printer? Are they even accurate enough with dimensions and colors at those kinds of scales?Basically, I'd like to be able to build something similar to an entire battle scene on a single desk. It would be nice to see both sides of a fight, big terrain features, infrastructure and railways all in a single build, so I'm thinking 1:4000 would be the scale to go for. More conventional stuff like assembling your own diorama with a single vehicle and some soldiers around it also seems interesting, but it's not what I'm looking for right now. Also, I'm pretty sure there was a model railways thread around here somewhere, do you guys happen to know how it died? I'd have thought that such an autistic hobby would be pretty popular on 4chan.
>>11613557>Buy a 3D printer?Yes>Are they even accurate enough with dimensions and colors at those kinds of scales? What the fuck are you talking about? Fully colored prints are only done by industrial printers. Get a resin printer and paint it. >so I'm thinking 1:4000 would be the scale to go forDo you comprehend that a man at that scale would be under half a millimeter? An Abrams tank would be 2 mm in length. You could stack grains of sand and set up that battle.
>>11613565>Do you comprehend that a man at that scale would be under half a millimeter? An Abrams tank would be 2 mm in length. You could stack grains of sand and set up that battle. You're actually right, I didn't think that through, my bad. The problem is that I first thought about making part of a railway network with multiple stations on a single desk and the only way I could see of fitting all of that in would be to choose a scale that would make the wagons just a few mm. That would basically be a map with very small moving rectangles on it, which seems cute to me, but it's true that it wouldn't work for other vehicles and it would look pretty weird even for trains. Something more like 1:1000 would probably be more appropriate for tanks and things like that.>What the fuck are you talking about? Fully colored prints are only done by industrial printers. Get a resin printer and paint it.I understood that even normal 3D printers can use filaments of different colors in a single print, though I'm not sure how much accuracy and detail I can get, I'll look into it.
>>11611179Hyundai HYC 550-6S. None of that FD-186 faggot shit. It's a lot more efficient and doesn't get hot
>>11613588>Something more like 1:1000 would probably be more appropriate for tanks and things like that.If you want any people represented at all, then going smaller than 1/300-1/350 will be retarded. (This is the smallest scale any land vehicles will be available as plastic kits) Even at that small of a scale you can't space out things at realistic distances. Sure you could print even smaller, but it will get retarded small.>I understood that even normal 3D printers can use filaments of different colors in a single printYeah man, you will for sure be able to multi-color print those 2mm vehicles with a 0,4mm nozzle on an FDM printer. Minecraft cars will have larger voxel resolution at that point.

Taiwan Anon here. The photos are in, 693 of them to be exact. Allegedly the largest scale modeling competition in Asia. I separated my photos into 8 categories. Originally the best and the rest were separated, making a total of 12, but that was too much so everything is in one big pile now.Tanks. First place was, I believe, the M32. I talked to the guy a bit so I recognized him, but otherwise they did not announce the winners' entries. The Hetzer was 1/72 and had really good figures.Judges took away the shortlisted entrants to judge them further in the middle of all this. They returned most of them, but I believe first place might be missing for all the other categories.https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPGCItVU2dMniDemD-vwhP_8KylNTpnGlPcTSQIHHriqqPilwgKKFsmzQY14WeXwA?key=aEtiR0tsUXRrWDFfTFZEaWRtZ3pRb1RIb0dfN1JBProps. >>11613245thanks anon
>>11614128>that poolkek. good shit though
>>11614127Can you explain this phenomena - most of the models range from great to excellent, the figures are okay to great and then the bases/dioramas have just straight up static grass fields with shit hovering on top or best case a bunch of unpainted foliage more or less blended into some dirt or snow? Is this cultural or something? Is only the model considered the main deal and everything else is ehh whatever? Is it a skill issue and asians can't into terrain? Because when I look at like Spanish model autists, they spend more time blending a fucking freehanded coke can into the roadside dirt than twitterbro does on his actual models.
>>11614127I enjoyed the true lies harrier, such a wonderful piece
>>11614128Some really fun ideas there. The U-2 (?) on the airfield/museum is great and the kid at the computer smoking niggers got a chuckle out of me.
>>11614167I never really noticed before, but yeah, I see where you're coming from. I think it's a case of putting all the effort into the tank and the terrain more being an afterthought. Maybe all the people good with terrains all went to the diorama category. Maybe half-melted snowfields or non-green grass are just hard for tropical country people. Maybe the floating tiger or jackson is a case of a universal base or pre-cut lawn. I haven't a clue.
>>11614167I see this a lot too. As far as I can tell there are two kinds of people making dioramas, and the first category gets these results you speak of. First, there's the people that simply think everything needs to be in a diorama to be taken seriously. They have no real vision or idea for the diorama so the tank (particularly) just sits on a road or the jet sits on a carrier deck. Sometimes it's literally just an unrolled mat of that cheap looking grass material. The second category want to tell a story with the diorama or show a funny little scene off. The U-2 is a perfect example of this with the split between operational and museum condition, or the crew with a man with his head in the ground. I see a lot of the latter in large train builds by clubs where people love to hide little easter eggs around the whole set. tl;dr it's sovl vs no sovl
>>11614182Going from the rules of my local IPMS, it comes down to what gets judged and what doesn't.Namely, bases are NOT judged, which is why many usually are just simple affairs if not outright phoned in - they're not being judged so as long as it gives the context for the model itself, if you don't want to put in the effort you don't have to.Alternatively, if you do put in the effort, then might as well go all the way and make it a diorama. This in particular is where the catch is - if you enter a model and the judges decide the base is as much a focus as the model, they have the authority to MOVE your entry into the diorama category.
>know that paint can never truly match >stressing yourself over it will only bring you pain>still have paint autism>Still want paint that's as close as possible >want mr color c391 interior turquoise >they don't do an aqueous version>everyone else's is varying shades of wrong>some more wrong than others Fuuuckkk
>>11614308Sounds like some American HOA or leddit moderator level of drunk on power shit.I've ran a few friendly painting competitions and just told the judges to take the added stuff like the base or diorama into account if it helps elevate the model, but not to dock any points if it's not there.
>>11614308If it's an Open Rules competition (most are) I've been an Open judge and moving a piece to diorama must generally satisfy one or both of two conditions:1. It tells some sort of story. It's not just a Panther in a bush, there are figures doing things. Retreating, fighting, moving up. Something is happening. This distinguishes it from elaborate static scenery. 2. The piece will do BETTER in the category it gets moved to. So if it's a bronze where it is, but a silver in the new category then it goes there. There's some flexibility there, intended to favour the participant. If you've done a banger job on the scenery but it depicts no action and we can fudge you into diorama as a vignette for a better score, we'll do it. If it tells a story but the scene is a bit shit, we might narf you back to vehicle or ordnance and just judge that part if it'll score better. That said, some people are just fucking cunts so not every competition will adhere to the same spirit. I know of at least one instance where the judges judged themselves and won, despite the flagrant conflict of interest. But this is generally rare and most competitions try to avoid even the appearance of this.

>>11615156no
>>11615156Post pics and we can help you out. Anything is better than the retard fight. This thread is lacking models, good or bad.
>>11615156If you see absolutely no improvement after like 3 builds and actively trying to take time to get better - yes.If you just don't find the time to actually build/paint, set aside a certain amount of time every night or on specific days where you will do that and then put effort into trying out more than the bare necessity.
Continuing on with my T-72 build, but I fucked up in that I glued down that upper glacis V piece before thinking about ERA bricks so now it looks like a weird mix of cold war and modern setup. >>11615199The french like to take credit for them, but aside from the post-war markings, these tanks were 100% japanese mods.If I remembered right, the added armor was filled with sand or concrete and the tank was leaning to the front due to its weight.
>>11615568I've used a Paasche d3000r compressor for about 7 years now and never had an issue with it. It is decently quiet. For airbrushes, I would recommend a Badger Patriot 105 for the cheap option or an Iwata HP-CS Eclipse if you have the money. I started with the badger and eventually upgraded to the Iwata.
>>11615589What's the benefit of the higher end airbrushes?
>>11615595Better materials, tolerances and seals. You know your good airbrush isn't going to sputtet or leak air or have a shitty needle.

Yes>You know your good airbrush isn't going to sputtet or leak air or have a shitty needle.I don't know what you mean by "shitty needle" but otherwise this is all skill issue. If you don't think properly and clog your shit, you will still get these.
>>11615595The badger does fine if you want the smooth airbrush finish and need to spray large areas for primer or color coats. It can do medium size details reasonably well. The Iwata does the same but is also much, much better at small details and fine lines. The Iwata is also easier to use, disassemble, and clean than the Badger. If you are committed to the airbrush thing I highly recommend going straight to the Iwata. My first thought when I started using it was "fuck I wasted years using that Badger!" but the Badger is still a decent airbrush. For ref, the pic related is what I like the Iwata for. The fine preshading patterns are really easy with it. I freehanded the camo pattern with it as well, which I would not have trusted the badger to do.

I'm simultaneously satisfied and unhappy with the underside. Its a bit too brown I think. might rub some more of the wash off before I continuehaving an unpainted body is nice because I'm able to just wipe off the bits of overspray. I still need to touch it up a little in some spots because clearly my masking skills are lacking
>>11617244>Sees backgroundProbably a hint... I say either a P-38 or (hopefully) an E.E Lightning. If neither of those, then maybe a Hawker Tempest or even a F-35 Lightning II (doubtful).
>>11617345I guess P-47 might be another option too.

>>11617084I'm excited to see this once you get to unmask it. Is the MG hard to find nowadays? I assume this is a bandai kit?
>>11617549>I don’t think I could quantify how little I care about Europe.Yes, you can, by definition, not quantify something infinitesimally small, you fat retard.
>>11618475There are three versions of the Kotobyukia 1/100 "Full Action" Rex - MGS1, Black MGS1 with special decals, and MGS4 with the 'damaged' parts and alternate pilot figures. The original MGS1 version (which includes a Chain Base floor piece and mount stand to support it standing, Liquid Snake pilot figure, Solid Snake figure, Solid Snake holding a Stinger missile figure, and Gray Fox to pose under the foot) is currently up on the Koto US page for $80 before shipping. And while it's not a bandai kit, I have built it and I'd describe it like a really big Real Grade - a lot of it is layering but there are working pistons and it'll do more or less any pose from the game.
>>11618475it's the kotobukiya reissue I got August '22. Yes it's taken me this long to even start it. Only have the neck armour plates and the legs left to mask.
this is exactly as stressful as I was expecting it to be, and then someI've already fucked it up in some spots, I'm hoping I can go to the hobby store tomorrow and get something close enough to the blue that I can touch up spots with, and then I'll have to spray the top number box white so the stripe doesn't show through
>>11618541You're good bro, just go ham with the clear coat and polishing. Any touch up will disappear and it'll look great. If the number box hasn't been melted down yet you would be better off cutting the decal under it imo.
>>11617562>Brings up not caring about Europe. >Somehow that makes him care about Europe.I don’t like green peppers on pizza. You obviously LOVE green peppers on pizza. Do you hear what you sound like?

>>11618736it's not really offline, rather it's confined to tiny private boomer facebook groups or instagram/tiktok channels
>>11618777also unironically a "thing, japan" moment because it's much easier to find an online scale modeling community there since they still value anonymity
>>11618719>look how much I don't care about something because I constantly talk about ittake your own advice
>>11618782half my twitter is japanese scale modellers because they're seemingly the only ones who actually have a presence. Even if there's only 3 likes on a really good model.
>installed anti-gooning measures on my normal desktop>blocks all of 4chinI guess it's for the best, since now I can only post from my workbench computer, so if I aint building I aint shitposting. Anyway, did some research and turns out doing an entire Bp.42 armored train would be like $700 with some thrifty ebay shopping and like 9ft long. Sounds like a lot, but it's still larger cheaper and cooler than that gay ass lego deathstar. Very tempting.
this is genuinely embarrasing I'm hesitant to even post it. I somehow absolutely do not know how to work with decals and even 20+ models later I still haven't figured it out.at this point the only thing I can hope to do before I throw this kit in the trash is to sand it smooth and hope I can find or mix a color close enough to paint on
>>11619232Were you rubbing it after using a decal solution or something?
>>11618726>fat retard is also illiterate, and most likely ESLLike pottery
>>11619232if it's not torn can you not salvage it
>>11619239I brush on the setting solution, it wrinkles up, I let it air dry, then brush on some more and use a cotton swab also wet with setting solution to gently press it down into the panel lines and details (on planes) and it usually works out decently enough. the other side looks fine and not too many wrinkles, I dont know what went wrong on this side>>11619255I'm clearly too stupid to put it on even when the decal isn't super fragile and soaked in setting solution, so theres no way I'm capable of salvaging itI still have the back half to do and I can't wait to screw that up too
>>11619296If you're at the point where you think its totally fucked, you might as well try and salvage it. Maybe you'll learn something trying. The film in the wheel well still looks like it is in decent shape. I would try taking a soft paintbrush soaked in water and start teasing up edges. If you can start working water underneath you may still have a chance to smooth things out.
>>11619368I already took the nuclear option and cut off the badly wrinkled parts that I couldn't save and painted on the blue instead. Its not a great match and now with the back decals on I need to blend it in more. Thankfully I was planning on making it dirty, because its a rally car, so I'm hoping once I start the weathering process it won't be so blatantly obviousthe back decals went on pretty smoothly, I just brushed on the solvaset and walked away. I think thats probably what I should have been doing this entire time
Bought a meme Gaahleri airbrush recently. And fuck me, its actually great. All the airbrush you'd ever need and I'm not going back to non-drop in nozzles either. Why on earth did we ever put up with them.
>>11615573Yes, but they are a distributor not a retailer. And not it seems a very good one because I've never seen a MaK kit in a shop.Apparently they supply this outfit:https://alshobbies.co.uk
well despite everything I think it could have turned out a lot worse. we'll just pretend the other side didn't go horribly wrong.going to let everything settle for the night before I clear coat everything start the weathering process
>>11619672also fucked up the back decals, they're too low but whatever, could still be worsehopefully the painted section won't be so obvious when its dirty
>>11619672is the emblem on the grille a decal or a stencil?
>>11619506Yeah I found listings for the zimi stuff on other websites after finding that one so I doubt there will be a problem getting the kits by the time release date comes around. I would very much like the 1/35 littlebird. Did a little more masking yesterday too. Might try and get the legs done on tuesday when I dont have work.
>>11605592I just built the AMK Tomcat, and it's a bitch. Everything fits pretty well, but everything's 5 parts when it could be 2.

Is there a buying guide for airbrush compressors? I need one for the occasional model making, but could also use one in general for working on my car, but I seem to read that the compressors for airbrushes should all be small, silenced, and purpose built? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I know I'm looking to be spoonfed here.

>>11620330The scuffs on the skidplate look very nice.
>>11620544thanks. I wanted to do something more with it, and I originally had made it rusty on all the scuffs before I realized it most definitely would have been aluminium on the actual car so I wiped it all off. The white is actually just the bare plastic, but I guess you could kind of say its some flavor of oxidation. The only thing I'm not super happy with, looking at it now are the antennas. Whatever the kit included for them I seemed to have lost so the best thing I had were some wires. I should have stripped the sheathing off of them, they're quite thick
>>11620315Nice job! you recovered on the decals well. Todays time at the desk for me was painting the railgun coils the same colour they already were. Bravo me. But desu they do look nicer painted, they have a slight colour variation compared to the unpainted plastic.
next up on the benchjust ordered some aftermarket parts, it came with true details resin wheels, but I got some Kelik 3d decals for the rather empty cockpit, and a quickboost propeller hub with blades. This kit originally comes with RUBBER tires and they melted the plastic on some of the parts, including the propeller blades on some of the bulkhead pieces. Thankfully the bulkhead pieces are only ruined on the sides that won't be visible once assembled, but the blades are too far gone
Are pigments considered obsolete and boomercore in the current meta? I keep seeing everywhere that pigments=bad acrylic pre-dusting/enamels=good. Also pigments always seem to be on sale here, so I guess they're shelf-warmers. But I can't figure out getting good results with them, I tried copying NightShift's method and it looks like ass. Any reason to keep trying and not just stick to pigments forever?
>>11620199I did (albeit fucked a number of things). It was the last Ace Combat build I attempted without using my airbrushed decal/insignias. Also saw the Ace Combat show posts and the PS2 F-4 diorama goes so fucking hard
>>11620924>>11620199You can tell I hand-cut the EASA logo and the roundels are way too small (they come from a Kotobukiya X-02 kit) but unlike the posted model I tried building the stupid camera device. >>11620930The Zvezda kit was absolutely fantastic though so I should probably try this again. Their Flankers are just so good
>>11620924The only thing stopping me is the decals desu. I have no idea where to get them or how to DIY them.
>>11620940I have seen some Ace Combat decal sets on ebay and aliexpress but never bothered with them. I do all mine with airbrush and paint, even the squadron insignias. Designed vinyl masking to cut out with a stinky crafty mom vinyl cutter (Cricut) which is good enough for this stuff
>>11620199I'd love to do this and I have the means to do the insignia and numbers with my cameo. Only issue is the sol squadron emblem. Chink prints are of piss poor quality, and cameo has its limits.
>>11620932Would you say it's better than the GWH one?
>>11621546Zvezda SU-30SM is the only one in 1/72 scale and its not a very good kit. Really shows the draw back no slide molding especially on the canopy where there's a fucking gate mark on the glass it self since zvezda can't into undergating. Its for those reasons that I highly doubt the 1/48 kit will be any better than the GWH. Unless by some miracle zvezda stops being cheapskates and actually invest in machines that can take in more than one mold and support undergating. God I hope GWH some day goes back to russian aviation in 1/72 scale as according to their spokes person russian aircraft don't sell very well.

the poor man builds poor mans kitssuch as this tamiya panthersince the rubber tracks look too poor even for me, i scratched sideskirts from polysheet to cover the rubber tumors.its not finished yet, more paint to come and the panther is not done painting either but now i need to make like 20 tiny rectangular bits which shall impose the side skirts hooks.any ideas how to do this easy? my way was a thin stripe of ploly cut in pieces but man, not two pieces look the same and they bend and bow when cutting with an exacto.

>>11622313In my experience the source matters. Cheap chink airbrush from Ali/temu is a gamble but from a hobby shop where it is maybe a teeny tiny bit more expensive they've always been solid for me
>>11622346What you need is one of those specialized chopping boards, like a NorthWestShortLine Chopper, which is basically a miniature guillotine that allows you to make measured cuts for mass producing small custom-cut pieces. Also, using my Tamiya Panther Ausf. A for reference which used an Eduard PE kit for the schurzen, you'll want to remember the holes the panels fit onto are larger than the mounting ledges so they can actually slide on. You'll probably be best off just using black flat paint if you don't want to cut these out yourself.
Finally fucking finished masking
>>11622563Praying for it not to peel your paint anon.
>>11622567I haven't had any paint lift on the grey at all. Only when I've had to mask back over the green to do a touch up. it's like the adhesive leaves an imprint into the paint despite it being detacked and the paint dry.
>>11622406for its age its not too bad, just lacking in interior detail. the fit is decent though theres a couple spots where the edges are curled in a bit so its gonna need a good amount of putty work when I fit the halves togetherits miles better than airfix's 1/72 catalina thats for sure
I think after the summer hiatus it's finally time to get building again. I'm looking for some more interesting Mitsubishi Zero schemes than the typical beige, white or green, but not really having any luck finding any that aren't simply "chip the fuck out of it" or faded paint from sun bleaching. Were there really no significant interesting schemes on it? The beige is probably gonna be the way to go if not but just curious if anyone knows any. spruced up the academy catalina with some 3d decals from Kelik. first time using them, I messed up the side panels not knowing the best way to affix them, since they have no adhesive by themselves but I kinda figured it out by the end. the stock cockpit is completely empty besides the bare seats, a bar with some yokes, and the flat piece with a decal for the instrument panel, so this is a much welcomed improvement.I also later painted the wheels because the chipping looked a little ridiculous
Were these ever actually deployed? Or did they just sit with some rear echelon or reserve unit for the entirety of their service life?
>>11623545That's a very cool scheme, that would work well actually. I think I'll do that - thanks!
>>11623864Thanks for not outlining HOW you figured them out in the end. This will be super useful for everyone else that might benefit from this knowledge. :^)
>>11624064yeah turns out you just need to glue them onhope this helps
>>11624067What were the previous ways you tried to affix them before deciding on adhesive after you understood there was no such thing on the "decals" themselves?
>>11624085I started out with CA glue but it had started crusting up with that white residue so I switched over to the clear PVA glue for attaching canopies and stuff. It takes forever to dry, and the "decals" want to curl, so you have to clamp them down while the glue sets
>>11624106Are they not plastic? Curling isn't what I would have ever thought of as an issue there. Interesting. My first choice would have probably also been some sort of canopy PVA or acrylic glue.
>>11624115they are plastic, and I dont know how they're made but I feel like I read somewhere they might be 3d printed
>>11623884the AI translated hebrew article on the 'tiran(tank)' says they saw action both in the six day war and yom kippur with the t-54 specifically designated tiran 4 and the t-55 designated the tiran 5, both sourced from captured egyptian and syrian tanks. additionally it says most were sold to other contries once newer tanks started arriving so they likely saw action elsewhere
>>11624124apparently some of them were also repurposed into 'achzarit' apcs which meng sells as a kit
>>11624124Uruguay bought them apparently. It's just interesting how obscure the service history of this tank is in MMXXV. Are acrylic polyurethane primers(I know theye are shit but I'm stuck with them) like Vallejo or Ammo One Shot have "best use before" date? First time I used them they went trought airbrush smooth and silky. Haven't used them in like a half a year and now every time I use them they get chunky and clog my airbrush like crazy. Dosen't matter if I dilute them with dedicated thinner or water or nothing. Happened both with Vallejo light grey and AK grey. For some reason black went well.
>>11625810nta but I had no idea something like this existed, thank you for the tip :)
>>11625818acrylics just kinda go bad over time, iirc it's worse for primers. why are you stuck with acrylics? have you tried mr. hobby?
>>11625818>I know theye are shitThey are perfectly fine what the fuck are you on about? They get chunky when you thin them with I think anything alcohol based, it will make it all rubbery and shit. As long as you flush your airbrush with water first, they should be fine. There's a possibility some of that shit has activated and is in the paint, on that case you can try sieving it into a new bottle.
>>11625821Space issue. Mr.Surfacer is GOAT even from the can but smell is kinda bad and I don't have a seperate room for hobby.
>>11625818>>11625893Are you one of these retards that think you don't need to thin bottles just because it says they come pre-thinned? There's multiple things: Make sure you actually re-mix the bottles properly before each time you use them, otherwise they'll separate and you'll get weird behaviour. Secondly, don't just pour and spray, thin appropriately. The amount of thinner grows with age of the paint because I would guess the thinning medium inside the bottle evaporates slowly. I use bottles of this stuff from pre-covid and it's working just fine if you actually treat them right.

>>11626680When they made this kit in 1979 all they had for reference was some blurry black and white photos. The major problems are these: >the turret front has a reverse-curving "shot-trap" design, which didn't exist on the real vehicle (this is the most serious fault of the kit) >hull and main gun are oversized (perhaps they're more like 1:32). This is a problem if you like displaying models side-by-side, to compare them, like with other slavshit, like T-55's or T-72's >engine deck is flat, while the real one has a 3° slope towards the back (only rivet-counters know this) >general lack of molded small parts, since this is a 1979 kit Again, the worst part is the turret front. Compare the pic of the real one to the one in the Tamiya box. For me it's a dealbreaker from building it again, since it will look as if it's some Object-something closely related to the T-62, rather than an actual T-62.
>>11626770Man, these Libyan T-72's are fascinating. They're super early stereo-rangefinder Urals, Gaddafi was probably one of the first buyers. I remember before 2011 I wanted to make one, but information was so scarce, with only a handful of lowres photos being available that were released by state news-agencies (pic is all we had), and also there was no styrene early T-72 back then, so I had to give up. Then in 2011 suddenly the internet was flooded with high-res photos and video of these bad boys rolling through combat. Then the same for Syrian T-72's. Then nowadays the same for Ukrainian T-64's and Russian/Ukrainian T-80's.
>>11627701that's interesting. i'm a newfag to the hobby so i assumed you guys got your exact details from the spergs in those armies the same way the other spergs at the war thunder forums leak top secret military specson that note, there is a youtube channel called @Shawshank. owned by an ukrainian tanker who offers up untranslated tours of various captured russian tanks if you guys wanna check it out
>>11627860In scale modeling, "detail" means walking around a vehicle with a camera and taking photos at every angle. In a dictatorship this is the point where you get your shit kicked in and get sent to niggerhell (prison in a third world country) for treason and espionage, either for life or till it's you turn to be executed (five to ten business days). I'm from Hungary, and before 1989 the saying went that you know you've found a military base from all the "photography is forbidden" signs. Just taking out a camera at the outer wall would get you vanned, taking a camera into a military based would get you FUCKED.
Just bought this bish online. I've never made one of these kits before, but I'm going to make this into my madmax dream ride.I actually wanted a tempest or lemans for the regular exposed headlights and chrome bumper, but this kit was more accessible.I'll try and makes thesehttps://www.scaleproduction.de/product_info.php?language=en&info=p2626_headlights-1mm-5mm--10pcs--.htmlworkas for the chrome bumper, does chrome paint exist or like, do I have to get it dipped or something.
>>11628223I was thinking something like this, minus the spoiler, bit more rake, some bullet holes, rust, etc.I like the more raw look of the headlights on these base models pontiacs.
>>11628223yes chrome paint exists. I personally use a chrome pen refill dropper bottle and just put it in my airbrush, but some guys in my local club and also discord people that do mostly brush painting have used this stuff and have high praises. you just brush it on and let it dry for at least a day and it supposedly levels out to be nice and smoothbest of luck on your build anon I hope you stick with it because cars are a lot of fun
>>11628235That stuff looks perfect. I still need to buy paint and stuff so I'll add that to the list
Pinwash time
My local hobby shop is having a massive Mr. Hobby paints sale, €1 a pop Which one is the closest to modern Russian green?
>>11629530Just eyeball it dude. The nigors in zigger motorpool sure do. For 1 dollar a pop you can get all the greens and mix and match.
>>11629530NATO Green. HATO GRIN.
I forgot to post this when I finished on SundayAcademy's 1/72 PBY-5a Black CatIts an ok kit, mold quality wasn't great in some spots despite having a release from when it was still relatively new (1994 Academy/Minicraft). The molded rivets were nice. Admittedly towards the end putting on all the antenna and small fiddly parts I kinda rushed a bit
>>11629556The nose turret and cockpit got a little fucked up because when I found I STILL needed more nose weight, I ended up just drilling a hole in the top of the part where the wings go on and dropping more fishing weights into it. I tried to dump some PVA glue in it to keep them in place, then left it facing nose down to get them all to stay there but the glue just ended up flowing through and out of the hole in the turret lol. Maybe it'll dry clear eventually, but at least its kinda hard to see inside anyways.
>>11629557I used Quickboost propellers, Kelik 3d details for the cockpit, and it had True Details resin wheels in the box when I bought it. Definitely recommended to put some much needed detail back into this kit
>>11629556What did you use for the chemtrail dust marks and how long have you been in the illuminati?
>>11629530Can't decide between H303 and H309. Whatever your shading/weathering method is I guess.
>>11629648I'm not at liberty(its just super thinned light grey)
>>11629557Looks great! Got anything planned next?
>>11629736I always pick something to start immediately after finishing one
>>11629747Nice! I bought the fujimi pepsi bike a couple weeks ago
>>11629530>C511 Russian Green "4BO"Despite the name, it's a match for post-WW2 soviet armor until mid-80s.
>>11629798
>>11605032How long does it take you to assemble the parts?
>>11629556>>11629557>>11629561Sweet build, really nice
>>11629653>>11629798>>11629799Thanks, but looks like the boomers beat me to the paint, they have none of these colors Back to mixing it is
>>11629916Not that long? From starting to final plastic assembly before painting was 10 days. Only a few hours each session and not even every day. I think they're actually releasing the metal gear rex again next year. https://www.kotobukiya.co.jp/en/product/detail/p4934054060009/
Traded these for a $20. Only the instructions are missing, which is trivial to find as a .pdf. But since the guy also bought a NATO strap from me, it was more like eight bucks and a free watch strap.
>>11630238Sorry for your loss, man
>>11630331They're not Trumpeter, anon. These have the potential to be fun.
>>11630345it's 70s Tamiya. I wouldn't take them for free
>>11630462>>11630462>>11630462Fresh bread
>>11630382Peak consoomer.
>>11630145I see. Price is not too bad, almost $70 USD
