It is hard to understate just how fucking much that one single IP was doing for Hasbro as a whole. And while, yeah, it's still making a LOT of money, Wizards of the Coast reached the point where they ran out of consumer goodwill a couple years ago (Deliberately, by choice mind you) and have mostly just been coasting by whoring out the game to whatever IP wants to pay them the most. Or in the case of Marvel, Making a hilariously one-sided deal several years ago where they legally aren't allowed to use Marvel IP in Magic's digital client but still promising multiple sets based off a dying IP.
OP is an actual retard. Every issue today with Hasbro being an IP company was part of Brian's vision, then you go backwards and Brian was brought in because they wasted money on WotC thinking it bought them the Pokemon TCG. Going back further, Alan Hassenfeld had to bail them out, saving them from Mattel, in the early 90s because they fucked up across the board in the mid 80s and bought competitors with minimal ROI.Hasbro hasn't had a major success of their own creation since the 80s and has succeeded past that Inspite of themselves.
