Was this a good idea for a toy?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ERuhks3GNk
>>
>>11635624
It was a great idea, but the mech design itself wasn’t great. It’s exactly what you could have if you have a big Godzilla, you can say the city has a mech disguised as a big tacky skyscraper that transforms to fight him.
>>
>>11635624
It looked cheap even by 1980s standards.
>>
>>11635624
Clearly not, but it doesn't matter what they come up with Americans can't make anything and Need Asians to do all the work and make the toy while fat cats in suits talk retarded shit like they always do.
>>
>>11635624
No. A regular building alternate mode is boring and does nothing. If it was a base for other figures it would have made sense. The concept sucked.

Yes I agree however Fortress Maximus blocks your path.
>>
>>11635666
None of his modes is a rectangular gray office building, he turns into a military base brimming with guns, or into a spaceship, both infinitely more cool than the stock exchange building or whatever.
>>
>>11635666
What part of Fortress Maximus is a regular building? He's also a base for other figures. Reading comprehension anon.
>>
>>11635666
That fortress maximus toy sucked hard too, I own the original G1reissue and is way more fun with better alt modes and functions.
>>
>>11635670
>That fortress maximus toy sucked hard too,
Proving that a toy corporation actually tried this idea IRL.
>>
>>11635673
Again, it's not a boring regular building so Fortress Maximus is a terrible example. The problems of that figure have nothing to do with a concept that worked perfectly on the original 86 toy, they just messed up its execution because they just remolded an already bad Metroplex toy.
>>
>>11635667
>>11635666
The transformation is pure shit. Move arms and legs one way, and call it a base/city. Move arms and legs the other way, and call it a spaceship. Attach head to make it a robot. There was zero effort made in how it transformed or what it would look like in alt modes. The only cool thing about it was the massive size. Kids hadn't gotten a 2-foot-tall robot since 1978's Shogun Warriors.
>>
>>11635682
The original fort max looked great as a base.
>>
>>11635624
I think it's Dekaranger/SPD where their base turns into a giant robot, that's cool because it's more than just a building and there's a big flashy sequence of people getting into safe zones and the base eventually standing up. So the idea is sound, it just needs a bit of spit shine and effort.
>>
>>11635692
A base with weapon is actually playable and a completely different concept from a regular boring building, as people already said in this thread.
>>
>>11635624

Like did Americans really give a shit?
I remember people online and also presumably american laughing about "planes into towers" jokes all the time especially online.

~5 years after 9/11 I pointed to my friend
>Look this graph looks like the twin towers
And he made plane noises and flew a pencil into them.
We laughed.

Those are cool but Muteki Shogun/Shogun Megazord already did the Japanese castle motif but with individual ninja-inspired robot modes so it's better in my book.
>>
>>11635624
Big huge fortress with lasers and missiles with little spots for the regular figures to sit in and use like a home base kind of deal, absolutely.

Boring ol' big rectangle skyscraper with nothing special going on, not at all. It's boring and bland. It needs to be something bigger and better than a normal regular thing. Or at least partially transform into one like a flying aircraft carrier kind of thing.

>>11635769
Weren't these guys very quickly replaced by the more normal animal themed zords though?

It depends, in the original sentai this is the first robot and appears before Kakure Daishogun, in Power Rangers it's the second after the Ninja Megazord.
>>
>>11635842
>>It COULD have been Metroplex or Trypticon!
Those aren't all that big though. Fortress Maximus was the real humongous toys of G1.
>>
I always wanted that to be real, less for the robot part and more to use the building as a background/environment piece to play with. There's not many regular building playsets out there, that's what I always wanted as a kid, just a normal building for Spider-Man to swing on or something.

Actually, having rewatched Kakuranger recently, it takes a VERY long time for the Ninja Zords to get introduced. Like roughly the last fourth of the series. The Shogun Zords are the main mechs for the majority of the show.

The titan class was only recently introduced with Metroplex, and despite the fact that Metroplex was fairly well received by fans and sold well, the bean counters weren't convinced yet, and this was also around the time that mainline transformers were being hit with some heavy cost cutting, so Fort Max was just made as Metroplex remold which really just did not work (still did well enough to justify keeping the size class around though).

Damn shame too considering every titan after that was a unique mold and the scale ended up being pretty successful in the long run. Fort Max needs a completely original do over but that's not gonna happen for years and years with the way Hasbro works.
>>
>>11645208
>Fort Max needs a completely original do over
True, but even if him needs it the most, Metroplex should be redone too. That was OK for the first try at a Titan but I always hated the chest ramp that doesn't reach the ground, the hands that can't be hidden in alt mode and the lack of the city skyline that the G1 toy recreated so well. More stability and ankle tilts are also needed.
Make both on par with the best Titans released after them.

>>
>>11646327
That's true, but some still found it to be cool-looking just the same. And the movie studio wasn't gonna spend a fortune producing a complex transformer for something that only had a minute of screentime.
>>
>>11646348
They probably simply tore up one of the cool vintage ones and glued its parts to a model kit.
>>
>>11646348

The point was to make the toy look like shit, and they nailed it.

Nothing against 50s robots though, they're cute. But 80s robots were supposed to be cool.

Also a funny story is that during the development of Trypticon, the main toy designer allegedly assembled a bunch of Metroplex/Fortmax parts into a vague dinosaur shape during a meeting to prove that they could produce him with the current titan class budget, and when that story got out everyone assumed that meant Trypticon was going to somehow be another fucking Metroplex remold.
