How do you feel about buying toys of stuff from movies you haven't seen, games you haven't played, etc? Not just like, I collect Marvel Legends and I haven't read any of the comics featuring this character but she looks cool so I'm adding her to my collection. I'm talking full on, this is from a property you know nothing about, if anyone asks you anything based on the assumption that you must be familiar with the source material you'll just have to shrug.Like, I like this vaguely evil looking chick. Never played Final Fantasy 16, have no plans to, have no idea who she is or what her deal is. But cool toy, kinda want it.
>>11657126I never really do that personally, but don't see anything wrong with it. Seeking the source material would help you better understand the characters more
>>11657126This is the true soul of toy collecting. You see all these threads about wishing a movie they saw has toys, or how they bought a whole collection because they love the series, followed by some rare moment a guy burning out on collecting because his closet is full. Buying only what you like means that you actually connect to it on a more personal level, instead of just chasing a trend/high that will die pretty quickly.
>>11657126Waste of money.
>>11657126Nothing wrong with it, I have lots of Gunpla and I've never watched a single piece of Gundam media, never will, but the robots look cool, so I have them, never played Halo but I have Master Chief and so on. Just buy whatever you consider cool, origins be damned.
Toys are cool because you can appreciate many things at surface level without feeling like a tool
>>11657411It sounds like there is something wrong with it, if you haven't watched the original Mobile Suit Gundam.Everyone should watch Mobile Suit Gundam
>>11657126I don't like doing that because I think it's better to be knowledgeable about the things you own and with toys, better to have a connection to them as >>11657386 said. Plus if you are open to buying anything, your collecting will just cost more money and space. However it has become harder for me lately. There are some Figmas I’ve been eyeing just because they look cute but I don't know the characters. I actually bought Figma Ruby without having seen Love Live Sunshine but then I watched it while she was in transit and luckily Ruby ended up being my favorite. I think if I were to get more unknown characters, I would eventually look into the media they are from.
>>11657126I don't do it generally. I'm already collecting enough lines from series/franchises I like to eat up all my space. I have had interesting figures encourage me to check out the source material, though. As far as OCs, I've only bought Snail Shell's Lustia so far, but I haven't opened her yet. Some of the others like their angel and ninja are tempting, too.
>>11657551I love the Pecorine figma. I didn't even watch the anime nor play what's left of the game til I bought it, but i do regret not being into Princess Connect earlier
>>11657126One of the Andor droids fits in well with some other robots for the franchise I already collect. And I also have og Diamond Select release of The Iron Giant and have picked up the ReActions and just recently because it was nearly half off, the new 7' from Super7. So I can see picking up a few more alien robots.
>>11657126I but action figures because it allow me to appreciate a design I like in different poses and different angle. So yes I buy things from shows I know much about as long I find the design appels to me in certain way and that figure isn't shit. For that figure OP mentioned, I wanted it at first as well but based on my previous experience with bring arts and watching review I ended up not buying it cause the quality isn't worth my time or money.
>>11657126Buy what you actually like. If you like it because it looks cool, then you have a reason to buy it. It's better than buying 100 boring bitches like Mon Mothman or Jocasta Mi that you bought just because you like Star Wars. That was my mistake. I should have just stuck to Cantina and Jabba's palace because I like the freaky aliens.
>>11657126I will not only buy figures from franchises I know nothing about, I have actually bought figures from franchises I actively *dislike*. I hate Overwatch and Fortnite as games, but I love some of their character designs and have figures from both lines. Fortnite especially had a LOT of good figures across four distinctly different toylines. I've also gotten Figma of characters from Fate and Shield Hero despite not caring about the former and actually hating the latter, because I felt they'd work well in my JRPG party. Even back as a kid/teen, I grabbed two different Art of War Guts figures because articulated fantasy figures were so rare and they both were really cool toys. At that point I didn't even know what Berserk was and couldn't even figure out the character's name since it was in half Japaneses. I'm a toy "collector" first and foremost, everything else is secondary. If the toy looks cool or the character looks interesting...and the price isn't too prohibitive...I'll certainly pick it up.
>>11657386>>11658902There's 2 types of collectors and a ton of overlap. The first is "character" collectors, who just want a representation of whatever MCU, tv show or anime they like. This is why funkos exist, some people just want their character in some form. The second are toy collectors, who buy toys based on the toy itself, rather than the franchise it's attached to. I assumed there was a ton of overlap between the 2, like I buy all Classified because I love Gi Joe, but also buy shit I don't know about and looks cool, and then some military toys of franchises I don't know because it could fit with Joes.
>>11657482It's Boring as fuck tho, some movies are good but thats itGunplas are really cool tho, wish they make other model kits with that quality and ease of build
>>11657482Gundam is like every mainstream anime. It's story progression or action scene for 3 minutes, and dialogue for the rest of the 17. Gundam isn't even about the robots, it's about the pilots who do nothing whether they're driving them or not. Also all gundams look the same, they're either Zaku or the humanoids with forehead gold crests
I think you’re getting hung up on the belief that people will judge you as a fake fan or an inauthentic person for having a toy from a thing you don’t know or care about. But just appreciating the aesthetics of a really good character design isn’t in any way shallow or inauthentic.I’m a big Star Wars action figure collector, which is due in part to the fact that I like the Lucas Star Wars movies, but it’s also a simple product of the fact that I really like the costumes and weapons used in the movies, too. I would probably collect Star Wars figures even if I wasn’t a huge Star Wars fan because the designs for things like the robots, Boba Fett, the stormtroopers, darth vader, etc., are capable of standing on their own as really good designs, and would be deserving of praise independent of the existence and quality of the Star Wars multimedia franchise.
>>11657126buying joytoy warhammer with only knowledge is just cool guy in armor killing all kind of aliens
For those who can only buy a toy if they know the franchise they're from. Can you never enjoy a toy for being a toy? Do you never buy something because it looks cool? There are tons of original figureas who aren't anchored to known IPs. Sure, I understand how being attached to an IP might give you enjoyement of the figures based on it, but what about the cool factor? Do you not think the Artificial Humans are cool? What about Maestro Union or Fury Toys for cool anthropomorphic animals? What about Moshow for mechas? So, for you it is Marvel (or whatever brand or series) or bust?
>>1165712695% of the figures are from things I'm familiar with. The only 5% are things my dick told me to buy.
>>11660673I don't think you've seen MSG if you're saying that about that one specifically
>>11657126generally no, it's not a terrible thing because I have done it because I like the character design and it sometimes get me into their media, but not doing it saves you a lot of money, but if you really like a design and have the money go for it.Benedikta is cool though, a real bitch (fun way) and her boss fights are fun.
I do it all the time. Why get hung up on the fact that I don't know anything about the subject matter as long as the design is cool? Granted I buy a lot of stuff that are just OC designs anyways.
>>11658984The thing about the original Gundam is that it's incredibly well written from a character perspective. All the characters have full internality, they react to things differently, they keep secrets, they have motivations they aren't consciously aware of. And the character growth is incredibly natural. Amuro famously starts the show as an awful smelly nerd and spends the first 15 episodes basically constantly scared, being bounced from traumatic event to traumatic event, never having any time to rest or try to sort things out. And by the end of the show he's this reliable, professional, amazingly talented soldier. And there is no moment where he's like, "I'm going to be an adult now!", there's no single turning point, his development is gradual and uneven but above all natural and realistic. And it's not just Amuro, the whole crew has similar arcs, each one different based on who each character is. At the start the whole White Base crew is a gaggle of civilian conscripts with a couple barely out of the academy soldiers trying to keep them alive, all of them in way over their heads. And then by the Battle of Solomon near the end, you see the entire ship running like clockwork, everyone knows their job and does it well, and every inch of that development is earned. That's what's really amazing about the show, you have seen these characters change and grow and earn every ounce of experience the hard way.Genuinely, the only other show I can think of that spends so much time on the character's internal motivations and development is Breaking Bad.So if you like that stuff, MSG is great, if you just want cool robot battles, check out 0083
>>11657126I have a couple of Jurassic World figures even though I have no desire to watch any of those movies (love the first two Jurassic Park movies though). I just think dinosaurs are cool. I also have some Star Wars figures of characters whose shows I'll never watch, I just thought they looked cool (though I do like pre-Disney Star Wars). In general, yeah, I would buy a character from something I knew nothing about just because I thought it looked cool.
>>11657126Not in this fuckin economy. But back in 2009 when I started collecting toys I did it all the time. It's also why I like toys without a franchise attached like Microman or now Diaclone and 30mm
>>11657126If you think it looks cool why not? Someone once told me that if you can't afford to buy something three times, you can't afford it once. So if you can afford it and you like it, buy it.
