Gen Xers thought Power rangers was a Voltron ripoff, but even with Power rangers currently dead, it still ran for 30 years and now way more generations see that as the main combining robot franchise.

No one wanted the pilots and once you do the lions you can't really do them again so Playmates was stuck reissuing the two lion Voltrons they did over and over again. Voltron is a really good license in that the lions always sell well, people can't get enough of the big guy, but there's no where to go from there. That was why Voltron Force did the center swap gimmick. The plan was to sell 5 Voltron action figures, multiple center lions for the combiner, different limb versions of Black Lion, AND the original toy pitch for the line had an orange lion so they likely planned to introduce more lions. Plus the show had a secondary combining mech. The toyline just didn't get off the ground but that's the way to go with a Voltron toyline.
