“About Damn Time” Edition

What’s on the workbench, /toy/?

Sculpts, castings, 3D prints, dioramas, mods, kitbashes, and repaint are all welcome!

Post WIPs, finished projects, ideas, techniques, ask for advice, and most of all, have fun!

HELPFUL TIPS:
-Invest in a rotary tool such as a dremel for sanding/sculpting, especially a flexible extension tip.
-Pin vises for drilling holes can be found at hobby stores like Hobby Lobby and are great for making peg holes.
-For soft, flexible parts get Sugru silicone putty and Oyumaru
-Hardware epoxy putties such as Waterweld, KwikWood, and PlasticWeld are similar to milliput, greenstuff, and apoxie, can be cheaper some times, and can be found at local hardware stores such as Lowes, Ace, and Home Depot.
-Bootleg figures make great custom-fodder, especially if the legit figures are pricey.
-Body-chan/kun, Figma Archetype He/She, Romankey x Cowl, and Sozai-chan/kun are great base bodies for import-style human characters.

I did post this WIP in the Thread about Toys already. Made the barrel articulation, it locks in 3 positions. Haven't done much since then, instead of focusing on the turret, next week I'm gonna print few parts of the main hull. Want to finally see how big it really is in comparison to figs. Tank is in 1/12 scale.

I was curious how 3D sculpting works, tried it for the first time, and damn, I need to replace my tablet. Buttons on the pen are not working so I could not rotate the camera in a more convinient way. So the process was pretty clunky, but I'm happy with the result, it's doable. Far in the future, I want to do my own collection of 1/24 - 1/18 scale Metal Slug action figures. YoloPark is doing something close to what I want to do, but I'm not a big fan of their sculpts.

Wanted to make a cartoony Judge Dredd. So combined these two. Think it gives it a bit more character

That looks so cool! Here's my attempt at something similar. I used the old Marvel legends and tried to put his parts onto a more buffer base body. Head is a 3d print. It's not as good as yours. Pretty much looks like a custom where yours looks like a genuine product and that's like the highest compliment one can have on a custom board. Do you mind telling us a bit more about it? What's the base body? How did you do those perfect looking badge and chain?

Still modeling the head, have to touch up the gold again and have to design decals for the designs on the jacket. Really like this shade of blue

In hindsight, yes. I was too preoccupied with him being too skinny in the original form and I guess I went overboard...
>>

Oh, okay. I thought that badge was molded on and not removable. I never handled that vintage Dredd figure, but it sure is a good source for parts! Also I didn't know this line from lanard but it's generally not a line I'm really familiar with. I thought it was one of those extreme era GI Joe's or maybe a Small Soldier figure.
>>
>>11717605
I never had no clue what that figure was either. Small Soldiers was the aesthetic I was looking for but at some point came across this one that fits the scale and look better for what I was going for

Initially I was going to look for something else and do a cloth coat, but I thought it would look bad unless it were tight on the figure which I worried would limit articulation. I bought a 2nd Aoshi to do Dante but that's going to be a lot more work, I'm 3d printing custom forearms for rolled up sleeves, a harness with holsters for E&I, and some miscellaneous belts and buckles for his legs and chest

I have far too many projects as is but I'm starting another one. Retro-style RT "beaky" Space Marine, roughly to scale with 1/18 (emphasis mine "roughly" as the idea is very much "what if Hasbro or whoever made 40K action figures around the time of Rogue Trader, so proportions and such will be funky on purpose). Should have similar articulation to a classic Joe, so not ultra poseable but not 5POA either.

>make great custom-fodder
I have a bunch of cheap auction wins (I mean like $4 per body cheap) for complete bodies, but they all have the same hair. A toy reviewer does head swaps when he finishes up the review, and he did some where he had removed and replaced the hair. I have the same figure 4x in one lot and 1-2 of those heads are fine but I'd like to swap hair on the other two, and I do have other heads. I have some He-Man head fodder for example and would swap some dark hair for his blond on the two heads.
Anyone want to point me to a good text or video about this? I assume it involves dropping the head in hot water but I want to know things like how long, how carefully and what tools to pry off the hair from the 'skull' - what kind of prep you need to do to the skull before you try to replace the hair, etc. etc.
Thanks!
>>
>>11719810
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but hitting it with a hairdryer’s hot air or boiling water should weaken the glue a enough to CAREFULLY break the glued parts free.
>>
>>11719132
Ah, pre-Exodus MtG. Really great job on that custom.
>>
>>11720277
I tried it with boiling water and nothing, I'm so mad at myself
>>
>>11720339
I say try acetone...Can melt the plastic and make it even worse. Never tried it for superglue tho so not entirely sure
>>
>>11720422
I will, if not I will just look for a replacement foot sigh
>>
>>11720277
>>11720339
You tried letting it sit in some water you boiled, AFTER you let the water cool down enough but not enough that you couldn't feel heat coming off it if you held your hand above the container it was in? And you didn't do something stupid like stick in the actual pan you boiled the water in, BTW?

Try a blow dryer. Borrow one if you have to. They usually have them at thrift stores but make sure you plug it in first so you don't take home even a cheap broken piece of plastic.

>>11720422
Acetone won't probably work on super glue, women glue fake nails on and they don't use super glue, if acetone took off glue, when they go to repaint or fix the paint job, the acetone could also take their nails off and I'm pretty sure they pay a fucking lot to get those put on.

Anon would need to use something stronger and would probably damage the foot.
>>
>>11720428
Do you happen to have a hobby shop that specializes in r/c stuff? You may be able to get r/c fuel with nitromethane in it, which works on dissolving cyanoacrylate glue. Not sure if it'll be cheaper than replacing the foot, but it's an option.
>>
>>11720530
Nope anon, unfortunately I don't
>>
>>11720692
find yourself a small mom and pop type hardware store in your town and go there and ask them on a slow afternoon - don't tell them it's a fucking toy, tell them you were trying to repair something, bring the tube of superglue.

They might not sell what you need to fix it but a good competent OLDER male employee will likely know what you can find to use. Tell them its something that has something value to your child or wife and you don't want to ruin the original for them.
>>
>>11717365
What resin do people use to print these
>>
>>11720885
I don’t use resin. I outsource my prints to a site that can do SLS nylon. That’s how I’m able to print shit with complex geometry without a clusterfuck of supports.
>>
>>11720850
I shall try
>>

Same anon who did the dredd custom...Working on stylizing my Mafex Spidey's body

-Updated forearms, godsent from a dofferent fig!
-Made the lats bigger
-don't know how tf I'll do the armpit wings but he needs em
-Needs bigger boots to match the hands
>>
>>11721158
The toybiz first appearance spidey had pit wings you could pilfer, although maybe you can find cobweb fabric online.
>>
>>11719810
What part is stuck, the toe joint or inside the ankle? The toe joint can be fixed using a mini flathead screwdriver (they sell sets at the dollar tree, eyeglass repair kits too) and a hairdryer, heating and prying inside the glued area like a tiny chisel.

>>11719910
This will sound like my first reply above but here too you can use a hairdryer set on high and a mint flathead screwdriver, or a wooden spudgle (like a cuticle pusher) to pry the glue loose. Most hair is held on using superglue and will crack off after wiggling and paying for a bit. Work from the back so you don't risk damaging the face.
Use a Dremel tool with an engraved bit (looked like a bladed round ball) to remove the positioning strips inside the new hairpiece and smooth the top of the head down as well.

>>11721158
That looks great!! Armpit wings are easy, head to hobby lobby, Michaels, or Jo-Anns Fabrics and check their fabric costume section. Every one of them has a see-through lace spiderweb print where you can cut the inner web sections out to fit. If you can't find that you can always order a pair of Halloween spiderweb leggings and cut them up. To attach the fabric use a needle and thread, tying it around the inner shoulder joint, inside the lat joint, and finally near the elbow somewhere. You may need to drill a small hole and punch the head of a tiny push-pin in as an anchor against the ribcage and tie the string to that, then hammer it down flat. Delicate work
>>
>>11720985
Nope. Mine are all the same material. I dabble in a few other materials like SLS TPE and TPU now and again for things that need to have different properties to them like flexibility. Typically I use a food-grade safe SLS nylon that is polished through a tumbler. The details it’s able to capture for 1/12 scale figures is pretty crisp, almost as good as some resins but with some give to it.

>>
>>11721258
>What part is stuck, the toe joint or inside the ankle?
Both, my retarded ass tried to stiffen the joint rotation but instead it became rock hard, neither of them move now.
>>
>>11717365
The arms need to be bigger around and the knees need to have a smoother transition between the thighs and calves, it looks like a balloon animal.
>>
>>11721352
This is a commission, the client’s OC is just proportioned that way. Also of note is that the final form of the commission will NOT be nude, just scantily-clad in sculpted NON-CASTOFF armor and clothing. I have however been given permission by the client to use a blank-head version if the nude model to sell on Cults3D. I plan to put it up after test-printing it from Sculpteo in SLS, but it’s going to be a bit costly to do so, which is why I’m waiting for my finances to recover from some major non-toy expenditures recently.
>>
>>11721326
So you want permant hard wings, or something flexible? For hard wings go snag some clear UV resin and slightly wrinkle a plastic baggie. Using a thin nozzle 'draw' the wings on the baggie then cure it with an led nail lamp. Use a fine tip white or black paint pen and draw in the webbing. Or etch it using a Tamiya plastic scriber.

You can heat up clamshell packaging and draw the lines on it. Or you could just get some clear vinyl couch cover material so it's flexible. Garlic cloves come in white plastic netting if you wanna go that route.

>>11721331
Alright, the ball joint looks to be made of that polypropylene "unpaintable" plastic which resists super glue so there's still hope. Heat that sucker up with a hairdryer and start prying around the joints and working the plastic.if you absolutely can't fix it send it my way and I'll take a crack at it.
>>
>>11721787
Aight I'll try
>>
How do you draw eyes and other tiny details on a blank? Is there some kind of special pen or pencil I can use? Paint just feels more difficult to use
>>
>>11722069
No need to go that route, anon. Waterside decals are all you need. Unless you’re doing very small eyes like one a realistic-type face or a 1/18th scale.
>>
>>11722512
Where do you get photos of eyes to print onto the water slide decal paper
>>
>>11723326
If it’s custom water slides you’re going for, you can buy online ‘blank’ water slide paper and print off your own home computer printer, then simply use a hobby knife to carefully cut out the decal to remove the excess white of the paper. If you get the transparent water slide paper instead you’ll need to make a painted-on splotch of white model paint for the sclera to be underneath the decal, since white-ink is not something regular ink printers do other than one singular model that is expensive as shit.

There are several. I bought a used West Coast Avenger Vision that I plan to take the head and bare feet off for a custom. He's not as white as you want and has, for example, what's probably supposed to be briefs or a trunk on, that looks more dirty white than the do gray but I was planning on making it all the same shade of white.

You could paint a GMAN or similar?
>>
>>11723725
Yeah, I did see that Vision, but he's too muscular for my purposes. I'm looking for skinny.
>>
>>11723725
Oh wait, I see the Vision you mean. That might work. I should scroll through Marvel Legends again and make sure I didn't miss anything.
>>
>>11723745
There are also some Black Panther soldiers who are entirely white, and it's a nice bright white - but those are the same buck as the regular BP, and if you don't want muscular, that might not suit you.
You also need to swap out the feet and the head.

You're probably going to have to paint the eyes if the head you're using has eyes molded into the figure. If the head has smooth eyes like most anime figures and you don't have a color printer you can get generic eye decals off aliexpress, they're almost entirely in boring or cutesy anime styles though

Can you harvest heads easily from Bandai Banpresto figures like PICREL? I found a link in the archive to a YouTube video but the guy either deleted his account or the video was taken down.

Wanted to see how much production it involved and what would be best to use besides hacking at the necks and ruining perfectly good x-actor blades?

Figured a box cutter might work but would also ruin that blade?
>>

>>
>>11718634
Might work, if you whip out the ol' X-Acto knife.
>>
>>11724665
Microwave a bowl of water until it's really hot, but not damaging to yourself, usually like 1 minute. Dip the figure you're going to cut into a few seconds.
Some are saying use dremel drills, but they're usually too thick, if you're just wanting a surgical separation of 2 halves... and if you do use a dremel, you also have to wear goggles. I've had ceramic cutting discs SHATTER, with the shards lodging into the wall in front of me, and thankfully not in the direction of my unprotected eye.
>>
>>11724665
Get a soldering knife. They’re like $20 at craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s. Should cut right through, but make sure to wear a mask and have good ventilation. The fumes when the blade melts the plastic aren’t anything you should be breathing.

Vision came with his head, I just am using him with a different head for my custom. You can also ask at the Marvel General but I find them very useless with questions.

>>11724239
how did you dye plastic?
>>
>>11724665
Heat the neck up with a hair dryer, use a #2 xacto knife to remove the head and trim the neck closer to the chin. Use a Dremel tool with a round bladed engraved bit to hollow out under the neck and crate the hole where wrhw ball joint (or revo peg end) goes into.

>>11725979
Rit DyeMore will dye all unpaintable hard plastic/polypropylene, some abs plastic (becl careful of warping) and soft PVC plastics usually resist it. It's best to paint PVC and abs plastic. The only thing I'd use dye for is the hips/shoulder/elbow joints of transformers, tmnt weapons, and revoltech joints. Paint everything else.

Oh, that one looks promising. Seems like it's a bit cheaper than the similar movie Black Widow too.

I'm also considering just painting a Hobby Base Sozai-kun and swapping out its joints with their white joints. Might be the most straightforward solution even though it needs some painting.
>>
>>11727310
You can find her body on cheap if you can be patient and just take the legs. Hasbro has reused it and it's only the the Black Widow that's overpriced. And that all is heads. Like people overpaying for the same shitty Everett Ross body with different paint that stores are still trying to give away, just because it's now fucking Daredevil.

If you're patient, you get this shit for cheap. I've been thinking of this custom for two years and now still need a white head to put in his hands like a condom helmet. It surprises me how hard it is to find anything light colored in 1/12 size that is just a helmet.

No eyes.
No nose.
No mouth.
>>
>>11727758
I did already buy the Sozai-kun for a custom I went a different direction with, so I guess cost-wise free is better than any alternative lmao.

What's your custom gonna be?
>>
Bought a lot of heads that showed up all just tossed into one large, clearly well used gallon Ziploc. Didn't travel far and most were fine.

But have problems from conditions likely before they got tossed together in a bag.
>>
>>11729155
I got two of these Cap heads but one was clearly glued and then cut off that custom/kitbash when the Seller changed his mind.

I assume I could try soaking him in hot water and hope I can pry it out but there has to be better suggestions like the guy who was trying to fix his foot joint super glue problem, but I don't recognize the silver gray adhesive Seller used?
>>
Same kinda silver gray adhesive problem, when he swapped the hair on the Joe Classified head.

I'd like to clear it off the hair, even if I had to repair and repaint the entire head. Black hair should be a no-brainer even for a noob like me, no? And I'd like to clean up the hairline mess and probably have this hair sit better on his head. I also have extra heads I could harvest for hair.

Or is this more of a loss I should dump on a more experienced buyer for dirt cheap?

The heads work out to about $2 each and some were worth more to me than that so I would have no problem tossing this in a fodder lot to dump at $0 value.
>>
Last but not least, can the left head have the forehead fixed without replacing all the flesh tone.

That, am confident, is beyond my current or immediately future skills.
>>
This week I finally started working on customs again, and I decided I wanted to make more progress on John Matrix after a like 2 year hiatus. He's being made with parts from Gung Ho and Bazooka, and his vest in particular is a very heavily modified Gung Ho vest (modern version). Part of what took so long was me not being fully confident that I could freehand sculpt the big ammo pouches out of putty but I finally took the plunge and I survived, and now it's all painted up. Not finished yet because I have to add the zipper and straps, but it's getting close.
>>
>>11729374
And since it's been so long, here's some old pics of where he was at last time when I stopped working on it. The next difficult parts are going to be painting his head and airbrushing on his war paint.

Moving this over to the official thread. I'm on my 3rd prototype to 3D Print Lady from Thomas and the Magic Railroad in OO Gauge, using a Smokey Joe chassis. So far, the full print as one piece came out good, but I'm going to edit the STL file to remove the extruded letters on the side in favor of custom Gold Foil Waterslide decals with her name, so I don't have to print them. Plan is to have her painted and ready to go in May to the Local Model Railroading club and have her run on their line.

Do we have third worlders over here?
I would really like to get into Customizing but I live in Brazil and everything is extremely expensive in here.
Anyone has any experience wiyh cheap bodies? I would like to start with 1/12 but wouldn't mind going smaller.
>>
>>11729374
The vest is almost done, the only step left is to add the harness straps. John's vest is hands down the most difficult part of the entire project and is practically a character in and of itself.
>>
>>11729941
You can customize anything you want. Several people took the Spin Master 6" (1/12) and the 12" bodies of Superman and made customs. This is one video I sat through and while he's only customizing the face, I think it would help you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SninCaiz4VA

I don't know if these Superman toys are as cheap in Brazil as they are here, but it's a thought. I would definitely find some bargain basement figures to practice on and play with. I suppose other people also probably have better, specific advice so maybe post again when you see another thread if you don't get many answers. Sometimes this thread seems very active and busy and other times it's fucking dead.
>>
>>11729967
Vest is done. I've got weapons to finish and more painting to do but now the hardest part of the work is out of the way, and it works so I'm happy.
>>
What's the best body for the easiest Nico Bellic custom? Not going to use any soft goods.

Marvel Legends Peter Parker with the jacket probably isn't bad but needs baggier pants
>>
>>11730091
The ML Loki from the second season (who has a tie on so you would need to deal with that) would work better. I just picked up some Indiana Jones Adventure Series bodies for the suited bodies and to not have an excess of Everett Ross in my display, and my issue with them is that the pants are saggy/baggy looking..
>>
>>11730128
Thank you I may look into those. Any idea for the head? Gotta be some white guy out there that looks like Niko lol

Smokey Joe arrived today so I can go ahead an take the body off and start properly measuring Lady to fit on it.

What's a good way to take the boots off say one Marvel Legends and put it on another. I bought a fodder lot with a Shied Agent solider mostly for the heads but got the seller to add the body for a reserved listing since it was damaged (the neck peg had been chopped off because seller glued a head on to get it to fit, instead of using blu tak or some such).

And it's the feet from a white vision I want to replace with the shoes, to make it look like boots, or do I need to replace the entire bottom, from the knee or 'essentially' boot cut piece?

And thanks in advance!
>>

easy, boil some water and let it sit there for a few minutes, you can then pull apart the softened parts, feet should be compatible between figures, no real need to use the calves unless you want them to match, the hot water trick works perfectly for most if not all ml figures , it softens the plastic and makes disassembly easier

It was listed as a sniper rifle from JS Armory on Etsy. Direct link isn't working right now because JS Armory is on a break (meaning you can't browse his catalogue until he gets back, this is common on Etsy while sellers fill orders). I removed the scope to make it look more like the Valmet in the movie and it turned out great, so keep an eye on his shop.

>>11731015
How do you find ordering from there? I want some beakers and test tubes and other crap for background with a bunch of lab coated mad scientists I am going to do for one display and never thought to look at Etsy until it came up when I was trying browser searching instead of the fucked up shit Amazon coughs up as results.

Last time I tried ordering from Etsy was tee shirts and they were shitty fabric and shitty screen prints where they didn't tape well enough so shit didn't bleed. I did silk screening in school for a fundraiser and some shirts for some mates in a band and did better work as a noob than two different people claiming to do it for a living.
>>
>>11731289
I have ordered a lot of stuff from Etsy for my customs, especially JS Armory and AnthanatosUnlimited. I can vouch well for both of them. Their quality is good and I've never had shipping issues from them.

>>11730946
Thank you!

I figured it was something simple since I see people do it all the time. That's great to know since I also need a white suit and might get this one knowing I can get the shoes off (and hopefully the loud bow tie).

Despite having tonnes of half-finished Blender files already I'm literally incapable of finishing projects before starting new ones, it seems. Started on a hitotsume/cyclops/monoeye head; still have to do quite a bit of shape tweaks but quite pleased thus far. I did the topology such that it's easy enough to adjust the eyelid and mouth for different "poses" before final sculpting and cutting so I can make some face options without having to dick around with rigging. It's a bit awkward to do at the moment, need to learn how to do shape keys.
Also, the eyeball will be moveable; I have an idea of how to mount it inside the head so it can hold a position but still be easy enough to move and it won't scrape off any paint apps.
As mentioned this is far from final and should look a hell of a lot better when the final details are made and refined, and she has some hair.

I can't answer you and would like to know myself. I have some torsos I would like to do this with.
But I did want to Chime in that the Owl will probably be peg warming and be discounted soon. I picked up the Avengers Infinity Cap that comes with the unmasked head, NIB, for $12 on-line which is worth it to me since I'm sure I can get someone to buy the NIB/Clamshell figure to at least clear $5 after any fees, and I wanted the unmasked head fodder.

I also see and grabbed some Retro carded MLs at Ross, for fodder and backgrounds in dios, and I'm sure this guy will be there before the summer's out if not during the holidays, if you can wait that long to save $10-$15. He probably will start discounting on sites sooner.

If his trenchcoat didn't look so gothic and he would fit in with modern suits, I would grab one myself. If he pinks clearances down to $2-$3.99 next January, I would definitely pick him up.

Good job of matching the flesh tones. Do you follow that multiple different versions of colors and water tricks that they show on line or is that all just one paint? And is that something you think can be done with poor ventilation? We're talking a work table about one foot away form a tiny side window and I would probably wait till the late spring so I can keep it open all day and night.

He really doesn't look that tall. I've carefully taken him out of the box because I still might return him. But I've seen him at Ross still, he's not as cheap as I paid ($5.99) because I realized someone stuck a Black Series sticker on the Banpresto box and he rang up as that.

But they still have plenty and others, under $25 if not under $20. I think BBTS had? has? him on slight clearance, though, from MSRP, or maybe it was the Bald Billionaire?

# # # # #

PICREL unrelated: picked up for $4 when I won a bunch of auctions from the same guy so every additional figure was only 50 cents per more in postage, since no one bid on her.

Her face looks a little bit too "I'm frightened" to use her for Mercy Graves - but maybe it will look better in hand? But I'll get SOME use out of the head and definitely the bottom half of the body. And there's a GI Joe female that will work perfectly.

Thanks.

As for my color matching method, I have some empty paint pots I bought at Hobby Lobby some years back and I mixed it up all as one color. I started with some Vallejo flesh tone then added white, pink and orange kept mixing, testing it on the neck peck and holding up up under my ott light until I got the color to blend convincingly. I ended up needing more orange than I expected but the end result was a good match.

Today I'm going to paint the camo on his desert eagle holster and hopefully I'll have some shoits of him with all his primary gear on. The main work after that is going to be attaching straps to his weapons. I'm also waiting on his M202 Flash from Gridiron. I bought a Japanese kit for one a while ago but even though it says 1/12 scale it was too small.
>>
Where can I get a legitimate Romankey male body? Not the big guy one. All the ones I keep seeing listed everywhere seem to be knockoffs.
>>
>>11733230
>I started with some Vallejo flesh tone
Thanks for the details, really helpful. People on-line give advice and it's always good to find OTHER people match it up and confirm it. Your path is pretty much what i have seen on some YT videos, and I suppose I will need to learn it, test it and observe it and learn on my own, and deal with my shitty ventilation circumstances in my unit. We have an upstair deck, with a BBQ pit, that no one really uses because the building won't allow people to drink in common areas (yep, some landlords are THAT stupid), so I may go up there and try to paint by free hand.

And sit around with music and books, sun screen and baseball caps while it dries.
>>
I'm trying to fix something and never customized before. Is there a kind of wire that's easy to cut and bend I can use it replace the pins on an old plastic figure.

Good news is that acrylic paints don't kick off any toxic fumes, although it's highly advised that you spray heads with primer or adhesion promoter before painting, and seal the finished paint job with flat acrylic varnish, both of which will require a dry and well ventilated area.
>>
>>11734313
The weather where I live is definitely dry, so doing that parts of it outside is probably going to be my go to and probably to set up an assembly line and do several heads at one time, since I can't really do this at my convenience and at my own time/leisure.

That's a smart move. Ideal painting conditions for sprays are warm, dry weather before pollon season, preferably with little to no wind so that you don't have to worry about debris in the air touching the paint (although you should bring things inside to cure once they're sprayed).
