So my D51 has 4 different number plate options, and I can't really decide which one to put on. Is there any method to this? Or is it literally just "choose the one you like"?Anyway I can choose between 352, 453, 611, 829, incase anybody feels strongly about one of them, or has a suggestion... I believe only 453 survives irl.
>>11718364People will often pick a plate based on if they are modelling a particular region like Hokkaido to have the train be accurate to what they are modelling. Otherwise yeah, pick one you like.Based on my Google Fu, 453 is preserved in a park in Chiba. https://maps.app.goo.gl/s9wxHwtN9zNx3RZ49?g_st=acAlso a couple of the driving wheels for 611 are preserved.I found a bit of history on a Wikimedia commons page with the photo of one of the wheels that I machine translated.>This car body was completed at Hitachi Kasado Plant on March 27, 1941. Its serial number is 1442 and its body number is 611. It was assigned to the Nagoya Bureau on April 9 and then stationed in Kofu District, after which it was transferred to Tsuruga, Fukui, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Niitsu, and Goryokaku Districts. It was scrapped and dismantled in Takikawa District, but its main and third driving wheels are preserved. The third driving wheel is on display in front of Sakamachi Station in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture. The image shows the main driving wheel, which is on display at the Koda Town Local History Museum in Shimizu, Fukamizō, Koda Town, Nukata District.https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_driving_wheel_of_JNR_Class_D51_%28D51_611%29_%2821032009071%29.jpg
>>11718424>People will often pick a plate based on if they are modelling a particular region like Hokkaido to have the train be accurate to what they are modelling.Ah right, makes sense. I'm just going for "Japan", and picking trains I like (but trying to get the rolling stock accurate atleast). I'll see if I can find where each would have ran originally, and see if I know any of those places from anything I may have watched or whatever and have any level of fondness for, and go with that number.
>>11718433Well I've given you the info for 611.If you read the Google Maps reviews for 453, someone mentions that it worked in the Kagoshima and Sendai regions, which are almost at opposite ends of the country.I will dig a bit more for you on the other two, but nothing was showing up when I looked for them earlier.
Anyone have a crack for SCARM2?
>>11718424Ya I generally check if the historic route matches my layout, then check if one engine had a particularly interesting story behind it or any spectacular prominence and go from there. If nothing really fits I pick a number that's dissimilar to my existing engines. On rare occasions there's a number that fits with other aspects of my life (352 is the original displacement of Ford's FE big block and all 352/360/390 blocks are cast with "352" on the front- which would include the 1968 GT350 Mustang in the movie Bullitt)

You know, I never really cared about lighting on/in trains, but after installing lights in a rake of coaches, I now HAVE to do it to every piece of rolling stock I own. It makes such a difference.
If I want to practice painting and weathering models would it be cheapest to practice on rolling stock easily available to me within my country?
>>11720664I mean, probably, yeah?Just go on [used item website of choice] and buy a cheap bulk lot of old rolling stock to practice on.
One iteration 3 of 3D Printing Lady on my P1S. Going to remove the "Lady" name plate on her side in favor of a Waterslide sticker of the name in gold foil.
>>11721581NeatI'm planning to get a 3D printer later this year
>>11718269What's a cheap train to get as a cat toy?
>>11721726Hornby Playtrains
>>11721729Seems legit, do you know if you can keep these things running 24/7 or if there's a big button version a cat could use?
>>11721729I'm afraid they'd knock them off the tracks too. I don't want them to get hurt.
I kinda like the idea of trains going around a track but I could just play Factorio because holy shit the price of Hornby stuff is outrageous.
Should I just bite the bullet and join a Club? The space for my Layout is so tiny, but with a Club I gotta convert my Engines to DCC.
>>11722349Take the N scale pill
>>11722444I think I should. I already have an N-Scale I got from a Train Show with 5 couches, and an Ebay seller offered me a deal on a Kato D51.
>>11722546If it's the model number 2016-9 D51, they're basically giving them away on Amazon (although I guess it depends on country).I got mine for AU$82 (on a slight discount), but right now they're kind of fluctuation in and out of stock by Amazon Japan (offering the low price), and 3rd party sellers listing them for twice that.
>>11722564Huh, $95 ain't bad but then I gotta find accurate coaches
>>11722579Got you covered 10-034.Add interior lighting kit 11-214 for maximum comfy.
Where's the Hattons replacement?
Learned a neat trick, if you're installing interior lighting on coaches or whatever away from your layout, just grab a spare piece of track, and put a 9v battery upside down on it, each side touching each rail, now you have a place to test it. Works on both N and HO/OO
>>11724357Now I want to do this in the club car while having lunch on a trip through the Alps.
>>11718269has anyone bought from the bradford exchange? i'm thinking of getting their coca-cola through the years train set.
>>11724859DON'T. They have a habit of "accidentally" putting customers on a subscription.
>>11721733why would you want your cat to have a train to chase 24/7?it would get tired of it just like you would, sooner rather than later
>>11718269I have a 1954 Godzilla toy that scales with HO model trains near perfectly. Anyone have any suggestions about what trains I should set up while I play with it?
>>11729305You're gonna want to look into the Ginza Metro trains. Kato has some in N-scale, but there is HO/OO scale from other sellers.
Smokey Joe arrived today so I can go ahead an take the body off and start properly measuring Lady to fit on it. Also bit the bullet and got a M1 Kato set from the local train shop along with 2 Bachmann engines "The American" and a UP Prairie.
What's the recommended glue to use for affixing small parts?Instructions say "rubber cement", but that's not really a thing in current year, beyond tyre repair kits.I've got Tamiya glue, but it melts plastic. I like the idea of non-damaging glue that can be removed without damage if needed, like hot glue, but the size of the applicator (glue gun) is much too big, leaves stringy trails, etc.
Watched "The Bullet Train" (1975), and then later "Bullet Train Explosion" (2025) and it was actually a pretty good modern day movie/sequel and I can recommend a watch, just skip the first 60 seconds as they show an action real during the opening credits of all the major shots of action which take place during the movie, which is kind of a spoiler. Your bitch ass better not watch the dub either.Anyway my /toy/ point is, at various stages during the film they use toy trains as irl demonstration/planning tools. They start with Plarail, move on to Kato N, and then finally Kato HO complete with track and everything, moving under its own power. I found it amusing and I was also able to point at the screen and go "I HAVE THAT"
Any of you paint your trains? Any advice for painting them to look realistic at scale?
i really want a big boy but the ones that seem to get the proportions correct are all gigantic O scale/super expensive
>>11744234I heard the Kato one (N scale) is good. Depends on your definition of 'expensive' though. I think it's about US$400
>a train set made for literal toddlers>$400how the fuck did this happen? fucking Lego trains aren't this expensive
