Until the movies, most of the marketing made it seem like the toy designs were actually accurate representations of the characters, not approximations limited by the Lego's constraints. The original FMVs used for commercials and the pack in mini CDs. The point and click web game which was a huge source of lore before the kids novels were released. Even the comics.

I didn't even care about the lore of the Pupununu Master fighting against Fiyah of the Water Tribe, because i make my own damn lore. Anyway, that's also why I like Hero Factory better. The first year or two was simple enough. Main team has their first year of adventures, then get upgrades year 2. Then we jumped back and revealed their mentors were also Toa in the past. Ok that was still easy enough, but then it gets to another generation after those guys mutate or something. And then we return to the present and the first Toa we meet mutate. Then there's like two other sets that come in that I don't know the origin of. And maybe the plot is simple enough thematically(good vs evil), but it just became wave after wave of new characters with barely any characterization or personality in the designs. The standouts were the villains because they had fairly unique designs.
I get this since so many Toa are just generic looking but the Bohrok are one of the most brilliant toy designs ever. The play feature with the canister, and how it works as part of the lore plus the parasite mask gimmick, it's all brilliant and the fact that it's a toy you build with the features just makes it so satisfying. I don't think any release after them really lived up to the potential, especially as they cut down on more elaborate engineering towards the end.
