Nah, me my pal jarrett took a romantic weekend together to zolocon. We met Todd McFarland and all that.

Lel this is that Willy wonka event all over again
>>11748775
See, someone else already called it
>>
>>11748771
I still can't figure out why people paid so much on a convention they knew nothing about? I tried looking up the marketing and it's vague as all fuck.

>>11748773
This was the first thing I thought of when I read the OP.

This was the second thing I thought of.

Even the Chocolate Factory blunder felt like it offered more of an experience lmao.

How is it that people are able to put on unlicensed events like this and charge money
>>

If Mattel wanted they probably have the legal grounds to C&D it. But why the fuck would they bother, it's just legal expenses to close down an empty warehouse with a shitty pink cardboard house in it? An argument could be made that it hurts the brand with how pathetic it is. Still not worth for the billion dollar company to fuss over.
I'm sure others would waste no time shutting them down though.

what do they want to do

was this ran by the willy wonka guy lmao

Didn't mattel shut down power con or some motu related event? It's been years since I last thought of it, a guy named val ran it, I think

I wonder how many things played out like this before the era of smartphones and internet making it incredibly easy to let the masses know a convention was just a scam.

Seems like lots of people like the idea of making all their money in ticket sales while sticking a handfull of minimum wage actors into a warehouse or ballroom and then running off.

I don't really know about any pre-dashcon convention scams but I've seen docus about tons of music festivals that went tits-up because of terrible management or outright scams. Bull Island comes to mind in particular since it ended with the angry crowd literally burning everything to the ground.

dashcon 2 was last year

Honestly I thought this was a goof image, just some sort of out of context exaggeration or something but then I saw a video on yt about it. People paid real money to be there for what looks like a kids party spread out too far in a warehouse. Barbie has some hardcore and dedicated fans, and I'm certain mattel is or will be in contact with the organizers over using their brand name in a way that makes their star brand, sorry motu, look bad. Remember, mattel sued the guy who used Barbie for a stop animation film about the late great Karen Carpenter.
You should watch the movie if you can, either out of curiosity or because you're a fan of Barbie or if you just like Karen Carpenter but it's kinda tough for Carpenter fans since it's y'know, a less than fun story.

I'm honestly wondering how these events sell at all. It was not on the news, on Youtube nor posted on some store prior

Did they bring back the ball pit?

But all those figures look cool, whats the issue?

Mattel didn't kill Superstar the Karen Carpenter Story; it was the combination of the director Todd Haynes (yes THAT Todd Haynes) basically portraying Karen's brother as a closeted psychopath who hated his sister and him not getting the rights to the Carpenters music, which allowed her brother to bury the short filmm

I honestly tried finding any marketing. I wanted to see what they could've possibly used to get people to pay this much money for something they couldn't even see pictures of.
All I found were videos and banners on instagram saying all the shit they were supposed to have and women talking about how awesome it was going to be
>>

I thought I read that Mattel DID sign off on it. It wasn't their convention, but it still had to be okayed by them. After the news came out of what happened they distanced themselves from it.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realize haynes had done so many films. Might check out the velvet underground movie.
I also wasn't aware that Richard was the real reason behind the movie being yanked, never really paid him much attention since I just like the sound of Karen singing and some of her drum solos and fills.

Me, I'm just curious if it was predominantly run by a man or a woman. As in, truly academically curious.
