>JAPAN GROUP BUILD IS ONGOING

previous thread: >>11728651

This thread is for the discussion of scale plastic (and resin, PE, wood, etc) models kit
-Post photos of your builds in progress and your finished builds
-Have your builds critiqued or critique others
-Discuss tips and techniques
-Ask for advice or give advice to others

Always remember: Debonder removes the jizz on your model without melting the plastic.

Getting there with the GT40. I think it'll be a while before I do another car they just don't capture me like the planes do but it's aight. The rear engine compartment of the Fujimi kit sucks, it doesn't fit. I think the easiest thing to do is just to assemble the body and glue the rest in place to fit best as possible but we'll see

not yet, but its in the stash. baby bereg is pretty close tho. Make sure to test fit how the cab fits into the chassis, it's a pain in the ass since you cant see where the fit issues are. I had to trim those front hooks extensively.

yeah the bereg has the same chassis but only one cab instead of two. Thank you for the advice, I'll be sure to test fit it first. yours looks like it's coming along nicely btw

Grabbed a few AK acrylic markers at a show recently, they are quite good for bullshit like cockpits or pioneer tools and do well without priming. I wouldn't do a whole model in them but for kids or people not in a position to easily airbrush, not absolutely terrible under some weathering.
Which begs the question, because its AK, what are they really for a fraction of the price.
>>
>>11759616
Probably permanent markers. I found that using a fresh Sharpie or Marks-A-Lot produces a good gloss black with some time and patience. Not clue about the other colors though.

To the anon from the last thread that recognized the chassis for the RA2 Tesla tank
I hate how much everything fits together, the turret ring for the M42 is slightly bigger than the turret base for the Tesla coils
A conversion to make it into the render-accurate version is dangerously easy

beginner here, got a 3m 6200 mask some 6001cn filters with a 3m 5n11cn pre fitter, when spraying my tamiya paint i could smell it, is the pre fitter i'm using wrong perhaps? or what other factors could be the case here
>>
Do you have a beard? is it properly tightened down? I get some odor when spraying with my half mask with VOC filters if I dont tighten it properly.
>>
hold your hands over the filters and try and breath in, if its easy then its not sealing properly somewhere
>>
>>11760623
You know, if you keep spraying without a mask until the burning sensation stops, you won't need to use a mask ever again
>>
>>11760661
its difficult to breathe in, but no sure why i still smell the fumes
>>
>>11760675
when you block the filters and breathe in your mask should suction into your face.

i'm trying to get into this hobby but it honestly fucking sucks, the gx100 paint and tamiya mr tool airbrush cleaner have fumes so strong that i'm feeling dizzy the second i open the fucking pot, and yes I have a ventilator airbrush box AND a half mask with vapour filter, doesn't seem to block it

mr tool cleaner also seems to have melted all of the rubber o-rings in my $150 made in germany airbrush, so now I have to drop even more money buying a replacement

and the thing I was spraying? I was trying to de-tack the masking tape but it has still ripped up a shit ton of lacquer from last week's spraying

so im sitting here with a couple hundred bucks of half broken tools and half broken lungs - what the fuck is this shit? are you guys all insane or something?

>>11760862
Use acrylics and learn to brush paint some things. "Mr. Airbrush Cleaner" sounds like a meme product, there are a lot of household products that can work.
>>
>>11760879
are you really going to buy a new airbrush because you busted an o-ring
>>
>>11760862
switch to acrylics
buy a replacement o-ring
peeling paint happens because there was no primer or left over mold release on the plastic

You made mistakes that have simple fixes and learned something for future builds. Yea it's frustrating and I could see taking a day or two off from building, but anything worth doing is going to have a learning curve. I'm pretty sure every single thing I've built, designed, studied, learned or done has involved a series of at least minor fuckups along the way.
>>
>>11760862
>half mask with vapour filter, doesn't seem to block it

If it doesn't block it then you have no vapor filter, just a particle one. In EU the organic solvent filter is indicated by a brown stripe. In burgerland they probably use a combination of numbers and body parts along with gang signs to distinguish the different filters so can't help you there.
>>
>>11760862
I just use a paint brush
>>
>>11760862
yeah the only reason to use lacquers is for priming and varnishing. I typically use mr surfacer in a rattle can and use acrylics for my air brush. as for cleaning your equipment; acrylic thinner, acrylic
air brush cleaner, and water works. lacquer paint is not worth it, and acrylics are way less toxic.
>>
>>11760862
>are you guys all insane or something?
Of course not. All these happened because mistakes were made somewhere. Yeah there's a learning curve but you can help yourself and take notes and learn from your mistakes.
>>
>>11760862
100% skill issues from going balls deep in the hobby with airbrush and hundreds of dollars worth of equipment instead of sitting the fuck down with a paintbrush and learning how it all works

>In conclusion, let's summarize the Wheatfield kit. First, its advantages are excellent articulation, with unique movable tracks and suspension. Second, it offers good assembly with a small number of parts, the fewest photo-etched pieces, and is the easiest to assemble in about 12 hours. Then, the disadvantages are: 1. The marching lock is from a post-war version, requiring the interior to be cut out and hollowed out for wartime use. 2. All road wheels and rocker arms lack casting texture, requiring manual application of putty. 3. I dislike the orange peel texture on the turret, and the turret and hull are not from the same version. 4. The gun barrel is split in two for the purpose of selling printed parts, making it difficult to stretch; the barrel should be seamless, and the lack of a plastic muzzle brake and the textured printed parts require sanding. 5. The turret rails are very shallow; I recommend using a 0.8mm drill bit to enlarge the holes, otherwise they are unlikely to glue properly. That's all. Thanks for your support

the major things you can see in the photos are the step at the wing root and the part on the nose where I forgot to fix where the clear coat dissolved the color coat. theres a few really ugly seams if you look around too
but there are many other bad things I did on this build and that makes it mediocre
>fuselage to wing seam is atrocious top and bottom
>didn't read instructions on decal placement thoroughly enough so the balkenkreuz and the EM on the other side are in the wrong spot and it looks really dumb
>pilot end of the canopy is wonky due to it being in 3 parts that don't really align really well
>missing a bunch of kit pieces and PE details on the canopy like control panels, electrical boxes, handles etc
>didn't fix the seams on some parts good enough or at all
>wrong colors
>exhaust looks a little weird and I didn't have anything to drill the holes out

mostly just being nitpicky about my own work, its certainly not the worst one I've ever built. had I not lost interest so hard halfway through I could have done much better
>>
>>11762825
nice work, the color fading looks really good
>>
>>11762898
I think the overall impression is pretty good. But it's exactly self awareness like this that makes the next model a better one than the previous one.

Might I suggest one improvement to finish the BF-110? It's hard as tits to find pics of that aren't simply other models, War Thunder or drawn diagrams, but the V-shape antenna from the two vertical stabs to the spike you have on the canopy is the kind of detail that really takes a model to another level.

>>
>>11763775
it's the worst when said individual links are also multiple parts per single link
i think it's the select few hyper realistic autists who demand the individual link tracks
i don't see why kits can't have the individuals and the vinyl tracks at the same time, i know tamiya released a few kits that had link and length tracks along with the belts
>>
>>11763775
I'm waiting for the day they make articulating parts on the sprue like you see on gundam kits. imagine having workable tracks ready to go as a single part.
>>
>>11763775
I would not "hate" them but fucking Trumpeter and probably most others just suck at actually making them.
>Gates at the most retarded parts instead of places you could nip them off cleanly
>Ejector pin marks in the most visible place
>Oh by the way each link is in fucking 3 parts
>Made out of the most soft AND brittle mix possible

Link and length is probably the best way if done "okay", but shit link and length makes me just wish these retards just cast the whole chassis in one piece and I could save 80% of the build time.

Rubber tracks are so shit 99% of the time that I have been forced to print single link tracks for 1/72 kits.
>>
I'm not a tankfag and haven't finished a tank model since I was like 8 so this is just me thinking out loud but wouldn't it be reasonably easy to make a "pre sagged" track piece that fits the wheels naturally and shows its own weight...? And just split the whole track into maybe 5-6 pieces? It seems rubber tracks and individual links are both extremes of something best solved with simply making the parts molded in a way they seem weighty

Since the turret ring is slightly bigger, you can use the M42 turret base to hold the Tesla turret

for a top notch solution use ca glue, ca filler, and instant set spray. for putty, use so much it becomes a positive detail on the seam and sand it flush with a sanding sponge or file.
>>
>>11767154
>>11767584
Black-pigmented CA glue is by far the best way to fill gaps, it's more shock/crack resistant than the clear stuff and doesn't shrink or reactivate the way most air-dry putties will. For the larger gaps use two-part epoxy putty like Milliput.

That's more of a "better safe than sorry" thing, like laying down gloss varnish before decals. Sure you can do it without, but to be sure you get a better result, you'll take those extra measures.

You may be using too much thinner. The idea is to kind of grind small amounts (like, dab with the end of a toothpick) in and then streak it, at least how I do it anyway. I think I watched Mike Ranaldi videos although everyone hates him. You can also use it to post-shade panels etc. I came to it because I got fed up of the "clean but rusted" style that I don't think exists in nature.
>>
>>11768752
Yeah thats way too much for an active-duty sub, you could do a diorama shipyard with it in mothballed condition, that would be neat

>Don't paint your models out of sunlight or you will get the paint wrong

Sunlight vs cool light bulb vs warm light bulb vs daylight bulb makes a huge difference. My dad does some traditional painting on and off and he only painted during the day for this exact reason. Though it has more to do on how you intend to display said model. If you think this is bs, go get your brain checked.

Prime goyim material those people. Only after the "Digital Millenium Copyright Act" did the requirements start to get a license for each and every logo or design. Now a kit of some P-51 Mustang has a "Boeing licensed product" sticker on it. This is such a grift.

I throroughly regret doing this. I had the bright idea to try and drill out each individual square of the grille but very quickly made an absolute mess of it and decided to just cut my losses and open it up completely. I was going to try scratch building a new grille with PS sheet but I think I'm stupid or something, I couldn't figure it out.

Thankfully I found someone on ebay that sells 3d prints all the various different grilles these trucks had IRL, specifically for this kit so I'll just order one of those and continue on

>My dad does some traditional painting on and of
I do to. Ofc it looks different, you can still account for the differences if you know what you are doing, even moreso in models than in paintings since you rarely mix colours and mostly use premade tones that do not change. Painting something at day or night or any light looks different only under the light the model is still the same, as long as you do not try to adjust the paints you use during night in order to make it look like it does in sunlight while it is in different conditions then you will not have any issues. In traditional paintings if you use acrylics especially you always need to mix tones and often merge colours on canvas/paper which you will have to do with one consistent lightsource otherwise it doesn't fit. Sunlight is best since you will mostly see the finished painting in sunlight but it's not imperative.

Japanese modellers themselves tend to have more confidence than skill anyway. I have seen Twitterbro tier stuff from Japs when it comes to stuff that is not a car or a mech, so I do not even take them seriously for a lot of what they say, advice or otherwise.

I'm moving into a new apartment soon where I'll be able to have a much nicer modeling setup than I currently have, would it be utterly moronic to spend $700 on a DR150 compressor? On the one hand it's one of the best compressors on the market, it's refrigerator compressor level of noise, it's apparently extremely well built, and it's not like I'll miss a meal if I buy it. It seems so irresponsible to spend that much money when I can buy a small harbor freight compressor for $150 that's a bit louder, sure, but it's a quarter of the price.

I have one of these too, but if money was no issue I'd go with the quieter one. The sparmax is pretty loud. It's still a great compressor though.

The lack of opening hatches is the definite fuck up of this kit (despite what the box says), the drive wheel is still a standard T-whatever one so you can use any spare rmsh-type or the Russian double pin tracks

Was another bronze recipient for aircraft in 1/72. Silver for 1/72 was an Idolm@ster F-16 (I spoke to the builder and have a picture that I will share later). The judges just pass judgement on build quality: seam management, painting, etc. I do believe that size could play a role too as gold for aircraft across all scales was a 1/18 Harrier, but it definitely deserved the award.

Also the X-29 guy is a Gundam builder normally. I encountered him when I was picking up my model again.
