For a youtube cartoon I thought it was alright. We're potentially witnessing the last attempt on Mattel's part to market the franchise to young children. More than anything else it reminds me of the other webisodes mattel has produced for the likes of imaginext, dc, and hot wheels. Now I'm just wondering if there's any merchandise planned to coinside with the series. Seems like a great jumping off point for Imaginext MOTU.
>>
>>11825198
I imagine it's an E-tail exclusive convienience. That core four pack with goatman was packaged similarly, as were the hot wheels.

Pretty lackluster for an exclusive with early membership ordering. Maybe if it had been back in April/May...
>>

Ya, as an early exclusive that would have been nice. As is, it doesn't introduce much. They could have at least included some extra accessories, like the goblet, and idk, maybe Trap-Jaw's dismembered arm for He-Man.
>>
>>11825183
I got to say, movie skelly looks great. I love how they've done his head and hood, I think the crook on the havok staff is so simple but makes such an impact that I wish it was the standard design from the beginning.

Really fucking sucks that the few stores in my area aren't stocking the movie figures. I guess theyve chosen to carry toy story 5 (?!?!?) instead of either the motu movie or the new DC line.

The idea the creator of the toys had was

>Skulls are a symbol of mysticism
>Factions would fight over Greyskull hence the flag that flipped around depending on if you wanted the Evil Warriors or MotU to own it
>The castle was the skull of a giant buried in the ground with a castle built around it
>It has time warps inside of it with weapons from every era
>random people and groups would try to raid it but the more time they spent inside the more theyd go insane
>Skeletor became a skull wizard barbarian because he was thrown down the soul of wells sticker full of monsters which is why the castle and main bad guy have skulls
>something about ancient aliens cause of a few stickers like the space suit and computer
>>

It's guarded by the powers of Good because Evil having it would be a problem

>20 episodes
>episode one lightly focused on he-man
Let's say the next 9 each focus on the major heroic warriors, then the additional 10 focus on the evil warriors. Skeletor, Lynn, and Beastman like MAA and Teela each take up one ep each. If I had to guess we'll see Mek, Battle Cat, Ram Man, Fisto, Orko, along with all the evil warriors that appeared in the film. I'd be surprised if they deviate from that line up but MEF, Zodac, Stinkor, the Snakemen, Meteorbs, and Gygor would all be cool.

Mattel has infinite Barbie money forever, the He-Man movie is an investment in trying to revive their boy brand equivalent. It's a loss in terms of box office but it was successful with both critics and audience and has tons of positive press all around the internet, so as a very expensive advertising campaign it can be seen as a success. Keeping the brand in the public eye is a benefit if the Big Naked Gigachad Barbarian trend starts coming back around.

If the SECOND movie is also a big flop they will probably wind the push down.

>>
>>11826145
True, and that proves they have a vested interest in having a boy brand. But since they're merely a licensee for DC they also have an interest in maintaining a homegrown IP. Kind of like how Hasbro keeps Transformers and GI Joe going even though Disney fans probably make up 90% of their profits with the Legends and BLACKED lines.
>>
>>11826143
I pray they recognize and accept fan complaints of the first film as they undertake the creation of the sequel. This first movie is so painfully close to getting it. If by the grace of god the second movie can deliver on a generally competent action heroy He-man in addition to all the splendor of Eternia we'll make it. If not it's fucked.
>>
>>11825537
Neat
>>
>>11825965
Of course they are, the shitty film was just a giant toy commercial to sell merch and that's all they care about.
>>
>>11826145
Nah, they're just borrowing that and can lose it at any time. They want an in-house brand to throw around and He-Man is perfect for that.

I mean they do also have Hot Wheels, which also prints money. But that has different societal connotations and doesn't really have the same kind of "nerd following" a traditional Good v Evil story will bring in.

>>11826292
That's what really pissed me off the most about the film. It didn't have to be the best thing every created, it just had to be good and solid. But they actively went out of their way to undercut any kind of dramatic tension while also insulting itself and the franchise as a whole in the worst way possible.

The entire film felt like it was written by people who straight up dislike the franchise, which is kind of a kick to the teeth for people who genuinely DO like the franchise and all it's silliness.
>>
>>11825981
Capitalism always wins!
>>
>>11825503
Who's mustachio head did you use for this custom?
>>
>>11826337
>I mean they do also have Hot Wheels
They also own Matchbox which has been turned into a modern F&F/Hobbs&Shaw movie with John Cena coming to Apple soon. For some reason they were willing to offer Matchbox over Hot Wheels to test the movie audience.

For those that didn't read the article from the UK a couple of months ago, Barbie - for all the big box office hype numbers - translated into total shit for sales for Mattel. Mattel is certainly moving much more MOTU product right now in connection to the Amazon engine than Barbie was doing. So if a sequel is already being greenlit to at least start pre-production (script, retain cast, early budgeting and casting ideas) then I would say internally MOTU the Movie did well enough for early expectations and long term goals are likely still in-line with their vision.

>>11826337
>The entire film felt like it was written by people who straight up dislike the franchise
I disagree with this statement more than anything. I think it was carried by people who definitely loved the franchise and were trying to find a balance between hardcore fans (us), casuals (those who "remember" the idea of MOTU - also sometimes us), and those who mostly just know Robot Chicken or memes more than anything concrete (hi /co/).

If you ask me to name the most difficult thing of a GI Joe convention, it's that so many are hardcore to the point they know the comics, cartoons, and file cards inside and out. Those hardcore fans are to difficult to please and push everyone on the edge wanting to know more out too easily. In MOTU this was the .ORG forums. Anyone who remembers the Classics era knows how rough and hardcore .ORG got on the forums. With the fall of .ORG's forums you know have smaller hubs like /motu/ or /leddit/ or even /fb/ where it's more a mixture of people together.

<tbc>
>>
>>11826365
><tbc>
So when the movie is trying to do the memes people recall, hit the story beats and action people expect, and make it an accessible story to new people: Adam's journey from fish-out-of-water into the hero's journey, MAA's failed protector story and chance at redemption, Teela's... well Teela didn't get as much honestly so she was more a transition character in support of Adam and MAA's stories while her own journey was pretty reduced by comparison so I might have to think longer about her role after seeing the movie a couple of weeks ago. But the point is there's a lot to cover and this is a lot of good groundwork here trying to make fans happy and new people be interested. Given the constant praise I see the movie get I would say the studio did a good job trying to establish a solid enough base to build off of not unlike Iron Man which was made at a time with zero world building really in mind.

Hello!
>>
>>11826365
Yea no, there was no "attempt to find balance", most of the characters were played as completely unlikable assholes throughout the entire film. All the Masters were dicks the entire movie, Mossman was a sacrificial lamb who's death was played as a joke, the Sorceress was played off as some goofy chick in a bird costume, Randor died to a full on looney toons gag, and they were actively embarrassed about the names of all the characters including and especially the main freaking hero of the franchise. They made the same "Fisto fists people!" joke a dozen times and it wasn't funny the first time. The entire movie was filled with awful, bad cringey movie to the point where the least cringey character in the entire film was ironically Cringer.

And Jared Leto didn't even play Skeletor. He played the Joker cosplaying as Skeletor, right down to using the same awful laugh people hated from that awful harley movie.

the visual design departments put in lots of overtime to get this movie to look great, but every other aspect of the film just felt like they wanted nothing to do with the franchise at all. If the movie isn't going to care about it's own characters, how can you expect the audience to care?
>>
>>11825617
Because it's better
>>
>>11826337
>That's what really pissed me off the most about the film. It didn't have to be the best thing every created, it just had to be good and solid. >The entire film felt like it was written by people who straight up dislike the franchise
I can relate and my thoughts mirror much of your own, however I'm much more forgiving of the movie overall. Really the bulk of the film's problems are easily ignored if you ditch the millenial humor and stop making such an ass of Adam. There were so many points in the first half where I kept thinking "guys, just reel it in. this is too far". The movie desperately needed more ass-kicking He-man and less Don Knotts Adam. The Trapjaw fight specifically should have marked the turn of the tide but they kept going and that's when it starts feeling like a piss take. That doesnt turn around up until the Skeletor fight!
>>11826366
Agreed. Some anons disliked the Don Quixote angle with Adam but I thought it a brilliant take for the character in today's world, something people under 30 could really relate to, but again alot of that gets undercut by Adam being a buffoon. You had something great there but you just insisted on retarding He-man in his own film. The Thor movies, for as much as I dislike them and consider them awful adaptions of the Kirby source material, atleast began with a competent adaption of Thor before throwing everything they got right out the window in exchange for a bizarre golden retriever puppy-man take on the character. MOTU by contrast has done the exact opposite and I worry how that will pan out. At the very least the ending of the movie we got opens the door to cool shit. If they sideline He-man in the sequel to have She-ra show him up we're fucked.
>>
>>11826387
It's important to keep in mind Adam was teleported to Earth as a kid. The Heroic Warriors essentially endured 15 years of Skeletor's rule and so they've become jaded and cynnical. His return, for as much as they laugh and disrespect him, acts as a means to reignite the fire in their hearts. There's a charm to the idea of Adam serving as a Pollyanna-type given the stakes, but again it's betrayed but the unnecessary humor.

As for Mossman I dont buy his demise. For starters Skeleto needed somebody to make an example of, so it's best that Mossy (the one Master who's effectively immortal) got the short end of the stick than say Fisto or MAA. Even Roboto's death wasnt permanent, so there's no reason to believe Mossman's would be. The only death in the film that does feel believable was Randor's. That entire portion of the movie is frankly the best part because of it! To each his own though. Frankly the cast was far from this's movie's major issue. Everybody did a great job and I struggle to think of a single bad performance. Letotor was a 1 to 1 adaption of the 200X version with some Tim Curry sprinkled in, and he carries the movie hard as a result. I really dont see the comparison to suicide squad joker at all.

In closing I agree the fisto joke is fucking eyerollingly terrible and all the other gags in that vein were no better.

Anyone thought that the first part of the movie (all the way until time skip to adult Adam) was actually really good and if they kept that tone and balance, movie would be perfect?

>>11826052
I really hope we'll see more of Eternia and its people. Right now my biggest fear for the show that it will be just the main cast 5 heroes and 4 villains and little else

I think next character short is coming, page claims to have 3 videos with one hidden.

I, slighlty sad about those, I recall when leaks suggested next show is movie prequel with character shorts. Im fine with what we're getting (prequel show couldn't even use most of main charactersor get any real story progression) but short little adventures focusing on guys like Teela, Mekaneck, Stratos, etc would be awesome.
