I get where you're coming from, though; if it's a purely gameplay-influencing factor, it's a bit one-note and boring.However, to make it have story impact introduces yet another layer of complexity to the design, arguably an even deeper one than the gameplay. You've now got a lot of things to keep status track of both when designing story encounters and when actually implementing them in code. Say you want to balance the gameplay benefits of inhuman transformations by making towns and merchants distrustful or outright hostile to you; now you've got to decide where the cutoffs lie for each downgrade in your social status and come up with alternative ways to get certain story-critical encounters in towns to play out, and then implement and test how they all work out, as well as testing edge cases like a transformation happening in an area where you're not allowed to be with such a transformation and activating the relevant flags in the code, make sure the system doesn't proceed to completely shit itself due to the unexpected change in parameters. And then decide if you want to turn that kind of edge case into an actually intended encounter because it sounds like an interesting challenge both to design and to play through.This is exactly the reason this sort of project needs to have a fairly complete, cohesive vision from the word go; trying to get this kind of deeply interconnecting web of systems to cooperate when you're flying by the seat of your pants from one fancy to the next during development is a recipe for disaster. Which, unfortunately, means these kinds of game are likely going to be few and far between.
