/scaly/ - Scaly General #1648

Post lewd reptiles and discuss scaly stuff, male or female is fine. Dragons, wyverns, dinosaurs, lizards, snakes, and reptile-folk such as kobolds and Argonians are welcome, on top of other things with scales like sharks as well. Anthros, ferals and human/scaly are allowed, but please, no monstergirls. As some may take a few creative liberties on their creations, do inquire if there's a particular edge case you're unsure about.

It's a series of books aimed at middle schoolers. The names are probably shit on purpose although that doesn't really excuse how hard /scaly/ constantly glazes the series given how mediocre it is.
>>
>>83043161
Every tribe has their own naming scheme, usually named after plants, animals, or objects native to the areas they live. Nightwings are the exception, since they tend to name themselves in ways that are meant to seem intimidating (Fierceteeth, Battlewinner, Mightyclaws, Foeslayer, Darkstalker, etc). You also get a few named after their abilities or traits - or rather, the abilities they WANT you to believe they have (Mastermind, Fatespeaker, Morrowseer, etc.). Starflight is the exception to both rules, as he wasn't named by an actual Nightwing and was given a name that sounded "close enough" to the Guardians who raised him.

>how hard /scaly/ constantly glazes the series
How high are you? All anyone here says is the same thing: the series is mediocre at best. The characters and setting are all people care about, as the actual stories are your standard fare YA crap, and the author can't get out of her own way nine times out of ten when it comes to actually wrapping up an arc. The thing is, there's really nothing else in modern fiction where the main POV characters are dragons other than the even more niche Age of Fire series (which started off fantastic but completely fell apart in the end), so it's all we've really got right now until someone writes something better.
>>
>>83043843

NTA. Surely there are more dragon PoV series. If nothing else I'd figure there'd probaby be some trying to emulate WoF by now. It's been around for a while.

And every time I see somebody laud the "characters and setting" as if they're any higher quality than the narrative... I just kind of feel bad for them. It's still your standard YA slop in both departments. The narrative itself characterizes the characters and setting, no matter how dumb and inconsistent it makes them, unfortunately.

It's YA slop all the way down, just with dragons. People here give it too much leeway because they're desperate for dragons, I absolutely agree with that.

You've got me curious, how did Age of Fire fall apart? Never heard of it.
>>
>>83045694
>Surely there are more dragon PoV series.
Nope. Look for yourself - there's nothing that's as current or widely known as WoF right now, and certainly nothing that generates enough art worth discussing on an image board.
>You've got me curious, how did Age of Fire fall apart? Never heard of it.
Ager of Fire (by E.E. Knight) was a book series for a much older audience than WoF, and was far better written. The first of the six books came out in 2005; each of the first three books focuses on the POVs of one of three dragon siblings (Au Ron, Wistala, and Ru Gaard), while the last three books swaps between their perspectives after they all reunite. Unlike WoF, the characters are written very "dragon-y", so it reads much more like a typical fantasy story instead of "Zoomer teens, but as dragons".
While the first four books were very good (with the fourth having a very satisfying ending for all of the characters), by the time of Book 5, everything falls apart - the author wanted to get back to his main book series, Vampire Earth, so he just rushed through the remaining two books, which resulted in a notable drop in overall quality. In addition to literal spelling and grammatical mistakes (meaning he skipped having an editor read them before publishing them), Knight messes up his own timeline of events frequently, and makes several characters act like idiots to advance the plot by making them fail to notice extremely obvious things. There's other issues, too (like the big reveal about poor Imfamnia, who never gets justice for what happened to her), but the whole thing ends on a very sour note and really should have stopped at Book 4 (hence why I always recommend that anyone reading the series only go that far before dropping it). Knight later released two short stories to try to patch things up (one of which wasn't so widely distributed - again, Imfamnia gets no justice for the horror she is put through), but it does nothing to change the ending.
>>
>>83045694
Part of the issue is that WoF is insanely easy to get into, exactly because of the simplistic YA writing, and the tribe setup is condusive to donut steels. The volume of content compared to other series also helps. You could compare the series to Sonic or MLP and probably wouldn't be too far off.
>>
>>83045926
>as current or widely known as WoF
That's not the same as being good.
>>
>>83046102
At what point did I say it was good? The question was whether or not other dragon POV series existed, and the answer is "none that anyone today would know about". WoF and AoF are the only ones in the past 20 years, and of the two, WoF is the easier one for new readers to get into, is still ongoing, and has a comic adaptation (and, soon, a TV adaptation). Whether or not it's "good" was never part of the equation - it's just the only one that's accessible and thus easier to discuss.
That's the part that's really not clicking in that brain of yours, is it - it's discussed because it's current and more people know of it. That's all. The quality has nothing to do with it - which you've been told repeatedly.

I'm not afraid to say that I like games, movies or other media aimed towards a younger audience exactly because they're simplistic and not too serious. With life giving me enough to worry about, having some 'feel good' series is a great way to relax for a moment. Be it Spyro, TLBT, Dreamworks Dragons, and even WoF. They all give me this warm and fuzzy feeling. Quality is of course nice to have, but as long as the general feel is right, that's all I'm asking for.

Honestly, I agree with this, though for a different motivation (and I never read WoF). Ever since I dropped here, I've been reading a lot on RR and AO3, and eventually I realized that the books I want and the books I need are not the same.
I want memorable, gripping, tense, yet morose stories. They inspire and motivate me to draw at first, then it's as if they'd kinda over-stimulate my artistic-autistic brain, making me anxious, tense, and risking an art-block instead.
Stories that are just the right type of cute, give me the inspiration to keep drawing, even if thinking back at them, I could tear their plot and characters into pieces, for how many writing problems they had.

Lol, who do you think MAKES those rules? People disappearing in woods belonging to the fey, forced to wander for all eternity, is pretty much THE most common story involving faeries (or, in this case, faerie dragons) in European folklore. There's a reason ancient people would leave offerings to the forests and give them wide berths (and why, if an offering is not made with sincerity, not considered satisfactory, or if you're dumb enough to actually steal an offering, horrible misfortune will befall you).

Speaking of...
I just drew the noodle bathing scene from chapter 2 of Making Things Right, found through scalywn (https://archiveofourown.org/works/58249375/chapters/148333795), which is about a young priest finding out that their family heritage is basementing and torturing a poor noodle, and when that "mantle" falls on him, he decides to free and befriend her instead. The story had a lot of problems, but instead of dropping a rant about those in this post, I'll just say that bathing a noodle is an incredibly cute concept, and that she was very huggable.

I dont like how vorefags draw overly detailed mouths. I like mawshots, but not when they're portrayed so blatently. It's similar to how footfags draw overly detailed feet.

Valid. I will say, I have a distaste for all the saliva, and especially the odd bubbles they chose to add.
But, they are one of too tragically few who give the 'meat' within so to speak proper attention, to say nothing of teeth.

Dragon riders always has been a interesting concept to me and yet the only thing I've ever seen related to it is HTTYD. I havent dived into much other scalie related media, stories, games, etc but I know some stuff I always wanted to try like drakengard, panzer dragoon, and for stories the only one I know of is eragon. What i like about it is the bonding experience you get with your dragon as you fight for something or for survival. Not necessarily like HTTYD where they are more like wild animals being tamed but more in eragons way where you telepathically communicate with each other and make use of each other's advantages. For example the dragon is able to dodge and weave attacks on its own but with a rider they can strategize better allowing proper positioning and execution of attacks. Other than combat i think cargo or scouting would be fun. Imagine exploring the world with your dragon and you take a moment of rest and they watch you draw a little sketch of a remarkable landmark as you rest your back on their neck. Those kinda moments would feel great I bet.
>>
>>83060326
Bellies 100%. If they're lithe, it's the perfect curvature for you neck as you take a nap on them. If they're chubby, that squish feels like a heated bean bag for you to sink into. If you're into hunting roleplay, they can press you against them and tease how that's where you're going as they loom over you. If you fall asleep on them, you'll feel their mighty heartbeat vibrate through and over you, giving you a sense of security even greater than a cozy blanket. There's no going wrong with one unless they roll while sleeping.

I prefer less animalistic, more intelligent dragons, which turns "you're a dragon rider" more into "the dragon is carrying you."

Very nice, I wish she wasn't stuck as a Custom Delivery NPC, but c'est la vie - at least you can bring her around across all the world with Fylgja (who is back in PvP for 5k crystal trade). Wonder who the artist is, but s/he got across her cute endearing enjoyment of crafting down-pat.

An anon wrote some Ehll Tou stories too that you guys should read, they're great!

>XIV has a weird proportional issue with monster faces/head sizes. Like, all Vidofnir needs is a good denture plan and she'd be pretty hot.
I've noticed that all the monsters with proportion issues are the ones that were straight model rips-from FFXI; all the actually new models in XIV look fine. Ehll Tou's rideable model is new, but it's based on her dragonet form, which WAS a rip from 11 (specifically, it's a slightly tweaked version of the Dragoon's companion dragon model).
Dragons were generic monsters in 11 instead of friendly NPCs, so their faces weren't designed to look approachable and weren't rigged for facial animations, hence Vidofnir's and Fylgja's toothy grins. At least they blink now.
>I wish she wasn't stuck as a Custom Delivery NPC, but c'est la vie - at least you can bring her around across all the world with Fylgja
Yeah, it's a shame you can't talk to or interact with her when you're using her as a mount, but at least she's still tagging along with you (and is supposed to be following you around even when you aren't riding her. Remember: she didn't show up in Ishgard to lean human culture - that was her getting caught up in a hobby. She came there specifically to meet YOU so she could follow you around on your adventures and craft a song about your life and deeds, something she says is still her endgame when you finish her questline and she gives you the flute. Following the WoL is and always was her endgame).
Semi-related, but I want to see the artist of >>83072798 do one of Fylgja, showing off all of her Wolf's Den sports merch that she collected while totally not stalking the WoF as he was fighting in the arenas.

I feel the same about riders. Only because a lot of media portray the dragons as glorified horses doesn't mean every setting has to be like that.

Just give me a dragon partner to go on missions or adventures with.

>I feel wizards as magical "bomber turrets" on the back of a dragon is an underexplored concept.
>not a glorified horse
I feel like the dragons on HoH fit that definition.
They are the only beings capable of (safely) crossing the distance between the floating islands, dragon crews in wars tend to play the support role, keeping off enemy fliers from striking their vulnerable back.
A recent chapter showed a bombing run, a heavy flier carrying the payload with the crew having to cut the ropes while the dragon is beating as fast as they can to get in and out asap. While a lighter more agile flier plays defence and distraction.
Then you have the "wizard" on the back with a gun for when shit inevitably goes wrong.

Lol, that's actually the Fae Gwiber mount from FFXIV; she's small for a mount in general (all the Gwibers are, hence my comment about Ehll Tou being bigger despite being a freshly molted dragonet), but not small enough to be a Fae/Faerie Dragon. Technically, the Fae Gwiber isn't a real dragon at all - Titania read stories about the now-extinct dragons who supposedly lived on The First, and decided to try to make one as a playmate while she was still imprisoned in her castle. The other Gwibers are either demi-Primals that were "eaten" by the WEAPONs (and freed by you when you killed said WEAPONs), an entity created by Hades as a gift for Azim that never got to him before the End of Days struck, and a Sin Eater-like entity that isn't actually a Sin Eater but looks like one anyway. Can't remember what the Gwiber of Light's backstory was, though.
>>
>>83065337
This reminds me of a greentext idea that I never got around to writing: College student gets a job as a courier, but on his first day he finds out that he'll be working with a dragon. The derg will fly him around while the student handles the packages. I had a few scenes in mind, like the pair overcoming the initial friction or coming up with creative ways to make their job easier, like making deliveries through a window rather than having to walk up to a third floor.
>>
>>83076408
>Titania read stories about the now-extinct dragons who supposedly lived on The First
That has some interesting lore implications given that dragons as a whole are non-native aliens to FFXIV's world, might it mean in some shards dragons evolved naturally? Somehow crossed the rift like Azdaja into the Thirteenth in the past? Really interesting to think about.
>Can't remember what the Gwiber of Light's backstory was, though.
>This light-bathed being answers to the sound of a horn imbued with the power of a hero of eld. In another time and place, perhaps it was the mount of a valiant soul who rose up against evil. Or perhaps not. The truth lies amidst the blinding light.
Basically a dragon mount that was maybe heroic, perhaps not.
