The problem is that Darktide has a lot of mechanics, all going at the same time, so you're basically playing an ADHD version of Vermintide where you have to make sure you're not cannibalizing yourself (ie. your ranged weapon does not do the job of your melee weapon and vice versa) and making sure your team doesn't do it with you. So for example, if you want to hunt specialists with a ranged weapon, your melee weapon has to be able to either deal with the horde or with the carapace elite, and you have to get used to constantly switching back and forth between your tools to deal with horde/specialists/elite/boss. Even on builds with a high ranged weapon uptime you will have to switch a lot, and you do have to get used to dodging while aiming/shooting in that case.You can make a gun lugger ogryn, going point blank barrage, and you can even do weird stuff like taunt + heavy machine gun, because the shots can cause stagger and reduce the taunt cd. I can play a gun ogryn that spends 80% of an t5 just shooting and I don't even need that much ammo. Anyway, you can make any class work with more of a ranged or melee lean, but the juggling of resources and dealing with mechanics is kinda essential for Darktide. So if you're good at shooting horde, specialists and bosses, your melee absolutely need something against elite/carapace and you have to use that unless other people are specialized into dealing with masses of elite. So your class does not define your role or playstyle entirely, but do see what blitz and ability option appeals to youThe game is very complex with some interesting builds and you can do just fine doing whatever you want in t1-t4 desu, but t5 is when you quickly realize if your team has no answer to something, because you just get overrun

>>83219305I think you were a lot more locked into melee combat in vermintide than ranged, because ranged had very limited resources aside from the new classes and why I personally didn't like that game. If you're going for ogryn then you have fantastic non-melee talents right before even picking your blitz, like regenerating your toughness while bracing a gun (this is actually quite fun). Afterwards you get more damage on dodging or being hit (which works for ranged), and so on. As a rule of thumb, your gun talents are going to be on the right of the talent tree for the most part, although you can technically make use of some of the talents on the left and vice versaBut again, pick whatever you like the abilties of and/or appearance. You can even turn Veteran into a healslut for example

Nothing the game needs you to do is actually very mechanically challenging BUT there's countless little knowledge checks happening at once so the real challenge is about awareness of multitasking. A rager will always attack in the same pattern, a trapper will always approach->shoot->(gloat if it)->retreat->reload>approach, etc. but you will eventually hit a point where you have eight ragers in front of you along with a few dozen zombies and a firing line of shooters supporting them and there's a trapper behind you that you can't even see but you know exactly how to dodge the trapper, create space and reposition while also mowing the lawn of enemies and it's an incredible feeling when that soundtrack is going. >not actually a fan of how melee focused ogryn seemsOkay but one thing that is really important to know about Darktide is that it is still -mostly- a melee game. As you get into the higher difficulties it's just not feasible to be shooting down every enemy, firearms tend to be problem solvers that you pick your moments with. Also, ammo pickups are shared between the whole team so if you run around wasting bullets on every single heretic your team will hate you. There ARE builds ammo efficient enough to use guns the whole time up to t5 but they are very much the exception.(oh if you want Ogryn but less melee then you want vet or arbites)My broad advice for builds in Darktide is to pick weapons and abilities that compliment each other's weaknesses and that you need three main forms of coverage- anti-heavy (crushers mostly, but bosses too), anti-special (things like flamers and trappers that you want to kill quickly before they put you in a fail state), and crowd control for horde. So like if I want to use the heavy flamer as zealot, that's a slow anti-horde weapon so I'd probably want to bring throwing knives for specials and a quick melee
