It is just me or is it extremely hard to get a small audience as an artist online now even when compared to around 2020 or so?

Almost all the mid size/big art accounts now are pretty much closed off to everyone outside of their private, most of the time paywalled, discord servers, making connectioms way harder to develop. If you're truly someone starting from 0 it's going to be a very very rough road to even reach 1k without waiting literal years, even if your art itself is really good and has potential to gain a fanbase.

Depends. I think if an artist is on the low end of Patreon, it doesn't change their output. If they're on the higher end, their output tends to slow down because they have enough subscribers to be a bit/very lazy (though that generally doesn't last forever). It's the guys in the middle that seem to increase their output. They have more subscribers than the low end folks, so they're more motivated to put in the time because they know they'll make money. But they don't make so much money they can just blow it all off.

Frankly, the idea of patrons just voting on what the artist should draw (from a list of shit the artist wants to draw anyways) seems like a no-brainer. Everyone wins as long as the artist doesn't wildly change their tastes out of nowhere. But if that happens, you just unsubscribe.

It almost seems like your best bet is to get big everywhere outside of Twitter first. Youtube, TikTok, Instagram, etc. If your shit is NSFW, just make "SFW" versions that those websites permit and link them to your Twitter. I remember during the Tumblr days, as long as you posted consistently, you would slowly but surely gain followers. This was because Tumblr would recommend your art to whatever your audience was. Footfags, vorefags, macrofags, etc. You pander to an audience, and said audience would share your work with like minded faggots and your followers would increase. I actually think that's a big difference that's not brought up. People seldom retweet/reblog shit on Twitter, and even if they do, it doesn't do shit unless that person also has a decent following.

It's a lottery, mostly. I still think consistency is way more important that people realize. If you're that concerned with follower count, you basically have to treat Twitter like a second job and upload multiple pieces of art each week, or an animation every week or two.

Was discussing with someone about it and I thought any artist will draw the body type they like the most. They don't have a reason not to unless it's a commission.
I couldn't really think of any ones that do a variety consistently.

Anyone else in art discords/groups where the people there seem to have a subtle dick-measuring contest? i'm all for competitiveness and whatever, but some people in these parts are downright condescending with how they treat artists with less experience/skill than them. Every compliment feels backhanded, every chance they get they need to tell you about how hard they had it, or they need to bring up their follower account. Most of them wont be openly dickheads, sometimes mask it with self-deprecating jokes "oh im so shit and bad haha lol", but then it feels like you're talking to a wine mom when you try talking to them. Am i going schizo? does anyone else feel this? I can't be the only one.
