/scaly/ - Scaly General

Post lewd reptiles and discuss scaly stuff, male or female is fine. Dragons, wyverns, dinosaurs, lizards, snakes, and reptile-folk such as kobolds and Argonians are welcome, on top of other things with scales like sharks as well. Anthros, ferals and human/scaly are allowed, but please, no monstergirls. As some may take a few creative liberties on their creations, do inquire if there's a particular edge case you're unsure about.

Can you give examples for snout shapes? I guess I have issues with dog snouts, the sharp drop from below eyes into a horisontal protrusion. I like slanted snouts way more.
Well illustrated by how horrendously ugly argonians are in the Oblivion remake when compared to the cute original Oblivion argonians.

I'd say there's more to it than just basic shapes. Is the snoot long or short? Is it blunt, pointy, or bulbous? How wide is it? Does it have a horn? Ridges? Pronounced nostrils?
As for me, I don't even know why, but I particularly enjoy this kind of flat topped snout with pronounced upper edges.

I do not have a definitive preference concerning the overall shnoot shape as it depends on the derg species, but I do find it endearing if they have bone teeth(?) on the upper or lower jaw like picrel. Idk if there's an actual term for that, i just think it looks cute, kinda like a snaggletooth.

>Wings of Fire was better when it was an unintentional chud book series. Racist icewings and nightwings, mudwings and rainwings being living racial stereotypes
Yeah I liked that.
With Mudwings was extra funny because Mudwings are described as dumb big strong dragons whose only family are their siblings because female Mudwings just go to an annual mass orgy to get plapped by random dragons in the dark (sometimes not even Mudwings) and then abandon the eggs to their luck, the first one to hatch is the one in charge of the others. I chuckled when Umber said in book 16 that Burn's plan in book 5 was to use the Mudwing army as a zerg rush to try to overload the magic ice wall.
Another thing is how the Icewings despite being portrayed as irrational gigachuds, were 100% right about Nightwings.
In Arctic's Winglet is revealed that the Nightwings convened an alliance conference with the Icewings but the whole conference was a lie because their real plan was to get the Icewing prince to plap a Nightwing who was brought as a carnal bait to get magic genes. And then when this went wrong they brought the prince himself and even when they already had two Nightwing dragonets with magic genes they refused to hand over the prince because they wanted to become the only tribe with magic. Also the fact they had to run away to a volcanic island implies that every single tribe kicked them out from their kingdoms.

>queen coral being a giga whore
To be fair Coral, while being a batshit insane bitch, wasn't promiscuous, she just wanted a daughter.
She mated with Gill and later had a clutch but then the statue destroyed the female eggs and she had to try again.
All of Coral's offspring are from Gill.

You just literally proved my point dude
With a rooster, a cock, if you will, you already have a solidly defined character that justifies its own existence. If it were a human, it would have to... look a certain way or be subject to modern day scrutiny.
Hell, it being a white-feathered rooster and not a black-feathered hen is already pushing it.

First Dwarf (a base-builder / action game where the MC is a dwarf in a mech) got an update, now, your small dragon friend, who is controlled by the second player in co-op, also got a mech. >What have they even been up to for the last like, 8 months? RITF must be deader than disco

According to CringeDragons himself, they were busy developing the game, but AFAIK, that is a dubious claim. See, before the lockdown, his dev team resigned, they said they'd stay until the new demo is done (apparently rewritten in godot), but it was never released. I think the devs expected it'd be ready Q1 this year. So I think they just left around that time anyway. But they did leave Cringe with all the outlines he could use to continue development. For the better or worse. He's definitely too autistic to just drop it.

After that, I found evidence on the kickstarter of a backer-only discord server. So what happened in that 8 months was likely visible there. I was genuinely considering making a pledge, just to see what is happening in that zoo, but I decided that $20 would be better spent wiping my ass with it.

Also, there is the drama archive discord server. I didn't dare rejoining it yet (I was there temporarily a year ago), but some CWCki level autists documented everything that was happening there. If they have a mole in the backer server, then it has all the details of the past 8 months too. I can drop the link to it if you want to peak inside, but in general you should not, for several reasons...

There was also some very minor update to the existing demo (not the "new demo" I was referring to) a month ago maybe.
That is more-or-less what I know.

I was hoping someone would draw these two characters AT ALL.
Be the change you wanna see, I guess. Last thread I already posted two sketches. Couldn't decide which one to finish. Today, I did a bunch of fixes to both versions, here they are. I asked here, and in another place which one people prefer, and everywhere, opinions were evenly split. Which is okay, it just means that either is fine, I suppose. I'll continue tomorrow.

>For what it's worth, the setting itself is interesting. The format is not something you can really find somewhere else, and it has a semi-serious community that does give decent writing advice (at least in comparison to fanfiction sites where the reception is far more mixed). I personally don't take it as seriously as others seem to though. I treat it more like practice for what I actually am very passionate about

it's a toss-up between two of them for me. one up from the bottom left, though i'd prefer it without the forest of nose horns (which i usually dislike), and the one two above it, though i'd prefer that one with a simpler pattern and more defined neck scales.

never was much of a fan of exposed teeth (lipless scalies are less kissable), and i'm a sucker for smooth, angular snoots.

a nice brow/neck can really carry a shout for me, though - for example i quite like the one in the third row from the top, third column from the left, despite it being unable to kiss and locking its tongue in a tooth prison
>>
>>83787734
i like the second one more. it's got really interesting perspective and shows front and center what's happening in the scene. it's easier to parse visually at a glance, at least to me.

Yes, that is the main reason why I made that version, Domingo was small on the first, making it difficult to read what is happening. The perspective making it more intersting is a nice bonus. One other edge v2 has is it looks more deliberate on Luciana's behalf, while v1 could be read as a prank.

V1 is more cute though, I think, because Luciana holds her hand like a puppy sleeping on its back, and because Domingo is standing on her belly. It's also more size-accurate, while V2 "cheats", she's shrunk there, plus the perspective isn't entirely correct there either. If it was, and Luciana was bigger, her head would be too far away, and the perspective would make it too small on the canvas. Also, V1 puts more focus on Luciana.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback! Now I'm slightly leaning towards v2.

>>83791240
So I'm NOT the first to draw her then. Honestly, it's for the best that someone has beaten me to the finish line, the sad thing would be if nobody drew her. Looking at the player count, people are discovering this game as we speak, so we might get more content later. Once finished, I'll also post my drawing in a few communities to help that process. And before someone would say those player numbers are still low, just consider that the shorter a game is, the lower the chance that two are playing it at the same time.

I'll have to draw Luciana in the knife cat meme format too (like I did with the steam sale dragon), with the knife being replaced with a rose held by Domingo

Probably a stretch to call it a snoot, but I absolutely adore on-model Vipers. The flat face and sharp features are supposed to make them look more monstrous, but somehow it ends up being all the more attractive to me. Everyone I have written down for credits so far is an -anon, all I got is Draganons, but /scaly/ is more than just dragons and it's kind of too close to Cavemanon in my head plus it kinda sounds shit. >long mouth
funnily enough from a biomechanical perspective, longer and thinner generally means less bite force and eats smaller, jumpier prey. big prey needs bite torque more than bite speed. the one with the "beak" upper jaw (looks more like colored scales to me, see the upper lip) has a very "this will FUCK you up if it bites you" jawline.

your pic is probably close to what it would look like from the front; it's a bit t-rex like. they had wide faces with robust jaw muscle attachment and tall, wide, reinforced snouts relative to other theropods for the purpose of crushing bone.

>blind spot
remember, from any angle you can see both pupils, the animal has binocular vision on you. if you can see at least one pupil, the animal can see you. a common dragon face would probably have about a 90-120 degree forward cone of binocular vision (similar to but a bit less than humans), but they'd also probably have a 240+ degree full field of vision (much better than a human).

A Dream of Wings And Flame: The magic system. I quite liked how it was done and enjoyed reading about the 'tism 'bold having breakthroughs with it. Only being able to use magic of elements you are intimately familiar is a terrific idea. It's a shame so much else around it is hot garbage, becoming intolerable after the first book.
Draka: I like the ideas behind it and hoarding people by accident. I'm not a fan of homosexuals though so I eventually just got sick of it.
The Dragon And The Author: The whole thing about coming clean to the fictional character that they're fictional. I was hyped for that and thought it was going to be the big thing going forward. Lo and behold, that plot point gets shoved aside for fucking 2/3rds of a whole 'nother book in favor of city building. At least it did eventually come back, but holy shit, the ending of the first botched the intro of the second.
And of course, pic related. Humanforming will never be acceptable. The issues that it supposedly solves are ones you made for the purpose of justifying it!

True, but having a wider cone of vision usually also goes hand-in-hand with lower depth perception, especially from the sides. A narrow cone of vision, on the other hand, usually gives you a more telescoping range - it's the difference between a shotgun and a sniper rifle. As is such, dragons are probably fantastic close to mid-range hunters, but they're not pulling the whole "hawk can see a mouse from over a mile away" thing. Of course, that doesn't mean a dragon wouldn't be able to SMELL its prey from that far, but in terms of visually acquiring their target, you'll see them coming long before they see you.

Dragon Kisser Anon here with the progress report:
Decided to go with the V2 version
Redrew Domingo to have a stance more befitting his character
Reworked some minor details
Inked the whole thing
I noticed last minute that Luciana has some elbow spike/feather things, I'll have to add those in. Also, her scales are quite pronounced on the back of the neck, the shoulders, and on the forehead, which I'll also have to draw. I have no experience with scales, so I'll have to figure that out. Luckily, she's rolled over, so I won't have to draw too many.
Honestly, I hoped that by the end of today, I'll have the flat colors in place, so overall, I didn't progress as well as I had hoped. Nevertheless, here is the current state.

>but they're not pulling the whole "hawk can see a mouse from over a mile away" thing
nah. they'd probably be better. and by quite a lot.

visual acuity has more to do with the absolute size of the eye (basically a function of light gathering capacity and retina density, but retinal cells don't USUALLY vary much in size). while it does depend on the size of their heads, dragons are pretty much always depicted with absolutely massive eyes.

>you'll see them coming long before they see you.
extraordinarily unlikely. a dragon eyeball the size of, say, a 220mm soccer ball, has so much light gathering capacity the dragon could potentially recognize your face from over a mile away using starlight alone. extrapolating the way your fovea and visual processing more than double the perceived focal length of your human eye, we're talking something possibly equivalent to a focal length of ~540mm for such an eye. human perceived focal length is ~54mm, for comparison, with physical focal length of ~22mm.

think about the size of a small hobby telescope objective (i.e. primary aperture/mirror diameter), and how many more stars you can see with one. dragon pupils are typically much larger.

funnily enough, their eyes are so large that an optically worse slit pupil might actually kinda make sense as a method to protect their enormous retinas from direct sunlight. they might mitigate the diffraction issues in other ways - say, multiple layered irises, such as a hidden horizontal iris that closes just behind the first.

and if their eyes use a stacked retina like jumping spiders, they could even have monocular distance vision, using aberration to recombine visual information into distance perception. and while we're at it, since dragons are idealized, might as well invert the stupid vertebrate retina and put the blood vessels BEHIND the light-sensitive cells instead of in front, which cephalopods do.
>>
>>83806087
To be fair, scaled creatures tend not to sweat - that's a mammalian adaptation. As is such, washing probably isn't that big of a deal in the dragon world, since there's no odor and most debris doesn't stick to scales.
Oral hygiene is another matter, though. Definitely needs to learn to brush his teeth, lest his mouth starts to smell as rank as Morrowseer's supposedly did.

About ten seconds after this, she gets hit with a wave and ends up looking like a drowned rat.

Tell her to draw more. It's one of my favorites.
Also, what' with women and being into dragons?
I swear it's come up more than most any other furry/scalie species.

Dragons instinctually appeal to them

If multiple monster taming games allow you to befriend the monsters, and you can raise an indo in Evolution, perhaps with some raised love and care.....

And Moon went with stinky, dirty Qibli instead of the well-groomed Winter? What is wrong with her???

Possibly lewd and amusing scenarios, maybe leaning male. Not so much an erper but writing stories and world-building I do enjoy.

NTA, I vote Reticulated python naga/anthro. I like the cute faces they have.
>>
>>83812818
Just lewd, I'd go naga. Lewd AND amusing, full feral. I'd avoid anthro, since the lack of legs naturally lends itself to a plenty of fun scenarios.

>Roommate is a dragoness in humanform
>decide to pet her when she's relaxing in dragon form
>rub her at the base of her tail where she's most sensitive
>accidentally make her cum on the spot, and now the two of you are too embarrassed to speak to each other
Lewd. And hot.

Nagas and vipers are a mite basic.
Anthros are rare, but rare for a reason. As they tend to lose the whole point of a snake.
Tsuchinkos can certainly be interesting. But they're kind of stuck to 'mascot' type characters.

My vote's on the python. Pythons are always cute.

I think that last page is actually the first page, out of order. From what I can read of it, the human girl had a bad dream, and wanted to lay with her dragon roommate for a bit. Then she decides to start petting her, which leads to the accidental orgasm when she rubs the sensitive spot at the base of her tail.
