What if instead of going to a traditional combat school, he took a lesser-used route like apprenticing to a Huntsman and traveling around Mistral with him(a sort of hero's journey, perhaps?) and that led to him being very self-reliant and obtuse when it comes to working with others. His self-sacrifice could be somewhat unintentional and come less from care for his team(not to say he doesn't care about them) and more from confidence in his skills and a sense of efficiency that leads him to do whatever he can on his own whenever possible, which leads to the burnout you mentioned.Additionally, the idea of traveling around and learning on the job could be used to explain/flesh out the hit-and-run trickster fighting style we talked about for him. His repertoire of feints and unorthodox moves could be a result of being enthusiastically told "Don't die!" towards a Beowulf by his mentor, rather than a style he consciously chose and refined in a controlled setting.
