“S-Susie!?” Ralsei practically squeaked as he rushed toward the dripping wet figure that had emerged at the edge of Castle Town. “What’s going on? Where’s Kris? Weren’t you going to spend the night at their place again…?”

The large dragon said nothing for a moment, and made no attempt to shake off the water droplets that clung to their hair and scales. When she finally spoke, it was in a muted tone, and she refused to meet her friend’s gaze.

“Yeah, uh… Kris… they got… stuff to deal with so I’m… Do you think it’d be okay if I crashed here tonight?”

“O-oh, of course, Susie! I’d be delighted if you stayed! Would you like some tea? Or perhaps I can make you a yummy cake?”

Susie held a hand up gently. “Um, Ralsei? If it’s alright with you… just wanna go to bed…” she mumbled.

The goat’s face fell for a fraction of a second before they recovered into a fixed and disarming smile. “Sure, Susie! Just give me a minute to revert your rooms back to normal.”

As he hurried on ahead in front of her, she noticed the light, almost invisible shade of pink where she had cupped his face with her bloodied hand earlier that night. Her stomach squirmed.

Shuffling into her Dark World room, she heard Ralsei call out behind her. “If there’s, um, anything you need tonight; warmer blankets, a midnight snack… just, let me know okay? A-and tomorrow, we can get you all set and looking your best for the festival!”

Susie turned back, summoning the last remaining bit of her energy to pass off something resembling a smile in his direction, though she still couldn’t meet his eyes. “Yeah. That sounds great.”

Closing the door, she slowly turned and faced the room. For a long moment she simply stared, her mind spiraling with thoughts and conflicting emotions. On any other day, the prospect of spending the night in Castle Town — in her own room no less — should have been a dream come true. Now something just felt… hollow. She finally found the strength to trudge over to her bed. The simple act of taking off her boots, spikes, and jacket felt like the most monumental of tasks.

Susie gingerly scooted past the spiked frame and onto her bed, grabbing a pillow as she did, and pulling her knees up to wrap her arms around. She tried to envision the wisdom and words of comfort the old man had imparted in her mind, but no matter how hard she tried, the image of the final prophecy overpowered everything else. No matter how many times she shattered it, the words always reformed. Unbreakable. Unyielding. Inevitable.

With a strangled sob she lashed out, sending a pillow sailing across the room. No peace would come to her here. She needed something else.

Hesitantly, she creaked open the door to her room and looked around. The hall was uncharacteristically silent, with no Darkeners to be seen. Still barefoot, she padded down the hall without a clear goal in mind… until she came to Kris’s room. It was just as she remembered it, with the shelves full of trophies shimmering from the twinkling stars along the wall.

“Really wish you were here right now, dumbass…” Susie muttered softly, moving to sit at the edge of the soft bed. Her mind flashed back to that moment. How the human’s normally impassive face had fallen further into shadow the moment she decided to bail after seeing their mom like… that. It made her stomach hurt. She should have grabbed them and ran, or… something. A real friend would have done something

Unconsciously, she had sunk onto the human’s bed, curling herself into a ball. Everything felt so hopeless. Her whole body was shaking. She felt so isolated, alone with the weight of the world — two worlds, even — crushing down on her. She knew she shouldn’t, she could talk to Ralsei… but the poor guy had suffered enough for one night, what more could be said? But Kris… it was different, wasn’t it? They were always so calm, just their presence alone had always felt so reassuring. Knowing the two loners shared this thing that was just for the two of them, that she could always count on their support… gave her the smallest of hopes. She needed that hope so badly right now, it was making her sick.

Without really thinking, she reached up and pulled one of the pillows down toward her. Her nostrils twitched. She instantly recognized that human’s distinct apple scent. Strange. As far as she knew, Kris had never slept in the Dark World before, had they? Ralsei must have been pulling out all the magical stops if they somehow captured the fragrance of apple shampoo into this pillow…

Susie pulled the pillow closer, and breathed deeply. In her mind, that looming image of the prophecy began to disintegrate. Instead, she saw Kris. How they smiled at her while she scarfed down her meal at the diner. Stifling a laugh as she botched the art of skipping rocks. How serene and confident they looked playing the piano. She didn’t know why, but the memories were calming her. Her shaking had stopped. Their reassuring presence could almost be felt in the room, and she found herself hoping the “prize” she had placed above their bed in the Light World would similarly ease the human’s burdens tonight. Susie wasn’t entirely sure what to make of this sensation. How could the thought of a friend in her mind instill this feeling of trust and security?

Taking another long sniff, she felt her muscles relax, and drowsiness begin to overtake her body. A sliver of confidence had begun to reveal itself.

Tomorrow will be better. They’d all go enjoy the festival together, find the remaining codes, and then… save the freakin’ world. For the first time since she arrived in Castle Town that night, she didn’t have to force out her smile, as she pulled the pillow tightly to her.

In her apple-scented dreams that night, she found herself with a view of a beach bonfire where all the Darkeners of Castle Town were celebrating, while she happily sat side by side with Kris, watching the scene in a shared moment of serenity and comfort so rarely felt in her life.

Love, or no love

and currently, love (as this board likes to argue) is supposedly only explicitly defined as the ham-fisted mushy yuri on display in chapter 5.

But I find it interesting that this chapter is also constantly challenging Susie (and the player) to define what love really is. Susie sure doesn't know, but the game seems to point a lot of fingers at different kinds of love.

In fact, it's spent 4 chapters building up an idea of love that Susie is extremely oblivious to. And yet, even if she doesn't know it can be called a form of love, she's still very receptive to it. Her closeness with Kris is an entirely different definition but no less important. Implicit trust, understanding each other on a level no one else can reach, being able to relax in each other's presence without stammering or blushing.

Maybe you won't call it love. Maybe one day Susie will as she struggles to define it for herself. But the bond she has with Kris is still incredibly important to her, and that's the exact reason this chapter is trying to test how Kris reacts to that bond being threatened.

What your saying here sounds like Susie can't have affection for someone else even if she does all this with Kris in your eyes. That may be lame shit for you but for her it's all pretty meaningful stuff, spending time with her, finally getting to actually know her, after years of never talking to her and her never directly engaging with Susie after the pencil thing, Susie is essentially getting to live a long sought after goal of finally being around Noelle and getting much closer on top of Noelle actually being really nice like how Susie always assumed she was.

What you described on Kris's part is realistically possibly implied to honestly be one-sided or not seen the same by Susie herself. You can't exactly say Susie's wrong or blame her if she doesn't feel like that over their relationship. Just cause we like Kris & Susie doesn't mean you can really just say Susie has to feel the exact same toward him or at least feel romantic toward him

Love is never gonna be simple or mutual, some people really like certain people for their own reasons and would dedicate everything even if that never ends up being mutual.

Susie likes Noelle, always has in her own views, but was never in a position she saw some chance or thought she had a reasonable shot of going for it so she just left it to never bullying her. With Kris, it's not hard to maybe she she hated him over a large portion of Jealousy over his life(Well off, seemingly good mom, close to Noelle, etc.) but also because he's the only other freak around yet nobody really treated him like they did her either. In her eyes, Kris really may be just that: Her best friend, the one to reach out and make her days a bit brighter.

Really wouldn't change that if her heart truly only wanted Noelle that she'd change that especially after, the very next day mind you, she has another special adventure where she learns that all this time the target of her heart not only felt the same but really did want to know her more but was far too shy to say anything for all these years. That sort of information means that not only did things in her life start getting better with/due to Kris, that her love actually has a shot after all and isn't just some pipe dream or impossibility, it can be real and all she has to do is give it her best. So she starts dedicating more time to learning more from Kris, being a better person outward, and improving, all for the sake of reaching something she once thought to be impossible.

You can't exactly erase the whole possible Dess projection Kris & Noelle may be doing onto her either. Susie's metric view is far more just about the one in front of her, something with years behind it in universe. Also, you can't keep bringing up the pencil thing as it's never been just that especially after chapter 2, it's been everything else as well, especially their talk alone in chapter 2.
