I think going black and white has a lot of advantages, but my favorite is that I wish more Western creators would experiment with it. The Japanese really got it right with manga. Not only does it cut production costs, but it also opens up a whole new level of creativity. Ironically, limiting yourself to black and white forces you to think more about composition, contrast, and lighting. From my experience reading comics, there are even times when color ends up hurting the artwork rather than enhancing it.
Like for example, I recently found out how this fella art usually gets RAPED by colorists.So yeah, hope the western world adopts the manga black and white style.You can produce work much faster, it can look better, less cost. Literally no downside.
I know the comment that brought it up was of Hilda, but that's like the only show that did that in a way that felt like it was "intentional" in a appealing way, instead of "lack of budget/time constraints" kind of away. The only time I liked seeing it.I think it's just more practical to keep it looking good when it's rigged animation, because it's always consistant because it's rigs. What I actually liked more from Hilda was when they intentionally had objects far away at a lower framerate than the things "near the camera".
All this talk of simplifying things for the sake of making things faster while still maintaining appeal makes me think about Panty & Stocking when it boils the character models down to chibi versionsIt's funny and doesn't actively make you think about time/budget possibly being a factor into it being done that way.
