"Popular"? Not particularly, it doesn't elicit the same degree of disdain the likes of foot fetishism does but it's still the butt of internet jokes and gross-out humor. "Prevalent" is another matter entirely since it seems to crop up in almost any art posting site with enough intensity that it'll get dedicated tags and categories and such (furaffinity and pixiv being the two big ones with on-site recognition, DA had one even before that but was more underground because DA was lazy as shit and didn't introduce things like tags until literal decades after other sites had).
