FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of https://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory.

I've been redesigning a character of mine in hopes of appealing to men more, since most of the visual appeal in this series is more towards women. Did I do a good job?

I'm gonna buy a drawing tablet with screen soon. Do I need to buy a screen protector too? It's a Gaomon PD156 Pro (picrel).

A screen protector's not strictly necessary (never had one myself and haven't had problems with scratches thus far) but one with a paper-like texture will make it feel more like drawing on paper. Beware, however, that this means extra friction on the stylus's nib, which in turn means it will wear down faster and replacements usually command a bit of a premium price. You do usually get a bunch of replacement nibs as part of the package deal of the tablet, though, often hidden in the stylus holder.
>>
>>84094498
Yeah, it comes with 10 replacements (and 20 replacements for 15 bucks). I'll try without the screen protector first and see if I buy a protector later.

I've been practicing art by trying to replicate an artist's character, having the original drawing on a second monitor as I drew.
This is the latest picture. I notice slight improvements around the face, but I an struggling to draw the body and hair consistently plus my line work isn't very straight or clean.
Any advice on cleaner line art, or do I just need to practice more?
>>
>>84098669
For reference, this is the original artist's picture. If anyone can find a drawing stream of the artist (Atastic) I'd be really greatful since I want to see how they do it.
>>
>>84098669
You're making small tiny strokes Bad. There's a reason why you're told to use your wrist
>>
>>84098940
Thats fair. Often what happens is that I initially like a line I made, then sometime down the road, I realize I need to adjust it, erasing parts of the line and reconnecting them to the best of my ability.
In reality, I should probably just redo the whole line instead of trying to correct small bits of it, right?
>>
>>84099075
>In reality, I should probably just redo the whole line instead of trying to correct small bits of it, right?
Or just start and end where the line starts and ends. I can tell you're making small strokes because the strokes don't *actually* connect.
Start farther up and end farther down. If you're accurate enough: When you redraw the line, start drawing inside of part of the existing line before where you erased instead of starting at the exact point the line now stops. If the line connects to another line inside of a curve also continue a bit inside that line.
You go over some of the existing beginning and go over some of the existing ending in one smooth motion and this'll give you the right general direction.

You're also missing a lot of places where the original artist leaves lines open. Not every line in her stuff connects. She probably doesn't have hard and fast rules about where to gap her lines, so try to get the feel of where she does it rather than exact placements.
>>
>>84098669
I think if you want clean lines you should try doing it in one stroke, like one dtrong curve for the arms. but also this art style looks simple enough that this is something I would personally do in a vector program with vector lines
>>
File: elfdraw2.png (220 KB, 1000x1500)
220 KB PNG
>>84099305
So, start the redraw where I originally started the line and end it where I need it? Then, only after that, should I erase the original line? It seems pretty simple enough.
Also, since the artist is an animator, I was thinking that the empty spaces could be where the artist thinks there should be movement, but I really don't know.
>>84099339
>Vector lines
Interesting. Is that something I can do in Krita? I thought about using something like the Bezier Curve tool to try and get the curves better, but would vector lines be a better alternative?
Also, I'll go ahead and post my first ever attempt at the character, first drawn a few weeks ago. While I am nowhere near good, I am improving and I hope to keep improving.
>>
>>84099457
>start the redraw where I originally started the line and end it where I need it
IF you ERASE a LINE:
Start the NEW LINE slightly before where you ERASED the ORIGINAL LINE
End the NEW LINE slightly after where you ERASED the ORIGINAL LINE]

When you erase a line the erased section has a start and an end, just line a line has a start and an end. The new line starts before the start of the erased section, and it ends AFTER the end of the erased section.
>>
>>84099457
NTA but I think another issue too is that a consequence of your shorter strokes means more line adjustments. Personally I feel like it's better to overshoot your lines and erase, compared to trying to end your stroke at a connection point, if that makes any sense. Also, line sculpting (that is, adjusting linework by drawing over and erasing parts of it) tends to look better when you have dynamic line weights, because of the variation. When you have a single brush size like this style here, it becomes a bit more obvious where you have erased.

I might take a stab at his character myself later, although not in that style. Simple characters are always fun to draw, especially since means I'm not worrying over complexity.

I figure if I'm gonna keep the long arms, I should give her long legs to match. I'll still keep her around six feet (heels included) but make her squimched.

Will 90s inspired anime/manga or capcom-like art style still be profitable switching into the 2030s online scene like it is now, or will I have to accept I'll likely stay as a niche unpopular artist with a few thousand followers uncapable of living off their art at best?

I'm beginner/amateur level, a late starter (25 years old) and I'm aiming to emulate the art of Rui Araizumi to draw my own comics + I've burned way too many bridges with many bigger art mutuals and spaces through those last 5 years to make it this decade (I'm working on fixing my social skills and try to talk about art with others as less as I can from now on)

Probably not here, a lot of us are either just starting out or are generally really slow to output anything consistently. There are outliers of course, but most people that have skill and speed have either made other artfriends or have joined a community.

The bad reputation I've built online, the bridges with private discord servers I've built, the few big artists I used to though of as mutuals that will most likely keep me blocked forever and never talk to me again made me open my eyes both about myself and how artists actually are beyond their art.

I decided those will be my last few days on the internet, I will not come back until everyone forgets about the bad reputation I've built on /ic/ and various places, my lolcow status gets entirely forgotten, my output and drawing skills alongside content put out get significantly better and respectable enough: 2+ years as an hermit, totally detoxing from social media if not for purely looking at art, using discord for occasional critique on a few servers 2 times per month at best, drawing drawing drawing while critiquing my own work and notice if it improves or not purely through my own skill and self-critique abilities, etc. basically, drastically changing my mindset, studying well without rushing and learn how to enjoy drawing enough to push this skill to an advanced level without the intention or the urge to show it to people until I deem myself worthy enough.

this seems unhealthy and you'll likely break within a month or two. What is your ACTUAL goal through all of this? Grow an audience? Get better? You can do this without completely going cold-turkey (if possible you should, but since you've posted this multiple times for months now on multiple different threads/boards.) So it's best to take things slow.
>>
>>84103773
>>84104019
Honestly dude, I think you're work is fine. The reason people keep making fun of you is because of how insecure you are and that you keep asking the same questions over and over expecting different answers. Just keep drawing and working on what you want to improve on.
As for your style, the retro anime aesthetic is coming back and, in some cases, has been back. I don't think you're going down the wrong path by emulating the Slayers artstyle. Maybe look into copying some other media you like to add some variety if you think it's not enough.
Anyway, I don't think it's a bad idea to unplug from the internet for a while and focus on improving. I've been considering doing the same thing. At 25, you're still young and could benefit from a bit of meditation.

>my lolcow status gets entirely forgotten
Let me just point out that's not very likely to happen. People have long memories, especially in places like this, and if you've fucked up bad enough to become a recognizable entity in a place with enforced anonymity, it's something that's gonna stick in the minds of your peers for a decade, if not more. Trying to hide away from your cringy past just gives it (and the people who will hold it over your head) undue power over you. I'll echo the sentiments of the other anons and say you need to do some serious soul-searching on your sabbatical and sort out your major malfunctions, otherwise chances are that little will change when you come back. And don't try to sort yourself out by your lonesome, you're probably not mentally stable enough to come to the right conclusions without a helping hand or two. Talk to shrinks and/or priests to see if they've got any valuable insights that'll set you on the right path, but don't trust their word implicitly either; you'll have to gather data from as many sources as you can get and draw your own conclusions from the available evidence, taking into account your own biases (and there's going to be a lot of those when it comes to examining your own psyche) all the while.

>People have long memories, especially in places like this
Good thing I only have this lolcow status on /ic/ and a few discord servers.

The problem though: those few discord servers were also places were currently big social media artists with online presence and a shitload of followers hanged out though, making my opportunities to get equally popular or even just a few thousands followers audience through the internet that isn't autists in this decade kind of impossible in my mind. My reputation is at rock bottom and I accept I'll suck and stay in obscurity for a lot of time alongside accepting that I will make it way way later than some art mutuals as well
