And investors didn't have complete control like they do now. Slave labor is one thing, but if you're paid enough for doing it you're more willing to cope with it. It's literally what my boomer parents did to justify their clearly self damage to their bodies in their old age yet don't wanna call it out for what it is and act like it was for the greater good of progress.

It's sad passion gets abused and instead of respecting it and paying for it proper they rather hoard the funds for themselves and demand even more hard work for nothing.
