At this point I come to this thread, scroll through a bit, all the cyoas look like shit, I leave. Sometimes entirely, sometimes I go to reddit. Have you guys and gals tried posting the shit you used to post 8 years ago or so? Like seriously these nucyoas are awful, I don't think I remember the last time someone other than me posted a cyoa with drawbacks, the shit you post doesn't adhere to any formula at all.

As far getting to pick what changes and powers, it strikes me as forcing that stuff on people might incur enough stress in someone to make them nonfunctional. There is also something of a selection bias, that being people who are interested in the cyoa are less likely to be people who would try to avoid the premise. You could apply that selection bias to the in setting selection that they were picking people based off of their perception of who would be a good fit.
