This is the sister story to "Mint in Box" (the OP caption) I mentioned last thread.
I had a lot of fun imagining what TV shows and video games a living vintage doll would be interested in. I chose Hornblower as it's timeless and I thought it might remind her of stories from her own era, and Paper Mario because I thought it would be appealing to a first-time girl gamer who needed something very, very easy but still wanted to move and jump a character around. I actually experimented with my own controller to make sure she'd be able to reach both the stick and the face buttons with her cute little arms.

Fun fact: The name "Evangeline" was invented by Longfellow for a character in one of his poems, "Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie." So it is a rare example of a name that was given to a fictional character before a real person.
Other examples of this include Vanessa (Cadenus and Vanessa), Jessica (The Merchant of Venice), Miranda (The Tempest), Pamela (The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia), and Lorna (Lorna Doone).

Of all those names, for some reason "Lorna" is the one I have the hardest time believing started in fiction. It's not that it's too mundane or not fantastical enough, but it just doesn't hit like "Evangeline" does.

A new battle school had gotten attention recently, and with the Champion Cynthia unquestioningly supporting it after getting a 'private lesson', Hilda and Rosa had to find out for themselves just what the regimen was like. As Cynthia welcomes them and sizes them up for service- I mean battle gear, they start to have doubts and some questions. But Cynthia reassures them Master- I mean Sensei, will make everything clear once they step into the "Training room".

I'm quite touched that you both like the story so much.

I've grown to like Mint a lot myself and would love to make a sequel story starring her. However, Nocrown, the artist who drew the image of Mint used in the caption, never drew another picture of her, and stopped uploading to their Pixiv account seven years ago. So if I was to make a sequel, I would to create a new picture of her, or just write the story out in unillustrated text.
Of the two, I'd be more interested in doing the latter, but I am actually currently (shhh, don't tell anyone) already doing that for a different one of my captions! So I would want to finish that project first before thinking about doing a second one for Mint.

I figured that lack of art is the biggest stopper for a sequel, and it's a damned shame to hear the artist is effectively gone.
Could maybe find a similar-enough looking doll picture and edit the hair to be green? Possibly a catgirl with the sides of her head hidden by hair, so the double ear situation is not so apparent (or rather, lack thereof in a lot of art)?
But that's still effort, and requires a stroke of luck in finding suitable art to edit.

In the process of sourcing images for the story, I checked every tag I could think of. Minigirl, doll, doll_joints, in_container, in_box, girl_in_a_box, toy_packaging, I'm sure others too that I've since forgotten. I also checked every reasonable braided_bun image to see if I could find something that matched and came up dry there too.
Her hairstyle, ears, tail, and outfit are all very specific; it's hard to find anything that matches two at the same time, let alone three or four, even assuming I could recolor everything.

It's certainly possible that there's an image out there somewhere which could work, but at this point I'm satisfied that it would be more efficient to draw something myself than to keep on looking.

I'm not personally offended by AI usage in general, but in this particular case I feel like even a very crude drawing I made myself would be more in line with the themes of the story than any AI-generated image could be. I wouldn't want to outsource something this meaningful to me.

A few months ago I decided I wanted to try my hand at novel writing, both as a new challenge for myself as a writer and also with the hope that (and I understand that this is a very difficult thing to do) if successful, I could begin working as a writer full-time.
I've written about 200 captions at this point, but I have very little experience with writing longform fiction, so it's been a fun challenge for me.
The novel is something of a fix-up, which is a writing jargon term for when you take a series of unconnected short stories (in my case, my captions) and rewrite and expand them to be one connected novel. (Like Asimov's "Foundation", if you're familiar with it.) So I'm weaving together various stories from my captions and combining them into a larger plot.
When it's complete, I am planning on publishing it as a series of perhaps two to four fantasy novels on Amazon. I'm currently about 120,000 words into the first draft. (For reference, The Fellowship of the Ring is about 190,000 words.)

I completely understand if this is disappointing or disinteresting, given that this is a thread for fiction that is shortform and free of charge, and my current plan for this novel is that it will be neither, but regardless of whether it's a massive success or an utter failure or anything between, I still plan on publishing the same 1-new-caption-a-week-or-more-on-average I've been maintaining here these past couple years.

I'll be sure to let you all know when it's finished. (It's actually kinda important that I do this, as I've lifted whole paragraphs from my captions without changes and I'd like to avoid a misunderstanding where I'm accused of plagiarizing myself.)

I mean, the tip I heard was "just keep writing", which you sure have been doing... but having a narrative that makes sense front to back sounds like a separate challenge, a bit less so if you're taking different stories and connecting them. (I haven't read much Asimov or Tolkien yet...) Reminds me of A Confederacy of Dunces, with its fun cast of weirdos.

The number looks nice and impressive, and I'm quite proud of each and all of them (different reasons for each cap), but like... if you ask the chef who's good at cooking lobsters but isn't good at cooking anything else how many lobsters he's cooked this year, of course the amount's going to be incredible.
The fact that I cook more lobsters than other people doesn't mean I'm a better chef than them, or even that I'm better at cooking lobster.
The "just keep writing" thing you mention, I think it's excellent advice, it's over half the equation I'd say, but the other whatever percent is embracing criticism, and stepping outside of your comfort zone.
If I never cared about improving or trying new things and I still made my caps in MS Paint and still didn't bother spellchecking them and etc. etc. I could write two thousand caps and it would hardly matter because I'd have hardly anyone reading them.
So I don't judge my success by the number of captions I've made, but by the number of nice comments like yours :)

Long as people give your writing a chance, I'm certain it will land with audiences somewhere - the quality of your prose is not to be questioned, and I want to believe your long form storytelling shines well even if you mostly do short-to-very-short visually-aided story snips here.
